More Never ending custom build problems

One more time / have never seen so many problems with just buying a new computer:
Are you our there Harm or others..
Never seen anything like this..
Gigabyte X58-UD5 Motherboard / USB-3 and ESata-3 600
Win-7 Pro 64 bit..
WD eSataV-Raptor 600gb system drive /eSata 3 I believe, at least this is what I ordered.
Other drives are WD-Black 7200 eStata-3
Now the second rebuild of this new system shows up with more issues:
on the green icon for external device removal, My C Drive & one of my 4 other hard drives are showing as dismountable.. What’s up with that scary stuff?
In the bios my eSata drives are showing as IDE. don’t see any option to change this..
The Win-7 speed test gives me readings of 7.7 across all items except my C Drive which is the 10,000rpm WD, this gives me a score of 5.9 >100mbs.???
>>>Then when I go to access the onboard raid controller it reports it can not be found, but I did install this from the Gigabyte DVD..
I have read all kinds of topics about this, including not having the C Drive on the same power cable as the other Hard Drives…
The more I read on the net about this the more confused I get..
The builder does not seem to have a clue about any of these issues..
Can anyone turn the light on here..
Thanks again for about the fourth time and counting:
>>>Any recommendations on a utility to just do Hard Drive speed testing / not a full benchmark program..
Thanks again folks / I’m about to give up the ghost on buying new computers..

I have an ASUS motherboard with 3 hard drives... each one connected directly to the motherboard
I don't know how many sata connections your motherboard has... but I would **think** that as long as you don't have more drives than connections, it would be better to have each drive directly connected to the motherboard
Say JT..
I think you did not understand or I did not explain properly, all my drives are Sata drives are connected directly to the motherboard, they just show up in the bios as master and slave..  The board supports 10 hard drives / 5 banks of two slots each / controller numbers 0 to 9.
If  drives are connected to controller 0 & 1  they show up as master and slave in bios
If the same drives are connected to controller 0 & 3 they show up as both masters..
I was just trying to find out if there was any actual performance difference between the two options above, especially if the master HD is 10,000 rpm and the slave is 7200rpm...
Also:
Controllers 0 through 5 are listed as Sata-2
Controllers 6 & 7 are listed as GSata-3
Controllers 8 & 9 are listed as GSata-2 whatever that is ??
It notes that two of these share the same ports with eStat but does not say which ones.
I assume there is no actual diference speed wise between the hard drive performance on Sata 2 or GSata-3 because of other bottlenecks ?
All my drives are Sata-3
Two of my drives are showing up on the task bar as removable drives ( one of these are my C: Drive)..
I tried to unmount these just to see what would happen and it will not actually disconnect / thank god.  :-
Can anyone out there with Win-7 tell me what the Win-7 performance test gives you for a rating number for your C: Drive ??
All my scores are 7.7 except the Hard drive (C; drive) which is rated as 5.9  ??
>>>Would that be a normal rating for a WD Raptor 10,000 rpm or is there some issues going on here ?
I did not doo much today with this system / kind of burnt out for now.
Thanks for the comeback.

  • A never ending series of problems

I've had my Lenovo 3000 V200 for about a year and a half now.  I have the 3 year on-site warranty so I've got that going for me.
Everything was great with the computer for the first 1+ year.  Then, a few months ago the hard drive failed.  I've always been extremely careful when moving the computer around, never drop it onto the desk or anything like that, so I figured it was just bad luck.  Lenovo sent me a replacement hard drive, I replaced it, lost my emails (everything else was backup up regularly) and thought that was that.
Then my computer started overheating - I think it probably started about month ago, but honestly I probably didn't recognize a problem right away.  The computer would shut itself off, and I didn't know at first if it was the operating system, or other software, or the computer.  Then, I tried backing up the computer to DVD (about 30GB worth of data) and it shut itself off after 10 minutes or so.  After multiple attempts, it was clear the computer was overheating.  I posted a question relating to this on this forum a few weeks ago.  The suggestion I got was to call for service.
I did just that.  Lenovo care originally suggested that we replace the fan.  I knew that wasn't the problem because the fan was actually blowing strongly at high speed constantly.  I suggested it might be something with the system board, but they were reluctant.  Finally they agreed to replace the fan and CPU.  I cancelled my schedule for the next day, waited for the tech, who came and replaced the fan and CPU.  This actually seemed to solve the problem.  The computer would no longer shut down after 5-10 minutes.  When I asked the tech if we should test out the system, he declined, but things seemed to work fine.  Unfortunately, that wasn't the end of it.
A few days later, I noticed that the built-in Bluetooth was no longer functional.  I don't use bluetooth every day, so I didn't notice until a few days later.  I went through and checked the software, the drivers, the access connections, everything.  Basically, the computer showed that the hardware was not present.  Again, I called Lenovo Care.  They suggested all manner of things, wasting 2+ hours of my time trying things that were just asinine.  Finally, they agree that there was a problem and agreed to send someone out to replace the bluetooth module in the computer.  This was last Friday.  Again, I cancelled everything on my schedule to wait around for the tech.  The same tech came out and replaced the module (who knew this sort of thing could take several hours).  This time we tested it out after he finished.  Same thing, no bluetooth hardware detected.  He then got on the phone with Lenovo Care who instructed him to try all the same asinine things they asked me to try the day before.  In fact, I was joking and having a laugh with the tech as he worked, describing what they suggested.  They must have a playbook they follow, without actually thinking about a problem.  Anyhow, they couldn't get it to work, and the tech couldn't do anything else.  The last thing they suggested was to update the BIOS - even though the Bluetooth as working just fine before the first service attempt.  I could see that there was nothing he could do for me so I agreed.
I updated the BIOS, pretty straightforward process.  Not suprisingly, this didn't fix the problem, so within an hours after the tech left, I was back on the phone with Lenovo Care.  I described the problem and after another half hour on the phone they concluded that the system board needed to be replaced, perhaps because it was damaged due to overheating or whatever.  Like I didn't already suggest this originally.  Anyhow, they set up a visit for today (Monday), so again I cancel appointments and free up my schedule for the 3rd time in two weeks and sit around all day...AND NOBODY SHOWS UP!  I call in a 7pm to get an explanation as to why so they transfer me over to dispatch.  Honestly, a customer shouldn't be expected to know how everything works behind the scences at a company to get service.  First, the guy in dispatch lies to me and says that everyone is gone; when I refuse to accept this he miraculously finds someone to speak with.  They claim that they tried to call but were unable to reach me.  It's the exact same number they reached me at twice in the past two weeks!  After an hour on the phone and on hold, I get cut off.  I call back and speak to another rep who agrees to put me in touch with a manager.  After 6-7 mintues on hold, I get cut off when he tries to transfer me!  So, I call back, get another rep who looks up the case, then spend 15 minutes on hold.  Finally a manager gets on the phone with me and spends 20-30 minutes explaining that he cannot do anything at all for me.  And get this, after placing my call at 7pm and being on hold with various parties for 1:15, they tell me everyone in dispatch left at 8pm!
Now they can't even schedule someone to come out tomorrow, because it's too late to schedule a next-business-day repair (completely ignoring the fact that today was a business day when nobody showed up).   So now, the best possible result is that I waste another entire day waiting around for someone to fix this computer.  The worst case, of course, is that they don't show up again, or they show up and still don't fix the problem (seing as how they've failed 3 times already I don't have much confidence).
Thank god I paid extra for the 3 years of on-site service, however the actual service delivered has been quite substandard.  I know that some companies (Best Buy for example) will replace a computer if they cannot repair it in 3-4 tries.  So, what should I do.  I'll waste another day waiting around for a tech to show up, but then what?  Does Lenovo have a lemon policy for computers that they cannot fix after a reasonable number of attempts?  Do they have a policy for compensating people for missed appointments?  What about simply substandard service?  Anyone have suggstions on what else I can do, or who I should speak with?  I really feel that this situation is quite ridiculous, and I'm extremely frustrated with way these problems have been handled.  I haven't yet been able to speak with someone willing to take responsibility for the service that Lenovo delivers - just people saying "that's not my department", "I'm limited in what I can do for you" and on and on.
    Thanks.

  • Console Crashes OSX 10.5.8 (latest in a never-ending series of problems)

Ok I'll try to be as brief as possible. I have the the late 2008 aluminum Macbook with stock Apple memory.
I have had virtually no trouble with OSX or my computer in the three years since I bought this computer until last month.
    Background:
-Around the 27th of December, OSX crashed and forced me to shut it down by holding the power key. However, I was unable to restart the computer. After trying all of the various start up modes and booting from the OSX disk I ended up installing OSX on a backup drive which I was able to use copy over my files. Then I formatted the harddrive and wrote 0s over everything with disk utility before reinstalling a clean slate of 10.5.
-For a week or so everything was running smoothly. However, my charger shorted out and forced the computer to shut down for several minutes. When it did turn on again everything seemed normal.
-A day or two after that, Chrome was acting up and getting hung up on something in its cache. I trashed Chrome's cache and restarted the computer but it hung up on the grey screen. Also wouldn't start in safe mode. I did some googling, found this is normally due to a corrupted cache on the hard drive, so I used single terminal mode to wipe those files. After that it booted up normally and was fine for another couple of days.
    The new issue:
Yesterday it started hanging in random applications. First the application would lock up, and then when I switched to a different application that would lock up, and so on. Early on, it would resume as normal after a period between 20 seconds and a minute but towards the end of the night it progressed more and more. I opened up Console to try and make sense of the logs, and the whole thing froze and didn't come out of it for several minutes. This happens every time I try to open Console.
    Today I have:
-Reset the SMC, PRAM and NVRAM.
-Repaired disk permissions, verified disk. There are several permissions adjustments but they don't seem to stick.
-booted in safe mode. problem still occurs.
-booted in single user mode and ran fsck. Found some errors, the errors didn't seem to affect the problem one way or the other.
-trashed Cache files in /library/caches and /system/library/caches
    -trashed com.apple.dock.plist
-uninstalled all programs I've put on in the last couple days.
It's working more or less normally right now as long as I don't open console but I get the feeling I'm only treating symptoms. I am not sure where to go next. I foolishly left town without my OSX disk and running the hardware check by holding d doesn't work. It won't go into that mode.
Does anyone have any advice to at least get console running?

Boot off your *original* Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.

  • Never-ending iPhone contacts problem...

    Here's what's happening:
I add a contact on my iPhone, (from a text message from a new number for example)
The contact name will appear at the header of said conversation but does not transfer to the contacts app and subsequently to iCloud
The mac and iCloud are syncing fine and even syncing TO the phone, however, not FROM the phone.
Seems like an internal struggle on the iPhone itself.
I've spoken to Apple Care multiple times without resolve.
Also spoke to a Genius at a store who just recommended starting the phone from afresh and adding all apps etc.
The problem then is I lose 4 years of data from those apps and messages etc. That might be the final solution but I'm putting it to you, good people of the Support Community, to see if there are any other suggestions that might help...
    Many thanks,
    Ed

    Thanks Lawrence.
After some more restarting, resetting, iCloud on/offing etc. They are syncing through the way you suggested although sometimes that hasn't always worked either.
Just seems backward after I used to use MobileMe for the same thing with absolutely no problems...
Do you know any reason why contacts don't add from the local storage?
    Cheers

  • MSVC V5.0 IDE and CINs - custom build ??

    Hi everyone,
does anyone know how to solve the "custom build" problem under NT?
When I try to build the LVS-file Visual stops at "performing custom
    build step" with an error.
I've read the CIN reference manual, NI's knowledge base article
1F3ARTNV, MS's knowledge base article Q191495 and I've tried copying
various files to directories without long file names (just think about
it... Windows NT can't handle long filenames...).
I'd like to avoid postprocessing the DLL manually (so sad, so sad)!
    TIA

    Ray;
For some strange reason sometimes the custom step cause a lot of troubles when implemented in VC++. I created a small VI just to implement the custom step. You can downloaded from here:
    http://www.visecurity.com/tools.shtml
Look for the VI called CIN Custom Step
    I hope this helps.

  • Never-Ending transcoding/importing? Here's the fix.

    Symptom:
Transcoding keeps getting to 99% or so, and reverting back to 75% and continuing Ad Infinitum in a seeming never-ending loop.
    Problem:
    The registry is corrupted.
    Solution:
    1. Close all programs.
    2. Run Regedit.
    3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Adobe -> Common.
    4. Delete "Media Cache".
    5. Restart computer.
Another possible culprit has proved to be an application called "FindSounds Palette" and it should be uninstalled completely using the following method:
Uninstall "Find Sounds Palette" (FS Palette).
Delete the two registry key folders for "Comparisonics".
    Uninstall Encore CS3.
    Delete Registry Keys for Encore.
    Restart.
    Re-Install Encore CS3.
    Re-Install Encore 3.0.1 update.
    Restart.

Never should have been a question - sorry.

  • D10, boot problems, a never ending fan test!

I hate this noisy fan test!!! My dog always panics, if it is in the room! But that's not the problem.
If I switch on the external mains, the fan test starts and ends after some ten seconds.
If I push the switch at the front of the maschine, the fan test starts and - sometimes - never ends. In this case, the maschine - obviously - will not boot. What to do? - Repeat the procedure. Sometimes I need 10 or more attempts to boot the maschine.
Now I found (shortly before I decided to bring the maschine back to the dealer): The fan test succeeds nearly every time (and the maschine will boot), if I switch off all the external USB-devices (5 disks, WLAN-stick, memory stick, etc).
    My questions:
what's going wrong with the fan test at my maschine?
is it possible to skip this crazy fan test?
    Thanks for your help!
Lenovo PC Think Station D10 6427-H6G, Windows XP

regarding the fan test, this cannot be disabled.   thinkstations are designed for 24/7 uptime just like servers and the BIOS tests the fans at every boot/reboot.   since there isn't much reason to turn these systems off or put them asleep, the best workaround is to leave your D10 running 24/7 as it was designed to do.   mine only gets rebooted for windows updates, software updates, or video driver updates.   otherwise, it's up 24/7/365.
regarding the fans getting stuck, update your BIOS.   the latest version can be found here.
also, if you put your system to sleep, be sure to wake it with the power button and not your keyboard.   a few users have reported their fans getting stuck when waking with their keyboards.   i'm not aware of the issue happening when using the power button.

I printed a 'preview' document and now it continues to print a never ending set of copies.  I have re-installed the printer software, but it still continues to print more copies.  What do I need to do to stop the document printing?

    Try resetting the printing system.
    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
    2. Move your mouse over the Printers list
    3. Hold down the Control button and click the mouse
    4. Click the "Reset printing system ..." popup
    5. Restart your Mac
This will remove your print queues but not your printer drivers. So you will only need to add your printer queues again.

-All the devices run the same version of iOS

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. • Would you pay slightly more for a clean install of OS only when ordering a custom build?

I think HP should offer this. If its a custom build and you do not want any of the extra stuff. Just the OS and drivers loaded only. Pay a fee that is fair to the customer and at a reasonable price. I sure would. It would be nice if HP ever made that offer.

I agree and with recovery media !

  • CS5 custom build with GTX 285 for long-form 4k projects

I've been researching nonstop for several days, and it's time to ask for your expert opinions.  I would appreciate any help.
I'm ordering a new system for Production Premium CS5, and mostly I will use Premiere Pro CS5 to edit long-form projects (huge timelines with thousands of clips) of Red 4k footage.  It's a feature film with only a few F/X shots, but we'd like to do as much F/X, sound mixing, and color correction in CS5 as possible.
    Here is what I'm considering:
CUSTOM BUILD from CYBERPOWERPC (about $1950 including items not listed):

    1.  Do you see any poor or strange decisions?
    2.  I liked that mobo because of the chipset's possibilities and because it has 1394 for old-style DV capture.  Plus it has 8 SATA 2.0's, 2 SATA 3.0's, 2. eSATA 2.0's, and 2 USB 3.0's for huge/fast storage options in the future.  Is there some better alternative if I'm keen to have at least one of each of these formats?
    3.  I'll clone their 1TB OS drive onto a smaller 250GB drive to use as the OS drive, then use their 1TB drive as part of a 2TB RAID 0 video storage.  Will using the mobo's raid controller or some type of virtual RAID (like I did in Xp64) be fine, or do I need a separate RAID controller (like I had in the late 90's).
    4.  What do you think about that processor and RAM for what I'm doing?  Any reason to prefer 2 Quad-Core's (if dual processors are even compatible with CS5)?  Please let me know if the current configuration will lag with huge timelines with thousands of 4k clips.
    5.  Maybe I don't need the Creative sound card and could just use the mobo's sound?
    6.  Will it be simple for me to remove their graphics card and install an Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 myself?
    7.  The Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 seems like a good fit for GPU acceleration for me since I'm not expecting to have 4+ layers of videos, though I will be doing multiple effects on 1 or 2 layers.  Would having a Quadro FX give any advantage over the GTX 285 for huge timelines with thousands of 4k clips?  Or any advantages for any other use?
    8.  The GTX 285 has 2 DVI's as its only connectors (plus something that looks like S-video).  Can I use one DVI for my workstation and one DVI for monitoring video in realtime on an HDMI/DVI-equipped LCD TV or professional HD video monitor.  Any problems with viewing/outputting my 4k video in HD in realtime?  What is the best setup to view your video on an external monitor?  Back in the CS2 days I used a 1394 through a camcorder into an analog professional monitor, but that's not going to be HD, plus I heard there's a sync problem these days.
    Thanks for your advice.

    Thanks for your advice, everyone!
I'm gaining a lot of knowledge, but I have some followups so I'll break it down into subcategories and hopefully you can chime in on one or more topics.
To give more info about my daily use and purpose:
--smoothly edit huge amounts of RED 4k footage/clips and view the video externally in as high a resolution as possible (2k or minimum of 1k).
---no reason to have more than 3 layers visible at a time.
--the vast majority of the time only 1 video layer (with video effects) will be visible, with perhaps a handful of fades/dissolves during the entire 2-hour feature.
--I don't mind if it takes slightly more time rendering DPX files at the end, but I don't want any hiccups and never want to render during day-to-day editing and monitoring.
    GRAPHICS CARD and VIDEO MONITORS
    1.  I'm pretty much set on the GTX 285, but I wondered if for my purposes I'd get any significant benefit from the Quadro FX 5800 (+$2000-$2600) or the GTX 480 (+$100)?  Either in speed of playback or in output to external video monitors. The 5800 has 4GB RAM versus the GTX 285's 1GB, and the GTX 480 has 1.5 GB.   Does this RAM matter for what I'm doing or are the cores much more important?  Also, if I chose the GTX 480 then I'd have to pray that everything would be stable with a MPE/CUDA/GPU-acceleration hack, or hope Adobe comes through with full support of that card.
    2.  What is the 3rd output on the GTX 285?  There are two DVI outputs and then something that looks like S-Video.  Is it S-video out? Or an HD audio out that travels alongside the DVI output to an external video monitor?
    3. Does it slow down the system to send the video at 1k or 2k to an external video monitor since you'd be using both DVI outputs simultaneously?
RED 4k PLAYBACK and RAM vs CPU
    1.  For day-to-day editing, I'm fine scaling to 1/4 resolution if necessary and monitoring video externally at 1k or 2k.  Would my current system already achieve that smoothly?
    2.  From what I've gathered here and elsewhere, for better 2k or 4k playback it might be better to spend extra on CPU rather than RAM.  I could spend
--$1000 more for 24GB RAM (instead of 12GB)
    --$290 more for an i7 975 Extreme 3.33 GHz 8M Cache
    --$686 more for an i7 980x Extreme 3.33 GHz 12M cache.
Given my needs and the current total system cost of $1950, which of these 3 would you choose?  Or should I stay with the cheaper i7 930 2.8 GHz and overclock (which I've never done before).
    ECBowen:
It sounds like you've used a system similar to what I'm buying to playback RED 4k on a timeline in full, 1/2, and 1/4 scale.  I'd greatly appreciate if you could clarify YES/NO for which are possible to have SMOOTH PLAYBACK with your 980x/12GB RAM/GTX 285 system.  I know it's a lot to ask, but it would make me feel so much better about this big purchase:
-full scale 4k of 1 layer with 0 video effects
-full scale 4k of 3 layers with 0 video effects
-full scale 4k of 1 layer with 3 video effects
-full scale 4k of 3 layers with 3 video effects (NO, right?)
-1/2 scale of 1 layer with 0 video effects
-1/2 scale of 3 layers with 0 video effects
-1/2 scale of 1 layer with 3 video effects
-1/2 scale of 3 layers with 3 video effects
-1/4 scale of 3 layers with 3 video effects
    RAID CONTROLLER
    1.  I won't use the virtual/software controller.  The GigaByte UD5 says it has RAID 0, 1, 5, 10.  Does that mean it has an onboard hardware controller that I can configure in Windows 7 or using some software supplied with the mobo?
