Networking with an old Windows computer

I recently bought an iMAC with Snow Leopard and an Airport Extreme with "n" wireless. Along with the iMAC, I have networked a computer running Vista, 2 computers running XP, and an old computer running Windows 2000. My configuration includes a Linksys 8-port workgroup hub, which is what I used before I upgraded to the AE (I had a Linksys router).
I have 2 problems that I'm trying to resolve:
1. The computer running Windows 2000 doesn't connect to the internet consistently. If I replace the AE with my old Linksys router, it works fine.
2. Ports 5 through 8 on the hub doesn't seem to work.
Would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

Hi RichYan33;
How about some more details here?
Like you say your G4 will not start, exactly what does it do?
You say your G3 is very old but more important would be to tell us the model number and any other details you are able to find out about it.
With additional information we might be able to help you.

  • Networking with a old windows 95 pc

I recently had to wipe my computer at work (g4 tower) off and start again with tiger. Before I had classic installed and now I do not. I need to connect to an old windows 95 computer to drop files on. Before I would have to open classic and go to the chooser and select it from there. I can see it under the servers now but when I try and connect to it it says:
This file menu uses an incompatible version of the AFP Protocal. You cannot connect to it.
I do not use classic for anything other than this and it seems like there must be some way to get it to work other than that.
    Thanks in advance

We have a Linux box that runs a version of AFP that is not compatible with 10.4. 10.3.9 clients also have issues connecting. You may have to install Classic again to connect to this Windows 95 machine. All you need for Classic is a copy of the System Folder from a working OS9.2 machine.
I don't know any other way around it. AFP has changed several times and may eventually go away.

  • I have a macbook pro running 10.6 Snow Leapord, is there a way to split the screen like I could with my old windows computer? So I can watch or surf on one and another task on the other?

My laptop a macbook pro is my only connection with the outside world, I would like to be able if possible to watch or stream video content to my bigscreen tv as I easily can via the 1080 connection available on the two of them.
But I would like to be able to keep the video playing on the external TV screen and use the computer screen to view other content on the web simultainously is that macbook pro posterous or MB Propetually possible?
Any other part of this post below is 100% unnessisary and invalid with relation to my posted request for help leading to any answers resolving my situation thanks. Have a wonderful full life always with respect for self and all that is creation.
***********************************Excuse the added little incorperation of incredably creative crud keeping it clean but cra? with a P was ment to fit.
Please just open your heart and help a Lep, Snow Lepord that is with down syndrom operating it thats me!
There are many endless things life has to offer, but only for those able mentally to perform the details involved with the task, ask Jesus he tryed teaching others how to walk on water but they persisted with leaving it up to figments of heavenly spiritual imagination, I guess maybe he made a bad choice with his teachers he intended on taking it to spread among the others throughout the world?

With the external screen connected and turned on, open the Displays pane in System Preferences. On the screen containing your menu bar, you should now see a Displays preference dialog box with an "Arrangement" tab in it. Click the Arrangement tab. Uncheck the box for "Mirror Displays," or make sure it is already unchecked. In the image within the preferences dialog box you should see two adjoining blue rectangles representing your two screens. A white bar on one representes the menu bar and indicates that that is the primary display. The larger rectangle represents your TV screen. If it's on the right side of the smaller rectangle representing your MBP's screen, then dragging a window off the right side of the built-in screen will move the window onto the TV.
Now open any application window — a web browser window, for example — and drag it by its title bar to move it off the edge of your built-in screen onto the TV screen. Got that? You can do the same thing with any other window, including a DVD Player or VLC window containing a movie that you want to watch.
Things to note: In this dual-display mode, which is called Extended Desktop mode, the menu bar and Dock will always appear on only one of the screens, and you can choose which one they appear on by dragging the white bar representing the menu bar from one rectangle to the other in the System Prefs > Displays > Arrangement tab. You can also set the resolutions of the two screens independently of each other. The highest available resolution on each screen will always provide the sharpest image.

  • HT1420 I recently got a new operating system on my two-year old windows computer, but itunes says that I need to authorize my computer and I already have authorized five computers.  I think I should deauthorize all but does that deauthorize my ipad and ip

I recently had a new operating system installed on my two-year old windows computer.  iTunes wants me to authorize my computer (again) and then says that I already have five computers authorized.  Should I deauthorize all?  Would that affect my iPad and iPhone?  I may have old, non-functioning computers that are still authorized and should be removed.

Your past purchases are not on the computer.   By choosing download all, those purchases will download to the computer.
Once authorized to your iTunes account you can control the computer.
When syncing the iPad the first time you will get the warning " this iPad is synced with another computer, syncing will erase all contents and replace with the contents of this computer"
Say yes, this is what you wan to do.

  • Can I extend my wireless network with my old Airport?

Can I extend my wireless network with my old Airport? I have the airport extreme 802.11n & my old Airport (translucent white) base station. Can I mix the two to expand my range?

No problem; ask as many questions as you need to.
How do I reconfigure the Snow as a bridge to allow the AEBSn to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for the entire network?
I don't have a Snow to verify this, but it should be similar to the later base stations when using the AirPort Admin Utility.
To set up the Snow base station as a bridge, either connect to the Snow's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the Snow, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility (located in the \Applications\Utilities folder), make these settings:
    Network tab
    o Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
    o Apply the new setting.

  • I purchased a new Windows 8 PC. I have used and continue to use Outlook 2010 for my calendar. With my old Windows 7 PC and Outlook 2010, my calendar sinked properly with my Iphone 5. Now with the new Windows 8 PC, it does not. Help!

I purchased a new Windows 8 PC and I use Outlook 2010 for my calendar. With my old Windows 7 PC and Outlook 2010, my calendar would sync with my Iphone 5, but with the new Windows 8 PC and Outlook 2010, it does not, and I can't figure out how to snyc them. The emails from Outlook 2010 sync, but the calendar does not. Help! Thanks.

Easy solution for restoring lost calendar informaiton, thank goodness.  On your iPhone, go to settings, then to iCloud.  If your Calendar selection is turned off,  turn it on.  Your info should restore.  If your Calendar selection is turned on, then turn it off.  Choose to save calendars when asked.  After it shuts the Calendar off, turn it back on.  Your info should be restored.
Thank you to Apple support for walking me through this.  Shame on you Apple for not just telling people about this easy fix rather than making us go through all of this pain and worry.

On windows load the airport utility .. latest correct version as possible.. there is no windows 8 but win7 works after a fashion.
Make sure the TC is using SMB compatible names.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Type the name directly into windows explorer.
    \\TCname or \\TCIPaddress
If no luck turn off all the firewalls.. internal windows plus security software plus whatever other gargyoles and other rubbish AV software you have running.
Ensure windows is able to at least ping the TC by IP address and name..
Use the utility in windows to set file sharing to guest account on with full read and write access.. and set workgroup to WORKGROUP.

  • Can I use my macbook as an airport for my old windows computer?

I have an old windows computer and it doesn't have wireless capabilities is it possible to plug an Ethernet cord into my macbook to my pc and use some kind of program on my macbook to access the internet on my pc? I'm sure the answer is probably no but I might as well try.

OK, I followed the instructions and I got an internet connection on my PC! But then I restarted my PC after installing antivirus software and now I don't get an internet connection. It shows the internet as connected but when I try to load google or update my computer it gives me an error saying I have no internet connection. Any suggestions?

  • Old Windows computer problem

I have an old windows 98 operating system without internet connection, and I lost the cd for installing the iPod mini. Can I download all the software needed to connect it to my computer(including USB 2.0) and put it onto a cd?
(I want to use a different computer for my iPod.)

Well, if your Windows 98 computer does not have internet connection, how can you download the software needed?
The softwares you need are iTunes and the iPod software updater. If you can download them then of course you can burn them to CD.

  • IPhone as a modem on old Windows computer

When in Stockholm I have access to an elder Windows computer wit XP. I want to use my iPhone 3GS as a modem instead of transporting my own mac from home. I heard I just needed to install iTunes on the Windows computer, but the latest version is to refined. I found iTunes 8 on the Apple support pages, but the download button wasn't linked anywhere.
If iTunes 8 for Windows would be all I need - where do I get it?
