That's usually caused by a conflict between iTunes and the Bytemobile LSP inserted by the AT&T communication manager, as per the following document:

If you're really using iTunes 7.0 you are very far behind the current version - maybe it is trying to connect to a decomissioned server. In fact I am kind of surprised it will run on a Macbook Air. Are you sure you are running iTunes 7?

How to De-authorize an older PC running Windows 2000 PC with iTunes 7? My itunes will not connect with the iTunes store to all the deauth request.
The "Deauthorize All" command is only available if iTunes thinks you are currently using 5 authorizations.
Otherwise, you can only deauthorize the old computer by using "Deauthorize this computer" from the computer itself.
If the old computer is no longer operable, you can't deauthorize it, but that is not a problem. -

I am experiencing this problem as well.
I have access to the internet and can download songs from the music store but iTunes is being its usual pain in the rear and says I do not have an internet connection when I try to download any updates.
This does not seem to be a firewall issue, at least as far as I can tell, as I have McAfee and both iTunes and iTunes Helper have Full Access in my firewall settings.

Seriously, You have told us absolutely nothing about the computer model, version of Mac OSX, version of iTunes, what you have installed recently, or anything else for that matter. -
When I launch iTunes on the PC, iTunes will not connect to Airplay speakers. Only after a new start of iTunes a connection is established.
Thank you for the suggestion, but the 'clean' install of iTunes (which I did twice) didn't do the trick.

I spoke with Apple Care, who was also stumped. They think it might be a hardware issue (but were probably just giving up on working with me because it was free service/I haven't paid the $50). You could try logging out of your account on the iPad by tapping on your id in Settings > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores if the iPad is on iOS 6) and then logging back in and see if that makes any difference.
If it doesn't fix it then you could try disconnecting from your network and reconnecting to it, and/or a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot. -
