Nesting into different sequence settings

Howdy, I have an assumption I would like to check.
I have a final sequence edited in NTSC DV.
I want to avoid DV recompression on the way to Compressor and DVD, so I am moving it to an 8-bit sequence.
In the past I have done this by copying all the contents to the new sequence.
But it occurs to me that it might be the same result if I nest the DV sequence in the 8-bit sequence instead.
Is it the same... i.e. no rendered DV recompressions will make it through the DV sequence either way?
Reasons to bother: want to avoid confusion with any further fixups, and I want to apply BS and audio compression to the nest anyway.
Thanks.

As far as I know, only markers in the sequence time ruler and cuts in the sequence you encode will make it through as compression/edit/cut markers/in Compressor. So if you edit one sequence into another, you'll have to get the markers into the "container" sequence. You can do this by nesting all the clips within the original sequence, or by duplicating the sequence and editing the original into it.
Some potential advantages to not nesting in this way:
Compressor will put an I-frame at each cut in your sequence, whereas nesting them will only allow Compressor to put extra I-frames on chapter or compression markers you have added.
By placing a broadcast safe filter on the entire nested sequence, you are possibly clamping down on the luma and saturation on clips that don't need it, but more importantly, you are forcing FCP to process that filter even for the 80-90% of frames in your sequence which would be unaffected by it, greatly increasing your render/encode times.
I usually wind up cusotmizing a BS filter and saving it in the favorites bin, same with audio compression, and then quickly adding it to individual clips or groups by dragging from the favorites, or by pasitng attributes.
Happy editing -

  • Merging old sequence timeline into project with different sequence settings?

I successfully did this yesterday. But when I tried to replicate my efforts, I got different and unwanted results.
I have an old project created in Pro 2.0. It has a timeline that I want to keep. In the old project, the sequece settings did not match the source clip, so 2.0 overscanned in rendering.
I created the proper sequence setting in 5.5. Then I imported the original sequence from the old project. The first time I did it, it took the old timeline and merged it with the new sequence settings--a perfect result. Today when I try to replicate that effort, it brings in the old timeline, but applies the old settings, resulting the overscanned result.
How, step-by-step, do I get the result I want--an old timeline with new settings????
    Thanks very much!

    Thanks Simon.
Let me clarify. What I'm trying to do is to correct the sequence setting without having to reassemble the whole project.
As I said, I was able to do just that yesterday, but have not been able to duplicate my efforts.

  • Can use different sequence settings on the same project file ?

I have 2 camcorders now, one is a AVCHD and the other is HDV tape.
    QUESTION 1:
As the former is 1920 x 1080 and HDV is 1440 x 1080, can I use all the clips of 1920 x 1080 in sequence 1 and all the clips of 1440 x 1080 in sequence 2 (both sequence 1 & sequence 2 are in the same .fcp project file) ?
    QUESTION 2:
I often seen Tom saying the settings in Easy setup and be the same settings in the sequence settings.
If in Easy Setup, I select AVCHD PAL - 1920 x 1080i50, how do I select the same for sequence settings ?
    Thanks

    1. A qualified yes because I don't know what sequence 1 and 2 are.
    2. The easy setup is your sequence setting. Make a new sequence and it will be in that format.
If you want to mix the media from those it cameras it would probably be better if you can switch the AVCHD camera to shoot 1440x1080; most can do that, and it would then match the media from the HDV camera.

  • Different sequence settings at class level

We are using native oracle sequencing. Can i configure toplink to expect a preallocations size of 1000 for a couple of my classes, but 1 for the rest?
    thanks

    Craig,
This functionality was added after the second preview so is not yet available or documented. It will be available in the next preview (planned for October).
We have not announced a final production release date for 10.1.3.

  • Mixing Timeline Sequence Settings

    Hey all,
I have this sitcom that I've filmed. Episodes 1-4 are shot with a Sony HDRFX7. And then for Episode 5 (finale) we filmed it with a different camera. JVC HD something.
Problem is, our opening title theme song clip is made up of clips from episodes 1-4. (works fine in those episodes)/
But the same clip show must be used in episode 5 (with clips from episode 1-4). But the timeline sequence settings are different now. So the opening theme got all messed up when i copied it into the episode 5 timeline.
Is there anyway to fix this issue? I haven't tried manually fixing it. But is there anyway to have two different sequence settings? Or any other suggestions?

Please provide detailed sequence settings AND footage settings... (in this case two footage settings). select your footage, hit command-9.
    Frame Size?
    Aspect Ratio?
    Pixel Aspact Ratio?
    Anamorphic?
    FIeld Dominance?
    Editing TImebase?
    Compressor?
    Audio Settings? Rate/Depth

  • Stabilization for the project with the different video settings

If i open project with the settings for 1080p video and then add to it 720p video, how can i make stabilization for it? (When i open another video with the different sequence settings it does not allow me to make stabilization)
Is there any way of working in one sequence with the different settings of the video?

Footage that does not match the sequence setting nest first then add the Warp.

  • Sequence settings problem

    Hi,
I'm just about done with a project that has 22 sequences...all shot on a sony HDV camera. Everything looks great except the first sequence...it has different sequence settings then the rest. When I go to change that sequence to match the others (HD 1440x1080) it letterboxes it and puts the clips in a tiny rectangle in the middle of the window. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance!
    Molly

You cannot change the settings when video is in the sequence.
Try copying all the video/audio on your sequence. Delete it. Then make your sequence changes. Then paste the video/audio back to the sequence.
If that doesn't work try fixing your first clip. copy it. Select the remaining video. Hit Option V. Select Basic Motion. You may have to adjust some clips depending on your edits.
    Good luck.

  • Match sequence settings, why is it exporting in a different size?

I am a little new to this but I want to export my timeline in 2704x1440. I have footage of varying sizes and when i tried to stabilise some of the larger shots in the timeline I got a warning that I can not do it, the shots would have to match the timeline. This is a real pain. I could't find a work around on line so I'm putting the shots into their own sequence, stabilising them there then trying to export them back into the project. All very well but with it set to "Match sequence settings" it down sizes the export to 1080? Anyone know what I'm doing wrong or a better way round the stabilising problem??

you may have removed files from iTunes but chose to keep them.
if that's the case, you should be able to track the files down using this script:
Music Folder Files Not Added v2.0
This application will list the file paths of the files in your designated "iTunes Media" folder which are not in iTunes' library. Additionally, you can select a different parent folder and its contents will be compared to the iTunes library. Options to Add a selection of found files to iTunes or move them to the Trash.

  • Using nested styles to break blocks of text into different pages

    Hello everyone,
I'm treating data collected through a Google Docs form and I've already set it up so that the questions appear on the left and are followed by the respective answers sequentially so that I have a simple way to copy paste the whole information to Indesign. Then I'm going to use nested styles to define individual styles for the questions and answers.
What I can't do, however... and I'm not even sure if it's possible, is how to tell Indesign to break text that is laid out sequentially into different lines or to break blocks of text so that they start in the beggining of the next page without having to resize the text frames by hand.
As a visual example this is what the data I've exported out of excel looks like:
Question 1 (tab) Answer A1 (line break)
Question 2 (tab) Answer A2 (line break)
Question 3 (tab) Answer A3 (line break)
Question 1 (tab) Answer B1 (line break)
Question 2 (tab) Answer B2 (line break)
Question 3 (tab) Answer B3 (line break)
(and so on in groups of 3 questions)
And I want to turn it into:
Question 1 (turn the tabs into line breaks)
    Answer A1
    Question 2
    Answer A2
    Question 3
    Answer A3
(and then start at the beggining of a new page)
    Question 1
    Answer B1
    Question 2
    Answer B2
    Question 3
    Answer B3
I can't define the size of the text frames so that the next group of questions+answers starts at the beggining of a new page because some of the answers are multi-line fields and thus the number of lines of the answers are variable and they can come short of the text frame edge or pass it.
Can anyone share some insight of how to do this (or if it is at all possible)?
    Thank you very much!
    MACC

Thank you very much for your input.
I'm trying to automate this process as much as possible because I don't want to have to crunch the data manually myself later on, instead just teach someone else how to do it.
The first search and replace action seems basic enough but regarding the second one I would have to manually assign that paragraph style to the line where the data would break because one can only assign character styles in nested styles, right?
Also I've heard that ID CS5 automatically creates new pages based on a template when you paste information inside the first page, is that so? That would be great because that way the person wouldn't have to manually create pages and link the contents throughout the document but instead simply open my template and paste the information within the first master page. That's not possible with CS4, is it?
    Thank you very much!

  • Separate Sections of a Sequence with different encoding settings

    Hi!
Is it possible to set different encoding settings for different parts of a Final Cut sequence? If yes, what must I do?
    Take care,
    Christian

All I want to change is the quality setting of the h.264 codec.
It's all about the movies you will find at:
    http://www.teachers-corner.org/feeds/TC_RSS.xml
    (beware, large files)
All these movies start off with an intro, which needs a quality setting of 75% to look good. The rest of the screencast looks good enough with a setting of 50%.
All other parameters shall remain unchanged.
    Did that help?
    Take care,
    Christian

  • Error message when cutting a sequence into a sequence

When we try to cut a sequence into another sequence, we either get a nested sequence (the nest tool is turned off) or we crash with this error message:
We are in Premiere Pro 2014.2 with our media on a server.  I moved the entire project to  my local drive and tried it that way but had the exact same result.
I switched the General Settings and changed the Mercury Playback Engine to software only.  It did not help.  I have no unlicensed plug ins and cleared my media cache.
I've spoken to the Adobe help line (!argh!) but he was unable to fix the issue.  He did delete all of my settings I was starting at the defaults.  This did not help either.
Has anyone any experience with the above error message?
    Thanks.

    Yes.
I see now that I can paste into the layer I am copying from, but not into any other layer. If I lock my source layer, I can't paste at all.

  • Using Animation in your Sequence Settings ... Amazing!

    Well here's the thing ....
And I'll start off by saying I have so much to learn about FCP but this has made a big difference to how my images look, especially graphics and titles.
So I'm working away at my project and the graphic images that I import into the timeline from the viewer are just ok and I'm a bit disillusioned like so many people seem to be on these forums about how the image degrades from the viewer to the canvas. And of course it is apparent later on the QT file and then the DVD that's produced at the end.
So one day, and I can't remember how it came about, I open the sequence settings and change the Compressor in QT Video Settings to Animation! Well what can I say, the image in the canvas was absolutely perfect and in some cases, it's actually a little better than how it looked in the viewer before I brought it across.
I have to produce a DVD where each week, some of the moving footage and graphic images have to be changed over. A total of about 15 minutes and all of it of course is in this Animation sequence. The downside of using Animation is
    (1) the rendering time is horrendous, (or is that horrenderous?)
    (2) as I'm editing, the playhead disobeys what you ask of it and you get the spinning beach ball quite often (can take 1-4 minutes before you can continue again)
    (3) sometimes when you're playing through the timeline the image on the canvas and the sound quality are poor (processor running out of puff I guess)
It's a bit of a nightmare but I have no choice but to use Animation now the Marketing Department have seen the difference and expect the higher quality on the images. Cannot get this quality with any other setting I've tried in the Compressor setting. HDV1080 for instance means the rendering problem goes away but the difference in quality is obvious. The project has many different files and formats from HDV to H264s to Pro Res 422s and lots of various jpegs in various forms. But regardless of the project, I have experimented with unrelated sequences in different projects with the same result.
My questions are..... has anyone else experienced this, is there another setting that would bring about the same results and lastly, would the rendering and the other problems significantly be reduced with say the top-end iMac?
I have to tell you I almost didn't post this coz I have so little experience with FCP but it would be great to get your feedback. The weekly project I produce may take more time than it should but I have to say I'm happy with the results.
    Thanks for reading.

Well... the animation codec is primarily used for sneakernetting files from one platform to another, mac to pc for example. It's a bear for a lot of computers to even play out a file without choking. The concept is make animation file, put on disk or drive, carry across the hall to the pc station, convert to something the pc station can use without choking.
I would suggest you try a little experiment: take your input material and convert it to prores (NOT HQ) before import or WHEN you import (log and transfer) and work with that natively. HDV as HDV is really a cruddy medium. Prores will give you a much better color space and have actual frames all the way through, which hdv does not. Take a one minute section of material, load on some graphics and filters etc, render it out, do your whole production process and see what it looks like. Once you move beyond the artifacts inherent in hdv and h.264 encoding you might be surprised.
Bad mistake to point out to marketing folks how cool it looks. You must be young!

When trying to sign into facebook in settings for ios6, I get an error that says "You cannot sign in from your iPhone since you have opted out of Facebook Platform." What gives?
More info: I've combed through the settings in facebook and there is nothing that shows I'm blocking anything from accessing it.

Sure sounds like a Facebook setting. When you look at your Privacy Settings in Facebook (on facebook.com), you should see something under "Apps you use" that says
Turn off your ability to use apps, plugins, and websites on and off Facebook. After you turn this off, we will not store information about you when you use apps or websites off Facebook.
The "Turn off" is a hyperlink that shuts down the Facebook platform. If you don't see this, or if the wording is different, you may have (inadvertently?) shut this off, and should be able to turn it back on.
Edit: The sequence to that screen on facebook.com is: Privacy Settings (from the upper right dropdown), then "Ads, Apps and Websites" will have an "Edit settings" link to the right. This is where you'll see the "Apps you use" screen.

  • Sequence settings / render confusion

    Hi,
One thing with FCP I never seem to understand is the way that it deals with sequence settings. I always find myself thinking: Final Cut Pro is smart, why can't it just figure out what my clip settings are and adjust it so that I don't have to do a render?
Quite frequently, I will get a video, and think that I understand exactly what format it is, etc.. and I will drag it into FCP and set the settings to match, and the red-line will persist, and force me to render... I just don't understand this.
Just now, I used Snap-Z-Pro to do a screen capture, and I recorded audio with my microphone via logic pro.. So I had an aiff and this quicktime .mov file (animation compression, 30fps) 921 x 926... All I wanted to do was combine them together, and export them to compressor so that I could make an h.264 video and upload it to the web.
I brought the video into FCP, told the sequence settings to be Animation.. I got the red line...
I set the resolution to custom, pixel aspect to square.. set the x & y to 921 and 926...
    red line...
I also noticed that the clip attributes in the bin/browser show hat it is "10fps" when snapzpro recorded at 30fps, and it certainly does not look like 10fps.
... Anyway.. Lastly, I took a small 5 second clip and exported it to compressor to see how it looked.. And it looks awful. The frame size is super small and surrounded by black--- Even though the frame size of the sequence settings matches the frame size of the video! How do I tell FCP to just leave the original material alone and let me just add audio to it?
    thank you!
    -p

First off, you need to use Cinema Tools to conform your footage to 30fps. SnapzPro doesn't make a solid 30fps...it wavers when you play back. Cinema Tools will lock the frame rate...basically add timecode to lock thing into place. Dunno why Snapz does what it does.
Next, if you had FCP 6, it would make a sequence to match the settings. Although I am not sure about YOUR settings. FCP is designed for working with tape and tapeless broadcast formats, not strange sized windows. But this might help...Making a timeline with off-codec settings:
    http://proappstuff.com/proapptipsvideotutorials/194F4DC2-ACBB-4DD6-A1D0-F46D7D8D CAFC/739BE552-5A0A-474C-8792-537C4082427B.html
Lastly...Animation is not an editing codec. It is an uncompressed codec that makes huge files and requires more than a firewire drive to play back...talking decent RAID here. If you converted to a different lighter codec then playback would be smoother.

  • Sequence settings when mixing 25fps (1920x1080) and 50fps (1280x720) ??

I've got some DSLR footage filmed at different frame rates (25 and 50) and as a result also different sizes (1920 x 1080 / 1280 x 720) compressed as H.264.... can anybody advise me as to what format the footage would edit best in (fastest render times) what my sequence settings (frame rate and frame size) should be in FCP while editing a mixture of both these types of footage? I understand that setting the frame rate at 50 is suitable for slowing 50fps footage down by 50% but would this affect the 25fps footage?
Any help would be brilliant, cheers.

Convert both to ProRes. If you want, Magic Bullet Grinder will make this process very fast, and upscale the 720p footage to 1080, and make the 50fps into smooth slow motion 25fps. It utilizes all the processors in the computer.
Sadly it doesn't bring in the source timecode nor assign a reel number (important to professional editors). The only way to do that is via Log and Transfer...here's the workflow for that: Tapeless Workflow for FCP 7 Tutorial
Most important is to backup the files, and to convert to ProRes. What footage do you have the most of? What format do you want to deliver? These are what help you decide what format to edit in. Do you want the 50fps to be slow motion? Then use can CONFORM with Cinema Tools. And edit in a 1080p timeline (720p will be upscaled).
