My Book Live Duo appears to have died. How do I determine what failed

Drive is making a squealing noise. Seems to make a noise with or without the drives.I cannot access the drive over the network. I have attempted to reinstall the software and find the drive with the search utility. The indicator light starts blue and then turns to amber. Do I need to purchase a new enclosure? What are my options? How can I test the drives without investing in another enclosure. I have 2 2TB drives setup in a mirror RAID configuration. Can't imagine both are bad.

If it's making an audible noise with no drives inserted, the enclosure has a failing component somewhere.   There's no moving parts in the enclosure (no fan, etc.) Is it too old for a warranty claim?

  • My Book Live Duo Remote Access

I currently have an iMac and use Time Machine to back up my desktop to a My Book Live Duo External Drive.
My Book Live is supposed to allow for remote access to files. When I click on WD2go app, I can see the public shares as well as the Time Machine Share. However, when I try to see the files in the Time Machine Share remotely, I don't have files that can be accessed.
I know the back up is successful because I can see the files on the external drive when I am on the desktop. Does Time Machine put the backup files in a certain format such that I can't see them remotely on my iphone or ipad.
I also have a Windows desktop that also backsup to My Book Live Duo. I use the WD Smarware to backup that desktop. Unlike the Time Machine backup, I have no problem see and accessing the files backed up through WD Smartware.
Has anyone else experienced this problem??

I'm seeing the same pattern; Updated my system to 02.43.10-048 (from 02.11.09-053) and got a message with just ??? in Event Title and Description and nothing in the event code. An hour later I get a message about temp returning to normal (event code 2003). Everything was fine for about 30 hours, then I got ??? messages every 30 minutes followed by an event code 2003 for about 4 hours (middle of the night, no activity on the drive) yesterday I started to get a series of these with a scattering of notices of successful firmware updates (and corresponding reboots) with no change in the firmware version. We turned off auto-update. Just adding data to the thread at this point, the system is at home and I'm in the office so I can't do any real investigation on it.

  • WD Book live duo, Probleme beim Kopieren (Fehler 59...), Firmware-Update nicht möglich

Seit eineinhalb Jahren benutze ich das WD Book duo
    Seriennummer WUZ234702481
    My Book Live Duo-Firmware
    Version:
    MyBookLiveDuo 02.43.03-022 : Core F/W
    Letztes Update:
    Mo 01 Apr 2013 19:02:17 CEST

  • My Book Live Duo 02.43.10-048 overheating warning gone

Hi, I updated to the latest version ( http://community.wd.com/t5/My-Book-Live-Duo/New-Release-My-Book-Live-Duo-Firmware-Version-02-43-10-048-6-22/td-p/880844 ) and whereas before I received e-mails when the unit was overheating, now I don't. I noticed that the front LED was red and shut it down. No warning e-mail was sent and normally two or three e-mails should be sent warning about overheating before it reaches this stage. Warning e-mails are sent for other conditions (intermittent network or system restart) are sent properly so it's not a case of misconfiguration or e-mails suddenly not getting through. In the firmware version previous to this one the event title and event description had a set of question marks instead of proper descriptive text but at least it was sending something saying something was wrong, which turned out to be the overheating warning. This warning is necessary as I live in a hot climate, even rolling back to the previous imperfect warning would be useful to me. Is there any way to log in via SSH and do something like fixing or starting a temperature monitoring process? Thanks, Dan.

My ios 7 download appears to have worked, then it tries to validate, fails and says Software Update Unavailable - has happened 3 times so far

Thanks - I didn't realize there were separate validation servers.  I've continued to try - 3 more failures - I will keep trying.  The download worked in a timely manner so I thought I was "over the hump" :-)

    - Did this start happening after an iOS update? Sometimes an iOS update will break compatibility.
    Sometimes this works:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings

  • Time Machine restore from WD my book live duo

Dear all and especially anyone out there who may be able to help me.
I have a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion, a WD mybook live duo 3/6tb on the LAN, all wired.
It has been backing up through Time Machine fine until my MacBook crashed earlier this week so I have a fairly
recent snapshot of my MacBook before the crash.
I wanted to restore, after a Hard Disk erase which seemed necessary, from Time Machine but I couldn't make it work
as it kept asking me for user names and passwords of the NAS (which I entered of course) only
to result in error meesages saying the 'share' didn't exist. (Despite the fact that it does immediately
recognise the backup and location on the NAS.)
WD support advised me to first reinstall OSX ML and then use the regular Time Machine
    functionality to restore my Mac.
    - there is no option to fully restore your Mac through the wonderful TimeMachine time travel
functionality. I tried to restore my Macintosh HD back to a recent time point but that resulted in
nothing much (or nothing at all, I don't know). I don't see my old stuff, I still see a kind of vanilla
    OSX ML installation.
    - using the restore functionality (CMD-R during startup) and the time machine restore option,
results in the same nagging for names and passwords and error messages that the share
    doesn't exist.
WD support couldn't tell me what the share name (and possibly password) would be for where it stores Time Machine backup
files (it doesn't show up in the list of shares when you look in the WD dashboard) and that makes sense to me as when you
tell Time Machine to use the NAS, it doesn't ask you for anything in terms of shares or passwords either.
So here I am: with probably a very good and recent complete backup at my disposal but no way of restoring it to my Mac.
So all I had and trusted to Time Machine is lost.
Is anyone out here who can help me? Anyone with a similar experience and hopefully solution? (That I can understand....I am a Mac user! :-) )
    I would be enormously grateful!
    Greetings from Amsterdam,
    Eric

Hello Eric, not sure if this helps or is exactly what you are looking for as I am unfamiliar with the NAS issue you have.  However, I recently restored my computer from Mavericks back to Snow Leopard using my WD mybook.  At first I was unable to use the WD mybook for restore, as is was not recognized by the computer after the menu came up from pressing "command R" during start up.  I attributed this to the WD software requiring a password to access the drive.  This is the same password that you (anyone who owns a WD mybook) have to supply each time you want to use time machine to back up files.  There is a simple remedy I found.  You need to go to your applcations and select "WD SmartWare," type in your password, then select the "Settings" tab at the upper right hand conner.  Then select "Set up drive."  On the right side of the window there is the "Set Security Options," sign in using your password in the box displayed under "password," then select "Remove Security."  The last step would be to save the security setting, and you are all set to use your WD mybook without a password for full system restoration.  So when you restart your computer and hold (or as I found press many times) the "command R" to access the restore window at start up, you can select restore from time machine, and have your WD mybook now appear in the timemachine device window, as the device is not password protected anymore.  Once your computer is restored you can follow the same steps outlined above to reinstate your password for your WD mybook.  Best of luck,
    Marc

  • How do I determine what version of Firefox I have and where do I go for updates/

Yahoo is 'suggesting' I upgrade to Firefox''' 8'''. How do I determine which version I currently have (there is not 'Internet Options' under Tools) and where to I go to find the updates withough depending on Yahoo?

    Hey kkwebb,
There is a KB article called [[Updating Firefox]] that should have all the info you are looking for. You can find out what version of FF you are currently using by going to the Help menu at the top left of Firefox, then choosing "About Firefox." That will not only tell you what version you are using, but it will also let you know if there is an available upgrade.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • How do I determine what Mac OSX I have?

I downloaded the new firefox....it says my system will not support it BUT I cannot get the old firefox back and have lost the ability to use my old firefox.
I do not know how to determine what Mac OSX I have.....
I really want my old firefox back with all my bookmarks, tabs, etc.
    Please help.

Another option to consider is to install the last Firefox 10.0.x ESR version as that version is more recent than the Firefox 16.0.2 version.

  • 6500 slide appears to have died

I'm absolutely devastated! My trusty old 6500 slide appears to be dead.
When I switch it on, it's like it's trying to boot up but then the screen sort of pixelates and then goes white then it switches off.
Does it sound like it's beyond repair?
    Any advice greatfully received.
    Thanks

    How old is it.. ??

Google search dead Time Capsule.. you will be dismayed at the number of people.. !!
Just to show even apple discussions has seen plenty of posts about the issue.. these are the two most active threads.. but there are literally hundreds of threads.

  • OS X MAVERICKS 10.9.1, Late 2013 iMac i7 and Western Digital 4TB  My Book Live Duo External Drive

How do I properly configure the external hard drive and Time Machine (TM) to be sure that TM backup are performed properly and the backups can be used to either restore my iMac fully or certain files can be restored in the future, if required.
I would like to know the drivers and software I need to install on the iMac to support the external hard drive, step by step instructions for correctly setting up the external drive would be useful.  Should I use the external drive as RAID 0 ( the drive is actually two-2TB drives in a case), or use its 4TB capacity without RAID?
Additionally, is there a way to test the restoration of files from the external drive to the iMac.  I do not want to render the iMac to an unusable state.

Be aware that Western Digital drives have had issues with Mavericks. http://wd-mavericks-data-loss.com/#!
I would format using Apple's Disk Utility rather than the drive software.

  • My MacBook appears to have died - and yet is showing signs of life.

    Hi there.
My MacBook Pro can only start up with the grey Apple and the spinning clock symbol. But there are hints that the hard drive is still alive. I will probably buy a new hard drive and back up from TimeCapsule, but I would love to get the data off it. Any help appreciated. The story so far...
It has had problems connected with Ethernet and backing up to TimeCapsule, which was only solvable by trashing Prefs and Cache on the hard drive. I lived with this for a long time.
But yesterday, iTunes library became corrupted, so I decided to restart.
When I put in my password, it accepted it then asked for it again, and again, and again.
So I connected an external drive with Leopard on it and used Disk Utility.
It corrected all permissions and said the drive was fine (error message it corrected was (Group differs on "private/etc/cups" should be 0, group is 26).
The problem with the password didn't go away.
Changed password under Disk Utility, but still it asked for it again when I started up the laptop.
Decideed to reinstall Leopard (offered me Archive and install as the version on the MacBook is 10.5.4, compared to the older one on the external drive).
Instal failed and it then flashed between an Apple and a No Entry sign (circle with a line through it).
    Things now not looking good!
Tried to re-install Leopard, this time it let me.
But now when I start up I get the grey Apple and the spinning clock (I left it all night, and it didn't change in this time).
Bizarely, using Disk Utilities still tells me that the Drive and Permissions are fine.
There are now only 3.2 GB on the MacBook, as installing Leopard took up most of the spare space.
Took it to a Mac repair place and it can be seen as an external drive, but nothing in the foders (even though the folder structre all seems to be there).
They tried DiskWarrior, which seemed to say that the drive was fine.
They told me to replace the Drive, but I'm hopeful that someone here could help.
Otherwise, I fly back to the UK from Ireland to buy a new drive, restore from TimeCapsule and fly back here.
Flights are cheap, but there must another way.
Thanks for your time - Nigel

I'm writing because I had a very similar case.
Late one night Safari started acting extremely slow and would give me the spinning color wheel [henceforth known and the spinny wheel of death]. I attempted to force quit Safari but with know luck. My computer was completely frozen. I forced a shut down by holding the power key and upon restart I got the Grey Screen of Death [kernel panic].
After a few kernel panics my computer showed signs of loading. It stayed at the grey load screen for nearly a half hour before I shut it off. Upon restart, my MBP would hit the grey load screen and then shut off immediately.
When I loaded my 10.5.1 discs and ran disk utilities, it said my drive was damaged. When I tried to repair it, it would freeze up on me. This happened a few times but it finally was "repaired." To be on the safe side I reformatted my HD but apparently there was a drive failure and 10.5 couldn't load.
I downgraded to my MBP system discs, reformatted, repaired, and installed with nearly as much hassle. Of course, at 10.4.3-x.11, I'd still get the spinny wheel of death, and all my music I'd try to play would pause, like if your old CD player ran out of skip protection.
I looked around the net and got answers for what could have caused the kernel panics. Apparently there are a few things, in my case, bad RAM chips or a failing HD.
I had my original RAM module and installed it but still got crap performance. When I called Apple Tech support, informed that I'm not ******** and they don't need to spell out every step for me and ran the laundry list of things I have done in hopes of repairing, the techie agreed that it's most likely my HD failing.
I just installed a new Seagate HD, twice the size and faster. Installing 10.5.1 and upgrading was problem free. My music (which I must re-rip onto my computer) is playing fantastically. I haven't received a kernel panic or one spinny wheel of death since.
In the end, there's a possibility that your hard drive has gone bad. Maybe a head, maybe a platter. I'm cursing losing all of my music and photos but considered it a sign of me finally upgrading my drive like I wanted to.

  • IBook appears to have died.

I put my iBook (14" G4 1.33Ghz 1.25Gb Ram Leopard) to sleep the other day and it hasn't worked since! It either won't boot up at all or if it does it freezes and comes up with the "You need to restart your computer.." message at random times, sometimes during starting up and sometimes while operating. I erased & reinstalled Leopard but no joy so reinstalled Tiger but still the same thing. It's guaranteed to crash if I try and turn on the Airport card however when I carried out the hardware test everything including the card came up clear. I've tried everything I know, resetting the Pram, power module etc but coming to the conclusion it's simply stuffed! Any ideas anyone?
    Ta
    Andrew

Hi subfish, Does it come up with the kernel panic message only when Airport is turned on? If so that is almost certainly your problem irrespective of the AHT report. When Apple upgraded the specs for the iBook there was a period during which Airport Extreme cards were fitted as standard (specced as 'Built-in' ). Later 'Built-In' models had Airport integral with the logic board. To verify, check underneath the keyboard. If yours is visible there remove it and see if the problem goes away.
Instructions to remove AX card Here.
Airport Extreme cards are still available, if not from Apple then through eBay and elsewhere.
If your Airport is truly 'Built-In', i.e. into the logic board, then you'll have to leave AX switched off and connect via Ethernet cable or wi-fi dongle. I'm afraid I have no recommendations re these, I know that they were problematic with Macs but may have improved.
    Good luck and post back,
    Adrian
