No sound from RealTek audio card? [Solved]

I can't hear any sound from my laptop. This is what I executed:
pacman -S alsa-utils
gpasswd -a yourusername audio
alsamixer
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
alsactl store
nano /etc/rc.conf
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network crond alsa)

If I understand you correctly, you have installed all required alsa packages and tried to configure. What doesn't work is attempting to push up the volume via alsamixer/aumix etc., unmuting also does not work.
Am I correct?
If so, you may have a similar issue to what happened to me a ways back. Is your current kernel up to date? The problem I had involved the fact that my sound card (though it was extremely common and, well, sh*tty) was affected by a feature regression in the ALSA code and an incompatibility with kernel in what was then [current]. I had to wait for the kernel to catch up to ALSA to do anything, but the regression had to be fixed before I could do anything useful.
Moral of the story (also known as the 'tl;dr' or 'too long; didn't read' version) - Try updating your kernel if all else has failed. If nothing useful comes out of that, try searching the ALSA site.

My goal is to get the tv to output the sound to my computer speakers, which are plugged into the Realtek audio card. All I really have for audo out on the tv is a digital coaxial out, and that is plugged into the digital in on my hp. But I get no sound. What can I do? Thank you!

    Hello Ptero1,
By default settings are going to be set to the analog jacks. You may need to check the settings to ensure they are set for digital use.

    Hi:
If you can find one that fits, you need a PCIe X1 low profile audio card with a low profile mounting bracket.
That would be fitted in one of those two small black slots running parallel to the bottom of the motherboard in the picture below.
These for example, are low profile and come with a low profile mounting bracket.

  • [SOLVED] Choppy sound with Intel audio card

Ever since I bought this laptop and installed Arch, I have experienced this annoying choppiness.
What happens is that when I highlight other windows, under the minimum memory/cpu load the sound is truncated. I can't listen to music pleasantly on my laptop, and I can't stand it.
My laptop is a HP 530, with an integrated Intel audio card. This is the output from hwd -s:
    Sound(a) : 82801G ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller module: snd-hda-intel
I have 1Gb of RAM, and the processor doesn't seem very busy when the sound is truncated. This happens under any DE/WM - even in tty!
For what is worth, I had problems with the speakers not muting when the headphones were plugged in, and I have followed the method indicated here.
    Thanks for your time.

Auto is the default, it might not be resolving the model correctly (that's the case with my laptop).  Try model=hp.
If that doesn't work, you could try turning off power saving:
    options snd-hda-intel power_save=0

  • No sound and no audio card in device manager

    Hello!
I have a HP Pavilion dv6710ea and my operating system is 32-bit Windows Vista SP2. Quite some time ago my optical CD/DVD drive stopped working. It simply disappeared from My Computer and the Device Manager. I've tried all the suggested fixes I found on this forum but none of them worked. But I didn't need the drive that much anyway, so after some struggle I just gave up on this issue.
And now another such thing happened. Suddenly, I lost sound and when I hovered my mouse pointer over the sound icon at the taskbar, a pop-up showed saying "No Audio Output device is installed.". I checked the device manager, and my audio card was gone! Any attempts to detect it failed. I restored the system to the point before the problem occured, but it did not help. I tried to install the new audio drivers, but the installation failed, because the device could not have been found. Now I don't know what else can be done to try to fix this. I certainly hope it is not related with hardware failure of some kind.
I would greatly appreciate any help on this issue.

    Hi,
    Reset BIOS to defaults
Restart the PC, as you see initial POST Screen on the Monitor, start pressing F10 to access BIOS< press f5, select Yes, and Press f10 to save and exit.

  • Dv-1015ea- no sound from TV via HDMI- solved

    hi guys
i had a problem with sound from TV via HDMI from my DV5- 1015ea. i had gone through almost all the threads but the solution was pretty similar. here is how i solved it.
    i have windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.
go to device manager and open Sound, video and game controllers
it should bring IDT HD audio CODEC (or appropriate driver/device name, depending on your machine) and
NIVIDIA HD audio (again dependent on your machine).
now right click on each one in turn and just select update driver.
after its done (dont restart your pc yet, even if it asks you to)
right click on the speaker icon/ audio icon on right side of your task bar
    open playback devices
a new playback device should be there, called something along the lines "NVIDIA HDMI output" which should have a tv icon next to it
single click on it and select SET DEFAULT just under the icons in the window of playback devices.
now try playing something on PC and you should be able to watch and hear from your tv.
**this was done with hdmi connected to the TV and the tv should be displaying the same as your PC screen.

  • Record sound from M-Audio Firewire Solo input with S/PDIF

Hey there, I am using a m-audio firewire solo and connect it to my mac mini 2013 with firewire cable. If I try to record sound from my guitar, it is ok, however the sound from S/PDIF input cannot be recorded. I can see the sound signal from the mac input preference, however it just cannot be played or recorded. I have searched through the forum and found some people also have the same problem but just cannot solve it. Does anyone have some idea? Thanks.

Have you selected the correct Input pair in a stereo Logic channel strip? Standard s/pdif is a stereo signal.
Also, the M-Audio device may have to be set to slave mode as the incoming digital signal will have to become the master digital clock for the M-Audio unit.
The M-Audio unit should probably be set to 48kHz, it's doesn't do 96hHz does it?

Unfortunately I couldn't get the sound to work so far. It is not possible, to pass the sound via an external wire to the soundcard, as the tv-card has no external outputs.
    modprobe tvaudio
didn't have any effect. When I change the volume in tvtime, in kmix and alsamixer the "line"-lever moves accordingly. And: Yes, it is unmuted. I had this problem before (on Debian) and depending on the version either
    sox -c 1 -w -r 32000 -t alsa hw:1 -t alsa hw:0
    or
    sox -c 2 -s -w -r 32000 -t ossdsp /dev/dsp1 -t ossdsp -w -r 32000 /dev/dsp
did the trick. This is also what google, the forum search and several wikis proposed.
But now, the first command gives back:
sox soxio: Can't open input file `/dev/dsp1': No such file or directory
and the second command gives back:
sox soxio: Failed reading `hw:1': cannot open audio device
I wanted to avoid fiddling with the
    tuner=n channel=m
options, as it didn't have any effect earlier (on debian) and right now video is running smoothly. Never change a winning team.
I hardly think this might matter, but the TV-encoding system is PAL (Germany) and it's cable-tv.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
    cheers
    daniel

Do you have the module saa7134-alsa? I have a hybrid card with that chipset, and don't use the analogue often but I think I had to explicitely load that module for sound to work.

  • Have an iMac Early 2008 + Windows 7 and no sound from speaker out? SOLVED!!

    Hello everyone,
So I'm pleased to say after over a month of trying to solve this annoying problem, it's been solved! Basically, if you have an iMac, Early 2008 edition (8,1) and Windows 7 and notice that the default microsoft driver gives very low sound and the new realtek drivers only give sound through the internal speakers... then this solution is for you!
    What you'll need:
    7-zip (www.7-zip.com)
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Disc 1 (NOT Snow Leopard!)
Here's what you'll need to do, step by step:
    1) Uninstall the Realtek Driver (latest version currently 2.37) by going to Control Panel / Programs / Uninstall Programs.
    2) Reboot. Upon reboot, the system will automatically reinstall the default Microsoft drivers. You can check this in Device Manager (control panel / system / device manager).
    3) Insert the original Leopard Disc 1 that came with your iMac (very important, as this is the only driver I know for sure will work). Point windows explorer to the folder: D:\Boot Camp\Drivers (assuming d: is your cd-rom drive).
    4) Copy the "RealTekSetup.exe" file somewhere on your desktop. Do NOT install it!
    5) Decompress "RealTekSetup.exe" by right clicking the file and choosing "7-zip decompress". Again, you'll need to make sure you installed 7-zip from 7zip.com prior to doing this.
    6) Go to your Device Manager again, right click the sound device (which should be something like High Definition Audio) and choose "Update Device Software".
    7) Select "Browse my computer for driver software" and direct it to the folder that you extracted the drivers to.
    8) You now have sound through your EXTERNAL SPEAKERS!
This works because there is a bug that RealTek/Apple does not seem to want to fix where the newer version of the RealTek control panel detects the speaker out as line in and the line in as nothing! This forces drivers normally made for Vista or Vista64 to install on Windows 7, which work 100% great.
I promise you, if you have an Early 2008 iMac, this WILL fix your problem if you follow each step! Let me know if you have any questions!
    Brad Levicoff

If you don't have any Leopard disk then just google for "Vista_R199.exe".
This driver works nice on Early 2008 IMAC. I also tried an earlier version, Vista_R182.exe but there sometimes was a horrible background noise which made listening to music impossible.
Just download and follow the instructions above in the first post.
    Have fun.

  • Quality of sound from Realtek

    Good morning ...
In my last PC I have a sound card from Creative and their cambridge speaker set. The music from that was good. However since i have upgarde to my new machine and using their Realtek sound but with my old cambridge speaker. I noticed that sound cracks when its at high volume and don't sound as crystal clear.
    Anyone notices the same problem?

Quote from: Bluum on 10-February-07, 22:40:55
Realtek should be banned from motherboards. There is allway some kindd of trouble with their chips!
Realtek is CHEAP, and thats the only reason MB produsent's buy their products.
Nothing wrong with Realtek codecs, particularly the most recent AC'97 and HD product lines.  In fact, Realtek codecs have compared favorably to Creative products in subjective music and DVD movie playback listening tests performed by many review sites.  e.g.
The SB Audigy SE generates better gaming audio quality than the Realtek ALC-882 based systems and similar DVD/music audio quality.  In our subjective headphone testing we noticed differences between the two codecs, with the output from the ALC-882 sounding cleaner in the mid-range tones with deeper bass in the music and DVD movie playback tests while ambient sounds and positioning in the games tests clearly favored the SB Audigy SE.  However, the difference was minor when utilizing our 4, 5.1, or 7.1 speaker setup in a typical room environment. - MSI: SLI Plus Eight, Anandtech.com
Both The Matrix and Dream Theater Live at Budokan took full advantage of our 5.1 surround system, though we preferred listening to Dream Theatre using the higher quality headphones in stereo while watching.  And so, we listened both ways on each card just to cover the bases.  And what do you know, but we just couldn't find favor with any of these cards.  Each did as good of a job as the last playing back these higher quality audio streams. - Winter Audio Reference: On-Board, Consumer, and Pro Solutions, Anandtech.com
There are innumerable ways that motherboard designers/manufacturers can screw-up the analog signal output quality by paying little attention to design, including poor MTRR or chipset optimization in BIOS that results in latency or interference problems (e.g. users reporting "I updated my BIOS and all the crackling/noise/whining went away").  You can't just slap a codec on a board surrounded by dozens of high-frequency signals and expect the codec to compensate or correct for all the short-comings of the board design.  Similar complaints can be found with any codecs, including ADI, and even sound cards are not immune to these problems.

  • No Sound from USB Audio

I have a feeling this is a stupid mistake but I can't for the life of me figure out how to fix it. I had a fresh install of arch and everything worked fine, and speaker-test played fine. I installed KDE and audio still worked, but it kept giving notifications on startup like, "USB audio device has been removed", when the USB headset was still plugged in. Every once in a while I'd be stuck without sound but it would fix itself after removing and reinserting the USB audio thing. Eventually it started up with no audio; Each time the audio device is removed KDE said, "Would you like this to be removed from the device list", and this time I clicked "No" and "don't show me again". I can't figure out how to revert to "show me again". At time of writing with my USB audio plugged in, in the KDE Phonon audio system settings manager, it lists five greyed out USB headphone devices, and one colored one. I have a feeling that's the problem...
If I start up VLC media player, for example, I can go into that program's audio device manager and select USB audio, and everything plays fine! When it plays to the default device though, no sound comes out of my headset, so I can't get audio out of most applications.
    The module is loaded:
    lsmod | grep snd_usb_audio
    > snd_usb_audio         112633  3
I've tried the things recommended on the following thread and on the wiki, but neither have worked:
    http://archlinux.me/w0ng/2012/07/06/als … b-headset/
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … ound_cards
(neither the manual activation or the automatic script)
Oh, and looking at the problem on this page on the forum: I've changed the order of the devices and this hasn't helped.
Any ideas on what's wrong, or how to remove all the dead devices it lists?
Last edited by NeuroFuzzy (2013-06-23 16:26:32)

to remove the other devices you have to disable them. It could be done from that window but you don't have the tab. So try installing pavucontrol and disable the other cards.
And you have to select in asound conf to use your usb card on boot. Use the script from the wiki for that.

  • No Sound from Realtek on K8N SLI-FI (NOW FIXED)

New bulid all snapped together well enough but I am getting nothing from the
Realtek AC'97 neither through line out nor front panel.
A souncard when intsalled to check performs as normal.
Without/before the soundcard added everything looks fine. All okay in Device
Manager and no error messages when sounds/music playing nor in speaker
setup... just not a peep from the damn board. BTW I didn't connect a speaker
until late after installing the OS.
I have updated the drivers but not flashed the BIOS, there wouldn't appear
any reason to. I have version 1.2, 1.3 shows nothing relevant so why risk
    RMA problems?
    UPDATE: FIX = RTFM
I had forgotten about the jumpers on the front panel audi connector. Disconnectiong the front panel and replacing jumpers gives back the sound.
I still have a problem that the front panel audio connector I used is incompatible, but shouldbe able to confirm by cross checking wiring.

    FIXED
"MSI reminds you... 5&6,9&10 have to be jumpered."
Possible problem with cases front audio panel/connector but onboard sound okay.

  • No sound from some audio clips suddenly

Made a 55min movie from multiple video clips and narrated with several audio recordings and added music tracks as well, suddenly some audio clips after the first 30 mins show up blank, when viewing audio waves and their volumes are set fine. Other audio clisp in between works fine thou.
Found this after having exported and shared to iDVD, Audio wave files and Media files seems fine in the project folder/content. what happened and have could I possible recap output from these clips again?
BTW HD ***** on sound facility and sometimes disstores sounds during playback when a project gets too large, sometime after saving project and emptying trash, it might work again for a while
Googled around for few days now with out any solutions, any hints?

    Hi stefw,
I assume you've already done the following:
    (1) Make sure the audio checkbox is selected for the track you want to hear. The audio checkbox is to the right of each track in the timeline viewer.
    (2) If the audio checkbox is selected, then choose View > Show Clip Volume Levels and see if the audio levels for the tracks are set to a level that can be heard"
If so, this is what I'd try.....with your project open, start an new, empty project. Go to the original project and copy one of the clips (highlight it and then FILE....COPY.) Go to the other project and click in the second line of the timeline and click FILE...PASTE. Make sure the audio checkbox (on the far right) is selected for that line and attempt to play it in the new project. If it works, drag it back into your original project and try it from there.
If that doesn't work, look for the. aiff files in the original project file in Finder (find the file, right click, choose "Show Package contents", then look in the media folder.) Drag that file into the new project and attempt to play it. If it works, drag it back into your original project and try it there.
Hope it works out for you.

  • No sound from rear audio out port?

    Hey guys.
I am trying to troubleshoot a sound issue with a Vista Home Basic machine.
I can't really give you all the MOBO specs etc because I am not currently in front of the machine. I can however confirm that it is using a Realtek chipset and is configured using the Realtek Sound Manager software.
I am really just wanting to use basic sound (i.e. just speaker, not 5., 7. etc).
I am trying to make use of an old stereo system by using a 3.5mm aux jack to dual RCA (white and red) plugs.
I can get sound when I plug the aux jack into the front earphones port but I cannot get sound when I try and use the analogue audio out (lime green) port at the rear of the machine. Vista states that it is working correctly and has a tick next to the speakers but no sound is produced by the speakers.
The MOBO has the following available audio connectors:
Analogue = Mic in (Pink) Audio in (light blue) Audio out (lime green)
Centre Speaker (Orange) Rear Surround (Black) Mid Surround (Grey)
    Digital = x SPDIF
You may ask at this point, why not just use the front headphones jack? Well, the problem is that it seems to be very sensiti've in that Vista keeps reporting that the jack is cycling between a connected and disconnected state.
I also cannot use the SPDIF, as the old stereo only supports aux left and right RCA.
Also, when I try and get one of the rear ports to work, I have made sure that nothing is connected to the sound ports at the front as I know that this can cause problems.
When I plug in the 3.5mm jack into the green port, the Realtek sound manager kicks in and says that "a jack as been connected". I then confirm that I have infact connected the jack to the rear audio out port. I then follow the steps in the wizard but am not able to get sound.
I made sure that I used the most basic settings (i.e. speakers and not 5. etc).
I even tried the grey, black and orange ports (even though I know they are used for surround sound setups) and still no luck.
One interesting setting I did notice was that in Winamp, I had to select the "allow mono speaker" setting to have it play sound through the front headphones port.
However, when I was configuring the rear green port in the Realtex Sound Manager software, there was no mono option. There was only stereo, 5., 7. and some quad....... thing.
Any ideas guys on how to get the rear green port working?
I am wondering if it has something to with a connector on the MOBO. But as I said, Vista and Realtek manager seem to report that all is well.
    My thanks in advance.

    Digital = x SPDIF
Also, when I try and get one of the rear ports to work, I have made sure that nothing is connected to the sound ports at the front as I know that this can cause problems.

alsamixer -c0 gives me my webcam (just mike)
alsamixer -c1 give me the generic (posably my headphone jack)
alsamixer -c2 gives me the HDMI, but it just shows s/pdif and s/pdif 1 through 3
everything is on. just a side note, there's volume controls for alsamixer -c1 (volume as well as mute) but none for -c2, could this be part of the problem?
