Non writable temporary folder OSXserver

I have full admin access to a mini server OSX10.7 yet unable to unzip a file due to the temp folder being unavailable.
Ideas anyone how why this folder behaviour occurs?
File sharing with other users is ON for this machine, FileMakerServer is running, but that's it, no other services.
I am not too familiar with Lion, but what was the trick to get the temporary folder in view so I can check the r/w options?
TIA
Peter

A better and safer syntax is the single command:  sudo rm -rf /var/folders/*  since if  the first line above does not succeed, or is entered in a separate terminal session, the second command will remain pointed at the top level of your home folder by default, effectively telling the computer to ERASE ALL CONTENTS of "~/"  your account's home folder.  In that event, all personal content - desktop files, downloads, documents, local email storage, music, movies, favorite bookmarks, and so on - will be immediately deleted!
Caution is also recommended, since /var/folders  is temporary storage for a lot of applications.  At minimum quit any other open applications and be prepared to restart.
Naturally any command involking "sudo" will only run within an administrative account.  If you don't have an admin account, if the computer is not your personal property, if the computer returns an error when invoking "sudo" or if you simply have doubts or questions about what each element of these commands does,  well that's simply nature's way of saying "call IT."

  • Archive Utility.app "Error identifying a writable temporary folder"

I had to restore my Mac today from a Time Machine backup. Everything went swimmingly, except for now I can't seem to unzip files using Archive Utility.app. In any folder under the root path / on Macintosh HD I get following error:
Error identifying a writable temporary folder. Try moving the archive to another volume.
However, if I move the archive to one of my Firewire external drives and unzip it from there, it works.
I've tried the standard Repair Disk Permissions from Disk Utility, using the diskutil repairpermissions / command and booting into my install disk and trying both of the previous from there. Unfortunatly it didn't solved the problem.
I noticed that when Time Machine restored my Mac the /private folder became visible, so I used Terminal and set it back to hidden. Could there be a problem with the permissions of my /private folder that Repair Disk Permissions hasn't fixed?
Any more suggestions would be ace as I can't seem to find anybody with the same issue via Google. Thanks in advance!

If you're having trouble making changes to files that are inside your home folder (represented by a house icon in the sidebar of a Finder window), or if you can't get changes to the settings of an application to stick, then please see below.
    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if it frightens you, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Unable to create the temporary folder. Error 183 when starting Distiller

New information discovered - see end of message!
Full error message is (window title is Acrobat Distiller):
"Unable to create the temporary folder
Error: 183 - cannot create a file when that file already exists."
I have no idea what file or what folder it is referring to. This is on an x86 Vista notebook and the message comes up when starting the notebook and also if you manually start Distiller 8. Updating did not help, nor did turning off the UAC, or running Distiller as Administrator. In the latter case, Distiller will open correctly, but the next time you need to use it, it fails. With the UAC turned off, the behavior is for it to show the Distiller window for a fraction of a second and close immediately. I also gave the user full rights to the C:\Program Files\Adobe folder and lower. Made no difference.
Coincidental with this is that the PDFMOfficeAddIn.dll add-in will not enable in Word - when it is checked, and I hit OK, I get the message:
"The connected state of Office Add-Ins registered in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE cannot be changed."
All of this is going on when logged in as an administrator. I have seen folks post about this issue, but no answers that actually fiux the problem, just suggest what I have already tried. Anyone seen this one?
The user is highly mobile, so I am not going to have a chance to work on her computer again until next week.
    NEW INFO
I tried removing and reinstalling as administrator and the problem remains. However while trying to troubleshoot, I discovered some more details.
The message is being thrown when acrotray.exe is started as a process in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Control Set\Run and then tries to run acrodist.exe (which fails, BTW). If I don't let it run there and run acrotray, exe as administrator, then acrodist.exe runs as a process without an error. Additionally, stopping it from running in the registry, and then starting MS Word, the Acrobat add-in does load and even though there is an error thown, it still creates the PDF! I have other Vista 32 notebooks running various Acrobat versions with no problems.
Another key thing I found out is that Acrobat started throwing the error after an HP Scanjet 8400 and its software were installed. I tried explicitly giving the user (already an administrator) full rights to the Acrobat, HP and Read IRIS directories. Did not help the problem. I have to think that there is some interaction there, but sure don't know what it is.

what i did to eliminate that error message, i don't think it eliminated th
e problem but now i can reboot and log in OK, was 2 things:
i went into my system registry and unchecked to start at startup and then disavled it.
i also had to go to each adobe icon, right click, go to properites, and than make all selections set to be administator.

By internal, I assume you're referring to your systems (boot) drive. Is it, by chance, a partitioned dive?
Also…although many people successfully use their systems drives as scratch disks, over time you'll have better results using a dedicated drive for your media.
    Good luck.

  • Acrobat 9.0 opens (downloads) server file in temporary folder

Using Acrobat 9.0 (Windows Sharepoint server environment) to open files stored on the server downloads them into a temporary folder on my local computer. Unfortunately, this means that internal links/bookmarks using relative addressing to other files on the server are misdirected:
         SECURITY WARNING
This document is trying to connect to file:///.../Local%20Settings/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/Content.IE5/.../filename.pdf:
I did not experience this behavior with Acrobat 7.0. Is it not possible to open a file in a browser without downloading it? Is there a setting either in Acrobat or Internet Explorer to bypass downloading to my local drive?

    Back to the future!
As a principal developer in our Sharepoint environment, I routinely used Acrobat 9 Pro to modify documents on our corporate intranet. Other uses, however, accessed the same documents with Reader working entirely within their browser. My workaround  has been to re-install Acrobat 7. Documents now open entirely in the browser, and relative links work as before.

  • Webutil failed to create temporary folder using Get_work_area()

    Friends,
We have been migrating from 6i to 10g AS 3-tier environment. We have been using get_work_area() procedure to create temporary folders to transfer report output PDF files for printing. Intially we could able to transfer the files and from there we used webutil_host.blocking to issue the print command. It was working fine. Now webutil is failing to create the temporary folder in the server which was mapped as c:\temp in the webutil.cfg file. We are unable to find the reason behind this failure. Please put your comments for this.
Apart from this if anybody is having solution to print the file to the local printer, please provide the step for that approach.

In case /tmp directory is automatically deleted, is it possible to configure a custom directory for alsbTempJars dir in OSB to assure it is never deleted?Add the -Djava.io.tmpdir=newTempDir parameter in the JAVA_PROPERTIES section of the setDomainEnv.sh script. This new location should be outside of the /tmp dir to avoid being cleared by any process.
I think best soultion would be to have alsbTempJars automatically created whenever /tmp is purged.Doing it on the fly may not be possible however you may anytime raise an enhancement request with support and if prod dev approves it, you may get a fix.

  • If free disk space reaches 45 MB, the Manage Temporary Folder Reserve Space dialog box appears

This was a big problem for me in AA2 but I thought it was gone in AA3. It has only just started happening in AA3. I have gigabytes of space yet this dialog box is only supposed to appear when you have only 45mb of space available?
It seems to happen when a serious amount of editing of files has taken place. I mean sliced & diced and tuned almost every sylable of a vocal line.

Ok - This has happened a couple of times since my last post on the subject but this time I took some readings.
When doing an "export" the Manage Temporary Folder Reserve Space (MTFRS) appeared after doing a vocal edit/comp - I mean a real lot of slicing and dicing in multitrack view (I have no control over the client's vocal ability).
    Details
    OS XP/SP2
Audition on C drive 92gb free
Recorded files (24/44.1) on H Drive 131gb free
    Primary temp on H drive
    Secondary Temp on E drive
There is no undo history showing in the "undo History" area
There are a large number of files listed in the "waveform" area
The temp files totalled about 80mb and are the same size (with the exception of AudxNRJI.tmp which goes from 65.5mb and is then deleted) when the program exits.
I understand that there are limits to everything and that this is more of an annoyance than anything.
It would be good to know just exactly it is that triggers this situation.
PS Just about to post when I did some more sums.
It maybe that Peter K. Larson is correct about the 4gb undo history.
I note that the MTFRS shows "134319 free" space on the primary temp drive and after AA exits there is 131gb. While some of these figures are not exact (file size vs space on disk etc) there is some anomaly.
Do we know where the undo history is stored on disk - I would assume the temp drive?
