Notation and chord symbols

I use the notation part of logic a lot and have can't get chord symbols to line up and take the space they need when there are no actual notes within that bar.  So for example I want to print a chord sheet along with a stave but no notation.  Logic places the chords in such a way as to be confusing and messy to the reader.  Is there a trick?  There usually is.  Thanks

Hi
One solution could be to adjust the "max. number of bars per line" (in Page view):
Settings:Score:Global
Alternatively, you could use the Layout Tool to shuffle bars around to make some space, again in Page View

    Text Styles and Fonts in L8 are for some reason now two different windows - complicated by the fact that when you select a Text Style ( ie Chord Symbol, Plain Text etc etc ) it does not highlight properly and clearly and the Font box opens and does a weird little jump...?
    However, if you double click on a Text Style, *even though it does not appear selected*, you need to also click on the font name next to it - in the Text Style box ( right hand column)
    It then brings up the Font box on the right as a separate window. Here you click on a different font and the font of say the Plain Text will change ( if that was what you selected).
    Visually you would expect to see the highlighted in the Left hand Text Styles box, the one which you were wanting to change, but Logic as it is now does not see fit to do this.. and you have to remember which one you were wishing to change the font on.
    Then in the right hand box of fonts, you can change the font and you will notice that the Text Style name of the font has changed
    I hope this is of use
    good luck

    PS double clicking on anything seems to be the preferred way to change it

  • Notation in L8 - chord symbols and brackets

    Hello again -
    I've seen this question a couple of times, and wondered if anyone yet had an answer/workaround... The chord symbols in L8 seem a bit ugly - I can change the font fine, but is there any way I can:
    1 - bring the 7 part of a G7 chord more in line with the G? It seems so high as to be almost disconnected from the chord!
    2 - reduce the overall size of the symbol in a G-over-D type chord?
    Also, I'm working on very simple piano/vocal parts and am getting the hang of joining them together, but at the moment I can't seem to get rid of a bracket that is joining all three staves together. What I want is all three staves joined at the beginning of each line by a single thin line (like a bar line), then the two piano staves joined by a curly bracket. At the moment I have this, but there is an additional thick, straight bracket (almost like a repeat sign without the dots) that I don't want. How do I get rid of it?
    Thanks!
    Joe

    I've solved my first problem - RTFM! - and have found the chord editing box, but now have a new problem. I have a pause sign over the final chord, and it's slightly out of alignment, and I don't seem to be able to select it independently of the note it is attached to?

  • Chord Symbols: 3 Display Questions

    Been using Logic for a while now (first with Express 7.2; then Logic Studio since its debut) -- though would still label myself a novice. Am hoping some of the pros here can help clarify a couple of points re the display of Chord Symbols:
    Question 1):
    I was happy to recently discover that unlike both the Transport window and the little box in the top right of the Piano Roll, the Chord option within Global Tracks does show the inversions -- “F/C” as opposed to simply “F” for example.
    is there any way to set the Transport window, the Piano Roll, etc. to do the same?
    Question 2):
    Other than simply repositioning those blue chord symbols which appear in the Score window (after selecting the Insert Chords function), or editing them by double-clicking on them, are there any cleverly-hidden formatting options as well: font, font size, making the bottom letter smaller than the root letter, etc? Or has that kind of window-dressing not yet been built in?
    Question 3):
    If I change the actual notes of a chord (say by dragging some of them up or down in the Piano Roll), and if the chords in that region have already been analyzed, is there a way to “re-analzye” just that one chord, or just the one region of which it’s a part, without everything going wonky?
    By wonky, I mean that when I’ve tried to do this, many of the other chord symbols suddenly change, some go out of alignment with the measure to which they belong, and chords from other regions disappear altogether. And in the Edit Menu it talks about how I’ve just Inserted a Transposition Change, even though the region I had selected contained no transpositions whatsoever. (And the same thing seems to happen regardless of whether the “Change Display Only” option is checked or not.)
    So I simply Undo, and then manually enter the correct new chord name. But I’m guessing the above paragraph reflects some basic misunderstanding I must have about how the Analzye function is supposed to work. So if anyone could set me straight (or point me in the right RTFM direction) on that point, I’d be grateful.
    Thanks,

    Well, no takers after two weeks, but at least I can now answer one of the above questions myself for the benefit of anyone searching this topic.
    Re Question 2, yes you CAN format the chord symbols imported onto a Score Editor page. Just click on the small Text button near the top of the Score window, and from the drop down list which appears choose "Text Styles...". That gives you a window with a list of a dozen or so elements (two of which are "Chord Root" and "Chord Ext."). Double-Clicking in the column to the right of any of those elements in turn opens a standard Font window which lets you format away -- it even offers options for that particular element to be boxed or circled. Only restriction is it looks like any changes you make are global to that Project for that particular element, which is what you'd want (for the sake of visual consistency) 99% of the time anyway.
    Only follow-up question would be: is there any way to make any of those text formatting changes the default for all future projects when accessing the Score Editor?
    Meantime, would still like to hear from anyone with thoughts on Question 1 (getting the Transport window to display chords with their inversions, a la the Global Tracks display) and/or Question 3 (is there a clean way to re-Analyze a region in which you may have changed some of the chords -- or is that just an unpredictably "buggy" area still to be avoided?)
    Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

  • Score Editor: Reduce size of individual chord symbols?

    The Logic chord fonts - bless them - have always produced very unwieldy symbols when you add a bass note, as in the examples below. I am always aching to reduce the size of the invidual chord symbols ( Eb over G ... Eb over Bb) because they clutter up the score, while keeping the other chords the same size.
    Is there any way whatsover to do this? The Resize Tool does not seem to work on them. Nor are Chord Symbols convertible to plain text objects - either severally or individually ( as the Song Title is).
    All suggestions welcomed

    !http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/oo82/dogliege/Picture1-3.png!

    if i understand you correctly, you would be advised to use a different score style to hide the rests, and the format tool to drag bars into different positions.
    you might consider also using the global format constant spacing, or limiting the number of bars displayed on a line.
    there are lots of ways round this - you also can insert a user barline that will hide it on print out. one thing you can't do is drag a barline. perhaps more detail about what you are trying to achieve might help if this hasn't answered it for you.

  • Chord symbol question

    Hi,
    I often make simple Lead Sheets with the song's melody, lyrics, chords and maybe some repeat symbols.. Nice and easy in Logic.
    What I don't like is that if I have a chord like G/F, the letter F is placed lower than the letter G. It does accentuate that the "right hand chord" is G and the bass note an F, but it takes much more room on the staff, and I find it a bit messy next to the "normal chords".
    Is there any option that I can choose to have the letters these chords on the same height??? I have been searching the manual and the menus, but no luck so far.
    Thanks!!
    Regards,
    Jaap

    thanks - I hadnt thought of the resize tool... it does not seem to work on chord symbols but useful of course for other objects. Click and dragging with the size tool shows the scale change from + to - 16 but no change occurs in the size. Best workaround as been to fiddle with the chord and root font size...

  • Score Editor: Best chord symbol font?

    What is the best combination of 1) font and 2) size for Chord Root and Chord Extension? ...for jazz and pop parts
    PS Anybody notice if the Chord Symbol fonts/implementation has improved or changed in L8? I still have difficulty getting the chords looking really well sized and "professional" looking. Would appreciate a word from someone who really has nailed this aspect... ie font and actual size setting

    Thanks for your reply Mark .. but I am looking for some specific info here. I want to know what EXACT font and size is optimum - from someone who uses Logic's Score Editor to turn out parts for pro sessions/band parts etc.
    I have spent ages experimenting like you describe - but cannot find a combination of font and size that is really professional looking. Usually the accidental is too small or too large or too far away from the Root of the Chord. I am familiar with all the usual parameters in the Score preferences etc ... but the chord symbols still dont look that great to me. Usable yes .. but not great.
    If there is anyone out there with a specific favourite combination, I would much appreciate a word from you .. here -

  • Score Editor: disappearing chord symbols

    Very annoyingly, after inserting chord symbols with the chord tool, the chord symbols have suddenly started disappearing after I TAB out of them to move to the next bar, or they disappear as soon as I click somewhere else to de-select.
    I cannot tell if this is a bug ( though I suspect it is) or some element of the score editor I am unaware of.
    After the chord disappears and I re-insert it. Same thing happens.
    Looking in the Event list shows that there are actually three chords inserted there as META events. But it seems they have disappeared for ever from the score...
    All suggestions appreciated.

  • Input of Chord Symbols into the software

    Ok - I give up. I have Garageband version 8.0 but it does not have a feature to input chord symbols thereby actually creating your own tune with a specific genre and your own unique chord changes. The new genres in Magic Garageband are great, but I can't input my own chords! What software do I need to get this job done? Logic? I'm looking for the Mac alternative to Band in a Box, which worked great when I had a PC but generates all kinds of error messages on my Mac. Does the Mac have a comparable program that offers different genres of music AND the ability to input different chords? Help!!

    Logic allows the use of chord symbols ( A7, Adelta7, BbSus4) etc, in the score view.
    Cheers

  • Missing prototype and Undefined Symbol errors

    So, I am using an Opal Keyy XEM3005 board.
    Depending on the documentation I read, this board has a native ANSI C interface with a C++ wrapper.
    In their forums, they say to rename the ".cpp" file to "c", and then go forward with calling the default constructor & keep track of the pointer.  Their functions are all in an externally loadable DLL.
    Well and good.
    Their API documentatin is available here:  http://www.opalkelly.com/library/FrontPanelAPI/
    I have written a REALLY simple app to ease my way in - it does nothing more than allow the user to throw a switch, and when this happens, it goes off to connect to the board:
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    #include <cvirte.h>
    #include <userint.h>
    #include "Try1.h"
    #include "XEM.h"
    #define _WIN32_WINNT 0x0501
    //#define _WIN32
    #include <windows.h>
    static int panelHandle;
    static okFrontPanel_HANDLE    XEM_Device;
    int __stdcall WinMain (HINSTANCE hInstance, HINSTANCE hPrevInstance,
    LPSTR lpszCmdLine, int nCmdShow)
    if (InitCVIRTE (hInstance, 0, 0) == 0)
    return -1;    /* out of memory */
    if ((panelHandle = LoadPanel (0, "Try1.uir", PANEL)) < 0)
            return -1;
        DisplayPanel (panelHandle);
        RunUserInterface ();
        DiscardPanel (panelHandle);
        return 0;
    int CVICALLBACK Connect (int panel, int control, int event,
            void *callbackData, int eventData1, int eventData2)
        int    Value = 0;
        switch (event)
            case EVENT_COMMIT:
                GetCtrlVal(PANEL, PANEL_CONNECT_SWITCH, &Value);
                SetCtrlVal(PANEL, PANEL_CONNECT_LED, Value);
                if( Value )
                    XEM_Connect(XEM_Device);
                else
                    XEM_Disconnect(XEM_Device);
                break;
        return 0;
    int CVICALLBACK Quit (int panel, int control, int event,
            void *callbackData, int eventData1, int eventData2)
        switch (event)
            case EVENT_COMMIT:
                QuitUserInterface (0);
                break;
        return 0;
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    This, of course, works fine by itself (with empty _Connect() and _Disconnect() functions)
    I then started working with the XEM_Connect function.
    The first step is to run their LoadDLL function as such:
    int XEM_Connect ( okFrontPanel_HANDLE    XEM_Device )
        int    NoDevices = 0;    //    Number of devices attached to the PC
        //    Load the DLL (?)
        // Load the FrontPanel DLL
        if (FALSE == okFrontPanelDLL_LoadLib(NULL))
            printf("Could not load FrontPanel DLL\n");
            exit(-1);
        return XEM_SUCCESS;
    And this would compile and run just fine.
    Now, when I added the functions to start trying to get info about the device, I started getting "missing prototype" errors.
    int XEM_Connect ( okFrontPanel_HANDLE    XEM_Device )
        int    NoDevices = 0;    //    Number of devices attached to the PC
        //    Load the DLL (?)
        // Load the FrontPanel DLL
        if (FALSE == okFrontPanelDLL_LoadLib(NULL))
            printf("Could not load FrontPanel DLL\n");
            exit(-1);
        //    Find out how many devices are attached
        XEM_Device = okFrontPanel_Construct(  );
    //    XEM_Device = okCFrontPanel( void );
    //    NoDevices = GetDeviceCount( );
        printf("%d OK devices attached\n", NoDevices);
        //    Call the contructor?
    //    okCFrontPanel ();
        return XEM_SUCCESS;
    Now, I searched the forums and found the bits about adding #define _WIN32_WINNT 0x0501 prior to inclusion of windows.h.  Did that.  No joy.
    Then I searched some more and found the bit about changing the build options to uncheck the "prototype required" flag.
    Done.
    This seemed to work at first (the above code could be built with no errors, and appeared to run).
    So I thought maybe I had it, and added the next line, so:
    int XEM_Connect ( okFrontPanel_HANDLE    XEM_Device )
        int    NoDevices = 0;    //    Number of devices attached to the PC
        //    Load the DLL (?)
        // Load the FrontPanel DLL
        if (FALSE == okFrontPanelDLL_LoadLib(NULL))
            printf("Could not load FrontPanel DLL\n");
            exit(-1);
        //    Find out how many devices are attached
        XEM_Device = okFrontPanel_Construct(  );
        OpenBySerial( XEM_Device, "UaLgzvVpBJ" );
    //    XEM_Device = okCFrontPanel( void );
    //    NoDevices = GetDeviceCount( );
        printf("%d OK devices attached\n", NoDevices);
        //    Call the contructor?
    //    okCFrontPanel ();
        return XEM_SUCCESS;
    Now it doesn't complain about no prototypes (duh), but instead I get linker errors:
        Undefined symbol '_OpenBySerial@0' referenced in "XEM.c".
    So, dredging through the .h and .c files, I found a couple of things:
    in the okFrontPanel.c file I found the following:
    okDLLEXPORT ok_ErrorCode DLL_ENTRY
    okFrontPanel_OpenBySerial(okFrontPanel_HANDLE hnd, const char *serial)
        if (_okFrontPanel_OpenBySerial)
    ;  return((*_okFrontPanel_OpenBySerial)(hnd, serial));
        return(ok_UnsupportedFeature);
    In the okFrontPanel.h file I found:
    and also:
    okDLLEXPORT ok_ErrorCode DLL_ENTRY okFrontPanel_OpenBySerial(okFrontPanel_HANDLE hnd, const char *serial);
    So, I see them in the .h & .c files, but the linker is bombing out.
    I smell a problem with actual code to link being in the DLL...  How do I resolve this, any ideas?  Or am I doing something so stupidly (and obviously) wrong that I'm being blinded to it?

    Hi tomii,
    My suspicion is that these issues are due to using a C++ dll in a C environment. There are inherent challenges with performing such an operation as you have to make sure all your parameters and settings are correct.
    I also could not find the documentation that the Opal Kelly dll is ANSI C but it sounds like you can use this in C with some reconfiguration. I would recommend using their forums to get more information on what steps need to take place to get things working in ANSI C.
    From the information you provided, I did find some resources on the missing prototype error and undefined symbol issue with the linker.
    For the missing prototype I found a thread of someone actually using LabWindows and seeing this compiler error you may want to look at
    http://bytes.com/topic/c/answers/695019-missing-prototype
    I found a few cases where using a function definition of int func(void) removes such issue when int func() does not.
    Another link I found that may be worth a look can be found at http://www.parashift.com/c++-faq-lite/mixing-c-and-cpp.html
    It gives some good pointers to mixing C and C++ code. Some of it may be applicible in your case.
    And, a resource for your undefined symbol linking issue.
    http://www.cprogramming.com/tutorial/compiler_linker_errors.html
    Hopefully these resources will give some context for getting things compiling and working with your dll.
    Good luck!

Yet when I try to restore it with Itunes on my windows 7 laptop it says the network connection has been reset. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network is active, or try again later. My phone has the itunes logo and charger symbol on it, as well as an arrow pointing at the Itunes logo. After holding the sleep button down or even doing the hard reset the same screen comes up on my phone regardless of whether it is plugged in or not to my computer. I have turned my computer off and on again. It is plugged in and charging as it's battery life is very short. I also reset my modem and the same error message pops up. The only option on my computer when my phone is plugged in is to restore it. My firewall also allows Itunes through it. I have literally tried everything I know being someone who knows very little about technology. I also do not want to hear about how the update worked for other people. My phone has been in recovery mode for 5 hours at least now so it will just make me more frustrated if a bunch of people post about how the update worked for them.

    Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything... and you must continue with the Recovery...

  • I was recently given an ipod touch and the only screen it will show is a usb cable and itunes symbol. I've tried the troubleshooting stuff on this website but it still won't work. Any ideas as to how i can fix this?

    My Ipod touch only shows a usb wire and itunes symbol when i turn it on. it does not show up on my itunes or in my computer. ive tried the troubleshooting stuff(reseting the ipod, reinstalling the newest itunes, restarting the computer) and nothing has changed. my ipod shuffle connects to my itunes just fine though.

    First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
    Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
    If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
    At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
    If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.
