"Migrating" computer variables from 2007 to 2012

I'm in the process of migrating server clients from a 2007 to 2012 environment. The computer objects all have quite a few computer variables associated with the objects that are used during OSD task sequences.
When we do a "bare-metal" build, the computer objects are deleted and recreated, and the variables are re-populated from a reference source of truth on the new object. So no problem there.
For the migration though, I was going to install the CM2012 client (basically upgrade the client from 2007) on the servers which will then have them register with the CM2012 site. However when this happens the variables won't be applied to the 2012
computer object.
I have a few ideas to resolve this, but was wondering if anyone else had already dealt with this situation?
Some thoughts I was considering:
1: Orchestrator job that identifies "new" computer objects in 2012 and regenerates the variables from the source of truth
2. Powershell/WMI/VBScript that reads the variables from the 2007 computer object and "copies" them to the 2012 object
Any other thoughts or suggestions welcome
Scott.

Thanks Torsten, I do appreciate the replies, but I will have to respectfully disagree with the question being answered perfectly.
I had asked "...was wondering if anyone else had already dealt with this situation?". I don't actually see how an answer of "I've never done this, but use powershell" is the perfect answer. This would also not serve to help any other
people that might come across this post looking for a similar solution.  I had marked that post as "helpful", but did not "mark as answer" because it didn't actually offer anything beyond what my first post already stated.
However, I'm not looking to argue. I'll post any powershell scripts or other things I end up using to help anyone else who comes across this post. There are far too many posts in the TechNet forums that just seem to get automatically closed as answered
when there is no real answer provided.

    1) Copied all the driver source path from SCCM2007 to 2012 folders and shared the same.
    2) By using migration Utility , i have migrated all the drivers from 2007 to 2012 .
    3) After the migration i have changed the dirver source path at CM2012 side pointing to new CM12 driver source path.
    4) I have started the DriverPackage migration.
    5) After the DriverPackage migration , i have changed to DriverPackage Source path at CM12 side pointing to new CM12 dirverpackage source.
Please help me my steps and procedure and suggest if anything i need to do extra .....
    My question and observation :
    1) During the driver migration , i got a warning message like . Some drivers not able to migrate due to unsupported by CM2012 .
        a) Is there any way i can find unsupported model drivers before or after the migration
        b) Is there any other process to migrate Unsupported drivers from 2007 to 2012 other than manual import or script basis
    2) After the DriverPackage migration and after the change in the DriverPackage source path. I am not seeing any folder creating in DriverPackage new source path (I understood the reason).

    Hi All,
I am using the HSM in my PKI environment and i performing the migration of CA from 2008 PKI to 2012 PKI. What i noticed is if the private key of CA is protected by OCS card then i don't see the CA certificate while running the  Microsoft wizard at the
option of choose the existing certficate and private key but if i change the protection of private key to module or default protection then i am able to see the certificate and able to complete the migration.
So is there a way i can still do the migration of CA without changing the protection of private key from OCS to module or default protection ??

  • When migrating ssis packages from 2005 to 2012 Activex Script Task component doesn't exist in 2012 version

    Hello,
We are migrating the ssis packages from 2005 to 2012.
I'm unable to convert Activex Script Task from 2005 vesrsion to 2012 because in 2012 version Activex Script Task doesn't exist.
Can anyone please let me know what is the alternative way to convert Activex Script Task from 2005 vesrsion to 2012?

    Hi Vinay9738,
Have you tried to upgrade the SSIS 2005 packages to SSIS 2012 packages by using the SSIS Package Upgrade wizard? In certain cases, ActiveX script in SSIS won’t work and we need to either modify the script or replace the ActiveX Script with stock SSIS
tasks. You can find the mapping between some most common patterns used in DTS ActiveX Script and SSIS native tasks from the following link:
    http://help.pragmaticworks.com/dtsxchange/scr/ActiveX%20Script%20Task.htm
Here is also a useful link about how to convert ADODB object of ActiveX Script to SSIS tasks:

  • Migrating to 2013 from 2007 with Outlook Anywhere disabled

    Hello
I'm in the middle of a migration from 2007 With Outlook anywhere disabled.
After I installed 2013 I added the external url to both inside and outside url's on CliantAccess, o-anywhere url and Virtual catalogs.
When I configured the External Access domain on the 2013 it also added this on the external url's on the 2007 server. On the 2007 server i manuelly changed the external url's to the Legacy name which is mail.domain.com. The New server is webmail.domain.com
both internally and externally. The servers real name is xxmail.domain.internal
After this, when I configure an Outlook Client With a user on the old server With autodiscover it configures it With Outlook anywhere, not mapi, but With the external name of the New server, webmail.domain.com under http Proxy settings. When I then
moved this user to the New server it stopped working in Outlook.
Is the best approch to enable Outlook anywhere on the 2007 server before migrating the users or can I og from mapi/rpc to rpc over http in 2013 without Outlook problems?
    Regards

    Hi,
Firstly, I’d like to explain, all users in Exchange 2013 use Outlook Anywhere. The information of Exchange proxy settings tab is automatically updated by Autodiscover.
I recommend you the following troubleshooting:
    1. Check the Autodiscover configuration on both Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2013 servers:
    Get-clientaccessserver |fl autodiscoverserviceinternaluri
    2. Check if there is any DNS entry about the legacy name points to Exchange 2007 IP address.
    3. Check if you can logon OWA with both Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2013 server.

  • SCOM Side By Side Migration from 2007 to 2012

We current have SCOM 2007R2 (6.1.7221) installed and we plan to install SCOM 2012 R2 (latest release) in a side-by-side migration.  If we deploy the SCOM 2012R2 Client to existing systems being monitored, can we multi-home the clients to both SCOM 2007R2
and SCOM 2012R2? Are there any version requirements or issues that we could face during the migration since we on (6.1.7221)?
Again, this is a side by side migration path and not an upgrade to the SCOM 2007 servers. :) I see other forum topics almost just like this, but don't see any supporting documentation.

  • Migrating root CA from 2003 to 2012 R2

Hi all, I have a couple of questions about migrating a root certificate authority from Server 2003 to Server 2012 R2.  I've been reading the following link which is pretty comprehensive except for a couple of small things....
    technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee126140(v=ws.10).aspx
    1) I would like to use a different server name, which seems fairly straight forward with some changes to the registry on the destination server.  I understand though, and can see, that all certificates currently issued by the CA have a CRL Distribution
    Point of ldap:// CN=<<name of CA>>,CN=<<name-of-current-server>>,DN=CDP,CN=Public Key.
It's the CN=<<name of current server>> part that bothers me.  Will revocation checks still work if the name of the CA server changes - ie. will it still work on account of the <<name of CA>> part remaining the same?
    2) I read something about issues going from a 32bit platform to a 64bit platform - is that applicable for in place upgrades only, or something I should be considering during the migration process?
    Thanks

    Hi,
The computer name, (hostname or NetBIOS name), does not have to match that of the original CA. However, the destination CA name must match that of the source CA. Further, the destination CA name must not be identical to the destination computer name.
Please go through the below article to do CA migration:

  • Is it possible to Migrate Live VMs from a Windows 2012 Hyper-V Cluster to a different 2012 R2 Cluster?

At the moment I'm in a bit of dilemma because I know that Windows 2012 supports "Shared Nothing Live Migration" but recently I got to know that this feature is available for stand alone Hyper-V Servers. My Setup is that I have
3 Servers running Windows Server 2012 Hyper-v Failover Cluster and I need to migrate everything to a new cluster running on Windows Server 2012 R2 and offcourse some VMs can't be turned off during migration so I need to do this live during production hours.
Another note is that both clusters will be running on the different LUNs since each cluster has its own CSVs. I need to know if it is possible to migrate such VMs/Roles Live without have any downtime of the VMs/Roles?

Yes, but one exception - live migration works only on "compatible cpu's". There actually is a setting in CPU for forcing compatibility
mode. If that is not set, and you mvoe for example from AMD to Intel, then - this is not possible in live migration, cluster or not.

  • Upgrading from 2007 to 2012 - Restoration of 2007 Storage

We are in the process of revieiwing the upgrade process. Our main concern is the ability to use DPM 2012 to restore Backups that were created on DPM 2012.
Is the restoration process supported by DPM2012.
Thank you in advance for your answer.

    Hi,
As long as you are upgrading along the way, then recovery points made on DPM 2007 will be available for restore on DPM 2012.
The proper steps to upgrade from DPM 2007 to DPM 2012 are as follows:
    a) Patch SCDPM 2007 to newest patch level. (kb2250436)
    b) Save copy of DPM2007 SQL database (dpmbackup -db) - copy to network share.
    c) Un-install DPM 2007 - then Upgrade OS Windows 2003 to Windows 2008 - then to Windows 2008 R2.
Upgrading a DPM Server to Windows Server 2008
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd637098.aspx
    d) Install DPM2007 and install latest patch level. (kb2250436)
    e) Copy saved DPM 2007 DPMDB to local drive, then restore DPM 2007 DPMDB.
         (dpmsync -restoredb -dbloc c:\msdpm.bak)
         (dpmsync -sync)
    f) Upgrade SCDPM 2007 to DPM 2010 (Which automatcally included SQL upgrade)
    g) Patch SCDPM 2010 to newest update UR7 (kb2751231)
    h) Update the Agents to DPM 2010 agents
    I) Upgrade SCDPM 2010 to SCDPM 2012.
    j) Install latest DPM 2012 update UR3 (KB2756127)
    k) update the agents to DPM 2012 agents.
    L) Run CC on all data sources.

  • I cannot configure the clients with POP account after migrating the Exchange from 2007 to 2013

    Hi,
When i configure the POP account on Outlook 2010 is giving the error message
"Send test e-mail message: Cannot send the message. Verify the e-mail address in your account properties.  The server responded: 550 5.7.1 Client does not have permissions to submit to this server"
please help me out on this,
    Thanks in advance
    Regards,

The OP says users can't send mail.  POP is not used to send mail.
I strongly recommend you have users reconfigure their clients to send using port 587.  This has been the default configuration since the introduction of Exchange 2007.  You can modify the default receive connector, or add another receive connector
to allow clients to connect and authenticate if you want, but when you do so, you will risk causing message mail flow to fail.
I am not going to try to tell you how to do it precisely because I don't want to be a party to you messing up your mail flow.  Here's more documentation on receive connectors from TechNet.

We migrated our resource mailboxes thru the move mailboxes in 2013 EAC but now we're at the point of decommissioning our 2007 servers.  Before the actual decommission we stopped all 2007 services and dismounted all 2007 databases.  Once we did
this the resources would no longer work - errors pertaining to cannot directly book the resource.
I had to bring up the public folder database for the moved resources to work again.  We do not use public folders any longer so we did not do any type of public folder migration.  Do I need to do this for the resources to work?
