Modem hangup
I have seen that the PowerBook uses a modem Jump driver Motorola SM56K.
I have several time with my Internet connection "modem hangup" using simple telephone line after 15 min. On the web it is said that this driver induce several times hangup on PC and it exists update driver for PC but not for Mac.
Is there anybody who has the same problem and solve it?
Is this problem coming form the software (driver) or the hardware (modem) ?
Is there a known update ?
I had a similar issue. Fortunately, I had two different ways to connect, where one (network-manager) was working fine, and the other one (pon) showed this problem. So I could compare all relevant settings...
I discovered, the message '...buffering packet 1981 (expecting 1978, lost or reordered)' is no problem, and happens on stable connenctions as well.
The real problem started with this line in /var/log/daemon.log:
Mar 15 11:13:11 XXXX pptp[6438]: anon warn[decaps_gre:pptp_gre.c:331]: short read (-1): Message too long
I realized, the problem was due to a too large MTU size for ppp0 (was 1456). I changed it to 1400, and everything was fine.
# ifconfig ppp0 mtu 1400

My internet modem continually hangs up. After a year and 3 times in the shop, plus modem being replaced, as well as MLB and Ram, and software reinstalled, it is still doing this. A new phone line was put in. An Apple Consultant said it could be caused by a weird electrical problem in the area. I need help!
tiger Mac OS X (10.4.4)Any rhythm to it? How long does it usually go? Have
you tried the other Drivers like v34, or v92?
Are you aware of the settings to make the Modem hang
up after such & such time of non-use?
Yes, I know about the settings to make the modem hang up after a certain time of non use.
It just hangs up when it wants to; sometimes it will be over a minute when trying to open mail, sometimes less; even safari does not always open in a certain length of time, so I know what is going to happen - modem problems again. I'm not computer savy,so don't know anything about other drivers. I will, however, do some checking into that. My computer was bought at COMPUSA and they are the ones who have been trying to solve the problem. One thing that the Apple Consultant did was loan me a Belkin Battery backup/surge protector, which really helped. I just can't see that something like that should be used to solve a problem with a brand new computer. -
I set up a 600MHz G3 iMac (10.3.9) for a client; the modem worked fine when I tested it, but now she says it sometimes can't connect -- about "1 time out of 15". When it doesn't connect, it will fail repeatedly ("5 or 6 times in a row") but then work okay later in the day. The ISP says there's no problem; and once when the iMac wouldn't connect she tried right then with her PC and it worked.
I've looked at the Internet Connect utility's Connection Log; where a successful connection is logged thus:
(date & time) : Version 2.0
Dialing (number)
Modem Reliable Link Established.
Modem Compression Established.
Serial connection established.
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cu.modem
... and IP & DNS numbers are listed
An unnsuccessful connection is logged thus:
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cu.modem
LCP terminated by peer.
Hangup (SIGHUP).
Modem hangup.
Connection terminated.
Does anyone have any idea what this means? Is the modem going bad (I thought modems either worked or didn't work, not intermittent)? "LCP terminated by peer" sounds like something happening on the other end. Anyone know what SIGHUP means? I can replace the modem if necessary, but it's a pain so I'd like to learn what I can first.Thanks for your response. As it turned out, I discovered I was able to duplicate the problem on my iBook at my house, which pretty well ruled out a cause in either the iMac or the phone line at the client's house. Consultation with the ISP determined that it was probably due to how I had the connection configured, i.e. using "[email protected]" rather than simply "username". For some reason, 90% of the time that would work, but 10% of the time it wouldn't. So I've corrected that, and we're hoping the problem won't recur. (The tech also suggested entering the DNS numbers, rather than allowing them to be retrieved automatically; he said "Macs require that," though I doubt this is true -- certainly not for EarthLink, which I use.)

[SOLVED] netctl profile auto-start/stop on Huawei modem plug-in/out
Hello!
I have Huawei 3G USB modem.
$ lsusb | grep -i huawei
Bus 004 Device 007: ID 12d1:1436 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E173 3G Modem (modem-mode)
I am trying to make netctl to auto-switch to internet connection via this modem as soon as I plug it in.
Following Arch Wiki, I made internet via wvdial working fine:
$ sudo wvdial kymp
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.61
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Sending: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet.kymp.net"
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet.kymp.net"
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT*99***1#
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT*99***1#
CONNECT
--> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
--> Starting pppd at Tue Aug 6 22:52:11 2013
--> Pid of pppd: 2087
--> Using interface ppp0
--> local IP address <...>
--> remote IP address <...>
--> primary DNS address <...>
--> secondary DNS address <...>
Next, I tried to setup netctl profile for this modem, but my netctl mobile_ppp profile is NOT working:
$ cat /etc/netctl/ttyUSB0-kymp | nocomment
Description='Kymp internet connection'
Interface=ttyUSB0
Connection=mobile_ppp
PPPDebug=true
AccessPointName=internet.kymp.net
Mode=3Gpref
...with following log info:
$ sudo journalctl -b | grep pppd | grep 2387
pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0
Script /usr/sbin/chat -v -t15 -f /run/network/mobile_ppp.ttyUSB0.ttyUSB0-kymp/modem.chat finished (pid 2389), status = 0x0
Serial connection established.

Hangup (SIGHUP)

Seems like something is wrong in netctl profile and I need to teach netctl to use wvdial instead of whatever-it-uses-now for mobile_ppp connection.
So the question is: "Is this possible to make netctl profile based on wvdial connection? Or is this possible to fix abovr netctl mobile_ppp profile?"
Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

Thanks for sharing this bit of information. This solved the issue for me. But before fixing this, I also had to change the file at another position: I had to escape the quotes around the IP in the connect string setting the APN, so that it now looks like this:
${AccessPointName:+'OK-AT-OK' 'AT+CGDCONT=1,\"IP\",$(quote_word "$AccessPointName")'}
Without this change, I was getting errors like this:

Bluetooth modem with Mac OSX 10.5.x
I have been using bluetooth modem of E51 and N70 with Mac OSX 10.4.x, it has been working really fine.
Last week I updated Mac OSX to 10.5.2. iSync works well with Nokia_E51_1v1.dmg. But, bluetooth modem doesn't work well...
Actually I can connect internet with the modem script that is distributed at http://www.taniwha.org.uk/. But, after connecting, OSX said sooner that "The connection was terminated by the remote site. Please try again."
According to ppp.log, before connection terminated ppp.log records "Modem hangup"...
I am puzzled the problem. Please let me know how to do configuration to connect the internet with bluetooth modem on OSX 10.5.xI compared the ppp.log in Tiger and in Leopard and I figured out that Leopard sent IPv6 packet after connecting the internet.
When such situation, we can apply "networksetup -setv6off Bluetooth" in console to solve the suddenly disconnection problem.
Now the bluetooth modem of E51 works really fine!
Sincerely,

Hi,
Hope you can help me with this, Im stuck.
I have a 2500 router with several external modems (US Robotics 56k) connected over asynch cables. the line config is setup to autocommand telnet to a backend server.
When I attempt to dial in, whichever modem answers, it seems to pick up the call, but then it drops almost immediately. The router log shows the same debug message each time:

endHi,
On a similar occassion wherein I was trying to get Aux Port configured for Remote Dialin (for exec access and not for data) I tried almost 4 USR modems and everytime all the modems would get stuck at the handshake and never be able to complete the process.
However when I changed the modem to a simple make and model, it did work!
I guess its a problem with USR, have you ever tried with some other brand?
Kind Regards,

Problems with Huawei E169 3G modem
Does anyone have any lead how to get this thing working.
I followed the wikis E220 page, and i can connect with wvdial but can't access internet after it.
I've bee trying to get this thing working with Arch almost a day and have tried pretty much everything but still it won't let me surf / ping anything when i connect with wvdial.I have no luck unfortunately..
I didn't get any ip from the log and the /etc/ppp/resolv.conf didn't exist. I tried with gnome-ppp and it gave me an ip for 2 seconds then it died. But I copied it to /etc/resolv.conf but it doesn't help. Perhaps there's something I don't understand..

3640 RAS: modems take 60seconds to accept another call
I have a 3640 running 12.2(29) acting as a back-up RAS box, with an 8-port internal modem card. When a user disconnects from a modem, it takes exactly 60 seconds before that modem will accept another incoming call. I believe my modemcap is wrong. Can someone please advise what I need to change?

[Solved] NetworkManager-pptp VPN not working after update to 0.9.10
Hello,
I have a PPTP VPN set up and it's been working for a long time. However, after I updated last night to networkmanager-0.9.10, it is no longer able to connect to the remote network. I can activate the VPN connection, enter my password, but after a short period of time, the connection reports: "Error: Connection activation failed: the VPN service returned invalid configuration." As I mentioned before, this VPN was working right before the update and I didn't change the configuration on either my computer or the destination network so I'm pretty sure that this is something to do with the update. I'm wondering if anybody else has run into this problem and if they've been able to find a solution. I've been searching all over these forums and the internet for some hours now and I haven't found anything yet. I'm hoping that somebody might be able to point me in the right direction or maybe know of something that might have changed with the new update.
Here is my VPN configuration (using NetworkManager-PPTP. I've also obscured the public IP address):
[connection]
id=MyVPN
uuid=fe6e6265-1a79-4a69-b6d1-8b47e9d4c948

If you've gotten this far, thank you for taking the time to read through all this! Any help that you can give would be much appreciated.
Last edited by greyseal96 (2014-08-27 15:20:02)Hmm, not sure about the 3.16 series kernel, but I found that when I upgraded to kernel 3.18 the PPTP VPN also stopped working. This time, though, it was because, for some reason, there was a change in kernel 3.18 where the firewall kernel modules necessary for the VPN don't get loaded so the firewall won't allow some of the PPTP traffic from the remote side back in. Since the firewall is stateful, these modules need to be loaded so that the firewall can know that the incoming PPTP traffic from the remote side is part of an existing connection. Here's what my network manager logs looked like:

To fix this, I had to add a file to the /etc/modules-load.d directory to have the modules loaded into the kernel at boot. I just created a file called netfilter.conf and put the following in it:
nf_nat_pptp
nf_conntrack_pptp
nf_conntrack_proto_gre
Not sure if this addresses your problem or not, but maybe it's worth a look. -
VPN. What's this and how to use it?
Hello,
Recently I started to work from home and not the office. To connect to my work server my company's sysadmin sent me the requisites to connect to VPN (I need to ssh to my work server but it's allowed to the limited set of IPs). But I have no idea what to do next. How to set up the connection and how to use it?
ThanksThanks! I've tried to follow the steps described in the wiki article but unfortunately stucked on 'Making Your Connection' section:

G3 iBook having dial-up connection issues
iBook 500MHz G3 running 10.3.9
My Dad's computer is acting very, very strange. He's got a dial-up with connection, which is admittedly slow. This affects both Safari & Firefox when he's browsing the 'net. Lately (past few months, off and on) it's been SLOW AS DRUGGED SNAILS. It will sometimes take 5 or 10 minutes to load a page, sometimes resulting in a "loaded x of y items, z errors" kind of thing in both Safari & Firefox. The computer is otherwise normal for other computing tasks. I have tried connecting from my house and also, it appeared normal (that day).
Maybe a month ago I ran disk repair/permissions and a once around on the extended hardware test and came up with nothing obvious. I'm running a loop hardware test right now and will let it loop for a good long while, maybe 5 or 6 hours. So far, no errors after nearly 15 loops.
In the meantime, I've been poking in the logs. I did some Googling, but it was mostly unhelpful (whether or not it was my query set, I don't know). But, does anyone have any idea what this is: "May 29 19:23:44 localhost kernel: 0 0 AppleUSBCDCECMData: probe - provider doesn't want us to match"? Would that be an error in the iBook's OS X software or his dial-up provider refusing to connect (as usual they are clueless on the Mac front and blame any and all problems on the Mac)?
As a last resort, and I do mean last resort, I could zero out the drive and reinstall Panther. I'd rather figure out what is wrong so if it a) pops up again I know what it is and can address it and b) don't want to do the reinstall dance if I don't have to.
Log from the other day. Similar as yesterday and others.
Any insight is appreciated.

As it turned out, I did format and reinstall Panther for him. We tested it here and it behaved as expected (for dial-up). All was right with the world until he got back to his house.
Same as before. I told him to call the provider and tell them that a) the iBook has a fresh install and was updated to include all current software for Panther and b) he had none of this at my house. That, in fact, I surfed on it for a whole morning and didn't experience any of the issues he did.
The situation stands like this:
provider is having one of their engineers look at the issue (slow w/disconnects)
he is to call his local telephone company and ask them to conduct a line test for noise.
In the meantime, I'm scouting around for a compatible wireless card that won't cost us an arm and a leg and pushing for him to go to the cable company for access. -
Bluetooth device browsing with a Cingular 8125 PDA phone
Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me with this, as it's the first time I've tried to Bluetooth a PDA phone with my iMac. All I want to do is use the Bluetooth File Exchange to get some pictures off the phone and onto my computer. I've never had problems with this with my old SLVR, but now the computer does not seem to want to get the files from the new phone. Is it because the PDA is running Windows Mobile or something? Does anyone have any other recommendations?
Thanks!Hi all, same problem here.
As Talez describes in this post:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5723469
I have the same problem.
Mar 2 14:22:06 macbook-di-shaice kernel[0]: IOBluetoothDevice::moreIncomingData non CONTINUATION ACL packet received when expecting one 202e -> flags 02
Mar 2 14:22:06 macbook-di-shaice kernel[0]: IOBluetoothDevice::moreIncomingData non FIRST ACL packet received when expecting one 102e -> flags 01
Mar 2 14:22:06 macbook-di-shaice pppd[427]: Modem hangup
But this happens (as you can read above) ALSO when I use my WM6.0 phone as bluetooth modem (an HTC P3600 with Windows Mobile DUN enabled).
At the moment I am not at home, but I think that the only solution is to retrieve Bluetooth Kext from Tiger and put them in Leopard and hope that all goes smoothly as before.
I'm totally disappointed because this is a BIG problem for every one out there that needs to work on the road.
I hope that this post will be effectly posted (I'm writing from my macbook using this crappy PAN Bluetooth connection)
Best regards,

Net usage causes arch based router soft freeze/hang (kind of)
My headless router hangs at some random intervals, mostly (as I've noticed) when I'm trying to upload larger files.
After some (random amount of) time the router becomes irresponsive, none of my LAN machines can reach the internet, not even ping the router.
The only thing that helps is to make any kind of physical access to the router, such as plugging in a keyboard, a USB device, or anything like that. After this action the machine is like "waking up", and continues to route the traffic as expected.
The sad thing is, I don't see anyithing in the journal. I'm not kidding, according to the journal nothing happened, a few times it just says "modem hangup" (I'm on adsl with rp-pppoe) , but the timestamp corresponds to the moment when I've plugged in a pendrive, for example (that means the moment of the wake-up).
Do you have any ideas what can cause such kind of behaviour? I've never seen something like this before.
the box has the following hardware:
VIA esther 800mhz Processor
512 MB of RAM (memtest shows no errors)
8GB CF Card
3 Realtek 8139 10/100 Mbps NICs
Last edited by scar (2015-02-23 12:56:52)My i7 rig is with a socket 1156 board, an Asus P7P55D mobo, and an 860 CPU. I know the Corsair DDR3 memory @ its stock 1.65v simply doesn't run at 1600mhz like it says on its box - 1333mhz seems to be its stability wall.
I upgraded my Q6600 and Asus P5B deluxe rig because so many people said to never consider overclocking on an editing rig. Was that over-cautious advice?

How long editing a Pages file?
Hi. I'm wondering if there is a way to see how long you've spent working on a document in Pages. I know with Word you can see how long you spent editing a document. Is there anything similar in Pages? Thanks.
