New Quad Processors for Pro Use

Hey guys, I have a question for those of you who have bought one of the new Quad Processor PowerPC G5's. I work at a Graphic house doing professional Advertising and Marketing. So...my questions is really should we wait till next year when Adobe starts supporting the Intel Based chips (and by that time the Intel Based PowerMac's will be on the market) or do we go with the Quads now. I'd like some feedback from people who have quads now and are using programs like Quark,Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and similiar programs.

Right up my alley! I have a new Power Quad at home and love it!!! In a professional sense it comes down to how bad does your business need them NOW. If you absolutely can't wait these Power Quads are awesome and will be able to stay current and quite effective with the uncoming evolution of software for many years. If you can wait around a year I would opt for that. I personally had to ugrade now and I have no reget. From a business point of view it would be a better long term chioce to wait for the switch. Keep in mind thought that just because the Macs have switched (and the high end Macs won't go that route for awhile) there will be a wait for all the applications to reprogram and debug and add to the cost of the switch. Many current apps will be able to run on the Intel units but until they are written to run natively there will be a translation step that will make many of these apps useable on the IntelMacs but much slower until they run natively. Guess it boils down to how bad does your business need 'em now. One other note - the Quad is a bit quicker overall with the basic graphics stuff you mentioned, and that do at work, only scratches the surface of the capabilities of the multi-processor set-up of the Quads. The video and audio rendering is where these baby's REALLY save you hours of thime. Happy shopping!

  • New iMac for Pro Use

When we replaced our last Pro Machine back in 2005 it was replaced with an iMac 20". Well we use it for Graphic Design and it served us well until the logic board failed. So we ordered a new i5 27" iMac. Anyone else use iMacs for pro Macs? We run Adobe creative suite 4, Freehand, Quark and office. Any issues with these apps running Snow leopard? Do you feel the performance of the iMac will do well with these apps?
By the way I found a place that repairs the logic boards in G5 imac so I removed and sent it out for repair. If all goes well this will be a nice hand me down for the kids. So far they love the G4 12" powerbook we handed down to them. 9 year old twins using macs which the prefer over the PC.

Sounds like you're on the track, I found a link from Apple that offers a competitive upgrade from Freehand to CS4 for $199. If your business is relying on it then that might be the road to take.
I've heard of some work arounds for your Laserwriter but not being a LW owner I don't have any experience. The good news is high quality Laser printers have come way down in price, I have 2 connected to my system (both HP's) that work great. The youngest one (Color LJ 2600N) is about 4 years old and works great as does my little black and white LJ 1012 which is my everyday work horse.
Another solution is HP has a new line of printers out that are inkjets but cost up to 50% less to operate than a laser and provides very high quality. If you at all interested the link is:

  • Why does FCP not use the quad Processors for rendering

Hi. I notice the other day when I renderd out a rather long project that FCP does not use all available processors. I notice on some effects that it uses the graphics card and non of the processors. It there a reason for this and is there a way to make better use of the quad core in rendering both audio and video files.
    Thanks

Good question. I've been asking around off forum looking for an answer too. Motion is a big one for me. I'd love to have it render out with all 4. But then again, it's not meant to be a render engine. Both FCP and Motion are now becoming more GPU intensive.
Now... COMPRESSOR uses all 4 at the same time.

  • Connecting new quad core macbook pro to external monitor

How would one go about connecting the new MacBook Pro to an external HD monitor? "The Apple Mini-DVI to DVI adapter is designed for use with the iMac (Intel Core Duo), MacBook, and 12-inch PowerBook G4." Does this mean it won't work with the quad core? I'd like to set up another monitor with my new 15 inch laptop and Screen Recycler isn't really doing the trick, tried with with a 24 inch imac and it was terrible quality. Please help, thanks.

I have a mid year 2010 17" MBP and needed to do the same thing.
I got a mini-DVI port adaptor to HDMI, and connected it to my stereo - so I could watch on big flat screen TV and hear 5.1 sound via surround speakers, works great.  I down load missed episodes of castle and stuff and watch them all in HD.  (Via ITUNES).
The catch, most mini port cables - do not carry both video and audio, even if HDMI and even if they say they do!  After buying the wrong cable at the local apple affiliate, I learned there are only two that did work.
(even thought the packaging said they carried sound, the cable in fact was not recognized by the sound drivers, so no sound through Mac X (Snow Leopard).  I got the second cable form Moshi, and it worked instantly.
    NO problems since, at all.
So does the port work with the quad duo core chip? Yes to I5, and yes to I7.  My IPAD has I5, and my MBP has I7. It's a dual core, virtual quad core, and it's works beautifully.

  • Creating DataSink after programming processor for another use

This is a new thread to discuss off-topic question from Re: JMF - Concurrent video feed and image capture
To summarize, I am trying to create a system that accesses frames coming off a processor, and detects motion from these frames. When motion is detected, it needs to record video. I have the two systems running independently. I can detect motion correctly and without issue, and I can also save a file using a live feed. But I am having problems putting them together when creating a DataSink to save the video. Right now, I receive this output whenever motion is detected and it tries to record:
Something is really wrong: the processor does not have an output DataSource
Failed to create a DataSink for the given output MediaLocator: file:mov.avi
    Relevant post from above thread:

Those two things seem to suggest the processor couldn't be realized, which generally means you've tried to transcode from one format to another format that isn't supported...
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/formats-138492.html
Additionally, the problem could be that "file:mov.avi" needs to be a URL, and you've given it a bad URL... that's perfectly valid input to the original program, but take a look at the createMediaLocator method...
    Specifically,
String file = "file:" + System.getProperty("user.dir") + File.separator + url;Note that it's giving it a full URL path to the file... so you need to do the same. The code is posted in the linked thread, so I won't post it again here and waste more space.
I'm pretty sure the problem lies either (as mentioned above) in that (1) I'm trying to transcode from one format to another; or (2) my process of creating and programming the processor to access frames coming off the camera, then trying to create a DataSink for video recording functionality is incorrect.
I have been working under the (tested) assumption that If I provide a string that is "file:mov.avi", the createMediaLocator() method will attempt to create a MediaLocator in the current directory. This is what I've been using to test video recording in a stand-alone manner, and it works just fine. Regardless, to test this more fully, I gave it a full path to the current directory being used, and I received the same error.
The first question I have, so that I can be sure my logic is correct, is what is the high-level method or process that I would need to go through in order to program the processor to access the frames, and then use it to create a DataSink that will be used later to record when motion is detected?

You can't create a DataSink for a Processor that's already processing... and depending upon how you're handling getting the frames from the processor, you may very well be disabling its ability to have an output... I've advised you not to do things the way you said you were doing them, but, I don't have any idea how your current set of code works.
There are a number of ways you could get such a system to work with custom components, but, they would all kind of depend on what you're doing.
Can you outline specifically what your current setup is, and exactly how it works?

  • 24" iMac for Good for Pro Use?

    Hi,
I am considering getting a 24" iMac. I would like to get a Mac Pro with a pro display but my budget does not stretch that far. I have no worries about the speed of the Duo 2 Core 2.4Ghz, my concern is about the DISPLAY. I am going to be working in Photoshop editing images. I am a professional photographer. I went to my local Apple Store and took a look and I did see on the 20" the gradient thing. On the 24" it looked better but with a flat grey background image it did look completely uneven.
Are these displays up to handing pro work? Does the glossy screens render colors badly, even after a calibration. How concerned should I be about this?
    Thanks,
    Martin.

I recently faced the same dilemma. I am also a pro photographer and need to have my monitor calibrated to my Epson 2200. I decided that the glare from the new IMAC LCDs was unacceptable and would make it difficult to edit my photos. In addition, the new glossy screens have more impact than the matte screens due to increased contrast and color saturation which would also make calibration difficult. About 4 weeks ago, I bought a white 24" previous generation IMAC with a matte screen since I didn't want to spend the additional money to buy a Mac Pro.
The screen on my new computer has a light to dark gradient going from left to right that is not optimal for photo editing. This seems to be a common issue on both the new aluminum 24" and the white 24" LCD screens. Hopefully Apple will come up with a fix for this issue.
The screen is also too bright but thats just another issue.

  • Considering Mac Mini for Pro use

    Hi.
I'm considering to buy a Mini for replacing my 400Mhz G4.
I mainly use Photoshop and Illustrator for drawing/coloring (large files, hi resolution and so).
I wanted to know if anyone uses a Mini for similar purposes and how well does the machine do. I'm pretty sure I'd definetly do better than my current G4, but anyway, I want to hear any comments about that.
If you wonder why I don't consider a MacPro, cost is the main reason, although I know it would be the best choice in the long term. But since I don't work with video or 3d apps, I guess a Mini would do well.
    Thanks in advance!

Some people claims Intel processors are way better than G5. Do you guys agree?
As an example, my G5 dual processor G5 powermac has a broadly similar overall performance to a 1.83 Core 2 Duo mini. The G5 gains in hard drive speed (because it has a 7200rpm unit over the mini's 5400rpm device) but the mini holds it's own, and in fact slightly betters, the DP G5 for CPU performance.
Going a bit further, my 2.4GHz C2D iMac is roughly twice the overall performance of the G5 DP Mac.
It woul;d be hard to draw any conclusion but that the Intel C2D processors are very fast, and certainly have more overall potential than the G5 CPUs - particularly when you consider heat. G5 systems run very hot indeed, and the G5 powermacs for example have very complex cooling systems to help handle that. Intel C2D processors run much cooler by comparison, meaning that they can be put into smaller enclosures with less cooling - or be driven much harder.
I've been searching for G5 Power macs for sale, as well, but I would like to make the best choice in terms of performance and also, thinking of future software, OS, and so.
My take on this is very simple really - that as much as the G5 systems are incredibly powerful in their own right, they're a computing dead-end now. As macOS and software develops, there isn't going to be any appreciable effort to produce software that is optimized for these processors. Indeed, increasingly a likelihood that software will not be written to run on them at all. That doesn't mean these systems are fit for nothing - on the contrary. What it means is that if you have needs that are met by current software that runs on a G5 system, the G5 is very capable and has the advantage of being expandable. However, if you are looking ahead at possible uses into the future, you really couldn't consider a G5 to be a good investment for the future in comparison to an Intel-based Mac. Bear in mind too that future MacOS releases are almost certainly to be heavily biased towards Intel hardware.
Since I own both PPC (G4 and G5) and Intel Macs, I can tell you that in practice my Intel systems get far more use for far more intensive applications. That's the platform I would suggest makes the most sense, unless you can get hold of a DP G5 for very little money, and not only have the software you need for it already, but also know that over time, you are not likely to branch into other uses where software choices may be constrained.
The very fact an Intel mini can run Windows if needed (either via Boot Camp or virtualization) makes this platform a more attractive proposition to many.

  • Needing a laptop - go with Powerbook G4 or new Duo Processor MacBook Pro?

    Hi,
I have a 17" iMac and am needing a laptop for practical reasons. What are the benefits of staying with the powerbook vs going with the new MacBook Pro?
I will be running Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign - as well as digital photography and the Internet. I understand the MBPro has some issues with the Adobe software but they'll probably come out with an update soon...
I'm just looking for advice. Should I stick with the tried and true Powerbook and wait for a further generation MB? I am loving the built in camera on the MB, but will the possible headaches outweigh the good??
Any advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance!
    Tracy

I was ready to get a MacBook Pro, until I started reading about the heat/whine/build-quality issues in the MBP forum here. So, I'm holding off until these issues are resolved, hopefully, in the near future.
You may want to look at the 15-in. and 17-in. PB refurbs available in the online Apple Store. Although refurbs can be a crapshoot, my wife and daughter each got a nice 15-inch 1.67gHz DL SD. And, my daughter lucked out with a single 1GB memory stick in hers...a $200 upgrade. (Note: My son and I were not so lucky with our PB refurbs; we got refunds due to screen hash.)
Also, if you go the refurb route, your company/organization my have an affiliated online Apple Store that offers rebates on the PowerBooks...$200 on the 15-inch PB...$250 on the 17-in. model, both 1.67gHz DL SD until May 7.

  • Is Photos for Pro use?

Perhaps it is just me, but I find Photos to be a serious step backwards.  All I wanted added to Aperture or iPhoto was the ability to select different editing software as can be done in Lightroom.  I like the improved Facial Rec, but the functionality has been totally destroyed.  The Flickr & Facebook connectivity was much better than Photos.  If you are using Aperture or Lightroom, in other words a pro, this is not, in my opinion, the photo managing software for you.  It seems Photo is for the consumer market; not the prosumer, or Pro market.

Well you can argue feature by feature, but the editing tools are richer in Photos, the whole iCloud Library and cross-devices stuff is also a big step up on iPhoto. There are losses too - Places, metadata display and so on. It certainly seems to be built with an iPhone shooter in mind, but that is the most popular camera these days. So for me, there's little of use, but I do think the 'replacement for iPhoto' is a defendable position.
But make no mistake, they have done away with Aperture. They've just decided that they're not working that end of the market anymore. Time to look at apps like Lightroom, Capture One and so on.

  • Is mainstage good for pro use?

Posted this on the Logic discussion thread...
Playing night after night with mainstage, I always get some audio glitches.
    Here is my setup:
mac mini server i7 quad core
    8 gigs Ram
    Minstage 2.2
    Omnisphere 1.5
    Kontakt 5.0.2
    RME Fireface UC
    Buffer @ 128 samples
    Samplerate 48K
Any tips to tweak the Mac mini?
I have all audio files onthe second HD
energy saver, HD never goes to sleep
    MainStage, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I have the same mac as you, with 8 GB also. I am using a MOTU Ultralite mk3 for audio inputs.
The only other difference is, I am not using Kontakt or Omnispherel: primarily Apple plug-ins, Toontrack Superior Drummer, and a few wave plugs. I am using a buffer size of 64, but 44.1 sample rate.
This is the most stable set up I have had, with no drop outs, glitches, crashes .... all is good. I would think you should be able to get good results also.
I suggest you take things out of the equation, one at a time, and see if you can isolate where the problem is coming from. Some suggestions:
    - are all drivers and plug-ins current (especially RME)
    - run MS in 32 bit if you are using any 32-bit plug-ins (the bridge can cause problems)
    - if you have 64-bit plugs, try running MS in 64-bit
    - try running without Kontakt for awhile, then without Ominishpere for awhile. Any changes?
    - try 16-bit, 44.1 kHz. Good enough for live performance, less CPU.

  • Create new survey data for opportunity using abap code

    Hello to all,
    I have one requirement.
create survey data for given opportunity ID using abap code. or copy survey data from one opportunity to another opportunity using abap.
    any ideas..
    many thanks
    Babu

    Hello Babu,
You can do this through the CRM_ORDER_MAINTAIN FM, this is the generic FM to edit any transaction in CRM.
The FM contains an internal table IT_SURVEY that must be filled. Actually, this table will only contain a reference to the (completed) survey, it doesn't store the data of the survey itself.
For some example coding, take a look at the SrvTSurvey.do controller. If you want to see what data is stored in the IT_SURVEY table, create a transaction and attach a completed survey to it (you can easily do it in the standard views of the webclient) and take a look at the survey structure in the CRM_ORDER_READ FM/Report.
Let me know if you need more guidance,
    Reward points if useful,
    Regards,
    Joost

May mean you are locked out of the account. Contact iTunes.

  • My phone number appears on my daughters iTouch and she can receive my text messages.  If I need to creaye a new user account for her itouch, can i use the same iTunes account or do i need to create a new iTunes account?

My phone number appears in my daughters list of acceptable numbers to receive texts or messages on her iTouch.
I sync her iTouch on my iTunes account.
Do I need to create a separate iTunes account for her to prevent this from happening?  or can i use the same itunes account and just create a separate a differne user name for the same itunes account?
If i need to create a separate iTunes account, how can i save her data and game levels?

    I recommend that you
Create a NEW account/ID for her using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before.
Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card
Use the new ID on her iPod but only for:
    Settings>Messages>Send and Receive

Continue to use the same/common Apple ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores so you can share purchases.

  • New Quad vs 2007 Dual Core 3.0 Gigahertz

I had an early 2007 Dual Core 3.0 gh Mac Pro with 12 gb of ram. Thanks to a burglar it is gone. Poof.
Which of the 3 new quad core Mac Pro's would be an equivalent? My dad needs to duke it out with State Farm... CPU speed vs 8 Core using Adobe Photoshop 7 (I think) and Adobe Premiere Pro CS3?

You might want to also take into note, that 2009 MPs are running DDR3 memory, vs. DDR2 on the 2008. Speed is faster on DDR3, and has more bandwidth.
There have been a lot of discussions on the DDR3 implementation; whether its better performance wise to install in "threes" (triple-channel) or just to install "bigger amounts" of ram in dual channel. I.e. 12 GB vs. 16GB. Apparently it just depends on what type of work you're doing. In some cases "more" ram will benefit you; in more intensive app work triple-channel w/less GB will benefit better.
Also the Quad 2009 can take up to 16 GBs (still little pricey though...)

  • Spawning new entry processors from within an existing entry processor

Is it possible / legal to spawn a new entry processor (to operate within a different cache) from within an existing entry processor.
E.g we have a parent and a child cache, We will receive an update of the parent and start an entry processor to do this. Off the back of the parent update we will also need to update some child entries in another cache and need to start a new entry processor for the child entries. Is it legal to do this?

    Hi Ghanshyam,
yes, in case of (a), you would be mixing different types in the same cache. There is nothing wrong with that from Coherence's point of view, as long as all code which is supposed to access such objects in their deserialized form is able to handle this situation.
This means that you need to use special extractors for creating indexes, and you need to write your filters, entry processors and aggregators appropriately to take this into account. But that's all it means.
The EntryProcessor on the child could be invoked, so long as there are more service
threads configured. This allows retaining partition affinity. I don't think this is technically
illegal. It is problematic, as invoking an entry-processor from another entry-processor in the same cache service can lead to deadlock/livelock situations. You won't find it out in a simple test as you get an exception or not.
But even if it is technically not guarded against, firing a second entry-processor consumes an additional thread from the thread-pool. Now if you get to a situation when all (or at least more than half of the thread-pool size) of your entry-processors try to fire an additional entry-processor, and there are no more threads in the thread-pool, then some or all would be waiting for a thread to be available, and of course none would be available, because there are not enough single-thread entry-processors to leave to get a thread to everyone.
However, none of them can back off as all are waiting for the fired entry-processor to complete. Poof, no processing is possible on your cache service.
Another problematic situation which can arise if entry processors are fired from entry processors is that your entry-processors may deadlock on entries (entry processors executing on some entries and trying to execute on another entry on which another entry processor executes and also tries to execute on the first entry). In this case the entry-processors would wait on each other to execute.
No code running in the cache server invoked by Coherence is supposed to access a cache service from code running in the threads of the same cache service, except for a couple of specifically named operations which only release resources but not consume additional new ones.
    Best regards,
    Robert
