Archive Utility.app "Error identifying a writable temporary folder"
I had to restore my Mac today from a Time Machine backup. Everything went swimmingly, except for now I can't seem to unzip files using Archive Utility.app. In any folder under the root path / on Macintosh HD I get following error:
Error identifying a writable temporary folder. Try moving the archive to another volume.
However, if I move the archive to one of my Firewire external drives and unzip it from there, it works.
I've tried the standard Repair Disk Permissions from Disk Utility, using the diskutil repairpermissions / command and booting into my install disk and trying both of the previous from there. Unfortunatly it didn't solved the problem.
I noticed that when Time Machine restored my Mac the /private folder became visible, so I used Terminal and set it back to hidden. Could there be a problem with the permissions of my /private folder that Repair Disk Permissions hasn't fixed?
Any more suggestions would be ace as I can't seem to find anybody with the same issue via Google. Thanks in advance!
A better and safer syntax is the single command: sudo rm -rf /var/folders/* since if the first line above does not succeed, or is entered in a separate terminal session, the second command will remain pointed at the top level of your home folder by default, effectively telling the computer to ERASE ALL CONTENTS of "~/" your account's home folder. In that event, all personal content - desktop files, downloads, documents, local email storage, music, movies, favorite bookmarks, and so on - will be immediately deleted!
Caution is also recommended, since /var/folders is temporary storage for a lot of applications. At minimum quit any other open applications and be prepared to restart.
Naturally any command involking "sudo" will only run within an administrative account. If you don't have an admin account, if the computer is not your personal property, if the computer returns an error when invoking "sudo" or if you simply have doubts or questions about what each element of these commands does, well that's simply nature's way of saying "call IT."

Using Archive Utility.app from Terminal
Hi there!
Does anybody know if it is possible to send commands or options to Archive Utility.app via Terminal?
It is possible to invoke Archive Utility.app and pass it the path to a zip file, and it will uncompress it. However, I would like to also pass it a destination path, and see what other options it may have.
Thanks in advance!
davewgIt's because this will be done via a script and I want to show a progress bar to the users, then they can see something is happening - Archive Utility.app has a very nice little progress bar! :o)

Archive Utility app in Mavericks is gone
After my last update my abiity to unzip files quit working. I can still zip files.
I looked for the Archive Utility app in System › Library › CoreServices. It is definitely not there. My CoreServices folder list goes from Applications (folder) to Automator Launcher.
How do I get the Archive Utility app back?dsharpe,
I had a look in my /System/Library/CoreServices folder, and between Applications and Automator Launcher.app I have Archive Utility.app and AuthBrokerAgent (which seems to be part of CoreFoundation networking).
You could boot into Recovery mode and select Reïnstall Mac OS X from the Mac OS X Utilities menu — that should restore Archive Utility and whatever else might be missing from your Mavericks installation. -
Missing the Archive Utility.app
Hello all,
It has taken me a while to discover this, but I am completely missing the Archive Utility that comes with the OS from the Core Services folder in the library. I cannot find the app anywhere on my computer and I think my kids have somehow deleted it. I cannot find a way to re-install that program from my system install disks, and I cannot find the program at Apple.com for download. Any suggestions? It is a pain not to have it in my system! Thanks for giving the directory path - I have wanted to do something about this app for some time and could find almost no information on it.
My system (OS 10.4.11) launches BOMArchivehelper.app as the default for various compressed files (.zip, .rar, etc.), and for this purpose it seems nearly, if not completely, useless. Instead I launch Stuffit (or right-click, "open with") and either open compressed files or drag and drop. Once in a while I forget and double click a file's Finder icon, and almost always regret it. Did this about two hours ago for a ~ 75 MB zip file and the little sourcer's apprentice is still grinding away with the progress bar moving about about 1 mm every 20 minutes. There is no program icon in the dock and if I call up the Force Quit Applications panel, the utility is no where to be seen.* I'm torn between ignoring the useless little troll of a program and shutting everything down, so I can reboot and get it out of my sight.
I finally reset the default for zip files to Stuffit, so it shouldn't happen again, but I'd like to know if there ius a real use for BOM, or is it just there because Apple felt obligated to include thi type of app in the operating system? -
Non writable temporary folder OSXserver
I have full admin access to a mini server OSX10.7 yet unable to unzip a file due to the temp folder being unavailable.
Ideas anyone how why this folder behaviour occurs?
File sharing with other users is ON for this machine, FileMakerServer is running, but that's it, no other services.
I am not too familiar with Lion, but what was the trick to get the temporary folder in view so I can check the r/w options?
TIA

Where is "Archive Utility" located at? pathname please
I can't seem to track down where "Archive Utility" lives in. What is the pathname? I can't find it in "search". I need to located it so that I can set my file to "Open With" Archive Utility automatically to decompress my file.
It's located at /System/Library/CoreServices/Archive Utility.app.

Hi All,
Just got the problem with Archive Utility. Getting Error 2, no such a directory. It works great with other applications
Any ideas?

Archive Utility brings up error message when trying to unarchive protected zip file
Hey there,
I've been zipping images with password protection using different applications, some with a Lightroom Plug-In Zip-Exporter, some with a stand alone app such as "Archiver". Now when I try to unzip these images on OSX 10.6 the Archive Utility brings up an the error: "Unable to unarchive "Name of File" into "Desktop". (Error 1 - Operation not permitted.) I'm logged in with an admin account. I tried this on a macbook pro and on an imac, both 10.6, same problem. Now when I try to unzip the file using third party such as Stuffit expander or Archiver, it unzips the files without a problem.
any idea what's wrong with the OSX Archive Utility?Nothing's wrong with it except that it doesn't support encrypted .zip files. You'll just have to use third-party software, or a Terminal command, to unzip those.

Pdf file causing archive utility to throw error
I have a couple of pdf files which cannot be compressed without an error. Supposing that the nasty file is called foo.pdf.
. In the Finder, right click on foo.pdf
. Select Compress "foo.pdf"
A file called foo.pdf.zip is created but an error pops up An error occurred while compressing a file. Strangely enough, the error window has a titlebar called "Copy".
When looking in the Console, there is always an error from mdworker listed:
2/24/2009 10:23:37 /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/Metadata.framework /Versions/A/Support/mdworker[20524] zip importer countered an error (2) scanning "/Path/to/foo.pdf.zip"
This same file also always errors out when trying to use -ditto- in a Terminal window. (See this minithread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1724912 )
FWIW, attempting to open foo.pdf.zip causes the Archive Utility to throw the error
Unable to unarchive "foo.pdf.zip" into "Wherever".
Error 1 - Operation not permitted
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the problem?
BillNothing's wrong with it except that it doesn't support encrypted .zip files. You'll just have to use third-party software, or a Terminal command, to unzip those.

Archive utility "Error 32 Broken Pipe"
I'm looking for some way to fix archive utility. It will not open any .tar files, and I can not do it from the command line either. When archive utility tries to open the .tar files, it gives an error message: "Error 32 Broken Pipe" always. Is there a solution to this?
Using version 10.5.8.
ThanksSo, what do you expect us to do? We can't contact the Apple Software Engineering team, either.
If you don't want to reinstall to get Archive Utility working again, use tar in the Terminal. Type man tar at the prompt for help on using it. -
Apple Configurator error app's identifier is missing when creating a deployment profile.
Hello,
I have a Bretford Powersync cart and I have a Macbook Pro with Apple Configurator on it.
I don't have any iPads yet connected they will come in next week, there will 30 of them.
I'm creating a profile and payload in Configurator on the Macbook right now and when I add Apps to be part of the package that gets sent to the iPads, it's giving me the error "App's Identifier is Missing". I'm just highlighting a cell structure app that is free that I downloaded and trying to add it.
I heard you have to add the .ipa file, but I can't find an .ipa file anywhere. When I search for .ipa it just shows me the same Cell Structure App icon and I end up getting the same error.
Just trying to get around this error message.
Thanks,
MattIt won't let me edit my post, so I'm typing this reply to add...
I tried taking the version number out of the title. It looked like there were two spaces in the title "Grammar Games by Tap to Learn". So I even made sure that matched. I still can't import my codes. Any other things to try would be really appreciated. -
It appears that I have "lost" my archive utility. It no longer exists. Therefore, I cannot open any .zip files or .app or, anything! How can I get it back? Or is there a different method?
You can restore a new copy as follows:
How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD. However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.
In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
• Click on the "Go" button .....
• Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
Extract or Install........
7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
11. Type in your password, click “OK”
• Pacifist will begin to extract files.
12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
Notes.....
• Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
Stop
Leave original alone
Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages
You can also download TheUnarchiver - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate. -

here said not find the remote partner, but in B2B server, can ping Echoserver.
what is wrong?Hello again,
I have tried all different combinations with the IP addresses and host names, but to no avail. Then I changed the Trading Partner Identification Type from MLLP Id to Sending Application (one of the customer requirements is to be able to identify the Trading Partner by the combination of Sending App/Sending Facility, since they are running multiple HL7 applications on one host). However, I still see the same error in the log file - for some reason, B2B is still trying to identify the Trading Partner by the MLLP Id. Redeploying the configuration didn't help, the requested identification type is ignored.
Please help! If needed, I can send the B2B log file, but maybe I'm missing something obvious.
BTW, the customer has installed the patch for bug 6439217 on October 10th. The B2B version is 10.1.2.2.0.
Thanks in advance!

I want to put a bit more time aside this week to explain things I see in Java to my old brain (I don't quite 'get it' like you younger people :-)) I often see things like this in example code: import com.macfaq.io.SafeBufferedReader;and it's crossed

Someone asked me what will happen if someone marries, gets divorced and/or remarries. What name do you choose? I suggested that you could use "aka" for also known as, but that gets cumbersome. Maybe go by the first name? But what if there are several
