Need to re-load music library -- How?

I had a disk problem that resulted in losing my iTunes library folder. Fortunately, all of my files were on an external drive, and are safe. However, when I launched iTunes, it had an empty library. In Preferences->Advanced->General, my iTunes Music folder is pointed at the external drive (it didn't change for some reason), but still none of my songs showed up.
Do I just need to drop all the files about into iTunes? Or is there a better way to rebuild the library?

OK the problem is that they way you had it set up is your media was on the external drive but your database file for iTunes was on the internal drive. So we can get your library back but not your ratings, playlists, playcounts, etc. Those stats are all stored in the database file.
So to add them back to your library, you can simply drag and drop the external drive folder of media onto your iTunes library, however this will then proceed to copy them all to the location specified by iTunes. So even if you designated the external, it might try to recopy them creating doubles on the drive which means you would need a huge external drive.
However if you are telling iTunes to use the same folder that they are already in and the folder structure was originally set up by iTunes, it may not recopy them if they are already named and located how iTunes wants it.
So to test, open iTunes, make sure you are pointing to the external drive for your library location. Now go to File -> Add to Library...
then navigate to the external drive and that folder. Go into one artist folder and pick one album folder. Allow iTunes to add the album. It should now show up in iTunes. What you need to do now is check and see if iTunes accepted the files as they were and didn't move or copy anything or if it created duplicates.
If it created duplicates, then we need to think of something else. If instead it was happy with the location and didn't create additional files, you can now do the same thing and add the entire folder to your library (you might want to first delete the one album we added making sure you say NO to moving it to the trash so when you add the whole folder and that one gets re-added, it won't be a duplicate).

  • Media Sync 3.0 Stuck on "Loading music library..."

The previous version of Media Sync worked OK for me. However, Media Sync 3.0 gets stuck when I open it on the "Loading music library..." message. It doesn't hard hang because the circle is still spinning, but nothing happens.
Also, when I go to the Preferred Music Library under Options and try to select iTunes instead of Windows Media player and click OK it does not save my change. If I go back to the menu Windows Media Player is still selected.
Occasionally when I connect my Storm Windows Vista is telling me there is a drive problem and asks me if I want to scan it for errors. I say yes, but it says the disk must be disconnected to do the scan. I'm not sure how I can scan it if its not connected.... but I'm also not sure if this is related to my Media Sync hang problem.
Has anyone experienced this issue? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

    Hi,
I checked my log file and I have a lot of "ID collision detected:" error messages. It also has the following exception reported:

Is there a way I can wipe just the music portion of my device and start over? Maybe the collisions is the problem...

I have recently downloaded logic from the app store and it can't locate quite a few of the sounds in the music library. How can I solve this problem? Thanks

Can you download large files from other places apart from the App store, wondering if it is the App store or your internet connection.
If it just the app store check this url http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact/

  • ITunes can't locate ⅔ of my Music Library -- How to repair?

I manually reorganized the iTunes Media Folder on my MacBook Air because everything was all jumbled up in the Music folder -- Songs, Movies, Mobile apps etc. everything all mixed up in Music folder. I manually dragged the Movie, iTunes U, Mobile Applications  etc.Folders out of Music Folder and put everything into iTunes Media Folder. The same order as it is on my desktop iMac. Now iTunes can't locate about 1/2 of my Music library. Everything else (movies, TV shows etc.) works fine, but iTunes lost the location of 1/2my music library. I get the message "The song "ABC" could not be used because the original file could not be located. Would you like to locate it"
Is there a way to reset iTunes so that it knows where all the songs are (they are all in the music folder which is in the iTunes Media Folder). If I have to locate every song individually it will take weeks.
File ->Library ->  Organize Library -> click Consolidate and Reorganize files in iTunes Media didn't seem to work. Isn't this the way to let iTunes know where all those songs it can't locate are?
Kindly advise if you know how to slove this.
    Thank you.
P.S. Still using Mountain Lion on this computer

I manage my music manually by turning off the advanced preferences for iTunes managing my music and copying it to the iTunes folder when adding it to the library.  Realize if you do this you are taking responsibility for keeping track of your music -- you will have to be organized.  If you want to move your library you will have to track down all the files. Your files will retain their original names and folder names and structure, so make sure it makes sense.  There's a few other disadvantages which I can't remember right now.  Even with manually managing you still occasionally get a broken link, and my experience is all with iTunes 7.5 which I still use.  I may be wrong but I suspect newer versions of iTunes are trying to do more at one time with all the store and cloud interface and may be more "delicate".
If you are downloading from Apple or ripping a CD, iTunes will put it in its normal folder structure anyway, though you can remove it from there.
The various scripts on the Dougscripts web site were written at different stages.  You have to read about iTunes version compatibility in the blurb about each script.  I don't see how you end up with multiple libraries using hte scripts.
The .itl file can reset itself but not with what you are doing.  If you had moved your whole library and broken all the links you could have found just one and iTunes might have offered to find the others based upon the same structure (not something it will do if you manually manage, by the way).

  • Need help backing up music library to disc image

Can anyone suggest an easy way to create a disc image of all my ITunes library and then compress it so it would be able to be burned to DVD? Or multiple DVD'S... or just put away safely in another external drive ...but just a lot smaller. There are so many choices in the process when I have taken a look at how to do it, that I just was overwhelmed. For example; formating, journaling etc. HELP!!

You could get SOME compression by creating a disk image of your iTunes Music folder. Launch Disk Utility (Apps > Utilities), then File > New > Image from Folder. Navigate to your iTunes Music folder, decide where you want to save it, choose "compressed" from the drop down, (and encrypt if you want, personally I wouldn't add that overhead just for music), then click Image. It will take some time, but at the end you will have a smaller music folder ready to be stored. I'm not sure you will see a DRAMATIC reduction, but you will see some.
(Don't worry about your iTunes Library database and iTunes Music Library.xml files, those don't take up too much room and can be copied straight without compression.)

  • Networked Music Library - How to refresh multiple machines' library window?

I want to have my iTunes music library on a network hard drive, accessed by multiple machines.
But, if I add / rip new tracks into the library, only the machine that ripped the tracks knows they are there. The others are oblivious to the new tracks.
How do I get the other machines to automatically check the library to see if any new tracks have been added, and add them to their respective library windows if they find any?
    Thanks - Dave G.

Interesting question! And, one that I will use often, so I did a test.
My main library is on my iMac, my travel library is on my MBP. Once back home, simply choose File:Import:Library/Project. Now browse to the MBP (file sharing must be enabled), and select the travel library & import. I did NOT have Aperture running on the MBP during the import.
    It works quite well.

  • Can't load music library on Blackberry Link

When I click on my computers files to load my music library through Blackberry Link it says:
Blackberry Link Wasn't Able to Load Your Music Library
    Close then reopen Blackberry Link
Did that many times, rebooted the computer, reinstalled the program etc all won't load my Itunes library.
It worked fine on BB Desktop Manager with my Bold 9900 which I was using until yesterday.
When right clicking on all music and going sync to > Blackberry10. It says 'A problem occured while attempting to access your media library (the sync did not complete."
Although there is no music there anyway as it can't load my Itunes library
    Can someone please help?
    Thanks

I find it easier to just go through windows explorer and treat the phone as a memory stick. I click and drag everything over, a bit archaic but it works for me, problem free.
It's always funny when it's someone else.

  • I deleted some files from my iTunes music library, how do I get them back?

Hi there, I hope you can help.
I have had an 80Gb iPod for a while now, but it got full, so I was deleting stuff that I didn't listen to very often from my iTunes library as I added new music. However, I kept all the music in my iTunes Music folder.
I have now purchased a 120Gb iPod, but obviously some of my music is only in the iTunes Music folder, but NOT actually in my music library within iTunes. Is there a way to sync the entire library with the new iPod (ie. including all the albums that I deleted from my iTunes library to accommodate new ones), or will I have to manually check my entire iTunes music library against my iTunes Music folder?
In essence, what I want to do is the opposite of consolidating my iTunes music library into my iTunes Music folder - to get all the music in my iTunes Music folder back into the library, without duplicating the stuff that's on there already. I hope that's clear...?
    Best regards,
    Matt.

Try iTunes Folder Watch for rereading the content you deleted, assuming you only removed it from the library, not the media folder. If you deleted the tracks then restore those that remain from the recycle bin first.
When you are finished you should have a new playlist with all the tracks that iTFW found. Rename this Exclude and then create a smart playlist called, say, iPod Music with the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Exclude. This is the playlist you sync with your device, and any time it grows too large just find some more stuff to throw into Exclude.

  • IPhone 4 won't load music library on Sync

Hello. I've been having this problem for over a month now. My iphone 4 won't sync any of my music from my itunes library. I have tried a HUGE number of things. It does not seem to be related to itunes match issues.
I am trying to sync with my phone connected via USB. I cannot seem to get the wifi connection between my computer and device.
I am at a loss, and extremely angered that I cannot listen to my music. What should I try next? Am I missing something? What do I try next?

I'm delighted to hear you've made progress
I've been thinking and playing a bit too.  It turns out I sync all my music (successfully), but if I were to only sync a part, here's what my music sync page would look like:
The big difference I see is I don't have collections - and never did.  Anyway, I'm wondering if the issue is somewhere in your computer's music library having gotten confused somewhere along the line.  I suspect you've had your iTunes setup for a long time (many years).  It would be drastic, but I'm wondering if you would consider some iTunes library reorganization processes.  Of course, I understand if you don't want to go this way.
One option is to delete the iTunes database file, but that would delete all your playlists, song ratings, etc.  It would then be rebuilt from scratch.  That's very drastic, but here's a writeup about it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
Another option is to do something like go to iTunes' Preferences > Advanced and check "Keep iTunes Media FIle Organized."  Or from iTunes' Files menu item, you could choose Library > Organize Library and then one of the two following choices (probaby "Reorganize Files ...).
Finally one thing you do that I've never seen before is in your summary options area, you are converting higher bit rates to 256K AAC.  I've never seen that, and hope converting MP3 to AAC doesn't cause you problems.  This little snip from iTunes' help just aroused my suspicion a bit about this action:
Anyway, glad you're headed down the path of progress!

  • My iTunes has deleted my music library- how do you fix?

I tried importing a disk into my iTunes library, and it asked me to name the file.  So I did, but now my iTunes has that name displayed on the top and all my music and playlists are gone.  I tried uninstalling and re-installing, but it didn't fix the issue.  How do I revert back so I can have access to all my songs, videos, books, etc?  HELP!!

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl.
Given your iTunes windows is currently showing up with the wong name you will need to hold down shift as you start iTunes, then click the option to Choose a library and navigate to the correct file.  Should all be good now, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

    Hi Icetreay:
    Thanks for reporting this.
It looks like we make assumptions about where the physical playlists in Windows Media Player are stored on the computer.   They usually reside in a folder like: C:\Users\username\Music\Playlists\test.wpl
However, you must have a playlist located outside of this folder and it’s causing Media Sync to fail.
You could do a search of your computer to find all *.wpl files.
The ones that would cause us problems are playlists that are near the root.  Ie
    C:\myplaylist\list.wpl
    C:\myplaylists\lists\list.wpl
If you move or delete these playlists, we should work again.
This issue will be fixed in the next version.
    Cheers
    M

  • Organizing the Zen Photo music library - how

    Hi,
I just got my Zen Micro Photo, and I quickly threw whatever music I had on it.
I started browsing it, and quickly saw that extremely many files were just listed as 'Unknown', yet could be played.
Having knowledge about computers I realized that the Zen apparently draws its informations from the files document info, which can be accessed through properties when right clicking a file.
Is there any way to make the Zen just get the information from the name of the file, or in some way change the document info of thousands of files in an easier way than manually right clicking each and everyone of them?
I'm somewhat of a perfectionist, and I'd like all the files on my zen to be listed the same kind of way.
I hope you guys have some ideas and suggestions
    Thanks in advance!

this also happned to me, you need to copy and paste all your music onto the player, dont go through "add media"

  • Itunes 12.1 has wiped music library - how to restore it?!

Updated to iTunes 12.1 last night and iPod Touch 4th Gen also updated to IOS 8.1.3.
Went to use my iPod today and all of my music has disappeared. Logged onto iTunes and it has all disappeared out of the library but shows in the "music" section of the iPod summary page. Tried restoring from backup and re-syncing but now any trace of the 1900 songs has completely disappeared.
Have tried a few of the suggestions online to no avail.
    Can anyone help?

iTunes won't offer to download previous purchases if there is a broken entry looking for the lost track. Delete that entry, don't hide from iTunes in the cloud, then redownload from your purchase history.
For cleaning the dead links here are two alternatives:
    Lost & Found Playlists
Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist (it may take some time to count the tracks that are to be dropped). Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist. You should be able to select all the tracks in this playlist with CTRL-A and then remove them from iTunes with CTRL-SHIFT-DELETE. In the unlikely event iTunes asks if anything should be kept or recycled you've made a mistake somewhere.
However I prefer to use iTunes Folder Watch with its option to Check for dead tracks on startup selected.
