My Macbook pro won't get passed the grey startup screen

My apple macbook pro is not getting passed the gray screen with the apple and spinning circle. I have tried pressing comand-R or shift-command-v, and nothing happens what so ever. I listened to my hard drive, and it sounds fine. It sounds like it is running, and there is no clicking sounds from it or anything, and haven't been any at all. Nothing seems to make it respond

    Hey hope someone can help.
    Okay so last night I was using Windows, I shut down, then a few hours later I switched it on to go onto my Mac, but it took forever, I left it though and eventually I got to the log in screen, I entered my password and it was loading then the screen went blue/gray (not sure I think both) and went back into the log in screen again... I did this numerous times before giving up and shutting down. Went to sleep, woke up and resumed this...so I decided to see if I could log into my windows, which it did just fine, I'm on windows typing this right now.
    I have run the apple hardware test, extended too, and I have recieved the error code: 4SNS/1/40000000:Th2H-63.000 (No idea what that is)
    I have also tried booting from my start up disk that came with my Mac. It gives me the Apple logo on the gray screen then ejects my disc, gives me this long story... kind of goes: panic (cpu 0 caller 0x00431da3):"unable to blah blah... Tells me to restart or shutdown.
    I looked at my disc and I think its cracked, So I have to get that replaced.
    I think I have to archive and install, I really don't want to lose my music, as I haven't backed it up. 400 songs or so nothing much, I'm not worried about the other stuff as that is all backed up.
    Long story short can someone tell me what's going on with my Mac? why am I still able to use windows fine? Has windows done a hit on Mac OS? lol. Is the solution to replace my install disc at Apple? I really don't know, any help would be greatly appreciated thanks, I'm just too tired and can't Google anymore :P

    Neither do I. Suggest that you take your MBP to an Apple Store or an AASP.

    Yes. You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support for a nominal S&H fee. *You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.*

    Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
    There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.

    Step 4
    If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.

    If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
    Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
    If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.

If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
    If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.

    If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.  
    Step 10
    Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
    Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
    This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
    If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Mac Mini won't get past the apple startup screen

    Hi,
    Just returned from the long weekend and tried to boot up my mac mini. It seems it doesn't want to get past the apple startup screen and the icon on the bottom just keeps spinning.

    It explains that you must install Snow Leopard to an external drive or LARGE USB Thumb drive, at least 16GBs in size, and then boot the system from that external media and run disk utilities from there on the internal drive.
    So if you have a LARGE USB thumb drive or a external hard drive you can continue this to see if the internal hard drive has failed. If not you could buy one tomorrow or take the system into a Apple repair center.

  • MacBook Pro won't get past the flashing grey file screen?

    Ok, so tonight I try turning my MacBook on as normal, it then froze and I saw the rotating umbrella appear. So I restarted it. When trying to turn back on, the system did not load, instead a flashing grey file shape came up with a question mark inside. I have tried restarting with a number of key combinations, Option; option, ALT, P, R. Everything, yet it's not getting past this screen. Whenever I try to do an Internet recovery, it just stays on the wifi selection screen and I select mine, enter the password and then it just goes back onto the selection screen. Nothing is work yet! Incredibly annoyed as it has so much stuff, photos, music everything. I don't even know how I reinstall software as it's stuck... Can someone please help? My software is 10.7 I believe.

  • I upgraded to lion and now my 2009 MacBook pro won't boot after the grey page.

    Hi,
    I just upgraded to lion, my computer restarted, and I was able to use it for quite some time with the new software.  It was upgrading the display pad software and when it finished required a reboot, which it did.  Upon restarting my Mac is now stuck on the grey screen which is supposed to show login info and a place to type in your password, but it doesn't.  All I see is grey.
    I'm currently reinstalling lion, so hopefully that will help.  Any suggestions? I want my computer back!

    The Safari download page specifically says the version is for Snow Leopard, and only offers this version, and when I try to install it, the routine gets blocked complaining that it needs Snow Leopard.
    I also tried to simply remove the app in order to use Software Update. But this is blocked as well.

  • A1226 won't get past the grey loading screen

    I just purchased a macbook pro model A1226 from a friend who said it wont load up OSX. I figured it was just a hard drive replacement and wouldnt be a big deal, but I swapped the hard drive out for another and it still wont load. I went to put his back in. He said it had Lion on it, but when I held the option key down to go to the recovery drive, the regular startup drive says leopard.... so, not sure what i'm working with. I've tried to look on here and find different options to use at startup. I have my old snow leopard family pack install disks, but everytime I try to boot to the disk it trys to then gives me a "you need to restart your mac" prompt. I've tried resetting the pram , I've tried to get to this ever so elusive apple hardware test by pressing d prior to startup etc. and i'm at a loss. Please help. Thanks.

    Boot holding down the OPT key.  That will start the boot manager and you can see what your options are.

    Okay well, to start off, I got my MacBook from a distant family member who got a new one so they let me have their old one. They got it from a pawn shop so I don't have the disk that we got the OS from but it hasn't had any issues UNTIL NOW. I need to use my laptop for a homework assignment so please help me quickly. Everytime I turn it on it'll just stay on the loading screen, I left it for 4 hours yesterday and it still wouldn't work. I reset the (insert acronym here) thing already, the thing where you press control, option, P, R keys at start up. I really need help because my assignment is on the laptop and it's due tomorrow. Please help. ={ And I'm not entirely sure which OS it's using because I've never really checked.

    Boot from the OS DVD you have for the computer.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    You can reinstall OS X, but the procedure depends on the version of OS X that is installed.

  • It won't get past the grey start screen.

    I had a new logic board put in last year. Now it seems like it running hot fan spinning and just sits on start screen before you see the logo. Any ideas on what to do. I cooled it off. Unplugged it. Removed the battery and still same result.

    I'm having the same problem everynow and then... I'm running mac osx lion. I have reinstalled lion to see if that will work. now it is starting again but not sure for how long. The problem is that I'm getting small interruptions while running itunes or a movie... it's a like a second cut every minute or so... strange. Never had any problems before.
    If it keeps on behaving weird I'll do a clean install.
    I suggest you run disk utility and AHT (apple hardware test) before you do anything, AHT should be in the CD you got when you purchased your machine and the disk utility should be initiated by holding option while booting (chose recovery HD if you're running lion). Hope that helps.

        MacBook pro won't load pass the grey start up screen?

    Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.   
    There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
    Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 3
    If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 4
    Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 5
    Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 5.
    If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
    If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 6
    Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
    This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 7
    Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 8
    Repeat Step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 9
    This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a boot failure. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 10
    If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. If you can't get to an Apple Store, go to another authorized service provider.
