New External DVD Issues

New Computer:  HP Envy m6 Notebook PC
New External DVD Drive:  LG SP60
System:  Windows 8
Issue:  I place a DVD movie into external drive and there is no "auto play" function and no queue for me to start or play the DVD movie.
I have properly installed the external drive.  I have used the drive to install other items including my printer.  So it is not a mechanical or core function issue with the drive.
I was "forced" to download Cyberlink Media Suite; however, there is no button or queue to click to watch the DVD in the drive.  All items are related to burning a DVD.
I have tried several other DVDs that are in excellent condition on a totally separate device.  So I know it is not a DVD issue.
In the "my computer" it shows that there is a movie but it also shows that there are 3 main files, all with additional subfiles.  None look like they are "clickable" to play the movie.
I am searching for a simple one to two click process to play a DVD--not a process that requires several subscreen maneuvers.
Windows Media Player does not recognize the DVD movie either.
Help please . . . .

Hi,
I would not allow external USB devices to run Auto Play because virus can come in to play. For Windows 8, WMP is not a good product to play DVD. The DVD Player on CyberLink suite should play DVD's for you. You can also use a free product called vlc, which can play nearly all video formats.

  • Add new external DVD burner

    Hi there -
I just bought a new USB 2.0 external DVD burner and didn't notice until I got home that it has no Mac compatible software. No problem, I thought, my Mac can detect this puppy! Unfortunately, it does not appear that this is the case. If I insert a DVD, it occasionally pops up a window saying that I've inserted a blank DVD, and what do I want the computer to do. If I tell it open iDVD, it tells me I don't have the appropriate hardware. If I tell it to open disk utility, it tries and then freezes the program.
Anyone have suggestions? If I don't figure it out, I can return it, but have to decide this week.

    Return it.

  • Can I install my OS on new external dvd/cd drive

My hard drive died at the same time as my internal cd DVD drive. So I'm thinking of buying the OWC Mercury Pro Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Pioneer DVR-218L
External DVD/CD Writer (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MRF82SD22B/) but need to know if it's going to work automatically. Obviously I can't install it if my OS isn't even installed!

You can't boot the computer from a external DVD drive.
If you can find another model Mac just like yours, then c boot off your installer disk and HFS+ format a external drive and install OS X onto it, you can take that and hold option boot the sick Mac from.
Also once you get the internal drive replaced, you can use that external drive to Carbon Copy Clone the OS right onto the internal drive, no need for a internal DVD drive replacement, then you can use the external DVD drive.

  • Adobe Elements catalog backup fails after 3 discs.  Message says something wrong with dvd writer.  I bought an external dvd burner and changed disc brands, still the same results.

Full backup of catalog stops after three discs.  I have changed disc brand and added a new external dvd burner but still get the same results.  What is wrong?

If you have the hard drive space, see if you can complete a back up to the hard drive instead. If that works successfully, it could be a buffer or caching issue with the burner. It could be running out of space because it is not clearing after each disk burn.

  • Installing External DVD Burner, please help!

I've been trying all day to install my new External DVD Drive; it's an LG GE20 that SAYS it's Mac compatible, yet comes with no usable installation software, only a disc for Windows. I hooked it up and powered it on, put in the Windows install disc and it reads, but I cannot install anything. I'm sure there's drivers I need to be able to use the drive, but I've been scouring the net for hours trying to find a way to install this burner and the software it has on the disc onto my Macbook, and I read that there can also be problems getting lightscribe to work. If someone can guide me through installing this drive and getting it to work, I would be very appreciative.

the LG doesn't list Mac OS X as a supported OS for the GE20LU. but I'd be surprised if it doesn't work. In the off chance it doesn't you may want to check out toast.

  • External DVD caddy for probook 4530

I have a probook 4530.  I am adding an SSD drive and replacing my DVD device with the internal HDD as a secondary drive.  What I would like to do is get an external DVD caddy and place the removed DVD device in the caddy and connect via USB.  Is this possible?

    Hi,
Well, buy a new external DVD/CD writer now for under $50 is much better than recycle the old one. Anyway, if you wish, you can try something like this:
       http://compare.ebay.com.au/like/360317300092?ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes
For my testing, I bought an external burn-everything Pioneer for $119. It's very slim.

  • External dvd/cd drive for my imac

    hey,
hopefully someone will be able to help me out with this little problem. after like 2.5-3 years my imac's dvd/cd drive has stopped reading disks. i'll insert the disc and it'll act like it's trying to read it and then after about 30 seconds to a minute it'll spit the disc back out. i'm definitely out of warranty and wanted to know if anyone could recommend a new external dvd/cd drive(?) or burner(?) or whatever it is i actually need to be able to play, upload, and burn dvds and cds. i'd rather not have a new internal drive installed and i'd prefer to just buy an external.
sorry if i sound computer illiterate with this post but for the most part i really am. thanks again for anyone that can help me out.

    Hello and welcome to discussions,
These drives seem to be well regarded by many here...

Congratulations on the new Mini. Are you saying you tried burning and it does not play, or do you want to burn it only for the computer to be able to play it?

  • How do I burn a DVD on my new iMac to play on external DVD player

I have a new iMac at work (3.5 GHz Intel Core i7), running on OS X Yosemite, and I'm trying to figure out how to burn a DVD that can be played on an external DVD player. I have a disc burner connected, but just noticed that iDVD (the way I used to burn video files) is no longer part of my installed applications.
    Thanks for any help.
    JC

If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Softwareor eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
If you're creating a slideshow in iPhoto and want to add it to an iDVD project export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • I am a new Macbook Pro user (just the 13" baby).  I have an external DVD drive and would like to load onto my Mac and then onto my iPad - how do I do this?

I am a new MacBook Pro user - actually totally new to the Mac goodies and am having a bit of trouble sorting out how to get a DVD from my external DVD player onto the Mac and then onto my iPad (I travel a lot!).  I have been a windows user for many years and am still trying to learn all the bits and pieces.  I have VLC on this - don't have any trouble playing a DvD, just don't know how to do the rest i.e. rip it, change to an MP4 and get it onto my other device.  Please help!  You are more than likely to see many more "how do I do this" on here!

program called MDRP to rip it......  then use Wondershare to convert it, also Iskysoft video converter is an option.
You dont have to put it ON the Ipad, once on the Mac, you can Stream it wifi to the Ipad using the $2 program called VLC STREAMER (not VLC, but streamer made by VLC),.... best APP for your Ipad to stream videos from your MAC to your Ipad.
    A direct DVD to MP4 converter : http://www.xilisoft.com/dvd-to-mp4-converter-mac.html

  • On a new Mac how to transfer video from an external DVD to an external hard rive

I want to transfer my family videos from an external DVD player attached to my new mac to an external hard drive for back up purposes.  What do I do?  Thanks.

It is an external DVD drive connected by USB.
Then you can copy your DVDs using Disk Utility.
Insert your DVD in the drive.  If DVD player opens, close it.  Then open Disk Utility.  (Disk Utility comes with all Macs; it's located in the /Applications/Utilities folder.)
In Disk Utlity, select your DVD disk in the pane on the left side.  Then do File > New Disk Image from (title of your DVD disk).
Then give a name to the copy you are about to create and select a save location.
In "Image Format" select DVD/CD Master  (very important!)
Set encryption as NONE  (also very important!)
    Then Save
This will create a disk image file on your hard drive.  It's a duplicate of your DVD.  You can burn this image to other DVD media and/or play it on your computer same as if it were an actual DVD disk.
Note: this will not work with commercial DVDs due to their copy protection.

  • New External Battery/Sleep Issues

I have a weird one that I can't figure out. I have been using a new external battery for about a week (the old one wouldn't stay charged for more than an hour). Today my computer kept putting itself to sleep (sleep light flashing and nothing else working - not even power button) and not starting up again unless I unlugged it from the wall, took out the battery and then reset the PMU. I took out the new battery and put in my old one and so far so good. I wonder if it really is the new battery causing these issues or not. Any thoughts?

I'm having this same random sleep issue too!! It's been happening to me a little after I installed Leopard - but I'm not implying that Leopard is causing the issue. My PowerBook still has the original battery. The battery has not shown any indication that it refuses to accept a charge, nor is there any physical damage to the battery or the connectors.
*I have found an easy way to wake the computer when it does go into sleep.* I used to take out the battery, unplug the power cord if it was plugged in, press the power button and reset PRAM just as an added measure. But when you see it is starting to put itself to sleep, let it do its thing... don't try to stop it. When the white sleep light finally starts glowing, tap the space bar (probably any key will do) just ONCE. Sometime it will bring it back for a second and go right back to sleep mode, in which case I just repeat the steps above. Sometimes it'll last me a few minutes. If it does this repeatedly, then after pressing the space bar (after the sleep light starts glowing), I have noticed a delay in it waking up...I can press the space bar and it will either come back right away, or it may take like 30 seconds until it responds. Through trial and error, I've found that if I press any key more than once, I run the risk of it not coming out of sleep mode period....then I have to go through the whole reset process with the PRAM and all.
    Hope maybe that helps someone
Has anyone kind of figured out what this could be the cause of? My laptop gets kind of hot sometimes, but it doesn't always force itself into sleep mode when its hot - so it may or may not be a over heating issue perhaps?

I have a Canon DC310 camcorder that uses mini dvd's and doesn't have the ability to connect to a computer.  How can I get my new Imac to read these dvd's?  Will the mini dvd adapter work or do I need to purchase an external dvd rom device?  Which device works well with the Mac?  Do I need anything else to get the dvd material onto my mac?  Thanks!!

No DV port in camcorder.  Just a yellow AV port/hole.  I did find a Canopus ADVC110 device in a box that was bought several years ago to convert VHS tapes onto DVD's.  Can I use this with a Mac?  Could I connect a dvd player to the Canopus and transfer the disks onto my Mac?  Or, connect the camcorder via AV port to the Canopus and that to the Mac and transfer that way?  Thanks again!
