My letter to Apple about their books...

Greetings.
I just received nine books that I ordered (#’s 434xxxxx and 434xxxxx) through Apple, and I thought I would share my thoughts and suggestions to Apple in regards to this.
A little about me: I am a professional photographer going on my twenty-eighth year in business. Most of my assignment work is through advertising and design firms that are rigid in their quest for color reproduction, and a person that is knowledgeable about printing and post production.
Overall, I am very pleased with the way my books came out. I ordered one 8 1/2x11 hard cover, and eight medium size (8x6) soft cover books. All the books were 56 pages, and produced form the same book “format”, which I believed was Contemporary. The only difference were the size and cover stock.
The color reproduction was what I was hoping for, and the turnaround time very acceptable. The ability to track the order when shipped was convenient.
I put the book together in IPhoto 6.0.6, and the process was very easy, as well as enjoyable.
I read many of the Apple IPhoto forums pertaining to book production, and even asked some of my own questions. All of this made for a great experience producing my “book” in a quantity and style that I wanted. I am anxious to send another book in for printing, and will probably upgrade to the latest version of ILife so I am current on my Apple applications.
I would like to offer a few thoughts to you. Some of them have been addressed in the forums, but I feel that they are worth repeating.
1) While I am pleased with the quality of the books that I ordered, I felt that the price per book is quite high. Just one of my medium size books was about $30.00 US. And the same book in hardcover was close to $80.00 US. I have not had a real chance to compare prices with other print on demand, (POD) services, I feel I might take a closer look. I am aware that I could have made a smaller book, or use less pages, but I did not want to compromise. I am also aware that printing a short run of anything is a costly convenience. Had I wanted to print a thousand of these books, there would be more options.
I think I speak for others when I say that I would be more inclined to produce more books if it just was not so cost prohibitive. An interesting question that I have: IF Apple charged half of what they charge now for a book, would the increase in book volume more than make up for the price cut? (Providing Apple markets this discount in some way.)
This leads me to:
2) Some sort of discount for ordering two or more books. I know that once a press is set up and running, the first book is the most expensive, but after that, it is just ink, paper, and assembly. The eight books that I ordered, again very nice, cost $246.00US. I would have ordered many more copies, for gifts, etc., if they were not $30.00 for each book. maybe something like $30.00 for the first thru third book, and then $15.00 for the 4th to tenth. Just add a price break for quantity.
3) Set up a “shopping cart” system that allows combined orders to be shipped in one box. This would save customers some money. I did notice, that the hardcover book came from Minnesota, but the soft cover ones came from Oregon. If a customer orders multiple books in different sizes, there should really only be one shipping charge in my opinion. Not a penalty because printing is done at two or more locations.
3) Have a way for customers to contact Apple by telephone for some answers, in addition to e-mail support. Like other Apple support, this option could be a pay-per-call situation and a last resort if one can’t find answers they are looking for on the forums, or web.
4) Enable some option that lets the book creator turn off the Apple logo and “Made on a Mac”. I am proud that I did my work on a Mac, but the logo and symbol are intrusive and I’d rather have nothing printed that says Apple. This is MY book(s). I’ve read some very creative, and somewhat complex, ways to over ride this in the forums, but this should be a simple task, and up to each individual whether or not to include this. I’m not familiar with the latest version of IPhoto (7?), but I hope that this option is available in that.
Again, I really enjoyed putting my book together and I’m happy with the results. Ten years ago, this might have been unimaginable. I’d just like to share those results with lots more people if the price of the books were more fair. Far more interesting than sending your mom a card for the holidays.
I hope that you consider these ideas, and if you have any comments or questions for me, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Thank you.
Jonathan Levin

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • An Open Letter to Apple About Bug-Ridden Logic Pro 7.1.1

The bile rises in my throat as I write this, as it has all day struggling with the innumerable bugs in Logic. That's right, not pilot error, but de facto B U G S. Dangerous bugs.
Today's tale is about 2/4 measures. In the score I'm writing I have a 2/4 measure. Big deal, right? Problem is, I've had to re-insert this ******* 2/4 measure about 4 dozen times today, because every time I undo an edit -- one that occurs many editing-steps after I inserted the 2/4 time signature -- the time signature disappears. Oh yes, and this signature can't be retrieved with undo/redo.
This bug is akin to the one I reported previously where, after inserting numerous markers one after the other, and then undoing the next edit, all of the markers disappear (and can't be retrieved with undo/redo).
Sound familiar? See a pattern forming?
Two days ago I was working on a record for a high-profile artist. The question arose as to why, at one point in the track, the click's loud downbeat click was playing on the 3 and the soft clicks on 1, 2, and 4. The answer? Same bug! There was a 2/4 measure in that piece too, and when I undid an edit, the 2/4 measure disappeared. You want to talk about embarrassing? Want to talk about time-wasting effort?
How wonderful for us professional Logic users that my "For Apple Employees Only" thread -- which asked that someone from Apple/Logic respond to the various problems that people were posting here -- was locked. Talk about the exactly wrong response from Apple/Logic. Couldn't be more wrong in your approach if you tried harder.
So, Apple/Logic. What are you going to do about the plethora of other bugs that riddle this otherwise grand program? What are you going to do about your severe lack-of-communication problem? After spending $1K on your software, we deserve to know.

William. Sorry to hear about your troubles. At times I've been tempted at times to go back to 4.8.1! In fact I'm going to be doing just that when I do a live TV performance next week where the artist I'm working with is performing live to a few sequenced tracks.
I can imagine the difficulties that programmers may have to face in fixing bugs in a complex program such as Logic, but it's a situation that doesn't elicit my empathy for them. That's their job.
I guess I could sum it up in the form of a quasi-parable: a composer gets a gig to write a score in the style of Bach, but he's much more well-versed with Schoenberg. Despite the composer's assurances that he can do the job, the music ends up sounding like some strange hybrid of the two. It would be quite understandable if the client were upset because he was promised an authentic-sounding, baroque score. No one feels bad for the composer, because he took a job that he wasn't qualified to do, and ultimately didn't deliver what he promised.
Similarly, I feel hoodwinked by the promise of satisfaction implicit in the notion of purchasing the best that Apple has to offer, i.e., the most powerful computer (which my dp G5 was at the time), lastet OS, and expensive software published under Apple's aegis.
I agree with you that there's incompetence and irresponsibility at play here. To the latter point, any decent beta tester would have discovered some of the more basic bugs in Logic 7.1.1. And here we are, vis a vis this forum, essentially publically beta-testing Logic's latest offering with zero feedback from the company, despite the fact that our respective problems are absolutely tangible.
To the former point, I'm wondering if it's the programmers themselves who are not up to the task here, if it's management that have fallen asleep at the wheel, or some combination of the two.
I've learned that as of last year a fellow named Bob Hunt was the product manager for Logic. If he's still currently the PM, and the feedback and problem-related posts here haven't been enough to prompt him (or someone in an official capacity) to publically address our respective issues, then I'd venture to guess that there's a problem somewhere at the top.

  • Who can I complain to at Apple about their carrier AT&T?

I'm having trouble with data coverage in the United States thru AT&T with my iPhone. The iPhone itself is working perfectly. The applications are awesome. But it's not worth anything if AT&T does not have data coverage. True, they can't be everywhere, but I'm find it alarming how many holes there are in the coverage of the United States and how large these hole are.

Apple has chosen to use AT&T as there sole carrier. If they would just open it up then there would be a chance for me to switch carriers. On the other hand, I still can believe that AT&T is doing the best that it can at this time. But opening up the competition might help.
Why would I complain to Motorola, etc?

  • How can I inform apple about my stolen Mac Book Pro?

I want to inform apple about my stolen Macbook Pro so that if they try to register it we can trace the computer. But apparently there is no reporting system. Is there another solution, an adress to  write an e-mail?

... well you answered your own queston. there is no reporting system..Apple doesn't track stolen equipment.. perhaps you bought Lojackforlaptops or turned on Find my Mac.. if you are at a college, you might want to ask your IT department if they can look for your IT via Mac's "MAC" address if you know it.

  • Is there a way to contact apple about terrible service at one of their stores?

I recently spent 3 different days and over 4 hours at an apple store in order to swap a defective product.  I was hoping to contact apple in some form to complain about how awful the customer service was at that particular store.  I have a lot of apple products and enjoy the often spectacular customer service.  However, I want to voice my displeasure about this particular store.  I was wondering how I would be able to contact apple about the store.

If you call AppleCare, they can log a complaint about any aspect of Apple's Business in the system for review by senior management. If you log a complaint about service provided at an Apple Retail Store, it will be reviewed by AppleCare Senior Management and forwarded to the appropriate area or regional manager for review... or so I have been told!

  • Open letter to Apple and MPAA

An Open Letter to Apple and the MPAA
I have been an “Apple fanboy” since 1989 when my father first brought home a Mac IIx.  I’ve also always believed in paying for things you consume.  An addendum to that is I also believe that those you buy from should be honest and treat their paying customers like they want repeat business.
The Apple TV and the “airplay” feature has caused me more pain than it is worth.  In many instances it has failed me to a level that makes me want to never watch a movie again.  I buy every single piece of music or video I watch, and yet the MPAA and Apple continues to treat me like a pirate.  I ask, why should I not just become a pirate?
I work at a great job.  My time is worth $60/ an hour.  So when I waste an hour trying to airplay movies from my iPod Touch to my Apple TV in an internet outage only to find out Apple assumes I am a thief and says my previously authorized Apple TV is “not authorized,” it is frustrating to the highest degree.  You cost me 60 dollars in time because you are worried about someone stealing $10?  In every day life, that is called a horrible human being.
I expect my media to work on VHS standards.  By that I mean, I should be able to pack up my Apple TV and my iPod, go to a friends house that doesn’t have internet, and be able to play on their TV.  If you cannot deliver that to me, you are a waste of my time and I will seek entertainment elsewhere.  It makes me extremely upset that I bought the movies thinking it would work in these situations.  Instead, I am fumbling with the remote and others are laughing that Apple isn’t so great.   It won't even let me stream a DVD from my iMac in an internet outage!
It is bad business to tick off your paying customers because you are worried about poor people that can’t afford $10-20.  To me, the convenience of buying from iTunes was well worth the money in time savings.  I don’t have to worry about backup and can download anywhere.  That is far more valuable than pirating. Yet, you still restrict what I can do.  That type of business mentality deserves to be punished harshly.  I now understand why people pirate, and hope they pirate to the extent that you all lose your jobs and the movie industry is no more.  Video games are better anyway, and that industry (except EA) knows how to treat its paying customers.
My only beef with Apple is not explicitly saying this when I purchased.  I assumed it worked like a physical copy in that I can play it where and when I want.  Apple, I love what you guys stand for and place great trust in you to fight these big media companies that want to deliver as little as possible for as much as possible.  Until you fix the movie streaming, I am not going to buy any movies on iTunes.

Hi were you able to resolve yours?
I was very worried losing all my medical stuff on my iPad Air 2, plus i have nothing to use for the next day! So i have to try all the possible things i read on the internet!! And this worked on my part (Thank God, and thank you Google)
    Perform a hard reboot
Hold down the Home button and Power button on your iPhone or iPad and keep holding them until you see the Apple logo. Once you do, you can let go. When your device boots back up, go ahead and check to see if the apps have started re-downloading. If they still appear to be stuck, continue on.

  • Why apple thinks their old customers are "Mad" or "Enemy" ?

Why apple thinks their old customers are "Mad" or "Enemy" ?
We are iPhone 4 user and we also paid money to apple ! But we are neglected by apple. No 3D view for iPhone 4 users.
What apple thinks, we are freak ?

I take your point, however there are number of Apple employees who are involved in discussions on this website. Furthermore Apple is missing a big trick if they are not review their own forums (let alone other forums) to get feedback on their products.
Apple has also made a big deal about the partnerships that it sets up with other companies (Google and Yahoo being amongst them). I do not think it is fair to pass the blame on to Yahoo. It is Apple's responsibility to ensure that the functions of its own products work. If Yahoo is letting them down they should be in discussion with Yahoo to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.

  • I called Apple about the 20" iMac display problem today...

I have the same display problem that I've been reading about here, it's much much brighter on the bottom of my screen than on the top and viewing the screen from an angle makes the screen look very dusty and dirty.
First I talked to technical support and because I live 75 miles from an Apple store, he said a technician would come and look at it tomorrow even though I said it was a problem that is very common and just not on my computer. It will be interesting to see what the technician says.
Then I called customer relations to put in a formal complaint against the 20" iMac screens. I told the man that even on the Apple support forums here that everyone was complaining about it. He said everyone where he worked was using 20" iMacs and as he looked at the screens next to him, he noticed that the colors were all off, looking dirty brown like mine. He said that's just how the new 20" screens were. I tried my best to tell him that it just wasn't right that the screens were so flawed and, although he kind enough and understanding, he didn't see any big problem with them.
He did submit my formal complaint at the end but I have to tell you all, it sure looks like Apple does not see any problem with these screens. He suggested that I write to Apple at their corporate office to let them know of these problems. Here is that address:
    Apple
    1 Infinite Loop
    Cupertino, CA 95014
So that's my next step, writing to the corporate office.
I'll update this post after the technician comes tomorrow. I really don't expect this to be fixed but I shall let everyone know.
    Martha

I have been watching this forum for months and have come to a conclusion that Apple
has taken the "easy road" by using cheaper components as evidenced by these discussions pertaining to cheap lcd computer screens. Also, with the Imac there is limited upgrade paths and the fact now
the imac has become more of a glorified computer with the internals of a laptop which suggests it is almost mandatory to pay extra for apple care for 3 year warranty because of uncertainty for longevity in my opinion. I am still using an apple 2002 quicksilver G-4 computer almost 6 years old that has not given me and problem. I have also been able to upgrade the hard drive, dvd rom drive myself-you cannot readily do with the current imacs. I was thinking about replacing my G-4 with an Imac, but have now come to the conclusion that Apple is losing focus with providing quality products and unless something drastic happens which I doubt, Apple will lose me as a future customer. I may be forced to go to the other side and buy a PC.

  • HT203167 I had 25 tv shows in my itunes library, and 3 movies. Now there all gone, I can access them thru the store but I dont want to download all over again. There was like 50 gb of video. What do I do, Its impossable to contanct apple about it.

I had almost 30 different seasons of tv shows in my library, alot. Now there all gone, my library is blank. My purchases are in my purchasd section on the store but I dont have enough space to download them all over again. I cant figure out what happend to them. I just watched one, then turnd my pc off, and later that day they were gone. And its IMPOSSABLE to contact apple about it, I dont know why its so hard to ask them any kind of question... Please help..

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The Apple TV 2 will play all the content in your iTunes library that your Apple TV 1 does. It can no longer sync any of it but can stream it all just as the older model did. Airplay is a different feature that lets you stream from an iPad/iPhone, the Apple TV 2 has Airplay the first didn't.
You can still sort and search content by genre, it still marks content watched and unwatched and mainly still lets you organise much as the Apple TV 1 did, with one exception. It doesn't do nested folders, so the ability to tag a movie as a show (ie James Bond) and have all the associated movies in a James bond folder has gone and it lists all these movies individually.
It has a similar situation with TV shows. It will put all TV shows in a series in a folder as the older one did, but the new one lists each series separately whereas the older model would put all the series in one folder.
Not nesting folders is a bit of a pain with large libraries and whilst I don't like it, it's more or less the only compromise I have to make and of course I get additional features too.

  • I bought about 4 books at once on amazon for my iPad kindle and then realise that I'm not getting round to reading any of them.  I've gone into two books but two I haven't.  Is there a way of reversing the order and getting my money back?

Hi I bought too many books at once through amazon for my iPad kindle.  Havent read any of them and Two I haven't actually gone in to, they have a banner across front which says 'new'is there a way of reversing the transaction either with amazon kindle or the iPad kindle application so I cane my money back?

You should ask Amazon about their returns policy or check the Amazon website. As that's who you bought them from they would be the best people to answer.

  • Is there any way to get in direct contact with apple about a problem I am having?

When I create text boxes in Preview and then save and close the file, they will be rotated 90 degrees when I reopen the file. This makes them virtually unreadable. It happens with some pdfs but not others. I am sure it must be a bug with preview and would really like to tell Apple about it so they can fix it. I posted this problem a few weeks ago and it seems a lot of people viewed it but I only got one reply (the person said they are not having the same problem).
Is there any way to email apple directly about it? Or a better way to go about this?
    Thanks!

If you believe it's a bug and you wish to just let them know about it, use the Feedback page Network 23 provided below. You will not get an answer to any feedback you send.
If you want direct assistance from an Apple support technician, then you will have to call them and pay the support fee unless your system is within the one-year original warranty in which case you could purchase an AppleCare extended warranty plan under which you would get free phone support.
You may also get suggests from people here, at least confirmation that the problem is a bug or a refutation of it being a problem across all 10.7.4 systems. You might also update to 10.7.5, if you haven't already, and see if the problem persists. Try the Combo updater; even though it's not necessary for a .1 incremental update, often use of the Combo updater fixes problems that the incremental update does not.
    Regards.

I am planning to buy apple air mac book. i am not that technical will i be able to handle apple mac book. i am aware of using windows os but can i get software like that of notepad, word pad in os X lion. can i get partitioning in macbook,

Yes.  Switching to Mac might be overwhelming at first, but it is not difficult.  I Just started using Macs regularly about 9 months ago after using only Windows based pc's for over 15 years.  Macs come with TextEdit , but you can also purchase MS Office for Mac or use Apple's version, called iWork.Yes, you can partition the hard drive of a Mac.  Read these also: http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/, http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/.  With regular use of a Mac, you will be able to use it without even thinking about it, just like how you learned to use a WIndows pc.

  • Importing Netscape's address book into Apple's Address Book application

I want to import my email Netscape email address book into Apple's Address Book application. So I open the Address Book application and select import from the pull down menu. That brings up three choices, vCards, LDIF and Text. I previously had saved my Netscape address book as a pdf file. So I selected, Text. A window appeared from which I was to select where I wanted to get the file from. I made selections until I got to where my pdf file was and selected it. But I got the following error message.
The file you selected does not appear to be a valid comma separated values (csv) file nor a valid tab delimited file, please choose another file.
So I tried again and this time I selected LDIF, but when the file in my Netscape Users Profile that would appear to be my address book came up, it was “greyed out” and I could not select it. The file had the name “abook.mab”. It is not an LDIF file. There are no LDIF files in my profile.
So I tried selecting vCards, but I got the exact same results as above. The file that looks like it is my address book, is grayed out and cannot be selected.
So I went into Netscape to see if I could export my address book into Apple’s Address Book. I chose export from the Netscape menu and a window opened asking me to select where I wanted to export the file to. But when I got to Apple’s Address Book application, it was greyed out and could not be selected. The same thing happened when I tried to select Apple’s Mail program.
I have about three hundred email addresses in my Netscape address book. If these addresses have to be manually entered into Apple's Address Book, I will not make the switch to Apple's Mail program.

Netscape's Address Book window does not have that option. The Export option is under the Tools menu, but does not give you any options in the Tools menu. Once you select Export, the Export Address Book window opens. This window does have a format option where you can select either LDIF, Comma Separated or Tab Delimited. But it doesn't matter which of those I select, Apple's Address Book and Mail applications are not available for selection.
