No OK prompt RSC PGX32 Sunfire 280R

This is a bit chicken and egg.
I have just installed a second hand PGX32 graphics into a sunfire 280R that has previously been administered by RSC. How (please be verbose) do I get the server to output to the graphics card? I don't know how to get to the OK prompt using RSC to turn off RSC! I also have a USB keyboard and mouse. I am using the RSC gui client on windows and connecting to RSC using ethernet. Telnet to RSC works but I assume I can't telnet to the OK prompt?
Thanks,
Tim.

Yes, you can telnet to the ok prompt.
Once you are the rsc prompt type "console" to get to the ok prompt (assuming its not booted).
If its booted, you'll need to type "break" first.
Type "~." to get back to the rsc from the console
Personally I would leave the console on the rsc as its the most useful configuration for remote management.
But if you do want to change it, you need to do
setenv output-device screen
setenv input-device keyboard
Alternatively, you can do the same thing from the os level using the eeprom command.

• Sunfire 280R and Remote System Control (RSC)

I have a sunfire 280R machine, and I was wondering if RSC can be loaded onto it. The sunfire page says that it can, but the RSC page lists much newer models as system requirements for the software.
Also can anyone tell me if the RSC provides a windowing environment for the machine (i've been trying to figure out how to get remote access to a linux windowing environment without much success. I've installed cygwin/x on my windows computer)
Thanks!

Hello,
as the name implies the RSC allows to control and monitor the system from remote via serial or ethernet.
The lastest version can be downloaded from
http://www.sun.com/servers/rsc.html
I'm running RSC 2.2.3 on an E250 (the F280R and the other systems listed on the above page are supported as well).
Also can anyone tell me if the RSC provides a windowing environment for the machine. (i've been trying to figure out how to get remote access to a linux windowing environment without much success. I've installed cygwin/x on my windows computer).
No, it just the client/server application to communicate with the RSC hardware.

Resolution: Top
Normally, this is the recommended action. But if the patch
that fails to install is 114877-xx or 114878-xx, then a
rollback may not be necessary.
Both 114877-xx (Solaris 8) and 114878-xx (Solaris 9) patches the following
packages: SUNWjfca, SUNWjfcax, SUNWjfcau, and SUNWjfcaux.
The packages and patches are drivers for the JNI 2GB PCI Single FC Network
Adapter and JNI 2GB PCI Dual FC Network Adapter fibre-channel that have
Sun StorEdge SAN 4.x Foundation Suite compatible FCODE.
If server does not have this type of host bus adapter, then SUNWjfca,
SUNWjfcax, SUNWjfcau, and SUNWjfcaux packages are not installed on
the system. The patch will fail to install causing install_it script
to prompt for a rollback.
For this specific situation, it is okay to respond no to the rollback
and let install_it script proceed to completion as the patch is not
required.

then I don't know how to do it.
Anyone know how to log in? or Sun has a default password and user name?
Help me please.

• Installing Solaris 8 on a SunFire 280R

The SunFire 280R has 11 external disks. Disk 11 has Solaris 9 installed.
In attempting to install Solaris on another disk, the following message appears at the command "boot cdrom" command:
krtld: load_exec: fail to expand cpu/$CPU
krtld: error during initial load/link phase
panic-boot: exit to 64 returned from client program.

Do you have any ideas on how to solve this?
Is Solaris 8 (1/01) unable to installed on a 64-bit machine?

So the hardware sees the library but the os dos not compute… any idea how to get the drivers working and something under /dev/rmt?

You could experiment with giving OBP the absolute path to that USB device, but I doubt you'll be successful. The Sunfire 280R (same hardware as the Sunblade 1000, Sunblade 2000, and Netra 20) design expected USB to be only for keyboard and mouse, not for any storage devices. If booting ever works manually from a USB stick, then you could create a custom alias for the device.
Try an experiment by using a CD or DVD of an older release of Solaris 10 instead of the current release.
The earlier ones need fewer hardware resources. I also recall a few forum posts that seem to suggest the bootblock structure on the CD's and DVD's of those earlier releases was more compatible with older hardware.
You might also need to get yourself a copy of the OBP 4.x Command Reference Manual, document No. 816-1177
[http://dlc.sun.com/pdf/816-1177-10/816-1177-10.pdf|http://dlc.sun.com/pdf/816-1177-10/816-1177-10.pdf]

• Sunfire 280r security-mode=full

Hi,
I've bought a sunfire 280r off of ebay, but the security mode is set to full. If I replace the IDPROM with another one (PN 525-1788) would that fix the issue, or do I have to send the board to sun to be cleared?
Thanks,
chepati

Also if someone does have one of these, if the system at least tries to boot from the disk, it might be easiest to construct a disk that will properly boot the machine with a root password you know.
Once the machine is booted, then the root user can reset the security mode for the eeprom. By juggling disks around, making that happen might not be too difficult.
Of course if the security mode is full and the machine is not set to autoboot, then you need a different solution.

• SunFire 280R 33/66 or 66?

I have found the following information on the SunFire 280R stating the PCI solot one is 33/66:
PCI Slot 1 /pci@8,600000/pci@1,* 33/66mhz-32/64bit-3.3V from ( Solaris[TM]: Matrix of Recognized Device Paths, http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/Example/documen ts/21216.html )
However,Chapter 2 fot the "Servicing the Main Logic Board and Components" document ( http://docs.sun.com/source/806-4807-10/board5.htm#1976610 ) states the following ( 66 only )... Note - PCI slot 1 is reserved for high-speed (66-MHz) cards. Installing a low-speed (33-MHz) card into PCI slot 1 will affect FC-AL performance. Do not install a low-speed card into PCI slot 1.
So which is it? 33/66 or just 66 Mhz?

Fibre Channel disk controller. FC-AL is Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop, a networking technology that supports IP or SCSI at Gigabit or higher speeds.
http://www.t11.org/index.htm
So basically the 280R, V480/490 and V880/890 systems have a disk controller that uses FC-AL to transport SCSI protocol to the disks. FC-AL is a type of loop network, dare I say, similar in theory to token ring networking technology. Fibre Channel is an enterprise class technology mainly used to build storage area networks. SANs offer a more scalable solution for storage compared to the limitations of direct attached SCSI storage. Higher throughput can be obtained as well, currently Sun offers 400MB/s on a single channel HBA. The highest throughput possible with the 280R is 100MB/s to 200MB/s. I have never tried to configure the 280R onboard controller to 200MB/s ( not sure if it is even possible, perhaps using the HSSDC interface attached to a switch?? ), but with a X6799A installed in PCI slot 1, 200MB/s is possible.

• Sunfire 280R has performaqnce Issue when working without RSC Card

We have a Sunfire 280 Installed and the RSC card was having some problem the same was removed from the machine.
The RSC Software was also removed from the System.
The has PC's connected as terminals on the ethernet using telnet.
Now the system was found to go into a sleep state once or twice a day and the user had to kill all the running processes and restart the system.
Is there any Way we can make the system work properly till we get the replacement card.

Quote from: Mark on 26-May-10, 00:36:10
Try reseating the card as perhaps it's not in quite right. What power supply do you exactly have? (Will say on the sticker on the side of the unit)
Update to the latest graphics card drivers too. >>nVidia Drivers<<
About a month or so ago when I was dusting out my PC I checked to make sure it was seated properly, so it was all the way in. I have already tried downloading drivers for it three times. (First time when the card was first installed, and twice since then when it pissed me off enough to try trouble shooting myself.) But I'll go ahead and download the latest drivers again, just to make sure.
The power supply:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182022 That's it. (Is linking to Newegg okay?) A Rosewill RD450-2-DB.
Also, other people have reported this problem on the newegg page for this specific graphics card.
Lorenzo's comment in the 2 egg reviews specifically is pretty much what happens to me. (Though we have two different PC's.)

We have 10 or so racks of 280r servers and they all shipped with an addon card that hs a 56k modem and console port. I tipped into the console port and I get prompted for a username and password. • A5200 w/sunfire 280R

Finished rackmouting some new to us 280R's and an A5200 array with 12 33.x GB drives, 6 front 6 rear. They show up in format, show up in luxvm, show up in discs with SMC2.1 which came on our 12/03 DVD release of solaris9. When I try to use the 'enhanced' disc choice in SMC it goes into never never land for hours [I let it run all nite just to be sure I was not being too hasty] . What do I use to configure this array, am I missing some software somewhere, right now it's just a jabod. Is there some kind of disk manager on the 9 release I don''t know about. I've always used veritas VM but we're on a budget . I'd like to just configure it so it has two big file systems . Tried installing SMC 3.x and ran the install, said it ran and then finished but it lied and installed nothing. So far I'm not happy with this 9 release and may go back to 8. Any help appreciated especially if someone can point me to a tutorial. I did read the docs on the 5200 and am curious just what the touch screen in the front is for, could find no reference to it. Is it just more 'blinkin lights' to awe the office staff or what :-) I'm leery about fooling with it, i have fat fingers...

I believe you need Raid Manager 6 to create & manage LUNs

• What are these devices? ( for a sunfire 280r )

ohci0, fssnap0, winlock0, lockstat0

If you use Google for each you'll find that most are software constructs, not hardware.
ohci
fssnap
winlock
lockstat
... and instance zero for each.
They are not peculiar to a 280R but are rather generic for computing systems.

There may even be man pages for each.

• Solaris 10 on 280R with A1000

We have loaded solaris 10 ( 3/05) on our server i.e. Sunfire 280R with A1000 storage connected to it thru SCSI cable. We have addon SCSI card installed in server. Our A1000 is having only one controller.
Afterthat we have loaded sun storage RAID Manager 6.22 software to configure A1000 , we have made slices using RAID 5 & using RM6 utility. While rebooting the server we are getting following two errors & keeps scrolling on screen for about 10 minutes , though we are able to access A1000;
1. Warning : mod_load : cannot load module 'rdriver'
2. /kernel/drv/spark9/rdriver:undefined symbol 'dev_get_dev_info'
Is any solution to above errors? Is any patch / upgrade / firmware etc for above errors ?
Will it recommended to upgrade to solaris 10 or continue with solaris 9. we are using this as a database server with oracle 10G.

FYI, I think Sun discontinued support for the A1000 h/w in Solaris 10... should be documented.
I only mention this in case you want to have Sun support help you... if it works fine, I generally wouldn't worry. But it is a production system, I might have second thoughts about using Solaris 10 with unsupported h/w.
My $.02, YMMV.

• Question regarding Sun Fire 280R

I am having a problem with a SunFire 280R Server. The server reboots at random times by itself. I have two other 280Rs that do not do this. We went ahead and upgraded the OS to Solaris 10 and still have the same problem. All that this currently on it is the OS.
Does anyone know where I can get firmware updates for this server or know of any commands that I could perform to research my problem?
Thanks
Chris

Michael, if the system is caught in a crash loop you can't access the /var partition, the system just constantly reboots over and over. However, there will be console output if attached and there is a possibilty of sending a break signal to bring the system to obp. From there they can try to recover the system from a DVD image or install server. The patch can't be installed until they get a mountable root partition. I also suggest that they make a service call if the system is on support contract.
