Nexus 5K adding vlans

Hello,
I have the task of adding a new vlan (56) to our existing N5K's v1000 and 6513 core trunks
New vlans pop up frequently. My question is....
Is there a "global" command to add vlan56 to the trunks? on the N5K's?
I am trying to make this easier on me.
Currently I add per port-channel/trunk
Below is an output of 1 of my 4 N5K's...vlan56 needs to be added to all.
Thanks in advance!

What Nexus OS are you running. If you are running 5.x you might want to think of using port-profiles which should make it easier for you. Here is an example.
port-profile type ethernet test-profile
  switchport mode trunk
  switchport trunk allowed vlan 1-3
interface Ethernet1/11
  inherit port-profile test-profile

I have tested this issue on another 5548UP with L3 running the same NX-OS version and get the same problem. Show CDP from the switch is not discovering devices, but the neightbors can see the 5K in question. Reboot sometimes will fix it, but not always. I suspect a problem with the software since that doesn't happen in NX-OS 5.2. The one I am using is

  • Adding vlans to a trunk ...

[1] What is the allowed time duration between the two switches if we have added the vlans on one end of the trunk
and waiting to enter this on the other end of the trunk ?
[2] I understand if the vlans on the trunk are not the same, then there will be a problem. What would be the problem be and the reasoning behind it.
    Thank you.

I'll assume you are running transparent if you adding vlans on both ends . There is no time requirement other than you have to have the vlan that you manage the switch on both ends or otherwise you'll lock yourself out . If the vlans are not the same on both ends then the ones that are different will not be allowed across the trunk . The easiest way is to just allow everything initially then delete the vlans you don't need on the trunk one the link is up and you can manage the switch. If you are running client/server then you only have to make your changes on the server anyway.

  • Adding VLAN to Po-Group and OSPF routing what is the correct way?

    Hi Community,
I recently had an issue that brought down the links between a couple of switches...luckily this was done after hours and I did not save the config so was able to revert back.
The basic scope of my project is:
We are running out of IP's on the 192.168.1.0/24 sunbnet so wanted to create a seperate VLAN/Subnet  for physical workstations.
    He is what I orginally did;
    1) On our core switch; (Switch1)
         Create the VLAN,
         VLAN interface,
         DHCP pool,
         excluded address'
    2) On second  switch (Switch 2)
         Add VLAN name, no interface
    3) I then updated the PO-group on Switch1 with new VLAN  (this brought down the link before I was able to finish my config)
Therefore I was not able to complete the following:
add vlan to spanning-tree or updated OSPF routing
Here is what I assume to be the correct order?
    1) On Core Switch (Switch 1)
         Create VLAN
         VLAN interface
         DHCP pool
         excluded address'
         add vlan to spanning-tree
add vlan (passive interface) and sunbet to OSPF routing
    2) On Switch 2
Add vlan name/interfaces with no ip
    3) Update PO groups after the above has been configured
Add new VLAN to Po-Group on Switch 2
Add new VLAN to Po-Group on Switch 1
    4) Last steps
Updated specific access ports with new VLAN and test
upon completion of testing, update all other access ports connected ot workstations with new VLAN
    Questions:
Did my links go down because I added new VLAN to Po-group BEFORE  updating spanning-tree and OSPF routing?
Can anyone verify the order as outlined in the section "Here is what I assume to be the correct order"

So the order in which to apply TASKS is correct?

I need to transmit both the private-vlans (as promiscous trunk) and regular vlans on the trunk port between the Nexus 1000V and the physical switch. Do you know how to properly configure the uplink port to accomplish that ?
    Thank you in advance
    Lucas

Control vlan is a totally seperate VLAN then your System Console. The VLAN just needs to be available to the ESX host through the upstream physical switch and then make sure the VLAN is passed on the uplink port-profile that you assign the ESX host to.
We only need an interface on the ESX host if you decide to use L3 control. In that instance you would create or use an existing VMK interface on the ESX host.

  • Switch not remote manageable after adding VLAN

    Hello,
    I have a cisco 2960.
I've added a VLAN with a different subnet after I gave the switch it's initial IP.
Now, I can't remote manage the switch from any client on the new VLAN/subnet.
Do I have to add a route or something to the old VLAN/initial switch IP?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
    a 2960 is a L2 switch.
That means that there can only ever be 1 IP address configured at any 1 time after a "interface vlan x" command. the other vlans do not need IP addresses on a L2 switch to work. ie just
    vlan x
    name test-vlan
and that should activate the vlan on that switch if it is in VTP transparent or Server mode.
otherwise if in VTP Client mode just so
    show vlan
to see if it has already that VLAN configured in the VLAN database.
The switch will only then be manageable from the VLAN with the IP address.
    Thanks

  • Impact in adding VLANs to MST instances dynamically

I am wondering if it's viable to add and remove VLANs dynamically to MST instances. If so, I can make a good traffic balance. However, I read in CCO site that each time some VLAN is added, the MST database is reinitialized, but will it stop the traffic a little, for example ?
    Thanks !
    Cleber

    Hi Cleber,
MST needs to ensure that there is a consistent vlan to instance mapping, else there would be a possibility of bridging loops (see example in the end). That's why the concept of region was introduced: a region is basically a group of switches with same vlan to instance mapping.
As a result, if you are changing the vlan to instance mapping on one switch, MST needs to reconverge because this switch just moved to a different region. The simple solution that was chosen in order to implement that was to restart the MST process from scratch as soon as you change the configuration. There might have been complex optimization, but considering that MST needs to reconverge anyway, they were not going to be very useful. This is basically an issue of MST, not of the implementation. The best work around I know of is to pre-provision vlans and instances in the MST configuration so that they are available when you need them.
    Regards,
    Francois
Loop example with inconsistent vlan to instance mapping:
Suppose you have two bridge A and B running two instances 1 an 2. A has two ports p1 and p2 connecting to two ports p1 and p2 on B. Instance 1 is blocking p1 on A, instance 2 is blocking p2 on B. Now suppose that vlan X is mapped to instance 2 on A but mapped to instance 1 on B -> vlan X has a permanent loop between A and B. MST prevents this issue by putting A and B in different region, and forcing all the vlans to be handle by a single instance (the CIST) between region.

  • Nexus 1000v: Control VLAN must be same VLAN as ESX hosts?

    Hello,
I'm trying to install nexus 1000v and came across the below prerequisite.
The below release notes for Nexus 1000v states
    VMware and Host Prerequisites
The VSM VM control interface must be on the same Layer 2 VLAN as the ESX 4.0 host that it manages. If you configure Layer 3, then you do not have this restriction. In each case however, the two VSMs must run in the same IP subnet.
What I'm trying to do is to create 2 VLANs - one for management and the other for control & Data (as per latest deployment guide, we can put control & data in the same vlan).
However, I wanted to have all ESX host management same VLAN as the VSM management as well as the vCenter Management. Essentially, creating a management network.
However, from the above "VMWare and Host Prerequisites", does this means I cannot do this?
I need to have the ESX host management same VLAN as the control VLAN?
This means that my ESX host will reside in a different VLAN than my management subnet?
    Thanks...

Control vlan is a totally seperate VLAN then your System Console. The VLAN just needs to be available to the ESX host through the upstream physical switch and then make sure the VLAN is passed on the uplink port-profile that you assign the ESX host to.

  • Added vlan not working

I am still using a 6509. I am trying to add a new vlan, but I can't even ping the router ip on that vlan from the router. I have configured it the same as my other vlans that work just fine. I am wondering if I have crossed some limit. I have my vlans setup as 1,100,200,300,400,500,600,700,800,900. Up not vlan 800 works just fine. VLAN 900 doesn't. I can't figure out what the problem is.  Below is my vlan configuration. Anything you see wrong?
    interface Vlan900
     ip address 192.168.104.252 255.255.255.0
     ip helper-address 192.168.37.61
     no ip redirects
     ip pim sparse-dense-mode
     standby 90 ip 192.168.104.254
     standby 90 priority 105
     standby 90 preempt

I assume 'show vlan' displays vlan 900?  i.e. you issued command 'vlan 900' on the 6509?  with the 6509 owning the gateway for vlan 900 it will need vlan 900 in the vlan db.  If you have an access port in vlan 900 on the 6509 - maybe put portfast on the port for testing - it should come up.  Maybe add it to a trunk to a downstream switch as well..?

  • Firewall vlan-group: adding vlans to exisiting vlan-group

    Hi,
I have the following firewall vlan-group defined on my 6500
    firewall vlan-group 3 2803,2805,2807
I need to add another vlan, say 2809 to this group.
    Will this command:
    firewall vlan-group 3 2809
overwrite or append the exisitng vlan-group. What would be the safest method to add this new vlan to the group.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Currently my config shows like below, which includes three "firewall vlan-group" statements, each with a comma-separated list of vlan numbers:
    firewall switch 1 module 4 vlan-group 1,2,3
    firewall switch 2 module 4 vlan-group 1,2,3
    firewall vlan-group 1  2,3,4
firewall vlan-group 2  5,6,7  (vlans for server context)
    firewall vlan-group 3  8,9,10
My question is:  when I add the 5 new vlans, do I have to simply issue an additional "firewall vlan-group" statement with the five new vlan numbers, like this?
    firewall vlan-group 2 30,40,50,60,70  (I need to add vlans in vlan-group 2)
In other words, will above command overwrite my existing list of vlans in vlan group 2 if I only add the five new vlans in vlan group 2 ?  I obviously don't want to lose connectivity by erasing all my existing vlans.
Or do I have to issue a new statement that includes ALL of the existing vlans and five new vlans, like this?
firewall vlan-group 2 [all previously existing vlans],30,40,50,60,70 (five new vlans)
I want to know if i typed the above command with existing vlan and the new vlans does it cause any issues to the running environment b/c i think with the above command existing vlans will also be pushed along with new vlans to FWSM again or this is not the case.

  • Vlan base Qos on Cisco Nexus 5K

Is Cisco Nexus 5596UP support vlan base Policing and traffic shaping on code NX OS version: 5.1(3)N1(1)

  • Configure port vlan on nexus 5k

i made a change to one port on the first nexus 5k to vlan 24 on port 102/1/45. but looks like i had to make the same change to the other nexus 5k.
why is that? is it because both ports are in a port channel?

    Hi Tony,
Is that N2K FEX dual homed to two Nexus 5Ks?
Also is vlan 24 a vpc vlan?
if it is, the yes you have to configure both parent switches with the same configurations .
You can also do config-sync but i suggest you just manually hardcode both ports in the N5Ks.

  • Another Cisco prime template Q. Adding numbers to vlan

    Hi
Im fidling with these templates. Got some good help in the last one, and some fine input and got that solved. So now im on to the next issue i have.
I will make some automation to adding VLAN.
Each location i have, has 20 vlan.
    Location 1 has vlan 20-39
    Location 2 has vlan 40-59
Location 3 has vlan 60-79 and so on.
The naming of my vlan is always the same.
Vlan 20 (40 and 60 etc) is: ADM
Vlan 21 (41 and 61 etc) is: ALARM
Vlan 22 (42 and 62 etc) is: WIFI
Vlan 23 (43 and 63 etc) is: INT
    and so on.
What i would like to have is if the template could be so i just enter the vlan number for the first vlan.
So if i enter vlan 20 in the template, it will automatic name that ADM as well.
And then it will make a (20+1) vlan 21 named alarm and so on and so on.
    Is that even possible ?
Would save me a ton of time :)
    Thx
    / Carsten

    Carsten,
What you have listed could be scripted using Apache VTL with a few #if statements.
    Example:
    #if  ($vlanid eq "20")
           vlan $vlanid
           name ADM
           exit
           vlan 21
           name ALARM
           exit
           vlan22
           name WIFI
           exit
....and so forth to completion.  You might try setting this up using the foreach loop until it stops that way.  For my variable I used a drop down variable for $vlanid in this example.  So if your vlan ids jump by 20s as you have shown you could define the drop down variable as 20,40,60, so that it is point and click.  Be advised though that if you want to assign specific vlans to specific ports you will have to add that in there.  But again if those ports are always the same in your network that could be included in the same template by adding the interface, and switchport configs.  Here is the output of my test config based on your details minus the interface assignments.
    ============================================================================
    #if ($vlanid eq "20")
          vlan $vlanid
          name ADM
          exit
          vlan 21
          name ALARM
          exit
          vlan 22
          name WIFI
          exit
    #end
    #if ($vlanid eq "40")
          vlan $vlanid
          name ADM
          exit
          vlan 41
          name ALARM
          exit
          vlan 42
          name WIFI
          exit
    #end

  • Connecting a WS-C4948 to a Nexus 5010

is it possible to connect a WS-C4948 switch to a Nexus 5010? I have a flat network with no vlans.I know you are suppose to use the first 8 ports of the Nexus to get it to be on a 1GB port. What gbic am i to use on the ws-c4948 switch? if using a fiber cable or a rj45 cable?

I was able to get it to work.....thank  you for the guys who responded!!
    configuration on the WS-C4948:
    interface GigabitEthernet1/48
    description connection to nexus5010
    media-type rj45
    interface Vlan1
    ip address 10.x.x.226 255.0.0.0
    ip default-gateway 10.x.x.1
    configuration on the Nexus 5010:
    vrf context management
    vlan 1
    interface Vlan1
      no shutdown
      ip address 10.x.x.223/8
    interface Ethernet1/1
      switchport mode trunk
      speed 1000
steps on adding vlan 1 and adding an IP address on the Nexus 5010:
    - remove int mgmt 0, ip address and vrf context management
    nexus5010(config)# int mgmt 0
    nexus5010(config-if)# no ip address
    nexus5010(config-if)# vrf context management
    nexus5010(config-vrf)# no ip route 0.0.0.0/0 10.x.x.1
    nexus5010(config-vrf)# exit
    - turn on feature interface-vlan, create int vlan 1, add IP address, no shut, add vrf context default
    nexus5010(config)# feature interface-vlan
    nexus5010(config)# int vlan 1
    nexus5010(config-if)# ip address 10.x.x.223/8
    nexus5010(config-if)# no shut
    nexus5010(config-if)# exit
    nexus5010(config)# vlan 1
    nexus5010(config-vlan)# exit
    nexus5010(config)# vrf context default
    nexus5010(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0/0 10.x.x.1

  • Native Vlan Effect on the Overall Network Performance

    Dear Experts,
I would like to know that did Native Vlan affect the overall Network performance and make the whole network slow and can be cause for all Network devices to be failure or disconnect. I am facing this issue for the network that after apply Vlan dot1q tag native" in global Config the user disconnect from the network and also the devices.
Kindly assist on this issue with the practical scenario and result oriented conclusion.
Further I have following Devices in the Network Catalyst 4500, Nexus 5548, FIC 6248, UCS 5018 and Catalyst 3750.
The issue is this the VLAN 50 which is for UCS is not able to access from the LAN network even we added the VLAN 50 on all the Switches and it propogated to whole network so we  make Vlan 50 as Native and added "switchport trunk native vlan 50 on trunks ports from Nexux 5548 to Fabric Interconnect and to Core Switch 4500. After added vlan 50 as native vlan we can access the UCS from LAN.
But after adding native vlan 50 on all trunks the Network Administrator complaining that network is slow and few servers are disconnecting.
here for the information that server vlan is 1.
    Waiting for the answer.
    Thanks,
    JH
    Thanks,
    JH

    Hello.
    1. Could you please draw interconnectivity diagram of all the devices?
    2. Could you chose any LAN device (on the same switch as UCS) and post here running config of the device that interconnects them?
