New to mdm management

Hi,
I have recently taken on two School's IT management and they have a number of Apple devices.  THey currently do very little in terms of managing these devices and this poses a big risk to data loss.  More importantly, they can not do anything with lost or stolen devices.
I'm aware of a number of MDM platforms on the market, I have in fact had experience with Good and Mobileiron but I'm wanting to do something cheaply if possible.
I know Profile manager can do what I have mentioned above and much more, but I don't yet have an Apple computer to do this.  Can someone explain what device is best to use (iMac/Macbook)  Does the device need to be on all the time with the same network address? 
I was planning to run this from home and manage both schools devices, just using seperate profiles for each school.

Does not matter as any mac will do. IMO the answer to your second question rules out a laptop as it would be a poor use of an expensive portable device more suited for a different purpose. Most people in your situation tend to go for a MacMini. It's cheaper than the other two and has a very small form factor. Ideally buy two and set them up in a redundant configuration.

As you know Apple's MDM is called Profile Manager. You get Profile Manager with OS X Server. OS X Server is an App and not an OS. That said it should still be treated as a Server with all that that means. A Server should have a fixed location within a network it resides in. It should be accessible by the devices you're trying to manage which implies a fixed IP address and always on availability. Beyond the fixed IP address nothing will work well (if at all) without a properly defined hostname and a DNS server that can resolve that name properly. This can't be emphasised enough and is crucial. Get that part right at the beginning and everything else will 'just work.' Your school's IT Management should have already done this anyway although depending on their understanding of what DNS is it may prove a potential stumbling block?
You can access the PM web-based management portal from anywhere you like. However this will mean configuring whatever firewall the school is using. For example allowing VPN access from whatever computer you're using at your home - Mac or PC. Does not matter which as it is via a web browser and any web browser will do - or configuring the school's external domain to do the same.
You should also look beyond PM. PM won't back-up the devices for you. If iOS devices are involved you should consider using a combination of iTunes and/or iCloud and/or Apple Configurator to back-up any locally stored data. I would steer clear of this and use something like WebDAV Navigator or Foldr instead.
For OS X devices network logins would be the way to go. Student data would be stored on a drive attached to your Server. This data would in turn be backed up by whatever backup solution the school is using. Does not matter whether the network is based Microsoft's Active Directory or Apple's Open Directory. I would also consider using DeployStudio, Munki and Apple Remote Desktop for a more rounded management/deployment approach that go far beyond what is available in PM alone.
It can be simple and straightforward and in practice it is as long as you know what you're doing and where the potential gotchas are. You may benefit from an experienced consultant coming in and advising/assisting you in the initial setup? It makes sense as using Apple devices in an enterprise network can be painful if the initial 'get-off-the-ground' phase is handled poorly.

    Because in R/3 side if i make these fields as grey out .It won't take input values while replicating data from MDM to R/3.so i could end up with idoc error.

  • A new Book: Color Management for Digital Photographers

    Ted Padova and Don Mason have published a new book: Color Management for Digital Photographers for Dummies (ISBN 978-0-470-04892-4).
    As the back cover of the manual states "This book is packed with examples to guide you through understanding color basics, correcting brightness and contrast, getting the exact tone and hue, and creating perfect prints - in full color, of course!" (with the tools available in PSE 4 and 5).
    I had the luck to benefit from the excellent experience and the gracious help of Don Mason for a color/brightness adjustment problem in a Dafodill photo that I did not know how to solve on my own. I look forward to learn much more from this book.

    Yes, I've tried all of the options: Printer manages color, PSE manages color. All are the same dark prints.
    On another conversation on this forum, I read the following. Very discouraging to think that Adobe knows of this problem but won't give me any tech support because too much time has lapsed.
    I don't know what "plugs" are--sounds like this user figured out a way around it.
    Any advice?

    Adobe has admitted that there is a color management issue with PSE 6 for Mac. I have an Epson R1900 and I am now getting acceptable color-managed prints by allowing the Epson Printer driver to manage color management (ie; color management in PSE 6 turned off). The Epson Photoshop Plug In also works well with PSE6 and ICC profiles; however, I have yet to solve 2 problems with this particular plug in: (1) How to get the program to capture 3rd party ICC profiles and (2) how to print borderless prints. If anyone has seen a user guide for this particular plug in, I would be grateful to know how to download it.

  • New to Worspace Management

    Hi ,
    I am new to Workspace Management (WM) and trying tolearn the cocept. I am responsible for designing an aplication. Does WM provide storage of data in three states ie PROPOSED, CURRENT and HISTORICAL? ( Any code/logic to support this concept is highly appreciated).
    Any of you have implemented Worspace? Does it grow very fast?, How about the performance?

    Hi Suhail,
    About data in three states ie PROPOSED, CURRENT and HISTORICAL, I think that you may say so. OWM has LIVE workspace, from where you can query current data; when people manipulate data in another workspace it works like a long transaction (changes are not visible in the LIVE workspace until you merge that workspace with LIVE) – PRPOSED data; when you enable versioning the schema tables you can chose to store all changes.
    OWM tables (_LT tables) may grow fast if you do a lot of updates because OWM needs to record every historical information.
    I thing that any solution that supports “storage of data in three states ie PROPOSED, CURRENT and HISTORICAL” is heavy in terms of performance. Considering this point, OWM seems to be have a very acceptable performance.

    There are adapters available that convert micro cards into fullsize ones.
    You will also need a USB card reader if you do not have one.

  • Cannot Share/Send Photo with MDM Managed Device

    When using any device that has an Exchange (ActiveSync) account created through an MDM product (in this case Barracauda MDM, but had the issue with Absolute's product as well), you cannot share (attach) any photo via email in the Photo app.  What appears is the Setup page for Mail requesting you to create a email account as if one doesn't exist.  (We do not allow any other accounts (i.e. Gmail, iCloud, etc.) to be created on our company owned devices).
    One can though "Insert Photo" when in the creation part of an email in the Mail app, but this allows only one photo to be inserted at a time.  As well it is not very intuitive as the user must know how to do this and it is on the part that is usually hidden on the contexual menu that you get to select/insert/etc. items in Mail.
    Not being able to send/share from the Photo app is very difficult and confusing for our users, any recommendations, fixes, etc.?
    Note:  It does work fine if you use an Exchange (ActiveSync) account manually setup on an iOS, but just not thru an MDM managed/setup Exchange (ActiveSync) account.

    I am very new to System Manager 2012, so I am seeking advise on how to best start my project. I read the initial part of the Getting Started guide ( http://technet.microsoft.com/library/dn235548.aspx ), but System Manager is a big product so I need
    to double check the direction I should take, based on my design requirements.
    So here is what I am trying to achieve in two bullet points:
    - I got my own monitoring system application that I can query via an API. The API is REST based (i.e. HTTP GET/POST operations) and I already wrote a Python script to query my API so I can export data and alerts from it.
    - I'd like to integrate the data/alerts coming from my own monitoring application into the Microsoft System center.
    Questions:
    1) in the first page of the Getting Started guide, I can see I am offered the option to download several evaluation virtual hard disks (e.g. App Controller, Operation Manager, Service Manager, Orchestrator, Virtual Machine Manager). Not sure which one I
    should use for what I am trying to achieve?
    2) depending on the component picked in point (1), what's the best documentation link to start studying how the Microsoft application works, and how to integrate the data coming from my API?
    3) is my Python script fine to run on the Microsoft Virtual Machine, in order to query my API and pass the data to the System Manager 2012?

    For monitoring purposes you should look into the Operations Manager product.

  • New iTunes for managing apps

    Dislaimer: I am NOT an experience iTunes user!
    Question: How do I see my devices in a way I can manage the apps on them in the new iTunes?
    Background:
    I updated my iTunes yesterday to 11.01.12, the "new, even better" one.
    I understand it makes my music experience that much better...but I don't really have any music.
    About the only thing I want to do with iTunes is see what apps I have, re-arrange them (from one screen to another on my actual device), etc.
    The main reason for this is that I'm trying to migrate from my iPod Touch 4 to iPhone 5, and for some reason, when I did the back-up, it only moved over native apps, not anything I'd downloaded. So I can drag and drop them from the apps screen when I can see my devices.
    But there's the rub. When I first plug in my devices (to my computer), I can see them. But as the new iTunes doesn't seem at all user-friendly to me, I can't figure out how to see the devices (and it won't show them unless I unlock them first with my PW..a problem I never had before! The first image below is what I see when I first plug them in (no idea why it only recognised one device this time, they both just got plugged in). If I click on the iPod button, sometimes it will take me to a screen where I can actually see what's on my iPod, but sometimes it just goes straight back to the list of Apps -- and I can no longer see how to get back to my device -- see in the second image, the button is gone!
    Is there a way to go back to an older version of iTunes?
    Or another place I can go in iTunes to see my devices when I want, without having to have them re-sync all the time?

    The problem occurs with every catalog.
    I have created a new catalog, but the same problems persists.
    The window to add photos is available.  The program just stops functioning.  If I click on "Fix", I am told to cancel the previous action, which was to add an album.
