Sequence settings when mixing 25fps (1920x1080) and 50fps (1280x720) ??

I've got some DSLR footage filmed at different frame rates (25 and 50) and as a result also different sizes (1920 x 1080 / 1280 x 720) compressed as H.264.... can anybody advise me as to what format the footage would edit best in (fastest render times) what my sequence settings (frame rate and frame size) should be in FCP while editing a mixture of both these types of footage? I understand that setting the frame rate at 50 is suitable for slowing 50fps footage down by 50% but would this affect the 25fps footage?
Any help would be brilliant, cheers.

Convert both to ProRes. If you want, Magic Bullet Grinder will make this process very fast, and upscale the 720p footage to 1080, and make the 50fps into smooth slow motion 25fps. It utilizes all the processors in the computer.
Sadly it doesn't bring in the source timecode nor assign a reel number (important to professional editors). The only way to do that is via Log and Transfer...here's the workflow for that: Tapeless Workflow for FCP 7 Tutorial
Most important is to backup the files, and to convert to ProRes. What footage do you have the most of? What format do you want to deliver? These are what help you decide what format to edit in. Do you want the 50fps to be slow motion? Then use can CONFORM with Cinema Tools. And edit in a 1080p timeline (720p will be upscaled).

  • Sequence Settings when using low resolution video

I am going to create a project that will consist of DV 720 x 480 and some really low resolution video from digital still image cameras.
    1. If I export as DV NTSC, what is technically happening with the video that is in my Sequence that is smaller than 720 x 480? Is it being stretched to 720 x 480?
    2. If my project did not include the 720 x 480 video, would it be better if I adjust the sequence settings to match the size of the low resolution video?
    Thanks.

#1: If you make a 720x280 DV NTSC sequence and insert the low-res video, how it appears in the canvas will be how it appears upon export.
#2: Depends on your intended output.

  • FCP sequence settings when shooting 24p, 2:3:3:2 at 16x9?

I'm attempting to edit my first feature project on FCP after having shot footage on a canon xl2 at 24p, 2:3:3:2 and using the 16:9 frame size.
Can't find specifics about the proper FCP settings anywhere in the manual for editing footage shot this way. So I'm wondering-- since the captured footage shows up in the browser as 720x480, should the sequence setting be dialed in the same? Also should I be editing in the timeline with sequence settings at NTSC DV (3:2)and the anamorphic 16:9 box checked?
Oh... and one more thing-- how much memory would you guys recommend be allocated to the fcp application (i'm guessing less than 100%)and how much to the thumbnails?
I've got my notions on all this but am a little nervous about going forward without some reassurance. Appreciate any help you can offer on these questions.

You're best off creating a new, custom Easy Setup to meet your needs...
Press Option-Command-Q to launch the Audio/Video Settings dialog
Select the Sequence Presets tab, then...
    Click DV-NTSC 48 kHz - 23.98 and press Duplicate
In the Sequence Preset Editor, check the Anamorphic 16:9 box
Rename this Sequence Preset to DV-NTSC 48 kHz - 23.98 Anamorphic and click OK
Back in the Sequence Settings tab, place a checkmark next to your newly created sequence preset to select it as your current preset
Select the Capture Presets tab, and repeat the previous sub-steps for DV-NTSC 48 kHz Advanced Pulldown Removal
(that is, duplicate, adjust for Anamorphic, rename, then select as your preset)
Select the Summary tab and confirm that you've got the correct presets for all selections - outside of what you've adjusted already, Device Control as well as Video Playback should be set to FireWire NTSC - then click the Create Easy Setup button
Enter a name and description, then click OK
After you've saved your preset, click OK to exit Audio/Video Settings
You've now got your system up and running correctly so that you can digitize and edit.
If, for any reason, you screw up your settings, you've now got an Easy Setup that you can simply access at anytime, simple press Control-Q and select it from the options. Or if you're a menubar person, that's Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup.
Oh... and one more thing-- how much memory would you guys recommend be allocated to the fcp application (i'm guessing less than 100%)and how much to the thumbnails?
Personally, I leave mine at 100% - never had a problem with it. However, many here advise dialing it down to 70% or so (if I can remember correctly - hopefully someone else will chime in if I'm wrong).
The default thumbnail value is fine as well, in my experience.

  • Sequence settings for mixed 24f,30f

I shot a friend's wedding on a HVX in 24p on tape (not cards) and a 2nd camera 30fps on a consumer DV camera. I want to edit these together; I do not know what the Sequence settings should be or what challenges are involved. My final output is a DVD. Any help is appreciated.

24P on tape is still 30 fps. It's 24fps with a 3:2 pulldown added. Just set your sequence for NTSC 29.97 DV...

It's normal for the icons at the top level of the startup disk to revert to the same arrangement every time the Finder is relaunched. If it's important to you to arrange those icons in a persistent way, proceed as follows.
    Back up all data.
Open the Info window on the startup disk (labeled "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it another name.) Click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate.
In the Sharing & Permissions section, click the plus-sign button to add an entry to the access list. Give yourself "Read and Write" access. This will be a temporary change. Leave the dialog open.
Open the Finder window and arrange the icons as you wish, then close the window.
In the Info dialog, use the minus-sign button to delete the entry you just added to the access list. Don't change anything else. When you're done, it should be the same as when you started. Close the Info dialog.

  • How do you change sequence settings in Premiere Pro CS6, and earlier?

Is it possible to change a sequences settings once you've set up the sequence?
In Sequence Settings everything is grayed out so I can't change it.

What type of camera did you record your AVCHD footage on? The reason I ask is because I'm thinking the most likely reason it thought your video was interlaced is because several AVCHD camera's shoot footage that they call "1080p" but it's not actually normal progressive footage. It's actually PsF footage. (Progressive segmented frame)  Which with this footage it just records both fields, so what ends up happening is that Premiere ends up reading the footage like it's interlaced which it basically is, except unlike normal interlaced footage this PsF has both fields. Anyways though you can find out if this is the case by using the modify>interpet option from inside your bin, then if it says that you files field order is anything besides progressive then you'll know you will need to conform the footage to progressive as explained in this article in order to make Premiere work with it properly. Although this issue might not be the same thing you're experincing I just figured I'd mention that since it's fairly common place for AVCHD cameras to record PsF.
You may want to check out this article although it may not apply to you depending on what type of camera you're using. Although they cover basically all the major AVCHD camera makers

  • Presentation Director loses settings when switching between Chinese and English

I've done the "Install files for East Asian languages" and then set the "Language for non-Unicode programs" to "Chinese (PRC)". I do this for our presales people so they can show our prospects that our software is translated (for those that have plants in China and the US). I have the default language set to English. I don't believe it's relevant but I should also mention that this is on a Lenovo T61 with XP-SP3.
When I use the Presentation Director (Fn+F7) most of the screen shows in Chinese. The ones I've added show in English (I have a screen snapshot). I also get Chinese characters in other Lenovo utilities as well.
So I figured I'd just change the "Language for non-Unicode programs" back to English, reboot, and the display would be OK. Not so! The display is in English all right, but NOTHING appears in the window - none of the default settings, none that I added, JUST NOTHING! I have a snapshot of this as well.
I changed the Unicode setting back to Chinese, reboot, and Presentation Director shows all of them still there, some in Chinese and some in English like before.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can get the Presentation Director utility to display properly (in English) and show all the original settings as well? Obviously the settings are stored somewhere since when Chinese is turned on it can display them.
    Thanks in advance!

i was wondering if you could give me a quick overview of how to write characters

  • What is the best way to setup premiere sequence for export when mixing 24fps and 23.976fps for final

What is the best way to setup a premiere sequence for export when mixing 24fps (CG) and 23.976fps (live action) for final output at 23.976 (vimeo and such).
Right now my sequence is at 24fps, and when I export to 23.976, my dialogues seem to shift.
Should I set my sequence at 23.976fps instead of 24fps?
Thanks in advance for the help, and sincere apologies if this is a noob question.
    David

That makes it easy.  Remove the CGs from the project.  Go to Edit>Preferences>Media... and set the Indeterminate Media Timebase to 23.976.  Then when you import the image sequence, PP will assign it the correct frame rate.
    Edit in a 23.976 sequence.

  • FCP 6 Sequence Settings and RT playback problem

    Hi everyone
Have recently bought a copy of Final Cut Pro Studio for my macbook pro
I know to play video in FCP in real time all the sequence settings need to match the captured video/file settings of the clip.
All my settings are matching, Ive tripple checked them but they are STILL saying I need to render the clip before playback in SafeRT.
Have tried deleating files and re-importing them ect still no go.
The file ive imported is a DVCPRO HD codec.
I cant render everytime I want to play a video - thats not an option. It should be okay if all the settings match (Which I belive they do) but still not working.... is there a vital setting I may have missed?
Im running FCP 6 on a
    Mackbook pro 17"
    5400 rpm sata drive
NIVIDIA 8600 geforce 256MB graphics card
    160GB hard drive
    2.0 MB Memory
    this prob is SO WEIRD
    cheers
    h

Yeah tried doing that, plays okay but really want to get the safeRT working properly
wow - i didnt realize that the 5400rpm drive in the macbook pro would preform so poorley with compressed codecs such as DVCPRO which is a pretyt standard codec yes?
I guess the 7200rpm drive now is def the way to go - i was getting one anyway
so does it matter that the computer drive speed is 5400rpm when working of a 7200 rpm firewire 800port drive? I assume that if all the media is on the 7200rpm the computer internal drive would only be running the program, which would be more then enough do you agree?
Its looks as if FCP 6 has some way of recognising the computer drive speed for accessing the media and determining whether it is fast enough or not, if not, wont even try to attempt to play in RT resulting in the red render line, no matter if I have my sequences settings all set up correctly and matching. This is something that I am unclear about in the software.

  • PP 5.5 - DNxHD Matched Sequence Settings exports washed out video

Just want to make sure I'm not missing something. We shot on Scarlet, and after color we got back 1920x1080 DNxHD files.
Im concerned because after conforming, I'm using Match Sequence Settings to export from Premiere and my export video is washed out and different than the original.
Here's the original DNxHD video that I got from our colorist. (all i did was change the filename)
    https://www.yousendit.com/download/TEhXNU1KTlF6RS9xYk1UQw
This is the file Premiere spit out after using Match Sequence Settings (a little shorter because original clip had handles)
    https://www.yousendit.com/download/TEhXNU1KTlE0b0R2WnRVag
Sequence Settings below. It's also worth it to note that even though I'm choosing 1080p 23.976 DNxHD 175 10-bit and clicking okay, whenever I click configure again under "Video Previews", the dropdown list has defaulted back to 1080i 59.94 DNxHD 220 10-bit. weird. 709 vs. RGB is not making a difference for me.
My Export settings, just for good measure. "Use Maximum Render Quality" isn't making a difference for me
Side by Side comparison. You can really see the difference in the hair above her left eye. Original has a bit more contrast.
I can get good looking exports using other codecs and settings, PhotoJPEG works pretty well, but I know in a lot of cases DNxHD is kind of a standard for finishing work, and up until now I've done mostly broadcast and I've never worked with this Avid codec before. This is our first project with this camera so I want to make sure I'm doing the post-color work correctly. Our colorist already kinda boned us by not haing a red rocket and basically forcing me to take this codec. I'm just wondering if there is some color management step or setting that I'm missing. I really need this export to match the original.
Thanks for all your help, hopefull i can learn something here

Have you tried comparing the footage from inside of Premiere? Put each of the before and afters over top of each other in Premiere itself and see if they look different.  Honestly I downloaded your test file and played them from inside premiere right side by side and didn't notice the problem that I see occuring in your pictures. However I did notice a bit of aspect change or something. But nothing related to color.Anyways just try placing them in premiere and comparing them both from inside Premiere.
If just simply placing the files inside Premiere doesn't fix the issue to begin with. Then attempt to change your preview file format in premiere to something besides Quicktime.
But honestly in the pics you posted I can see a clear difference however when I pull both of your files from rapidshare into Premiere Pro on my windows machine using the standard mpeg preview codec I see no color differences.
Like Jim said though Quicktime can't be trusted for color accuracy it has several known gamma issues.

  • FCP- DVDSP sequence settings. frame size

Question of sequence settings. when making a DVD, will the sequence setting, Frame size make a difference?
We are just starting to edit a documentary, which uses alot of still photos and graphics. The rest of the video is shot on DV. I have tried laying still photos on the DV sequence, but it looks like still photos look really compressed and blurry. Not so good quality wise. If I set it to CCIR 601-NTSC, the photos look super good. We are NOT outputting any digi-beta uncompressed, but only to DVD.
I am editing sequence in NTSC DV, but thinking of just before getting outputting with compressor, I am thinking of changing to uncompressed sequence CCIR 601-NTSC, and then compress it to MPEG2. (doing this later so that i can do alot of edits RealTime and worry about picture quality later) of course the picture size does get smaller... I don't really know the effect of this on a teleframed television.
Will that make a difference? Seems that if I go through DVcompression AND MPEG2 compression, both, is more compression than MPEG2 compression itself. Is there a site that talks about it?
    Thanks in advance.
    Lost

I only have "a bit" of experience working with stills in a DV sequence. But one thought concerns how you are integrating the stills and the video. I assume you are going to pretty much intermix the stills and the video and audio (interviews or whatever) that may go with video and stills.
The DVD format, of course, supports stills as a slide show directly, but this will not accomplish the intermix very effectively.
As far as size-quality, you may want to import the stills are larger than DV image size and then pan across them, etc.
At the end of the day, to achieve a seamless edit job, you are probably going to need to have all the stills sitting on a regular DV timeline for export / encoding to MPEG2.
I honestly do not put much stock in the differences between viewer and canvas. I always use an external NTSC monitor to judge the final appearance. I started with a cheap TV and recently upgrade to a nice JVC production monitor. This is the real measure of the final video, in my experience.

  • Sequence Settings for .mov clips from MPEG Streamclip

I'm converting some DVD clips (from old DVDs I created) that I exported to QT using MPEG Streamclip.
When I put them in the timeline sequence, I have to render everything.
Can I change the sequence settings to avoid this? And can I change the settings of a sequence that already has clips in it?
    Thanks.

I set MPEG Streamclip QT Export to:
    QT Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC
    Frame Size 720X480 (DV-NTSC)
    Quality 100%
    http://i44.tinypic.com/29zdhr9.png

Frame size 720X480 NTSC DV (3:2)
    Compressor DV DVCPRO - NTSC
    http://i44.tinypic.com/of3h8h.png
I still need to render. And the aspect ration looks squished in a bit. Like I've set something wrong.
What am I doing wrong? How should I change the settings:

  • Sequence Settings - Video Processing question!? AVCHD

I'm using the panasonic HMC40, very similar to the HMC150.
    So i'm shooting in AVCHD.
My Sequence Settings are as follow...
    1280x720 - HDTV 720p (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio - Square
Quicktime Video Settings Compressor: Apple ProRes422 - quality 100%
('Interlace' and 'Enable 4:4:4 chroma filtering' are NOT selected)
    Video Processing
    Render in 8-bit YUV
    Process Maximum White as: White
    Motion Filtering Quality: Normal
now while i'm editing the footage looks good, but when i go to export my video (export - quicktime movie - current settings - recompress all frames NOT selected) i get some weird lines from lights and color changes. almost like the colors aren't blending right.
does this have to do with the Video Processing settings?
what is the best way for setting this up for AVCHD footage to make it as close as possible to the real footage?

The weird lines from lines sounds like a function of cheap camera lenses. All consumer cameras show streaks off bright lights. Not sure what you mean by the colors not blending right, though it sounds like banding, which you often see in low light situations with small chips and heavily compressed formats like AVCHD. A screen shot of what you're talking about would be helpful.

  • Custom Sequence Settings for Split Screen

    Hello all,
FCP 6. I am doing a split screen where I am combining two 720x480 videos side by side. I did the whole project by scaling down both videos to match whatever the sequence settings were. How can I create a custom canvas/ sequence size to avoid scaling down the frames and cutting on the image quality?
I created a custom sequence setting doubling the width to 1440 and keeping height at 480.
Can I copy and paste the clips from the old sequence without the scaled down quality to the new sequence? How can I do that?
If I open a new sequence is the new setting going to be in effect?
Any other suggestions on how to deal with custom size frame/ split screen?
    Thank you!

    Dear Jim,
Thank you for help! Does make sense. I did all like you suggested. After removing 'basic motion' and pasting into new sequence, the clips appeared big default size instead of small. I re-applied motion attribute like you said, but isn't it scaling down again since I am sizing from big to small (50%) again?
It looks good on the screen but I am not sure about actual resolution of the clip. In clip-item properties-format I read frame size but I am not sure if this info is about the source file or the clip.
I would like to get around this issue without scaling down (keeping the scale in motion tab at 100%).
The way I tried to deal with the scaling and res before I got your answer, was after I changed the 'global' settings for the custom 1440x480 sequence, and after creating a new sequence, I went to sequence settings again (from top menu) and set to custom (1440x480) (with just global settings the pasted clips looked like before). After copying and pasting with removed attributes-distort, all was in the original right/left order normal size and resolution.
The way I tried seems to meet my need (as pasting attributes-motion to all again would be complicated as the design of the project does not stick to the clearly left/right pattern but fluctuates back and forth at times and there is too many short clips).
The only problem I have now is with the RENDER.
After I rendered what I did to your suggested solution and mine (two sequences), the whole project shows in low res. I checked the render settings in Sequence-Render Control, and both resolution and frame rate are set to 100% so I dont know what I do wrong.
    Any suggestions??
    THANKS!!!
