Netflix dvd not playing on iMac OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

Netflix dvd's are no longer playing on my iMac. I never had this problem before, it started about 2 months ago. I don't have any other dvd's to test out. I have OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Any suggestions?

Hi mputnam80,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iMac is not playing DVDs that you receive from Netflix and you have no other DVDs to test out. In this situation, I would recommend working through the troubleshooting steps located in the attached article to help isolate and resolve the situation.
Get help with the slot-loading SuperDrive on your Mac computer - Apple Support
Specific troubleshooting
Below are several possible symptoms you may see. Follow the steps for the appropriate symptom to figure out whether the issue stems from the drive or the media. Be sure to inspect discs before use to ensure they are not cracked, scratched, or otherwise damaged. Inspection should include the inner ring of the disc which should be smooth and burr free. A disc with physical defects may become stuck in or cause damage to the drive.
Doesn't accept discs
Be sure to check your disc to make sure it is flat. You can check this by putting the disc upside-down on a flat surface. If the disc is bowed up on any side or in the center, do not use the disc because it might get stuck in the drive. Do not use discs that have anything attached to them or dangling from them (such as "sweeper" or cleaning discs).
If the drive struggles when you put in a disc or stops part-way, carefully look at the disc for labels that may be interfering. If there aren't any raised labels then try putting the disc in a few more times.
Try another disc to see if the issue is being caused by a specific disc.
Make sure you insert the disc far enough for the drive mechanism to activate. You need to insert discs nearly all the way before the drive will activate and pull them in. If you don't completely insert a disc, the drive will reverse and push the disc back out.
Allow the drive one or two seconds to accept the disc while it is fully inserted.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
If the drive repeatedly does not accept discs, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
Best regards,
Joe

some orginial / genuine DVDs not playing in my iMac, need help!

Once your husband copied the movies, did he use a burn software to burn them to a DVD? You need to use a burn software to properly encode the footage so it'll play in any DVD player/computer/TV. So, once the movie is copied to your hard drive, you can edit it in iMovie (may need a converter first to get it into a format iMovie can work with such as MPEG Streamclip); after you're done in iMovie, use iDVD if you have it or Roxio Toast to burn it to a DVD.
And for the OP: Regions are different depending on where the movie was made: the US, Europe, etc. The regions are set within DVD player  - you insert a DVD and the player reads what region it originated in. Please note you can only change regions 5 x; after the 5th, that setting will remain and can't be changed again.

Video portion of Nightwish DVD not playing correctly on Quicktime.  It is not a smooth playback. A little jerky. Is there an easy slution to the problem?

I worded my question incorrectly. It isn't a DVD I'm having the problem with, it' s a Nightwish concert download form iTunes I am having the video portion of the video that plays not smoothy. Like it is moothing it short little segments, not a steady flow!

  • DVD will play on iMac, not on DVD player

I'm burning dual layer DVDs from iDVD. The DVDs won't play on my DVD player, but will play fine using the DVD player on the iMac. Anyone have any idea why?

But for 6 hours of VHS video, it will take two DL DVD disks.
You might want to think about importing the footage into iMovie and editing it.
I put footage from about 35 VHS tapes and about 40 Hi-8 tapes onto miniDV tapes for importing into iMovie and found that there was a quite a bit of bad footage: shots of ceilings and floors, jerky movements, shots of nothing important. With good editing, the footage total time length was cut down, and I have been able to use single-layer DVDs for all my iMovies. I have put our family's photos and videos onto DVDs in chronologic order. I have now done 30 years worth--the last 10 years were recorded onto miniDV tapes so no conversion needed. Some years took only one DVD; other years had to go on several; a couple of years we were very busy on trips/doing plays and sports and it took 5 or 6 disks for the year.
If you are not interested in editing, you wouldn't need to use a computer, just get one of those VHS-DVD converting machines.

  • Please help, DVD not playing in Mac that burnt t

I recently bought an iMac Core duo 17in. I finished my first project in iDVD and everything looked fine when I previewed in iDVD (I used slideshows exported from iPhoto as movies). Then I burnt it to a Fujifilm DVD+R. The process went smoothly and when finished the Mac ejected the finished DVD. Now the weird thing is that when I loaded the DVD to watch it in the same Mac, the computer was unable to read it and just ejected it w/o opening any application. Furthermore, my ONKYO DVD player did not recognize the disc at all. Any suggestions? Can it be related to the Region Codes and NTSC/PAL setting? But the Mac should be able to always read the DVD...It burnt it! Very frustrating...
Sorry for long message. Thanks for any help...
iMac Core Duo 17in   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You should not be using +R format DVDs. They will not play in most standard DVD players, although computers seem to be more forgiveable...
The recommended brand on this forum is Verbatim -R ( and not rewriteable either!)
I use TDK -R and they work fine.

  • NERO burned DVDs not compatible with iMacs?

Can anyone confirm that DVDs burned with NERO
(in this case NTSC, Region 0/NO region code)
are not compatible with iMacs' DVD player?
When I insert these DVDs they get mounted, but DVD player can't play them.
Is there a way to fix this?
Or does the maker of the DVDs have to use special settings in NERO
    to make them compatible?
    Thanks!

    Hi coxorange;
Since Nero is not an Apple product, I suggest you ask the vendor who wrote it.

    Hi john_,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iMac is reading DVDs but not CDs, and you've already reinstalled OS X, try these steps next:
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

  • DVD not playing in newer DVD player

    Here's what I'm using:
PowerBook G4 with a combo drive
    OS X 10.3.9
External Lacie 16x DVD Firewire 2.0 d2 drive
Toast Lite (came with DVD burner)
    iMovie 5 and iDVD 5
    Using Sony brand DVD-R disks
I created 2 movies in iMovie and imported them into iDVD. I used one of the motion menus available in iDVD5. When I was finished with my project, I saved a disk image to my desktop. I mounted the image to my desktop.
Toast Lite has 4 options - Data, Audio, Video or Copy.
I selected Data (I will explain why Data in a moment) and burned the mounted disk image. The DVD WILL play on my Mac, on a PC, on my TV DVD player (RCA brand) but it will NOT play on my bosses "very high tech, Sony Dream Machine" DVD player that is only 2 years old.
Now, I know everyone is going to tell me I should have selected Video in Toast Lite, but it doesn't work. If I select Video I receive error messages saying it can't read the files. According to Lacie's message boards - once you have made a "Disk Image" and mounted it, all the video encoding has already taken place, therefore Data should be selected in Toast Lite.
I've read in many places on these boards that the type of media used could be the problem. But I would think that a Sony Disk would work in a Sony machine.
    Anyone have any ideas?
I'm ready to beat my head against a wall.

Disk Utility works fine with my external LaCie drive. I have encoded several projects in iDVD as disc images and then burned them to DVDs. However, I use Toast primarily and have used Toast 5, 6 and 7 over the past 2 years. In Toast, select the copy option. Select the tab that gives you the expaned options and select disc image. Then simply drag your disc image into the Toast window. I have experienced no problems playing any of the DVDs in my home machines.

You can always build a Flash "DVD". Other than that you may be looking in the wrong place. Microsoft has neatly avoided any MPEG-2/DVD licensing and merely uses the respective libraries of otehr DVD software on your system, so when no such thing is installed, it never works.

  • DVDs not playing since Yosemite upgrade; some background information

    Hello there!
Since we have upgraded one of the MacBookPro's to Yosemite, it has stopped playing DVDs. Actually, it does not mount them at all, while it plays CD (original and copies) without a problem.
So when inserting a CD, it gets mounted: you can see it in Finder and also appears in the /volumes folder. When you insert a DVD, the drives spins, but the disk does not get mounted, it does not appear in Finder, nor can any program (DVD player, VLC) find it.
I have done the usual rounds of PRAM and SMC resets, without any improvement. I have also used DiskUtility to check/repair permissions as well, no resolution here either.
When I use an external DVD drive on the Yosemite, it generates the same symptoms as well: CDs mount and play, DVD's don't, so I don't think that the drive itself have given up, it is a software issue.
I have checked in DiskUtility the information, and this has provided some revealing clues:
On the laptops where DVDs play normally, DiskUtility says (select the disk and click the blue 'i' info button on the top of the window) that the DVD has a so-called Universal Disk Format (UDF) file format.
Under Yosemite the same DVD has the Windows NT Filesystem G3 file format, it does not mount or play at all...
I suspect that the faulty file system assignment (the failure to recognize the proper DVD format) prevents the mounting and the playback.
Do other people with DVD playback issues see the same?
Does anybody know how to fix this? Is there a way to change some settings to get the proper DVD format recognized by the system?
Or the only option is to send few thousands of emails to Tim Cook to get this fixed?
    Let me know...

Some updates to the technically more adept:
    1. All commercial DVDs (at least those in house) give the same filetype issue (not recognizing DVD as a DVD, but as a Windows filesystem) in Yosemite.
    2. I have also looked at the console error messages (although it does not tell me much, but maybe somebody can decipher it) upon inserting a DVD:

  • DVD not playing, I get the error message No title

I cut my HDV project on FCP 6, then used compressor to compress 1 pass , 90 minutes. Once compressed I used Studio Pro 4 to make a simple no menu DVD. When I put the DVD in my player it will not play and I get the error message on the TV screen " no title "

I have successfully authored DVD's in the past, just now it is not working.
Did you created a HD DVD by a chance? HD DVDs will play only in your Mac and not at all in standard DVD players.
    Hope that helps !

  • DVDs not playing: disc drive problem or something else?

I see that many problems occurr in regards to HP laptops and playing discs. I have recently encountered this problem myself.
    My discs will appear when I put them in the drive and ask to be played;
I open it with Windows Media Player
It glitches for a little while, usually shows a picture or two from the movie I'm trying to play
Sometimes brings me to the menu of the disc....
But continues to glitch and refuses to play the way it usually used to.
(I've also tried to play them in HP Medias\Smart, etc. but still no go)
In terms of CDs.. I used the disc drive to put music from CDs onto my itunes. The computer wouldn't actually play the music but the music did transfer successfully onto my ipod...
What I'm getting from this is that the drive is still reading the discs, in some small way, but it can't register them enough to play them properly on the computer.
I've tried many suggestions I've found through other forums of people with similar problems but nothing has worked so far. It's been a few monhts now and I'm pretty bummed that I still can't watch my DVDs when I'm laying in bed.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

I do not see a mention of the model of computer or the version of Windows, so a general response would be to download VLC player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
If that will not play it (either music or video), then there is probably a hardware failure.
Return with model of computer and Windows OS version.

  • Dual Layer DVDs not playing in DVD players...

We have burned dual layer DVDs straight from DVD Studio Pro 4 and also from Toast 7.0 - they all play on our Macs but do not play in any of the DVD players that we have here on sight. Am I missing something or is it typical that the dual layer burned disc is not supported on a standard player? Thanks.

Currently I have Memorex DVD+R DL
I hate to say this, but there are a number of reports about inconsistency with Memorex DVD5 and DVD9 blank media.
Is there a chance that you could move to a different brand?
Toast, I believe, burns in a way that tricks players into seeing a DVD5 disc. Try to burn from it, rather than from DVD SP.
Also, try some better brands, ie Verbatim or even Sony.
    best wishes
