My Valetplus M20 router cuts speed near in half?!?

I did a test to check the speed of my connection with my PS3. First I checked the speed straight from my internet providers modem and I get 18.9 Mbps. Then checked it through the Valetplus router and the speed results are 8.5 Mbps. Both tests were wired in with same cable. Can anyone explain why this happens and if that is common with wifi routers? Thank you.

First thing to consider about this is the firmware of the router. If there is a new firmware available then proceed with the upgrade and reset the router afterwards. Next thing to consider is the link/card speed that the computer gets when the computer will be connected to the modem and the router. If there is no discrepancy with the link speed but there is a discrepancy with the actual internet speed; then there’s a possibility that there might be something wrong with the router. Just upgraded my Mini to 10.4 and saw an immediate negative impact on import speed in iTunes. What was average 8.0-10.0X import speed has dropped to 5.0-8.0X average. iTunes import speed is reliant on both RAM and processor speed. Tiger has a host of applications that run in the background called Widgets. Starting with 10.4.2 you could manage your own widgets with Apple's Manage Widgets button on Dashboard. Try disabling all widgets and see if it makes a difference.

Also if Spotlight hasn't finished indexing, that could slow down other system processes. Check the Spotlight menu (the blue circle with the white magnifying glass in the upper right corner) to see if there is just a search field, or a search field with the words saying that it is indexing. If the latter, wait until it is finished.

IP address conflict - Personal Router ValetPlus M20

We are having a regular IP address conflict with our Cisco ValetPlus M20 router that causes one portable computer to not be able to access the internet and we reboot the router - I am looking for a permanent solution to this problem - not the temporary solution of renewing the IP address as is recommended on most message boards that I've found online - why would the router/network have such a problem? Does something need to be set? Does the router need to be configured? It seems that the router should be able to allocate IP addresses for all computers on the network - which include two portable computers, one desktop, and 2 ipads. But only one portable computer running windows 7 experiences the conflict, has the problem. Could it be software on that computer or malware causing the problem?

One computer losing connection may be due to any of the following causes: wireless interference, intermittent wireless signal, or limits on the number of devices that are allowed to connect to the wireless network (router). If the computer is wired to the router, there's a possibility of an adapter problem. For wireless interference and intermittent signals, try changing the router wireless channel to either 1, 6, 9, or 11. Relocating the router should provide you a better signal coverage. If the IP address conflict error message still persists, set the wireless clients to automatic DHCP configuration or enable DHCP Reservation instead of using static IP.

Does having two networks on the same router cut the speed of each network?

I have successfully been using a FiOS and Time Capsule network for over two years. When I had it installed the FiOS service man set up a network without the Apple Time Capsule. I later set up an additional network that included the Time Capsule. My first question is, does that mean I have cut the speed potential in half? If so, can I safely delete the unsused network?

Should connecting to a router affect speed of Internet connection?

I have a Netgear router and I have connected it to two MacBook Airs that I have.
I have cable internet, a line that comes out from the wall, and which I stick into the computer using the USB ethernet dongle.
But now that I am using a router, I connect the cable line into the router and use the ports to connect to the computers.
My question is:
What is the correct IP address that should be showing?
Network System Preferences show:
Status: Connected
USB ethernet is currently active and has the IP address 192:168.x.xx
The usual IP address (when I am not using a router) is usually 185.xxx.x.xx.
Is this OK, that it's showing the routher IP address?
The reason why I am asking is that the internet speeds seem to be slower when I am on the router.
It might just be my imagination and also because I am checking the speed a lot more than usual.
Should connecting a router affect the speed of the internet?
The router's maximum speed is 300 mbps and the cable internet's speed is 100 mbps.
I have noticed that the speed of the internet with the router is very variable: about 12 - 80 mbps.
Should I not worry?
I know that the internet speed with cable internet can fluctuate a lot more than with DSL.

I am connected to the router by LAN cables. I am not using wireless. I am using cable modem.
The cable from the wall goes to the router into the WAN port. Ethernet cables go from the router's LAN ports and to the two computers.
When I wasn't using the router, the speed of the cable internet could go as high as 100, occasionally as high as 200 (100 was the advertised speed of the cable internet).
Now, with the router, it's around 30. But I have gone as high as 80 while I have been testing with the router connected.
I think I am worrying for nothing, but I just want to know generally --- does a router affect the speed (assuming it's a router that can handle maximum speeds of the cable modem and that it's connected correctly, etc)?
I read that cable speed can depend on how many people are using it at the same time in that area and that sort of thing. I know the cable speed does vary a lot. But usually it's good during the daytime, about 90 mbps.

WRT54GX4 - variable router DL speeds

I think this problem has been going on for months, but it really only became noticeable when I started using Xbox Live. Basically, I have a WRT54gx4 (with the latest firmware, 1.00.20 I believe) with UPnP enabled, all xbox live ports forwarded; wireless MAC address ID filter.
The problem occurs like this - my wireless router DL speeds may be approximately close to my wired modem speeds (~ 5 Mbps) (Note: the upload speeds are always fine) for a couple of days (~4-5) on all my computers on my wireless network, and then for some odd reason will crash to subpar speeds 1 Mbps for all my computers and I'm pretty sure the Xbox as well (which uses the Microsoft adapter).
The effects are most noted when online gaming as playing with a 1 Mbps connection is challenging if not impossible. This 1 Mbps connection will remain constant for ~2-3 days (despite restarting the router) before returning back to 5 Mbps. During all this time, my wired modem connection is fine, meaning my ISP is fine.
I'm pretty sure this problem has existed prior to getting Xbox Live, as I have noticed slow periods of internet, but I never bothered to investigate it until now. I am also aware of the P2P programs and I'm pretty sure this is not the issue in this case.
Any help / information would be appreciated.

Hey Gollum, I've already mentioned that my router's firmware is the latest (1.00.20 on the Linksys product website). Reducing the MTU won't be possible, as XBox Live no longer works at 1350

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
    •    Launch Settings app

    •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

My personal opinion is that it is a problem from some books that have been published via Smashwords. That has been my experience for one or two books I've downloaded. I contacted the author in one case and he replied:
"Just to let you know I've had some feedback from Smashwords about the odd display issue. It's relates to the line spacing in the original document, apparently. I'll be uploading a fixed version to them in the near future, though it might take a while for the new version to trickle down to the iBookstore."
So I dunno if your book is published by Smashwords, but if it is it may be worth contacting author?

Use the rectangular marquee tool to select half the image, then Layer>New Layer via cut. You can turn on the rulers and set a guide so you'll know the boundaries you want if you need it to be exactly half.
If you want to also be able to move the other half, before you start double click the background layer in the layers panel to turn it to a regular layer.

That's fine. Everybody has their own preferences. I find it odd that you feel the need to criticize mine. Personally, I've been a Prepress Tech for 25 years, the last 15 in a digital environment on Mac Workstations. I work with live fonts and outlined text every day. I've had way more headaches with font substitution and reflow than I've ever had with vector art. Most of the time, I leave live text as live text. But if I'm designing a Logo or art that is intended to be placed in multiple documents and probably scaled, I'm going to convert it to paths. Much less chance of the RIP screwing it up that way.

But let me assure you, I don't need any schooling from you. The fact that you seem compelled to engage me on this may say something about your personality. Micro-manage much?

I am so fed up with Verizon !!! I go into stores, tell them the problem and they take my phone, do some things to my phone ad tell me it is fixed !! That is certainly a big IF. I always keep an eye out for pricing on Verizon's competitors, keeping in mind that if I choose to switch my service would suffer considerably.
With that in mind, I checked Sprint the other day to see how valid these claims of "cutting my bill in half" actually are. The first clue is the small print IMMEDIATELY underneath that statement of the following "Discount applies to base monthly service plan only. Exclusions apply and new plan features may not be an exact match.".
Needless to say, Sprint was not able to cut my 4 smartphone, 10 GB shared data $168/month Verizon bill down to $84. They didn't even come close.

When connecting wired my router straight from my internet provider I get speeds in the 90mps range. Now when connecting wired through my airport extreme I get speeds near 10mps. Also when using wireless for my ipad3 I recieve download speeds of .63mps.

When connecting, wired, to my router from my ISP I get speeds in the 90mbps range. Then when connecting, wired, to my Airport Extreme I get speeds of 10mbps. Wirelessly I get download speeds of 6mbps on my laptops and only 1mbs with my Ipad3. I am making sure only one device is sharing the network to make sure to get accurate results. Why are things so slow?

First, check with you ISP to see what speed they've promised. In my case, they indicated that the speed should be greater than 50 Mbps. If they say that it should be significantly higher than what your getting, then try the following if you're using Airport Utility v.6.:
1. Open the Airport Utility (Desktop: Command+Shift+U to open Utility Folder, select Airport Utility)
2. Click on the visual representation of the Airport Extreme and then select "Edit" (bottom right corner)
3. When the window opens (to a tab "Base Station"), click on the "Wireless" tab,
-it should have the following options: Network Mode, Wireless Network Name, Wireless Security, Wireless Password, Verify Password, a checkbox with "Enable Guest Network", and a button "Wireless Options..."]
4. Select "Wireless Options", which should open another window with the following options:
5Ghz network name, Country, a checkbox with "Create hidden Network", Radio Mode, 2.4 GHz Channel, and 5 GHz Channel [both of which can stay on "Automatic"]
5. Clicking on "Radio Mode" will bring up a list in which the las option should read:
802.11n only (5Ghz) - 802.11n only (2.4 GHz)
Once you click "Save", your router will blink amber for a little while and then it should work.
