Motion path handles disappeared

I've been working in After Effects for a little while now and am having some of my motion path handles not appear when they should. I'm working on a slideshow and they seem to appear for all of my other pictures. What I do is go in between the start and end point of a path and move my picture away from the main (straight) motion path I created which usually creates a new keyframe on my timeline and inserts a point on my motion path with two handles I can adjust to make the path curved. This time it just creates the point on the motion path and keyframe, but doesn't allow me to make the path curved. It's really strange and has happened to me before. The way I solved it earlier was to remove the point where it wasn't working and insert a new one, and it would magically turn on, but that doesn't seem to work now.
I've only been able to find one other person that had a similar problem online, which was solved by going to view---->view options and enabling 'view handles'. This didn't solve my problem so I figured I would ask on here. Thanks in advance for the help.

That worked, although it's a few extra steps that I shouldn't have to take (and haven't prior to this). I held down alt by mistake at first and it only gave me one handle, but if I just tap alt and then click--->drag away from the point, it does provide me with a handle in each direction, which is what I was ultimately needing. Here is a screenshot of that layer although it's pretty standard.
When I selected a keyframe that was in between the beginning and end of the motion path, pressed G, and then hit alt it does exactly what I want it to, but usually it adds the handles automatically, and want it to always. This extra step is very annoying because I'm dealing with a lot of motion paths and plan to in the future as well.

  • Object with Motion Path Disappears On Layers

    I have placed an image on the stage that I want to move from one object to another. (In this case, a "cookie" to move from a website image to a computer image.)
    I have placed the cookie image on top layer, and on top of the web site image.
    I have set up a motion path to move the cookie to the computer.
    When I preview, the cookie image literally disappears, in a "wipe" motion.
    I moved the cookie image to a plain area on the stage, and it moved just fine. It disappears only when layered with the other images, even though it is the top layer.  There is no "white space" that I should be dealing with on any of the images. The backgrounds are transparent.
    Any ideas?

    Here's a screenshot with the motion path:
    And here's a screenshot from preview. I left the background on here, and it actually looks like the square of the image is moving along the path, but the image itself moves out of the boundaries of the picture to the left (it's a .jpg file). That makes absolutely no sense.  This image has been resized (original is larger than the stage), but not cropped.  I have deleted and re-added this image several times.

  • Can't select handles on motion path

    Everytime I try to click on and move a handle from a keyframe on a motion path... it suddenly deselects. Sometimes I get the handle, most times I don't. Kinda funny, really. I would select the path, click on a keyframe to make the handles appear, then try to click on one of the handles, and the whole thing deselects. Over and over I go. Am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks, I can be a little at ease now that I know I'm not missing something. I did realize tonight that I do need to be very precise, but that just slows me down a lot. And often I still can't quite grab that handle. Perhaps they could add a Precision setting in Preferences which tells the cursor how close it needs to be to the handle to select it.

  • FCE HD, confused by Motion Path (I want to change the speed of movement)

    I am a huge FCE noob, let's get that out of the way. I have also been a member here since May of last year, but for some reason it now shows that this is my first post. (????) Anyway, I have figured out how to use a motion path, including curving the path, but I can't figure out how to alter the speed that a "motion path" video enters, or leaves, the screen.
    While I'm here, I also want to learn how to use shapes (as in a circle/triangle/custom shaped border to a video clip) and I have not been able to find that info. I have Lisa Brenneis's "Final Cut Express HD for Mac OS X" book and have not been able to find the answers to these two questions there.
    Thanks in advance for your useful help!!

    The first and last keframes can have Ease In/Ease Out applied to smooth the start or stop action.
    Clicking between two keframes on a a motion path should give you Bezier Handles. There a four blue dots on them, the inner two will control speed. Dragging an inner dot along the handle either slows or speeds the action.

  • How do you modify a motion path?

    I'm going through the Motion manual, and am in the Behaviors chapter. I can apply a motion behavior to an object, but the instructions for creating a curve don't seem to work. I can't create any bezier points either by double-clicking or option-clicking anywhere on the motion path (i.e., in the canvas??) as the manual instructs. I have looked through the archives, and I see that someone has asked this before, but the responses don't seem to answer the question. It doesn't seem to matter which selection tool I use. I know I can keyframe this, but I want to learn to use the Behaviors. I'm sure this is simple but I'm darned if I can figure it out...
    Thanks,
    Steve S.

    hi,
    have you checked that the Handles option is on in the View pop up menu?
    Also is the motion pth selected in the project? If so the tool mode changes automatically to an edit mode?
    Hope this helps.

  • I cannot see the yellow motion path in the composition window

    Yesterday the motion path was visible after unchecking and rechecking the motion path box in view options. But today it's not visible after trying several times the same thing. I'm trying to animate text using a path animation preset. I'm using an Imac with 24 gigs of ram and After Effects CC.
    I am very new to this program so I could be missing something very simple. Please help if you can.
    Thanks,
    Surya Mayee

    You may have pressed Ctrl/Cmnd + Shift + H and hidden all handles. Try resetting your workspace. Give us a screenshot of the whole project and don't scale it down. You can use this forum to upload the image by clicking on the camera icon. If the upload button does not light up then close the window and try again. Sometimes the upload window is buggy in Safari.

  • CP5 - W7 - TIPS - Motion paths

    I want to give back a little to this community, I got a lot of answers on my questions. And I am greatfull for the help.
    I wanted to animate an image to come up from the bottom, but could not find the right animation path. So...
    Follow this guide to learn how.
    You can do your own motion paths!
    Import an image
    Go to Effects
    press the f(x) symbol at the bottom right corner of the effect
    go to browse
    motion paths
    right-click on LeftToRight.xml and choose copy
    paste it in again and you will have something like LeftToRight-copy.xml
    right-click on LeftToRight-copy.xml and chose to edit, preferebly in notepad
    The code you will see
    <Motion duration="60" xmlns="fl.motion.*" xmlns:geom="flash.geom.*" xmlns:filters="flash.filters.*">
    <source>
      <Source frameRate="30" x="51.7" y="75.2" scaleX="1" scaleY="1" rotation="0" elementType="movie clip" instanceName="abc" symbolName="Symbol 1">
       <dimensions>
        <geom:Rectangle left="-97" top="-50" width="97" height="50"/>
       </dimensions>
       <transformationPoint>
        <geom:Point x="0.5025773195876289" y="0.505"/>
       </transformationPoint>
      </Source>
    </source>
    <effect_config  effect_type="motion_path">
    </effect_config>
    <Keyframe index="0" tweenSnap="true" tweenSync="true">
      <tweens>
       <SimpleEase ease="0"/>
      </tweens>
    </Keyframe>
    <Keyframe index="59" tweenSnap="true" tweenSync="true" x="400." y="0">
      <tweens>
       <SimpleEase ease="0"/>
      </tweens>
    </Keyframe>
    </Motion>
    The code you easy can undestand
    In the begining it says duration="60"
    <Motion duration="60" xmlns="fl.motion.*" xmlns:geom="flash.geom.*" xmlns:filters="flash.filters.*">
    More below in the code you see:
    <Keyframe index="0" tweenSnap="true" tweenSync="true">
      <tweens>
       <SimpleEase ease="0"/>
      </tweens>
    </Keyframe>
    <Keyframe index="59" tweenSnap="true" tweenSync="true" x="400." y="0">
      <tweens>
       <SimpleEase ease="0"/>
      </tweens>
    </Keyframe>
    0 to 59 is 60 steps
    You can by altering these values choose how long an object should move.
    Examples:
    Left to right: tweenSync="true" x="400." y="0"
    Right to left: tweenSync="true" x="-400." y="0"
    Top to bottom: tweenSync="true" x="0." y="400"
    Bottom to top: tweenSync="true" x="0." y="-400"
    Mov to left lowe corner : tweenSync="true" x="400." y="400"
    Continue with task
    Change the settings in your file LeftToRight-copy.xml and choose to save and close.
    Rename LeftToRight-copy.xml to for instanse TopToBottom.xml
    choose that path and animate your image
    Preview in browser (F12)
    Thats it you can do it!

    DPZ,
    That is awesome, I was kinda curious about exporting/importing effect XMLs. Thanks for the tutorial.
    I too wrestled with getting objects to animate the way I wanted. However, I found a different way to achieve what I think is the same thing, and it was all from the interface rather than the XMLs. There is shockingly spare information online and in help about the Cp5 effects, so I'll share this too in case it's helpful...
    First, from the Effects tab I did Add Effect (fx symbol) > Motion Path > LeftToRight. In my example below I added it to a text caption.
    Second, if you look closely at the object amongst the resize handles, you'll see a very small teal box in the lower-right corner. Click on it and you'll see a red arrow appear on top of your object (see below).
    That red arrow represents the start and end points of your motion path. So lastly, you can click on either the red "begin point" square and place it where you want, or click on the green "end point" arrow and place it where you want. Dragging the animation duration in the effects timeline will set how long it takes to complete the motion.
    So far in my experience, this works with any effect that is motion-based. I used it quite a bit on the Entrance and Exit set of effects.

  • Motion path red line missing?

    Hey.
    I've been using Motion 1.0.1 for about a year now and everything has been going great. Today I had my first problem. When I opened up motion and added the motion path behavior to one of my objects, the red line did not appear. I have played around with all sorts of view setting, window options, and looked though "Motion Help" as well. Nothing I have seen has worked. I just can't figure out how to get the red line to appear again so that I can edit it and continue with my project.
    Thanks for any help!
    -----prismi

    Ok. I've managed to be able to find the red line. It only appears if these conditions are fulfilled:
    1) I have done command slash to show the overlays
    2) When I control-click on the object to which I am adding the motion path I select "transform"
    3) My pointer tool must be the topmost transform/select tool (shift s)
    With all these the red line appears, but I can not edit it in any way. If I change any setting the line disappears.

  • Motion Path flatness question

    Hi All, I was trying to use a motion path behavior with a particle emitter as seen at the Motion Smarts web site. So I've added points to the path, turned those points into smooth points (you know with Bezier handles). But when I run it in the timeline the smooth path seems to become a series of flat small connected lines. Like if you were to adjust the "flatness" setting of an Illustrator path to get a series of connected flat lines. Does anyone know of a way to adjust the flatness of a motion path behavior?
    Thanks in advance.
    PS. If I could convert the behavior into a spline path I think that would work, but how.

    Never mind I used a b-spline instead of the motion path behavior. Which lead me toward the right direction of what I was trying to achieve anyway.

  • Move whole motion path 300 up, 200 left

    I have a complex motion path. I need to move the whole thing together, without changing it, 300 pixels up and 200 left.
    Is there any way to select it all and move it together - either with the mouse or by entering new co-ordinates?
    Thanks.

    Oh, I thought you meant the keyframes disappeared.
    I can't seem to make the element itself disappear from the Stage by grouping, although I can get it so the group appears empty, depending where the playhead is in regard to the the Location transition. But the element is always visible. That's not a bug, just the base state of the element when it was grouped. Maybe that's what you see?
    Otherwise, without seeing your composition it would be difficult to say whether it's a bug, or in some state in the timeline where the image is not on the Stage or hidden. Doesn't seem too serious if it's all visible again when you ungroup.

  • Motion Path Advice needed!

    I'm a newbie to Motion but absolutely love it. I'm using version 3.0.2 and want to learn how to move objects (or the camera) along a 3D sphere (or globe) shaped path. static example: http://twitpic.com/3wnm6
    Any advice? Thanks in advance for anyone willing to share tips or tricks on how to do this.

    For starters, maybe get a sense of Motion's 3D playing field:
    Create a new project.
    Create a Rectangle Shape.
    Add a Motion Path to it.
    Click on Add Camera. This switches your project to 3D.
    Make sure 3D overlays are on in View.
    Change your view to Top (top left of Canvas).
    Ctrl click one or both of the Control Points of the Motion Path, choose Smooth, and adjust the Bezier Handles to give the path a pronounced curve for the Rectangle Shape to move along.
    Change your view to Perspective (ctrl p). Orbit the Camera to get the right view.
    Press play and see how the Rectangle moves in 3D space.
    You can see how you could also apply to this Motion path to the Camera instead of the Shape.

  • 2D animation. Motion path+Appearing/Dissappearing Object

    Hey everyone, Looking for a simple (Flash is very complex-Power Point is too simple to do what i want) 2D animation software with Motion Path and "Appearing/Disappearing" objects. I have been looking for something that is actually easy to use but everything i find has a learning curve the size of titanic... I'm new to the subject (2d animation) and had no idea where to ask for help :/
    - I made a GIF showing something similar to what i want, it's a very simple GIF but should give you an idea of what i want to make.
    After watching i hope you will also understand why i am not happy about having to learn how to use something like Adobe EE or Flash.

    Thanks!

    Are you asking for help in learning AE or are you asking for an alternative animation tool?
    If you want to learn AE, it's pretty complex, but not impossible. I'd go through these resources first: Getting started with After Effects

  • Creating a trail of dots along a motion path

    Using image 'dot 2' and a motion path I want to re-create the old movie cliche of the dot which leaves a trail to show a journey from point A to point B. Currently I have Dot2 happily moving along a motion path from A to B - any ideas on how to create the trail of dots behind it?
    Thanks for any ideas

    One quick follow-up. This was easy with paint stroke tool as per the advice. One last step...the stroke 'write on' stops on frame 300 but the clip lasts until frame 400. Ihave th speed of write on set at natural. Currently the stroke disappears when the write on finishes. How do I get the final stroke outline to persist for another 100 frames? I thought there might be a 'hold last to end' as per Livetype font settings....but couldn't find it - or is using keyframes the answer? Thanks.

  • I am trying to use motion tracking to have text follow a section of the background.The text box follows the motion path, but the text just sits there.  What am I doing wrong?

    I am trying to use motion tracking to have text follow a section of the background.The text box follows the motion path, but the text just sits there.  What am I doing wrong?

    Motion basically looks at the the source footage and it's timing (in the timing section of the Inspector) when analyzing for tracking.  Filters are basically ignored by the tracker.  Retiming actions, like time re-mapping, or retiming behaviors that are applied before the tracker should be used by the tracker.  Did you change the timing after doing the tracking?  If so this would also require you to re-track the shot.  Understanding that you found a workaround, describing the effects you applied would help to explain why you ran into problems.
    Cheers!

  • How can I mass move symbols with their motion paths without creating new keyframes?

    I want to move a lot of symbols all at once if they are off centered or just need to be moved around to see differenr styles across the document, but I can't seem to move a lot of the symbols at once, only one at a time slexting their motion paths. It's rather annoying when I have items coming in at different times and have to re line everything up one by one if I want to move things even over by 1 px. Every time I slecect all my symbols and try to move them it just creates a new keyframe that they follow. Is there any tool or certian way to select the symbols and/or thier motion paths and move them without creating new key frames?

    Hi,
    There's no direct way of moving all the symbols/ motion tweens begining at different frames altogether, but the following steps should help you do it -
    1. Select a motion path on stage, goto Properties panel > Options menu (top left corner) and enable - Always show Motion Paths.
    2. Enable - Edit Multiple Frames option in the Timeline.
    3. Adjust the frame-markers in Timeline to show all your symbols, motion paths etc.
    4. Now that you see all your symbols and motion paths together, Select-all and Move them together. Or, use Shift + click to selectively select the Motion paths/objects and move them.
    Let me know if you have any doubts..
    Regards,
    Nipun
