Question

I have yet to resolve this issue. iPhone 4S works fine with iCloud.
Thus far I have done the following.
- reinstalled OS; basically an archive an install from the bootup menu.
- pram reset
- smc reset (power cycle)
- single user mode
- repaired disk and permissions in disk utility
- trashing system preferences plist from user library & cache folders from system and user libraries; rebooting then emptying the trash
- changing icloud password; then updated everywhere it was used
- opened ports on router; 993,480, 143, & 80; network is WPA with 10 digit numerical passphrase, no firewalls or antivirus on router
- removing and readding iCloud account to mail application
- mail also doesn't work and never has with my icloud account. I know it is a separate issue but mail connection doctor prompts:
"could not connect to this iCloud IMAP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. if is does not, deselect "Use SSL" checkbox in teh Advanced tab of Account preferences"
     *Needs to be 'imap.mail.me.com" No matter how many times I remove or re-add the iCloud account, mail will prompt needs an incoming mail server. It will not let me put it in there, just has a 'mail.example.com'
On 10.6.8 I used to be able to move mailboxes to desktop, delete everything in mail folder, reboot, put back mail boxes and everything so as to really reset the mail application, but ML looks like it has disabled that as a troubleshooting feature... *but I guess the resintallation of of ML does the same..
The only logical explaination I can think of which would be in congruence with the mail issue, is that iCloud has messed up the location of where my all data is on the server... and there is not a way to fix it. I'm considering creating a whole new Apple ID but that is my last resort.

Thank you for the reply. I am on a home network. ISP is centurylink DSL service located in midwest, so USA. WPA security type with 10 digit numerical password. I verified IMAP does work on my network, my gmail account adds perfectly fine in mail on the mac. I also checked that there is not a proxy server setup. *this has been occuring in all 3 of the places I have lived in the past 5 years or so, no matter the ISP.
What is really bizarre is my iphone 4s works fine with everything. Notes sync with icloud. Mail syncs with my icloud and gmail accounts fine. The iphone is also connecting to the same wireless network. Another thing, my iphone works with a hotmail account too, which is POP (dang microsoft), but I wonder why apple won't let it work on mail on the macs.
