Number of Hosts in a Replication Group

Hello,
I just implemented Replication in my application, and was able to get it to work fight away, and quite nicely at that I might add. However, I do have an issue I would like some help with:
The agent that is part of the replication group starts up and reads a configuration file that specifies host and port information on other members of the group. It then creates ReplicationHostAddress entries for each host:port combination and adds them to the replication group using the replicationManagerAddRemoteSite() call on the EnvironmentConfig. I am currently setting the number of replication sites via the setReplicationNumSites() call to 1 + the number of remote sites specified.
All of this works fine, I can see elections being called and a master being elected. However, I cannot start if one and only one member of the group is available to start. It waits forever until at least one other agent starts up. Is there a way I can configure things so that my agent will start up even if there are no other agents available to talk to, and allow new entries to join the replication group as it suits them? I even tried changing the ReplicationManagerAckPolicy, but that doesn't seem to have any effect.
Thanks,
Prashanth

Yes, there are some tricks you can play with the setting of the "number of sites" configuration variable. But you have to be careful. We use that number in elections. If the number is wrong, you run the risk of choosing a master from within a minority subset of the total replication group. This could lead to a duplicate master situation. When the two subsets are eventually reunited, and the duplicate master situation is detected, one of the two masters will "lose", and will be forced to discard any transactions that the other master did not already have. In other words, you will lose transactions that you may have thought had already been durably stored and replicated.

  • Cannot add multiple members of a failover cluster to a DFSR replication group

    Server 2012 RTM. I have two physical servers, in two separate data centers 35 miles apart, with a GbE link over metro fibre between them. Both have a large (10TB+) local RAID storage arrays, but given the physical separation there is no physical shared storage.
    The hosts need to be in a Windows failover cluster (WSFC), so that I can run high-availability VMs and SQL Availability Groups across these two hosts for HA and DR. VM and SQL app data storage is using a SOFS (scale out file server) network share on separate
    servers.
    I need to be able to use DFSR to replicate multi-TB user data file folders between the two local storage arrays on these two hosts for HA and DR. But when I try to add the second server to a DFSR replication group, I get the error:
    The specified member is part of a failover cluster that is already a member of the replication group. You cannot add multiple members for the same cluster to a replication group.
    I'm not clear why this has to be a restriction. I need to be able to replicate files somehow for HA & DR of the 10TB+ of file storage. I can't use a clustered file server for file storage, as I don't have any shared storage on these two servers. Likewise
    I can't run a HA single DFSR target for the same reason (no shared storage) - and in any case, this doesn't solve the problem of replicating files between the two hosts for HA & DR. DFSR is the solution for replicating files storage across servers with
    non-shared storage.
    Why would there be a restriction against using DFSR between multiple hosts in a cluster, so long as you are not trying to replicate folders in a shared storage target accessible to both hosts (which would obviously be a problem)? So long as you are not replicating
    folders in c:\ClusterStorage, there should be no conflict.
    Is there a workaround or alternative solution?

    Yes, I read that series. But it doesn't address the issue. The article is about making a DFSR target highly available. That won't help me here.
    I need to be able to use DFSR to replicate files between two different servers, with those servers being in a WSFC for the purpose of providing other clustered services (Hyper-V, SQL availability groups, etc.). DFSR should not interfere with this, but it
    is being blocked between nodes in the same WSFC for a reason that is not clear to me.
    This is a valid use case and I can't see an alternative solution in the case where you only have two physical servers. Windows needs to be able to provide HA, DR, and replication of everything - VMs, SQL, and file folders. But it seems that this artificial
    barrier is causing us to need to choose either clustered services or DFSR between nodes. But I can't see any rationale to block DFSR between cluster nodes - especially those without shared storage.
    Perhaps this blanket block should be changed to a more selective block at the DFSR folder level, not the node level.

  • Is It Possible to Add a Fileserver to a DFS Replication Group Without Connectivity to FSMO Roles Holder DC But Connectivity to Site DC???

    I apologize in advance for the rambling novella, but I tried to include as many details ahead of time as I could.
    I guess like most issues, this one's been evolving for a while, it started out with us trying to add a new member
    to a replication group that's on a subnet without connectivity to the FSMO roles holder. I'll try to describe the
    layout as best as I can up front.
    The AD only has one domain & both the forest & domain are at 2008R2 function level. We've got two sites defined in
    Sites & Services, Site A is an off-site datacenter with one associated subnet & Site B with 6 associated subnets, A-F.
    The two sites are connected by a WAN link from a cable provider. Subnets E & F at Site B have no connectivity to Site A
    across that WAN, only what's available through the front side of the datacenter through the public Internet. The network
    engineering group involved refuses to route that WAN traffic to those two subnets & we've got no recourse against that
    decision; so I'm trying to find a way to accomplish this without that if possible.
    The FSMO roles holder is located at Site A. I know that I can define a Site C, add Subnets E & F to that site, & then
    configure an SMTP site link between Sites A & C, but that only handles AD replication, correct? That still wouldn't allow me, for example,
    to enumerate DFS namespaces from subnets E & F, or to add a fileserver on either of those subnets as a member to an existing
    DFS replication group, right? Also, root scalability is enabled on all the namespace shares.
    Is there a way to accomplish both of these things without transferring the FSMO roles from the original DC at Site A to, say,
    the bridgehead DC at Site B?
    When the infrastructure was originally setup by a former analyst, the topology was much more simple & everything was left
    under the Default First Site & no sites/subnets were setup until fairly recently to resolve authentication issues on
    Subnets E & F... I bring this up just to say, the FSMO roles holder has held them throughout the build out & addition of
    all sorts of systems & I'm honestly not sure what, if anything, the transfer of those roles will break.
    I definitely don't claim to be an expert in any of this, I'll be the first to say that I'm a work-in-progress on this AD design stuff,
    I'm all for R'ing the FM, but frankly I'm dragging bottom at this point in finding the right FM. I've been digging around
    on Google, forums, & TechNet for the past week or so as this has evolved, but no resolution yet.
    On VMs & machines on subnets E & F when I go to DFS Management -> Namespace -> Add Namespaces to Display..., none show up
    automatically & when I click Show Namespaces, after a few seconds I get "The namespaces on DOMAIN cannot be enumerated. The
    specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted". If I run a dfsutil /pktinfo, nothing shows except \sysvol
    but I can access the domain-based DFS shares through Windows Explorer with the UNC path \\DOMAIN-FQDN\Share-Name then when
    I run a dfsutil /pktinfo it shows all the shares that I've accessed so far.
    So either I'm doing something wrong, or, for some random large, multinational company, every sunbet & fileserver one wants
    to add to a DFS Namespace has to be able to contact the FSMO roles holder? Or, are those ADs broken down with a child domain
    for each Site & a FSMO roles holder for that child domain is located in each site?

    Hi,
    A DC in siteB should helpful. I still not see any article mentioned that a DFS client have to connect to PDC every time trying to access a DFS domain based namespace.
    Please see following article. I pasted a part of it below:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc782417(v=ws.10).aspx
    Domain controllers play numerous roles in DFS:
    Domain controllers store DFS metadata in Active Directory about domain-based namespaces. DFS metadata consists of information about entire namespace, including the root, root targets, links, link targets, and settings. By default,root servers
    that host domain-based namespaces periodically poll the domain controller acting as the primary domain controller (PDC) emulator master to obtain an updated version of the DFS metadata and store this metadata in memory.
    So Other DC needs to connect PDC for an updated metadata.
    Whenever an administrator makes a change to a domain-based namespace, the
    change is made on the domain controller acting as the PDC emulator master and is then replicated (via Active Directory replication) to other domain controllers in the domain.
    Domain Name Referral Cache
    A domain name referral contains the NetBIOS and DNS names of the local domain, all trusted domains in the forest, and domains in trusted forests. A
    DFS client requests a domain name referral from a domain controller to determine the domains in which the clients can access domain-based namespaces.
    Domain Controller Referral Cache
    A domain controller referral contains the NetBIOS and DNS names of the domain controllers for the list of domains it has cached. A DFS client requests a domain controller referral from a domain controller (in the client’s domain)
    to determine which domain controllers can provide a referral for a domain-based namespace.
    Domain-based Root Referral Cache
    The domain-based root referrals in this memory cache do not store targets in any particular order. The targets are sorted according to the target selection method only when requested from the client. Also, these referrals are based on DFS metadata stored
    on the local domain controller, not the PDC emulator master.
    Thus it seems to be acceptable to have a disconnect between sites shortly when cache is still working on siteB.

  • License Setup file versus Serial Number Only Hosting

    Could someone list the pros and cons of license setup file versus serial number only hosting. I understand that the latter requires the least effort to set up and manage, but what would make me choose the former?
    Many thanks

    SJW,
    I'm think you're referring to the models where the license pool is hosted at Adobe. The two models are called "Serial Number-Only at Adobe" and "Adobe-hosted with custom options."
    What's common between the two
    - Pool of licenses is hosted at Adobe
    - Customer obtains e-license reports on the Licensing Website (LWS)
    - E-license is downloaded via the Internet (e-license is around 3 KB)
    Differences - Serial No. Only
    - Single pool of e-licenses, identified by the serial number, shared by the different groups in the organization that owns that serial number.
    - Reports on LWS show the total licenses available/downloaded, overdraft licenses available/downloaded, secondary use licenses, and recovered licenses.
    - Upon launching Acrobat, End-users see a dialog box indicating to download an e-license.
    - No changes to the way Acrobat 8 is installed (just install the application with the serial number as usual).
    Differences - Adobe-hosted with custom options
    - Individual pool of e-licenses, identified by the identifier of the each individual Ship To in the order. Not shared across the the organization.
    - Same as before, reports show the information about the customer's license pool. However, this option allows companies to have the request to download the e-license to capture the name of the machine so the reports will show the name of every machine that has downloaded (or returned) and e-license.
    - Upon launching Acrobat, End-users *may* see a dialog box indicating to download an e-license.
    - The installation of Acrobat 8 changes. In this case, Acrobat requires a Client Setup file that configures Acrobat 8 with the custom options the customer wants to setup
    - Custom options: display or not the dialog to the end-user (silent e-license download) and include/not include machine name in LWS e-license reports.
    In summary, the Serial Number-Only method is simpler but does not allow for customization (which in many cases that's just fine).

    Arthik,
    I think I know what may have happened.
    As I can see you are trying to create support for an updateable materialized view.
    You have to make sure the name of the schema that owns the materialized view is the same as the schema owner of the master table (at master site).
    From the code you have shown, I bet the owner of table EMP is SCOTT.
    From the other hand, you want to create materialized view EMP_MV under schema KARTHIK that refers to table SCOTT.EMP at master site.
    According to the documentation, the schema name used in DBMS_REPCAT.CREATE_MVIEW_REPOBJECT must be same as the schema that owns the master table.
    Please check the documentation at the link below
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14227/rarrcatpac.htm#i109228
    I tried to reproduce your example in my environment, and I got exactly the same error which actually confirms my assumption that the reason for the error is the fact that you tried to create the materialized view in a schema with different name than the one where master table exists.
    I'll skip some of the steps that I used to create the replication environment.
    I have two databases, DB1.world and DB2.world
    On DB2.world I will generate replication support for table EMP which belongs to user SCOTT
    SQL> conn scott/*****@DB2.world

      4         sname => 'MYUSER',

    ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_REPCAT", line 1332
    ORA-06512: at line 3 I reproduced exactly the same error message.
    So the problem is clearly in the schema name that owns the materialized view.
    Now lets see if what would happen if I create the MV under schema SCOTT which has the same name as the schema on DB2.world where the master table exists.
    SQL>conn scott/****@DB1.world
    Connected.
    SQL>CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW SCOTT.EMP_MV
      2    REFRESH FAST
      3    FOR UPDATE
      4    AS SELECT EMPNO, ENAME, JOB, MGR, SAL, COMM, DEPTNO, HIREDATE
      5*      FROM   [email protected];
    Materialized view created.
    SQL>conn mviewadmin/******@DB1.world
    Connected.
    SQL> BEGIN
      2       DBMS_REFRESH.ADD(
      3         name => 'MVIEWADMIN.MV_REFRESH_GROUPA',
      4         list => 'SCOTT.EMP_MV',
      5         lax => TRUE);
      6    END;
      7  /
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.And now lets run CREATE_MVIEW_REPOBJECT.
    SQL>   BEGIN
      2       DBMS_REPCAT.CREATE_MVIEW_REPOBJECT(
      3         gname => 'GROUPA',
      4         sname => 'SCOTT',
      5         oname => 'EMP_MV',
      6         type => 'SNAPSHOT',
      7         min_communication => TRUE);
      8    END;
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.As you can see everything works fine when the name of the schema owner of the MV at DB1.world is the same as the schema owner of the master table at DB2.world .

  • Same number range for two different series groups?

    Dear all,
    There are two scenarios
    1.Normal export under bond case, series group is 20 and number range maintained,running number is 300016
    2.Another scenario,where ARE1 document generation for Deemed exp customer(already customised) , series group is 30.
    But, client requirement is , for this second scenario also, system should pickup running number range of series group 20(under bond case)  as per excise legal requirement
    Ie running number is for series group 20 is 300016
    For the above deemed exp case (second scenario)it should pickup 300017
    And again when they do under bond case(first scenario), it should pick up 300018 like that
    Is it possible to maintain the same number range for two different series groups(20 and 30)?
    Even if you maintain the same number range for 30, as per running number range of 20
    Will the system update simultaneously the same number range for 20 and 30 series groups?
    Please suggest the way.

    With two different series groups, it is not possible to have the same number range. Even if you maintain it, they will be treated independently.
    Normally, you should not use different series groups if the same number range has to be used. In fact, the concept of series group has been developed to ensure that number ranges can be maintained separately.

    Hi,
    To get the depth using JMS you must create a QueueBrowse and browse the entire queue. Its generally horribly inefficient if you want to do it with any regularity.
    In Hermes I have had to write plugins that open separate connections to providers using their non-JMS APIs or JMX and get that kind of information that way.
    Look at the getDepth() method in this JBoss plugin for an example that uses JMX:
    http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/hermesjms/Hermes4/src/java/hermes/ext/jbossmq/JBossMQAdmin.java?view=markup
    And here is one for WebSphereMQ that uses one of its many APIs..

  • How to completly delete DFSR replication group in Windows 2008 R2?

    I just relete a DFSR replication group from DFS management console. Now I need to recreate it but it says the replication group already existed.
    So that mean there is still trace of that replication group. How can I delete it completely (but I keep the namespace)?

    Like John said, it's possible it hadn't replicated yet.
    You could also go into ADSI and see if there are still objects under CN=Topology,CN=(Your Namespace), cn=DFSR-GlobalSettings,CN=System,DC=domain,DC=com.

    I have delployed an servlet based application on a 3 node cluster. I have a simple POJO that I use to carry data in the session from a "confirm?" to "confirmed" page. This object implements serializable and only has String and int members. I put it in session using request.getSession().setAttribute("dto", myobject). For some reason it is not being replicated to the other nodes in the cluster. My weblogic.xml has "PersistentStoreType" set to "replicated_if_clustered". I am not seeing any serialization or other errors in the node logs.
              I have looked at information contained in the link below and I think we are doing everything right. http://support.bea.com/application_content/product_portlets/support_patterns/wls/HTTP_Session_Replication_Failures_Pattern.html
              The only thing that I noticed is that the "Replication Group" is not set for any of the servers in the cluster. Does this need to be set for replication to happen?

    Hi,
              Having replication group is optional. It is used only if you are implementing failover in cluster. For session replication one has to generally configure 3 things:
              - in memory replication
              - jdbc replication
              - file sytem replication
              for im memory replication,
              Step 1:
              make sure taht a client is accesing the cluseter using either
              - load balancing hardware
              - web servers with weblogic proxy plugin
              Step 2:
              specify the persistance type in weblogic.xml
              Thanks,

  • DFS - The replication group cannot be created - insufficient permissions - NOT DOMAIN ADMIN, LOCAL ADMIN

    Hi,
    I am trying to setup DFS replication on tow servers. I am local admin on the servers but NOT domain account. Is it possible to create Replication group anyway? or should i contact the Domain administrator to the job?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    We cannot use local administrator to create a dfs replication group. By default, Domain Admins group can create a dfs replication group. You could also delegate to a user or group the ability to create replication groups and the user must add to the local Administrators
    group on the namespace server.
    For more detailed information, please refer to the article below:

  • How to define replication groups?

              Hai All!
              Can anybody suggest steps in detail to define a groups in a cluster of
              servers for the purpose of inline memmory replication through console or by any
              other way? I am unable to find neccessary info regarding this in docs.
              Note i want help regarding how to define a group and not the assigning primary
              and secondary groups to the servers in a cluster.
              TIA
              Rgds

    Hi,
              For most situations, there is no need to define a replication group. Simply define
              the machines and servers in your cluster and denote which servers are located on
              which machines. WebLogic will do its best to make sure that the primary and
              secondary are not located on the same machine. Replication groups allow you to
              have more control over the selection of secondary server selection if you had some
              extraordinary situation where you needed something other than making sure the
              primary and secondary copies were on servers located on different machines.
              Hope this helps,
              Robert

  • Maximum number of hosts not allowed

    Our account should allow 3 simultaneous hosts, but it is only allowing 2.
    It says we have reached our maximum number of hosts.
    When I check the admin of the account it reads as it should: 3 hosts.
    Customer is waiting. Adobe nowhere to be found.
    Anyone have this issue or a resolution?
    Thanks,
    Seth
