Mouse and Audio stutter/freezes with Intel ICH9R AHCI drivers

edit: Initially (in original post) I suspected the random mouse and audio stutter/freezes were from a driver update. However between a reboot during these updates I had disconnected an eSATA cable from a drive that was not powered. It turns out the ICH9R when running in AHCI or RAID mode with appropriate drivers installed has problems with some HDDs when the drive isn't powered but the SATA data cable is connected. This is quite normal in SATA enclosures which I have plenty.
What makes this more puzzling is that the stutter/freezes are very tiny and hard to notice IF you don't have any PCI cards connected. With a Intel 100 Mbit PCI NIC connected these stutters became real blocking issue that would have prompted me to return this Gigabyte G33 motherboard (Also affects P35) to the shop had I noticed this issue sooner. I'm not yet sure whether this stutter w/ AHCI/RAID issue affects only the Gigabyte boards but what is certain is that it does affect these in quantity based on how there's others reporting the exact same issue if googling around.

This issue has been confirmed not to be limited to just my system.

Same problem here, it's not limited to Vista, also happens on XP/2003 both 32/64 bit. I'm 99% sure it's to do with the Intel AHCI/Matrix storage driver. It'd be interesting to know what your motherboard brand/model is. Mine is Gigabyte DS2R and I've seen reports of this issue on other forums as well. I'm using the integrated Intel graphics and every component is Intel except Audio Realtek and Network Broadcom. The issue goes away by disabling AHCI/RAID but you lose hot-swap of SATA drives and NCQ.
The primary indicator for this issue is that if any of the SATA ports has a drive that is plugged in but not powered up (and not powered down by the AHCI driver programmatically) then you get this global stutter/studder/hickups/choppy. In audio it sounds like tiny repeats. How bad it is seems to depend on what drive brand is plugged in etc so on some combinations it's very tiny and doesn't happen that often, on other drives it's more constant and easy to detect.
I'd suggest you report at:

Chipsets/Chipset software/Matrix storage Technology
btw. My AHCI BIOS/OROM version that is shown on boot with AHCI/RAID enabled is iSRC 1.07 08042006, what's yours?

Though most posts in this thread involve laptops and many of them attempt to isolate the problem in wireless network adapters, let me assure you the same problem can show up in a desktop with wired-ethernet-only. (Admittedly, it's a Realtek onboard gigabit LAN, and Realtek has been fingered by a number of you for its drivers, at least its audio drivers.)
On a brand new core2-quad P35 chipset machine with 4GB ddrII, with a completely clean install of Vista 32 business, I have been suffering intermittent global stuttering. It affects not only audio (of any sort, through any player, whether or not dsp-enhanced) but also video (you can see it in screen saver motion, for instance) and even cursor or mouse movement (hit and hold the spacebar in a text editor and watch the stuttering fun begin!). It's intermittent but not random; that is, it can disappear for a while after I apply one of my stab-in-the-dark fixes (read on) but can come back and then generally remains until I re-apply a fix. It's been like this since about day 1. Well, maybe day 2 or 3.
I've seen so many variants of this problem posted in so many forums, with so many theories, that I could spend the next three months doing nothing but troubleshooting it, assuming I had the budget and time to try endless substitute components or re-builds from scratch, but there's no assurance any or all of that would actually fix it. I do have the Intel Storage Matrix AHCI drivers pre-installed, and Intel itself vaguely alludes to possible 'degraded performance in Vista' with regard to those drivers--is this what they're talking about? They don't say. I do have an Nvidia 8800gts, and Nvidia forums are full of complaints about unacceptable issues with their video drivers, but again it's vague, no smoking gun for global stuttering. I have tried THREE different audio configurations--the onboard realtek hi-def; an x-fi elite; and a c-media based Omega Claro card. I have the problem with all of them. Discovering how musical the c-media card is was a happy accidental side effect of this miserable odyssey, but it really just makes it more frustrating, since I now want to listen to music more than ever but can't find a permanent solution to this vexing problem.
One of the weirdest symptoms is that the stuttering can re-appear (if it has been gone for a few days) just by connecting an external SATA drive, even if the drive is not turned on! Equally weird: simply going into the BIOS and just looking, changing nothing, exiting without saving, can cause it to reappear upon re-boot!
And to ice this cake of weirdness, here are some things that can make it go away (sometimes, at least for a while): removing the external SATA drive and rebooting; removing and re-seating the cards on the motherboard; and clearing the BIOS (jumper or pull out the battery) and then re-entering all the same settings as were there already.
The symptoms are driving me nuts, as audio is one of my main uses for a computer, but it's the HUH? quality of these various actions that can seem to make the problem disappear or re-appear that are really threatening my sanity. If anybody can sift a better clue out of these ashes of frustration than I can, I wish you would post it.

  • Playback pauses and audio sync issues with live video stream

I'm seeing playback pauses about every three seconds and audio sync issues with our live demo stream when using the OSMF/Strobe player.  It happens on both our 2Mbps 720p stream and our 480p 750Kbps stream so it does not seem to be related to higher resolution/bandwidth streams.  It also happens if I point directly to a stream asset or if I point to a .f4v with both streams listed for dynamic so it does not seem to be related to dynamic streaming specifically.
The same live streams play back very well without pauses or audio sync issues in the Akamai's dynamic player and even slightly better with JW 5.2.
I have viewed the OSMF/Strobe playback on three different laptops of various age (3 months to 2 years) and two are Windows and one is Linux.  I have also tried the various buffering options on the Flash Media Player Setup and Strobe setup and it has not made a noticeable difference.
To see the stream with the Akamai player, go to:  http://live.kulabyte.com
To see the stream with the OSMF/Strobe player, go to:  http://live.kulabyte.com/osmf
I do not have JW set up for public viewing yet, but the two above show the distinct difference.
We are really hoping to start pointing our customers towards the OSMF player because of the support provided by the community and Adobe, but we have to get the quality of the playback to be acceptable first.
If someone has ideas on debugging I can PM the actual video assets to you.
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi Tim,
You need to add this setting:
    dynamicStreamBufferTime=8
The actual value can be higher or lower. The best practice is to use a value that is twice the keyframe distance. Anyway, try different values and see which performs the best for your content.
I know that the setup page does not contain this option and it is not documented in the UserGuide. We simply missed it. Sorry.
Also note that the dynamic buffering algorithms are not being used for dynamic streaming content. I tried to explain this here:
    https://sourceforge.net/adobe/smp/wiki/Dynamic%20Buffering/
Looking forward to your confirmation that this solved your issue.

  • T520 - 42435gg / Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance with Intel Rapid Storage AHCI Driver

    Hi everybody,
I have serious Problems with my 42435gg
Any time I install the Intel Storage AHCI Driver (I've tried plenty of different versions) which is suggested by System Update I experience a horrible Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance in Windows 7 64-Bit.
The funny thing in this case: If the external e-sata port is connected the problems do not occur. If the port is unused again, the stutter begins immediately.
The only thing I can do is using the Windows internal Storage Driver with which I am not able to use my DVD recorder for example.
The device was sent to lenovo for hardware testing with no result. It was sent back without any repairing.
    Anybody experience on this?
    Kind regards,
    Daniel

Did you try the 11.5 RST beta? Load up DPClat and see if DPC conditions are favorable.

  • Mouse and computer sporadically freeze on websites.

Periodically, my mouse freezes when I'm web surfing. Or leave a website open for a prolong period while doing something else at home. The only fix is to turn off the computer and reboot it. During freezes, I can't exit a website, I can't even shut down the computer normally or access task master or anything. I have to hold down the power on button until the computer shuts off or shut off the surge protective power strip. Sometimes the mouse will unfreeze on its own but shortly thereafter goes back to its old trick of freezing.
Today, I got it into my head that the problem wasn't my computer or some software interfering. So I logged on using something I dislike using, Internet Explorer. After going through the same motions as usual, including visiting websites that have frozen before, I experienced no freezes. This indicates the issue if Firefox. I have even opened multiple Tabs to provoke a possible freeze with IE but it doesn't freeze So again it must be Firefox.

  • Leopard and Audio Stutter Requiring Restart

Ever since installing Leopard, there will be some random event that causes audio to start stuttering and the only way to stop it is to restart the computer. I use Guitar Rig 2 very heavily but it isn't just the tracks with GR2 active that stutter. Once it goes, it's all the way gone and affects all audio. I normally use headphones and can sometimes go two hours before it fails but it doesn't seem to survive more than five or ten minutes when I'm using the monitors hanging from the audio interface. That kind of points to Presonus incompatibility but the best course of action is not at all clear. Any help would be appreciated as a back-out would be next to impossible.

I finally have a chance to get back and check Q&As/Posts. I actually solved my stuttering, indirectly thru another issue. During the 10.4 OS update, my dock (in Leopard screen) dissappeared. In the attempts to recover it, I fell back on my PC way of thinking and decided to re-install the 10.4 update, and wa-lah, the dock was back, and the stutter stopped and has not returned to this day. It appears the updates could have something to do with it, in addition to, things like a cell phone near by, frequency interference from other electronics, etc. However, I still think it's often an update related matter.
Here's a discussion on the issue, and also do a search in support with "Macbook audio stutter" and do the search for the last 90 days. The search will yield some good discussions, even more relevant ones the last 30 days, one person noting stuttering started after their upgrade to 10.5
    Hope this helps.

  • Mouse and keyboard stop working with Mavericks

This has happened twice now since installing Mavericks.
I'll be working along, and then all of a sudden, I am not able to click with my mouse and my keyboard stops working. I AM able to move the cursor around on the screen. But, I am not able to click on anything and I can't use the keyboard to force quit the finder. The only way to get unstuck is to press the power button on the front of the Mac to shut it down and then restart.
I am using a wired Apple Keyboard and a wireless Apple Magic Mouse. My Mac is a MacPro 2 x 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac.
Like I said. this has never happened before. But it's happened twice since installing Mavericks.

Everytime I restart my computer, especially for updating maverick, my keyboard and attached mouse (both apple for an Imac) stop working. When I plug in an other keyboard, I can get into my Imac again. Would this SMC apply to this problem as well?
    What should I do?
    thanks, hb

  • MOUSE AND KEYBOARD KEEP FREEZING- Have to constantly unplug to unfreeze!!

    Hi There guys,
I have a really annoying problem with my white emac… (made even more annoying by the fact that I just bought it!!)
My mouse and keyboard keep on freezing. I have to constantly pull out the cords from the usb to get it unfrozen. After I do that it starts working but then freezes again.
This happens every 5-10 seconds. I have tried switching the cords in the different usb ports and I have even switched keyboards from my new white keyboard to my old imac black one… The problem still persists!
Does anyone have any answers as to how I can fix this?? It's got progressively worse.
I can’t return the computer because it is not under warranty.
I have downloaded OS X 10.3.9 again recently to try and fix the problem but it is still here.
    Please help me!!!

  • Video and audio not synchrone with apple tv after update mountian lion on macbook pro

i have a problem with my apple tv. after i bought and instaled mountain lion on my mac book pro i have trouble with apple tv and my laptop. when my laptop conects with apple tv most of the time my wifi doesnt work on my macbook but on my apple tv it stil does work. when it does work and i play a movie of my own by using itunes the first second the video and audio is synchrone but after that audio is at normal speed but the video gets behind. and i am getting sick of it. does sumbody reconize the problem and can help me with this problem?????

Same issue here- I can airplay my amazon prime library just fine from my iphone 5 but on my macbook- (mavericks, 15 inch 2013 retina with quad core i7, nvidia 650 M and SSD) it just sputters and lags.
I have noticed web video is considerably worse than local content, giving me pauses of up to 2 or 3 seconds in which video stops but audio continues in the amazon player. Youku video, however, seems relatively stable. Our subscription speed is 25 mbps, so that should be plenty to stream SD video from Amazon and doesn't account for why it would be nice and stable from the iphone, but not the mbp.
Playing light, locally hosted steam sidescrollers  like Limbo is better but gives periodic drops in framerate on the Tv. when mirroring the framerate remains steady on the MBP screen.
Games airplayed from my iphone seem relatively stable, though with a noticably lower framerate on the TV than on the phone.
It seems these issues have abated considerably since yesterday's Apple TV update, but are still curious nonetheless and I'm not sure that the update yesterday was specifically meant to address those issues or if I'm just getting a time with less network interference now.
Comcast recently installed a new router/modem/phone combo, replacing our old separate modem and router setup. I'm going to test if putting the network on a different channel helps.

  • Magic Mouse and Apple Wireless Keyboard with Bootcamp and Win XP Pro 32-bit

Does the Apple Magic Mouse and Apple Wireless Keyboard work with Boot Camp running Windows XP Pro (32-Bit)... I read something leading me to believe there maybe a problem and you need to use a wired USB mouse/Keyboard.
    Is this true?

Apple Wireless Keyboard is able to work in Boot Camp via Window XP Pro, it's good enough.
but the Magic Mouse, it's not able to work completely in Window XP Pro,
it's just work like a normal bluetooth wireless mouse,
all the Multi-Touch features like scroll, rotate, swipe, pinch and tap click are not gonna work,
even you are configure via the snow leopard, so please be reconsider.

  • Mac Book Pro - Mouse and Track Pad Freeze

I left my mac book pro asleep for a few hours, everything had been working fine. When I returned it would not wake up so I restarted it.
It makes the chime and comes to the password page as per normal. Then I cannot move the mouse and the keyboard does not work. Also impossible to select Caps lock (light does not come on)
    Things I have tried:
    PRAM
    Safe Start Up Mode
    Attaching external keyboard and mouse
Restarting holding down ctrl, apple and power key
No luck with any of the above.
    Any ideas.
    Thanks in advance!

It's not completely clear if you are using an external USB mouse. Some people use the term "mouse" for the clicker bar so I want to make sure I understand how you are set up instead of guessing.
If you are not using an external mouse, remove the battery and inspect it for bulging or other deformation. That can put upward pressure on the underside of the trackpad assembly and take it down, often taking the built-in keyboard with it.

  • Yosemite airplay video and audio stutter

After upgrading to the official Yosemite /not the beta version/ on my iMac 2013 and MBP the airplay streaming of video and audio through any of my two Apple TVs results in intermittent audio and video stuttering which can drive one crazy. Sound and picture are choppy no matter from which computer or to which apple tv streaming is implemented. Any advice how to fix this issue - airplay has become practically unusable to me and family....

You can see here that many people report for this problem.Unfortunately, OS X Yosemite has a minor bug and can stream correct video and audio to Apple TV via AirPlay. You can not do nothing expect to wait for next OS X update. I have same problem and can use my apple TV.
I don't know why Apple doesn't fix this before official OS X Yosemite release, because this problem was report in there beta program from many users.

  • Will magic mouse and wireless keyboard work with my G4?

hello, i have a 1.25 Ghz ppc g4 imac and have leopard installed. i was wondering if i get a bluetooth dongle and a magic mouse and wireless keyboard would it work? would i also need a special kind of bluetooth adapter? i already have airport extreme, im going for the modern mac one wire (power cord) look. thank you.

According to this on the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB829LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1Mg
the Magic Mouse requires at least OS 10.5.8 whcih you don't have.
The current wireless keyboard requires 10.6 which cannot run on a G4 iMac.
I would look to third-party solutions. I like Logitech input devices:
    http://www.logitech.com/en-us/home
However, even the Logitech devicez may require a higher version of the Mac OS than you have. Be certain to check system requirements very closely before buying something.

  • GUI Freezes but SSH, mouse and audio continue

Every now and again, my Mac Mini's GUI will freeze except I will be able to move the mouse cursor (not click), whatever audio is currently playing will continue, and I'll have SSH access from my MacBook Pro.  I have SSH'd in and looked at 'top' to see if any processes are hogging the CPU, and I've never seen any out of the ordinary processes.  Sometimes a command of 'sudo shutdown -r now' will restart the computer but other times I have to do a hard reset with the power.
How else can I diagnose this?  What terminal commands should I be using to discover more information?

  • Audio and video stutter problems with .mov

    Hi there, guest newbie here…..
I’ve searched high and low for a solution to this problem but with no luck.
Once upon a time I updated itunes to version 7 I think it was, and it caused all my tracks to stutter on playback. I then reverted back to 6.whatever and it solved the problem. I have been enjoying a stutter free life ever since…..until….
I bought a tutorial DVD made up of lots of .mov files, when I tried to play one the video and the audio stuttered.
However, when I fired up itunes, tracks in there played fine.
Maybe it was the dvd?? So I put it in my laptop and it played fine!
OK….. so I updated everything to their latest versions (Jan 09) on the other computer including:
    Quicktime
    Adobe Flash
    Soundcard (RME Multiface)
    Graphics card (Geforce FX 5200)
I even tried using different media players to play the .mov files.. but NOTHING WORKED.
I’ve played around with settings on each player i.e. ‘safe mode’ on quicktime, but again nothing worked. In fact this setting auto switches back to what it was when I try to play the file.
Is anyone experiencing the same problems and does anyone have any more solutions to this problem????
    Many thanks in advance

Sounds like his cashe is full. Clear his cashe out. You can do that in internet options and depending on the version of IE if that's what he is using you will find a option in there to delete temporary files. Delete everything from there, then restart IE, and he should be good to go.
