Mounting CDROM as normal user about to pull hair out....

Hi everyone....
I'm about up to my wits end trying to allow my normal user to mount and unmount my cdrom drives...
Here's my /etc/fstab

I also added a new group called "mount" and added both root and my normal user to it.
I then did
chgrp mount /bin/*mount to change mount and umount to the mount group
then i did a
chmod 774 /bin/*mount
I also made sure that the 3 mount directorys in fstab existed and gave them 777 permissions...
Did a complete reboot... and the normal user still can't use mount... I get this error...
mount: must be superuser to use mount
I'm at my wits end. I believe fstab is correct. I believe my permissions are set correctly... Is there anything else I need to do?

Usb drive mount by a normal user

how can i make a normal user mount usb drives? i added a line in fstab that allows users to mount /dev/sdb1, but this solves only partially the problem

After a recent sys upgrade, I am having a somewhat similar problem. I can still mount my usb stick, but the permissions are now a little screwy (EDIT: i.e. permission denied when trying to change into /mnt/usb directory).
fstab entry:
/dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb vfat rw,user,noauto 0 0
after performing a mount /mnt/usb the permissions on /mnt are:
d-wxrw-rwx 6 root users 16384 1969-12-31 19:00 usb
well, the permissions on this drive seem strange to me, as well as the 1969 date. Additionally if I look at the directory as root everything is executable, which should not be the case. I've added my username to users and storage in /etc/groups to no effect. I can mount fine using pmount, but I would much prefer things my way, plus i dislike the idea of being forced to mount things under /media (notions of liberty and such)
Any thoughts or additional info needed? I've become stumped enough by this odd behavior to actually register and post.

Obtaining Row Clicked -- Pulling Hair Out

I am working on a nice simple master detail. I have created a datatable and made one of the columns an action link. In the action handler for the link I attempt to get the row data from the dataTable object (to which the view is bound). However, I receive an illegal argument exception when I try to retrieve it. Depending on the various things I have tried I have either gotten an illegal cursor operation from oracle or this illegal argument exception. Also, all of the values for the individual element objects (like linkActionTexr or outputText) are null when they come to my action handler. So, how do I go about getting this information??? What am I missing??

OK I have figured something out that appears to be part of the problem. Now, I just need a fix. The first time a click a link and go to the detail page I get an IllegalArgument Exception. What I am doing is in the acton for the link I store the getRowData (com.sun.jsfcl.data.DataCache.Row) in a session object. Then, on the next page, I pull values out of the map on that row and stuff them into fields. Is there some method or property that I need to set on the RowSetDataModel??

Error message - pulling hair out

I am pulling my hair out.
Every time I start Prem Pro I get the following message
“Prem pro could not find any capable video play modules – Please update your video display drivers”
Now this started suddenly yesterday and I have been using the programme all last week for a job I am half way through with no issues. It was very sudden
I am running vista 64 bit and an ATI radeon X1050 graphics card. 4GB ram
I have tried following
1/ disable anti virus and firewall - no
2/ system restore - no (twice)
3/ update video driver - no
4/ uninstall and reinstall cs4 suite
5/ msconfig - startup with no other applications or services - no
6/ kick the machine - no !!!
I am really at a loss. I have seen a couple of forums on the web covering this subject but so far nothing has helped me.
Any ideas please

As per the error message's text, this would have been my guess. Now, did you update with the latest driver directly from the ATI site? Can you roll-back to an earlier driver and try that? Can you check to see that your vid-card is, in fact, using the newly installed driver? Sometimes, installing an updated driver is not the most simple of tasks. With Matrox, one must first remove the old driver, reboot, then install the new one - don't know if that is still true. However, each site should have specific instructions on the exact steps required.
When things like this change, it's often some hot-fix from MS. Some can be rolled-back with System Restore, though a few cannot. Often, these will fritz both Audio and Video drivers quickly.
Though less often a fix in PrPro, than in PS, you might want to Move your Prefs files, and let PrPro rebuild them. You'll obviously have to change them, should you have any custom settings from default. Again, this is seldom necessary in PrPro, but happens to fix many PS problems.
Nothing else that I can think of right now.

Pulling Hair Out! Need Help: Adobe Prem 6.0 Distorted Audio playback in Timeline

O/S = Windows 2000 Pro
Adobe Premier 6.0
I am in the process of compiling a project in Adobe Premier 6.0, where, up until yesterday, it was playing back perfectly in the Timeline window. Unfortunately now, when I preview the project in the Timeline window, the audio has become distorted, out of sync, and is now 'slower' than the video footage (sounds a bit like a Darlek!), this also happens when I view a clip in the Monitor window. I closed this project down and started a new one, importing a seperate 'audio only' file, but had the same problem. I then opened a previous project that has always played back perfectly but that too had the same audio/video problem. I have checked the frame rate and the speed and both are correct and ok. Incidentely, the audio and video are in perfect sync when I play any clip in the Project Window!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can someone help me. I am pulling my hair out on this one!

Slowly pulling hair out

I have tried everything that itunes suggest for error code 3194 and nothing is working, my daughter put a password on her phone that she forgot but this error message is stopping me from restoring her phone, please someone help me as i am slowly pulling alll my hair out. We have 3 iphones and cannot update or restore any of them. we run norton 360 and someone said that could be interferring with itunes but it all says itunes is running properly. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

I recorded a basketball tournament championship games direct to disk using FCP6. Got the first half fine. did second half fine. Game was over and I was letting the announcer do his stats. A little kid came up and unplugged my external drive. I was left with a .av file. Can I recover this file? It is a 10gig file. PLEASE someone tell me I can. I know, yes I know I should have used tape as backup but I was doing a three camera shoot using a switcher. I came close to child abuse, but what the heck he was only a kid...

Now you know to save more often instead of having all of your eggs in one basket.
Your file was not properly "closed". If the Get Info window shows appropriate file size you may be able to add the needed info using a "hex" editor.
Not for the faint of heart but fairly straight forward. You need to find any "good" QuickTime file and compare the header (sometimes at the end of the file) data to your non-working version.
What you have now is the just the digital info but no way to open it. A can of tuna without a can opener and you want a tuna sandwich.
A hex editor allows you to open the "raw" file as something that looks like text. When you compare a working file with yours you should quickly see the difference. Copying the missing data from a working file and pasting into the broken one can sometimes fix the file.
You should have pulled the hair out of the little kid instead of your own. But you've also learned a very basic computer issue. Save. Save often. Save to other locations and media. You could have just as easily dropped your laptop and crashed the HD.
Google around for a Mac hex editing app. Many are free.

[SOLVED] Cannot mount usb (as normal user)

I'm facing this problem for the first time, but can't tell if it came after an update or an unexpected reboot (light went out).
I'm using latest kde (4.9.2?), and the latest kernel,
Linux gantz 3.6.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Nov 5 11:57:22 CET 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux
When I plug any usb device, kde ask me what to do. When trying to mount it, either from the kde "mount" plasmoid or from dolphin, I get a "Not authorized" error. Mounting via cli with sudo works fine.
After doing some research, I found that I need to be in the storage group in order to be able to mount, so I checked, and I was already on the storage group. Next.
More research sent me to lots of pages talking abour .xinitrc, wich doesn't exists (on my home, at least). Also tons of pages where talking about somethin like "exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch session-manager" (I login via kdm), but the ck-launch-session is not found on my computer either.
So i'm stucked right now, and don't know how to proceed, any clues? Thanks

on file /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy, everything came back to normal, and i'm able to mount usb devices.
pd @Raynman: removing myself from the storage group did not change anything.
that's not a fix, it's a crappy workaround. You are not supposed to touch these files, they will be overwritten on an upgrade. My guess is that you are simply not using systemd and therefore you are not in an active logind session. You have to boot with systemd, as mentioned in the news. Everything should then just work out of the box.

Mail will not load in mavericks - been pulling hair out for about a day

Can anyone help with a point by point solution. Sure do miss Steve these Days, I dont think this would have happened under his watch.

I have the same problem with both my home and work connections. Mail App does not connect. Mailbox pinwheels and turns into the alert triangle.
I don't think this is not a firewall issue, I have been into both my work and home firewall settings for both connections and my MacBook personal firewall is off. No other software like peer guardian, etc.
This problem began about a week ago. Even from my iPad mail seems sluggish.
Web based .me services seem fine.

Intermitent VISA Write error - Pulling hair out

Running an app that uses a couple serial devices. One is a stepper drive that is controlled by simply sending command strings to the drive controller via serial connection.
Have had to update to Win 7 (from XP) and as well upgraded to LV 2013. Now all of the sudden I get errors from the vi that writes to the serial port. Sometimes it goes for a couple hours before popping up, sometimes 15 minutes. There is not even much consistency as to which iteration of the vi pops the error. I have added delays here and there, put a delay in the write vi (attached), added a clear buffer before the write, etc, etc. This bug will not go away. this is the error that pops up..
I have attached the vi. It is about as simple as they come which is why I am pulling what little hair I have left out. Two changes in this version from the original that ran forver on the XP system, the 150 ms delay between Write and Close (since increased to 400) and I have also changed the timeout on the Configure from 10000 ms to 5000 ms (10 sec to 5 sec).
Once this happens then all serial connection with the computer is hosed and I have to reboot the system to get going again. The computer, a relatively new dell, has one built ini serial and I am using a StarTech expansion card for two additional ports. (2 Port PCIe RS232 w/ 16550 UART)
ANY help is much appreciated on this as having to go reset the system 10-15 times a day is killing me.

Ok... Have created the AE as suggested. In fact, took the opportunity to convert another serial device to that format as well. The third device was already configured that way. As I mentioned, I have used that method before, just not by that term.
Since that change, the error has popped up once yesterday and once again so far this morning. And still, once it does, all my serial communication is hosed and the system has to be rebooted.
So is this still a LV issue or could it be connected to the addon serial IO card that I am using. I mentioned the brand/model in the first? post. I tried to get a more mainstream brand as I had tried an off brand at one point and had dismal results.
I have attached the modified vi I am now using for the stepper control. (includes a couple additional vi's that are used inside it to generate strings & a typedef). I am using the Init case once during the initialization of the system. I use the Close case only once when exiting the application. At all other times, I am using only the Write case. If there is a reason to stop the process during assembly, the Kill case can be called which simply sends a kill/stop string to the stepper control. This rarely happens and has not been used when the error occurs. There are a couple blank cases I made for future use so I can use this as a template for other projects.
The last few times, the error is showing up on the third Write of the assy sequence. This after completing dozens of succesfull assembly sequences. I am tracking this by placing error cases at the end of each step in the sequence with booleans in each error-true state so I get a true for the particular step that generates the error.
I have added a ton of probes this morning to see if there is anything else in the code the comes up unusual when this occurs.
Note that I have left the Termination Character Enabled set to True in the newer code though it was False in the original code. Any detriment with that?
Any benefit in adding a Clear Buffer just before the Write to make sure there is not some anomalous character that gets thrown in at the front of the string?
Just need to get this behind me.

Can't get folders to stay in column view... pulling hair out!!!

It doesn't matter what finder view options I set, they work for 1 or 2 times opening a finder window in column view, then goes back to the icon view. I hate icon view!!! What is the ridiculous deal with this and how can something so chump-change, penny-ante as keeping a simple folder view preference be so ridiculous as to migrate from one version of OSX to the next!?!?? At least there was an app in 10.4 that was in Utilities that you could log in as root, reset the windows the way you wanted and then log back out. Ridiculous that you had to do that kludge, but it worked... but I can't find that application anymore in Leopard... arghhh! Wow, I feel a bit better to have vented Can anyone help me fix this so I can always have Column view as the default... and possible save my sanity in the process?

Mac OS X: How to Save a Finder View (Column, Icon, or List) for a Specific Folder or Disk
It appears the Finder only keeps the desired setting if set on a newly opened window. If the folder was navigated to within the window and the setting is changed, that setting is temporary. So you need to (temporarily) set the Finder to open folders in a new window (Finder Preferences) so any window you navigate to is a new window, a "starting point". Then you can actually save that folder's setting. Note you can leave the "Show View Options" window open as you change between windows and it relates to the active window. Once all your desired folders are set, you can uncheck to open folders in new windows.
I usually navigate in column view and of course clicking through folders in column view is not the same as opening a new window so I had to create aliases of some folders to test with but this worked for me.
(hmm, further testing, they seem to keep for me even when set by navigating to it within a window.... but this might be worth a try)

Trying to assign an expression pedal to modulation. Pulling hair out.

I bought an Alesis 88 MIDI Keyboard and need to use an expression pedal for modulation. While trying to do this (hitting cmd + L) I assigned the mod wheel to volume now and can't get that back. Where can I find modulation so that i can click on it and assign it to a controller?

Yes, modulation tends to be hardcoded for MIDI CC 1, so youi'll have to transform your CC 11 (pedal) to CC 1.
Open an Environment window, cmd-8.
via the little dropdown on the top left corner, go to the Clicks & Ports layer.
From the local menu New, select a Transformer. Cable and set up as shown in the pic.

Welsh lady pulling hair out over upgrade!

I can see many people have problems just like me but i'm struggling to keep up with all the advise given to all... I've upgraded, as requested, to itunes 6 but now unable to open folder. Double click on same and get this message: iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close... I've tried the advice given to install QT as a standalone and saved it to file. I get so far through the process and then the following message comes up: Error Number 0x8004077
DLL function call crashed. QT installcode. Quicktime Post InstallProc. Set up will now terminate. Short of throwing computor in bin I don't know what else to do.. I'm running AVG antivirus. No firewall at mo. Tried closing antivirus etc but to no avail... Please please help me!

I went back to a System Restore point prior to the upgrade and then reinstalled iTunes and it works.

hmmm. the 0x80040707 can indicate a savagely stuck and broken QT. the standard treatment for that scenario (there are a couple of other possible causes we have to watch out for) is to head in with the Windows Installer Cleanup utility and strip out the installation registry entries for the broken QT. so i think your System Restore here will have had the same effect.
many thanks for the report! this could come in really handy in cases where Windows Cleanup itself is desperately unhappy on a person's PC.

Unhandled Security Error - pulling hair out

IE10 and Chrome are fully updated on Windows 8. Nearly all YouTube videos fail to play with a generic error ("An error occurred please try again later") in both browsers. YouTube Advertisements seem to play fine. I followed all available recommendations such as clearing cache, deleting all AppData\Local flash files, rebooting, etc. Downloaded Opera and latest flash player (since Chrome and IE10 have built-in flash player), same error, even running as Administrator. Modified variety of flash player settings, such as disabling hardware accelleration, etc. As a last resort, installed the debug version of flash player. In Opera I see errors such as:
Error #2044: Unhandled securityError:. text=Error #2048: Security sandbox violation: http://s.ytimg.com/yts/swfbin/watch_as3-vflX3YzPw.swf cannot load data from http://r8---sn-mv-a5ms.c.youtube.com/videoplayback?gir=yes&key.......
How do I fix this? I just want to play videos!

Do you have the standard or debug player installed? Such errors should not occur with the standard player.

progressive download, etc. in the inserting tool. When I try to
play it off of my server nothing happens yet the player is there.
If I 'preview in browser' locally it plays. I'd really appreciate
any help!
