Monitor IP address 255.255.255.255

Hi,
I am trying to monitor the DHCP discovery port using the CVI UDP tools. The port is on multicast address 0.0.0.0 (aka 255.255.255.255).
When I try the following;
status = UDPMulticastSubscribe (MDchanHandle, "0.0.0.0", NULL);
It gives me a runtime error telling me that this is not a valid multicast address.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks
Andy

According to the CVI help valid multicast addresses (Class D) range from 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255.

  • Monitor IP addresses for Airport

Hi all, this is probably a silly question but I'll ask anyway:
If you have your AEBS set to distribute IP addresses via DHCP, is there a way to monitor which addresses have been issued and to what MAC address? I've looked all over the Management utility but have had no luck.
    Thanks in advance.

  • IP Address 255.255.255.255

We are having IP problems with a number of production servers running
Netware 6.5 sp3 (very slow responses and dropped packets with a couple of
hundred pings) and wonder whether it is related to a strange line on the
console screen during bootup, reporting unable to resolve 255.255.255.255
    to a host name.
I have checked Inetcfg and the broadcast address isn't configured to any
card. Where else should I look to find the spurious record and change it to
    the correct value?

    Andrew,
I'm having the exact same problem (now) and was sorry to find that none of the proposed solutions worked in my case.
I think it's a problem in SLP. My server has two NIC's, one on 10.0.0.250 , my internal network and one on 192.168.0.1 for outgoing internet traffic.
I want SLP to bind to 10.0.0.250, but it always binds to 192.168.0.1
    display slp da gives:

Now after installing the latest firmware SonicOS Enhanced 5.9.1.1-39o, the log does not show the ip address in a user friendly format. I have played around with all the new settings options but no matter what I choose the ip address looks like gibirish. Please check out the screen shot to see what I am referring to. Let me know if you have a quick work around or if there is some sort of logging setting in one of my rules that may cause this?

  • ASA 5505 - L2TP over IPsec - Remote Address shows outside interface address

Using an ASA 5505 for firewall and VPN.  We've enabled L2TP over IPsec to allow Windows clients to connect without third party software.
The devices complete the connection and authenticate fine, but then are unable to hit any internal resources.  Split tunneling seems to be working, as they can still hit outside resources.  Packet tracer shows tcp flowing freely between VPN clients (192.168.102.0/24) and internal resources (192.168.100.0/24).  Even the NAT translation looks good in packet tracer.
I pulled up the session details for one of the VPN clients in the ASDM and under the IPsecOverNatT details, it is showing the VPN client's remote address correctly, but displays the local address as the address assigned to the outside interface (which the client is using to connect.)  This seems to be the problem, as viewing detailed connection logs shows the internal resources trying to send packets back to the outside interface rather than the VPN client's assigned internal addresses.  Details:

Any ideas?  The remote clients connect but when internal resources try to send traffic to the VPN clients, the packets are directed to the outside interface address instead of the local address assigned to the VPN client.

I have what I believe to be a similar issue. Site to site vpn is working well. That is site b can ping and send traffic to site A but Site A can not. Site B is a 3rd party vpn router. Site A is a Cisco 5505.
It appears that when the crypto map inserts the route into the routing table it shows the route via the outside IP of the outside interface and not the IP of Site B. in the crypto map I can see the proper ip address for the peer. I can't figure out why when it inserts the route that it uses the wrong ip address

  • DHCP Server not giving out IP Address to APPLE iPhone

A little background, I have a very nice 16GB 3G iPhone (from Apple of course). It has no problem connecting to my wireless access point (cisco 1240). • Terminal prompt starts with client IP Address

I named my macbook pro as "pine" and add the following line to the .bash_profile file
    export PS1='\h:\w> '
Normally, it displays "pine:~>", but after I connect my laptop to the wireless network via a VPN, the prompt becomes
    client-77-104-71-149:~>
Why does the terminal prompt look so weird? How to change it back to normal?

The issue occurs on a daily basis for about 100 laptops that are normally docked to a wired connection (subnet 10.2.3.x), but when undocked the laptop transitions to a wireless connection (10.2.5.x).  When initially docked, a laptop connected to
a wired connection will properly negotiate with DHCP all four parts of the handshake in the classic way and get an IP address (10.2.3.101 for example).
The problem begins about 5 - 10 minutes later when the same laptop makes a DHCPDiscover with a source address of 10.2.3.101 and destination address of 255.255.255.255.  This continues every 10 minutes or so until the laptop is undocked or taken off
the wire.  It only acquires on additional address once, but if we delete it off the DHCP server, then it reacquires the bad, additional lease.
When the laptop reach 50% of its lease life or later (undocked and returned the next day), it make a DHCPRequest for 10.2.3.101 from source address 0.0.0.0 to destination address 255.255.255.255.  It then reacquires the lease like normal.
Yes, the docking and undocking will move them between subnets by changing the interface.  If we disable the wireless adapters while the laptop is docked, it stops sending DHCPDiscover packets from source address 10.2.3.101 to destination address 255.255.255.255.
When we reenable the wireless adapters, then the bad behavior starts up again.  We see this in Wireshark packet captures and the DHCP client logging.  None of the events or strings have from the logs have either given us an explantion or solution.
    Thanks again,
    Mark

  • Why won't my atv2 connect with a static address

    Hello,
Suddenly, my ATV2 will not connect to the net with a static address.  I even did a restore hoping it would help.  When I log into the router,  i cannot see the atv2 unless I allow a dhcp address.  We're not talking rocket science:
I have an airport extreme with the mac address entered on the allow list (which isnt relavent if the router can only see it through dhcp)
    192.169.0.25  preferred static address
    255.255.255.0 subnet
    192.168.0.1 dns
    192.168.0.1 router address
i get the same results wired or wifi.
Nothing has changed in my configurations but alas I turned on my ATV2 to discover it was not connecting to my network as before.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

    192.169.0.25  preferred static address
    255.255.255.0 subnet
    192.168.0.1 dns
    192.168.0.1 router address
i get the same results wired or wifi.
Did you mean to write 192.169.0.25??
The router is on 192.168.0.1, that would mean your ATV is on a different subnet to your router.
ATV's IP address should be 192.168.0.25 instead, so they are on the same subnet.

  • ICloud won't sync Address Book

I'm running iCloud on a MBP, iPhone and iPad, all using the last OS.
If I create a new event in iCal on my MBP, it quickly shows up on the iPhone and iPad.  But if I create a new Contact (or change an existing one) in Address Book on my MBP, it does not show up on either iOS device or on iCloud.com.
If I change a Contact in my Address Book on iCloud.com, it shows up on the iPhone and iPad, but not on my MBP.
So iCloud is not communicating Contacts between my MBP and iCloud.  It is communicating Contacts between iCloud and iOS devices, and it is communicating iCal events over all of them.
I've gone into System Prefs:iCloud and tried to uncheck Contacts.  The System Prefs pane freezes.  I can't click my way out of it, I have to Force Quit it.  When I re-open it, Contatcs is checked.  Un-checking it didn't "stick".
I've gone into System Prefs:iCloud and tried to sign out of iCloud.  I get the same freezing problem.  Only a Force Quit gets me out.
If I uncheck other things like Calendar, that works just fine.  Again, the only problem is wiuth Contacts.
When I open Address Book, and see individual Contacts on the right-hand page, and Groups on the left, all the Groups are listed under "iCloud", and there is a spinning gear to the right of "iCloud".
While Address Book is open, and the gear is spinning opposite "iCloud", the Activity Monitor shows Address Book as eating up 100% of CPU, and several GBs of Real Mem.  So it seems that Address Book is trying to do something - the spinning gear opposite "iCloud" never stops - but it's just not communicating with iCloud.
Any idea what's going on and what I can do about it?
    Thanks in advance ...

Thanks Jeffchoa - I was so hopeful this would solve it for me because I have the EXACT same situation that Roger Barre so meticulously described above.  My MBP, iPhone and iPad are not communicating in iCloud but only for address book - calendar and notes are fine.  My gear wheel also turns all the time next to the iCloud category and I checked the activity monitor and the same thing - 104% of CPU used up and 4.5 GB of real memory - crazy high numbers.  I however was able to turn off contacts and back on again - it just took 10 minutes the first time.  I did this on all 3 devices and deleted my accounts and everything.  Was on the phone w/a genius for over an hour and he couldn't figure it out.
BUT we never disabled through address book preferences.  We only disabled through macbook system preferences.  When I tried jeffchoa's suggestion, I thought it worked b/c one of the missing test contacts appeared.  But others didn't and then the gear wheel started it's thing again.  So I tried it again and then this time it froze on me and I finally had to force quit.  Now I have contacts in two groups - duplicates and the annoying gear is still spinning and some of the test contacts that were only on my devices showed up in All on My Mac?!
I also have another problem which is what I noticed first.  Addresses on my MBP are not showing up on my iPhone or iPad.  They are old addresses that were imported when I switched to iCloud 2 months ago so they were never touched.  The other contact details are showing but the home addresses are just MIA.  It's happening in 1 out of 5 of my contacts I think (I have 2000 so not sure how bad it really is).  I am running iOS7 on both devices and OS X 10.8.5
Anyone else out there with some ideas?  I so hoped this was my ticket!
    Thanks!

  • Network and Bandwidth Monitor Suggestion?

I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a network monitor application that runs well on Leopard Server. I would hope it could provide statistics on different ethernet interfaces as well as filter down to ip addresses. I've used Network Monitor (but it doesn't seem to filter down to monitoring ip addresses) and ntop but I don't know if runs on Leopard. It would be used to check for bottlenecks as well as monitor bandwidth usage for individual ip's. Thanks for any suggestions.

Solarwinds is one of the best tools our clients purchased for pinpointing issues on their LAN. All too often a tech points to the network as a problem, only to find through Solarwinds that the problem is related to CPU or memory or disk space, etc. Solarwinds is easy to use and the amount of time and trouble it saved payed for itself many times over in a very short amount of time.

  • IP address 192.168.1.255 active every 30 seconds - why?

The IP address 192.168.1.255 is active every 30 seconds - why? I use Virus Barrier and also Little Snitch to monitor network receiving and sending activity... Since I began this process I've been baffled by the fact that this particular IP address, 192.168.1.255, is so active - about every 30 seconds the Little Snitch window shows sending and receiving activity after the the line "cupsd." I assume it's harmless - but since I can't seem to determine why this is happening, I can't be 100% sure... I hoping someone familiar with this network issue can explain why this is happening. Thanks very much.

    Hi there,
An IP address starting with 192.168 always is associated with a router. To have items being sent to and from it is therefore normal.
    Nothing to worry about.

    3/28/12 11:52:30.034 AM Address Book: [CardDAVPlugin-ERROR] -_saveChanges: [syncAddressBook(<ABAddressBook: 0x7fcfb4128680>)saveAndTriggerSync:NO updateModificationDate:nil] FAILED
3/28/12 11:52:39.156 AM Address Book: -[ABAddressBook save] failed. (<ABAddressBook: 0x7fcfb4128680>)
    3/28/12 11:52:39.157 AM Address Book: [CardDAVPlugin-ERROR] -_saveChanges: [syncAddressBook(<ABAddressBook: 0x7fcfb4128680>)saveAndTriggerSync:NO updateModificationDate:nil] FAILED
3/28/12 11:52:46.000 AM kernel: IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero
This is repeated in an endless loop as the console window fills to capacity and overflows..
Also, in the Activity Monitor, the address book is continually using 97% to 99% of the processor.
I made a new entry in the contact book named "TEST".  After a few minutes, TEST appeared twice in my local computer, and is now filling up my iPad with new TEST contacts.  36 times so far, but continuing to add as I write this.
Anyway, Any thoughts as to how I can fix this?
    Thanks,
    Matt

    ADDENDUM...
I just realized that the local address book no longer allows me to edit or delete any of the cards. This is probably because Address book is so busy doing its background tasks.  But I thought it was interesting.
Oh, and now my iPad has 50 occurances of the test contact.

  • Dialog boxes pop up on wrong monitor

I have my workspace spread out over two monitors, with a third preview screen on a TV. My timeline and preview monitors are on my center screen with the main title bar, considered the "main" screen by OSX. However, any time a dialog box pops up, it appears on my leftmost monitor. It's a pain, since the majority of my work takes place on the center screen, to constantly have to move back and forth between monitors to address any dialog boxes that pop up to adjust clip speed, export settings, watch preview render progress, cancel auto-saves, etc. Is there any way to change the default position of these dialog boxes? Moving them over when they appear doesn't seem to change anything.

Thanks for the suggestion—it led me to the solution. It turns out the dialog boxes appear on whichever screen contains the "main" window box—that is, the window with the bar at the top that shows the directory path of the project you're working on. Rearranging my workspace so the window was on the main screen fixed the problem.
