Offending command: xshow

About a year ago, Mary Kay changed (more like a complete over haul) our intranet, I used to be able to print invoices but since the change, I cannot do it. I have been writing them manually.
The invoice is in PDF format. I can see perfectly fine on the screen but I get this error (see attached) when it prints. Can you help?

It would not hurt to use another reader such as Adobe Acrobat, however you may want to use the Mac App store and look for another reader, there are many to choose from, most are free.
Another thing to try is create another user Account (call it Test Account) and try using that account. If it works then you have discovered a software issue in your normal user account and need to narrow down your troubleshooting.

  • PDF Printing Error: "invalidfont", "Offending Command: xshow"

i saw similar discussions that were not exactly what I was looking for, so I decided to post my own:
I have a critically important document that I've created that is refusing to print correctly due to the errors in my thread title here. After a lot of trial and error (different machines, different OS's, etc.) we've determined that it is a problem with the font inclusion, however, the "offending" font(s) - it's an OpenType Google Font Family - is one that I've used in dozens of other PDF's, in all sorts of combinations and variants, and have never had an issue before this document. This is coming at a critically inconvenient time, given the nature of the project and given that the aforementioned font (Roboto), is part of our brand identity.
I have made a PDF with the type converted to outlines, but that balloons the file size up to around 11MB (from 278KB). I dont mind the conversion, but if there were a way to do this and reduce the size to something more manageable, I'd be thrilled (ideally <5 MB).
The document is ALL (relatively simple) vector imagery and fonts, and I've not yet experimented with the resolution slider in the text outlining portion of the PDF dialogue (have no idea how relevant this would be in a vector document, given that it's not RASTERIZING the outlined type).
Any help would be so tremendously appreciated.
    Thank you!!!

Thanks for the information. It actually does help narrow what the problem might be.
Further question. What happens if you try to print from Adobe Acrobat to this printer? Same problem?
Observation! The printer in question, the Konica Minolta Bizhub C364e, doesn't use Adobe PostScript, but rather, an Konica Minolta knockoff. Many of the printing issues that we have seen in the past associated with fonts are caused by these so-called “emulations” of Adobe PostScript. (And by the way, you should never outline or rasterize type to compensate for a bad RIP!) It would be helpful if you could try printing this same PDF file via either Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat to a real PostScript printer, such as a Xerox Phaser, ColorQube, or WorkCentre printers or similar printers from Ricoh or Canon (make sure they are recent models with Adobe PostScript 3 as opposed to emulation of Adobe PostScript. (Or you could bring the PDF file to FedEx Office and have them try to print it - they have printers with Adobe PostScript 3 provided by EFI Fiery RIPs!)
Another point. When saving PDF from Illustrator, make sure you use the PDF/X-4 output options. This preserves live transparency and color management.
Let us know if printing via Adobe Reader or Acrobat and/or printing to Adobe PostScript devices solves this issue.
If it doesn't, we definitely would like to see a sample of this problem here at Adobe. Possibly you could pare down the file to something that you could release to us (under NDA of course).

  • Printer prints ERROR: syntaxerror OFFENDING COMMAND: true cvt fpgm x -glyf

A colleague has mentioned to me that he has seen an apparently intermittent problem when printing from 10.6.6 (but thinks he saw it some time before that) in which a PostScript error page is printed instead of his document. Mac OS X is up to date. The printed page shows:
    ERROR: syntaxerror
OFFENDING COMMAND: true cvt fpgm x -glyf , ,head
    STACK:
    -mark-
    /sfnts
The keywords suggest to me that this is a TrueType typeface problem.
Frustratingly, he says he can't remember what application he was printing from, but I suspect that it was Microsoft Word 2008, as that is what he uses for document preparation.
I found another forum topic posting describing this problem - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9264701 - which is now closed and allegedly answered; the final advice was to run FontBook to verify the typefaces. I did this on the system in question, and only a few 'minor' errors were reported. Whether this somehow magically fixed the problem, I don't know.
The user updated Microsoft Office to the 2011 version at my suggestion, this being the only thing I can think might fix the problem. Since the problem was always intermittent, we're waiting to see if the problem reoccurs.
Does anyone know for sure what the cause and fix for the problem are?

Trouble printint to a Dell Laser MFP 1815dn.
Check if the Dell driver is PPC. If it is, and if you installed the first version of Apple's latest Security Update, then that's probably where the issue is, because it broke Rosetta, the software which runs PPC code under SL. Re-install the Sec Update (the problem is fixed in v1.1, which replaced the goofy version on Apple's servers) through Software Update or by downloading it again, then re-install the Dell driver, and try again.
Apple stuff is great, except for their casual disregard of their customers who want to use any product that is not Apple
I'm sorry, but that's non-sense. I'm no fan of Apple, but they're no better and no worse than any large corporation of this type. Mostly, they do things which make business sense as they see it -- which is exactly what you'd want, if you had serious money invested in Apple shares -- wouldn't you?
In this instance, it was up to Dell to release an Intel Mac driver for this printer/scanner, which is, what, 5 or 6 years old? If they didn't, it was probably because they decided it didn't make business sense for them to spend money on developing and testing one. Keep in mind that Dell and Apple and Microsoft and all the rest are in business to make money, not to support every single customer for ever and ever and a day.

  • HP LaserJet 1200: Prints; creates EXTRA sheet with Offending Command: D

After every printing job is completed *an extra page is printed* with the following:
    ERROR: undefined
    OFFENDING COMMAND: D
    STACK:
How can I stop this *unnecessary waste of paper* every time I print something?
    Please help!

What does work is the following:
Set your printer to NOT use Appletalk (through your browser).
Delete your printer and install it again. If you don't see it in the list select IP printer and use the printer's IP address
Make sure you use a HP driver and not the Generic driver. I used a Gutenprint driver with success on a LaserJet 1200 with a JetDirect network adapter.

    Thanks and Regards...

    Hi Guys,
thanks for all if you tried to help me out... The problem was just a tick box relating to PostScript.
I had to go to the printer setting and disable passthrough of postscript.
Mainly this was already answered in this adobe reader thread http://forums.adobe.com/thread/391758 with the printing problems. Just to add somethin more it is a problem that is faced when installing adobe 9.
    Thanks...

  • OFFENDING COMMAND:  definefont...  10.6.8

    Ronning 10.6.8
Occasionally I am sent files which open on screen but will not print, or print a few pages before printing a sheet with error message similar to
    OFFENDING COMMAND:  definefont
I have access to several printers ...Canon image pass fails ,  and Ricoh laserwriter fails ... a venerable HP laserjet is our saviour (but only B?W)
Is this because other users (PC users) are using variations of fonts that Mac cannot support?
    Any solution?
I noted that 10.6.7 users had similar issues. Our Macs are updated from the server and I trust that 10.6.8 has been vetted for  such issues?

A google search for the term "definefont" on HP's website seems to indicate that this might be a postscript error.  As you read the thread, it might offer some insights as to what might be happening.  This thread is for an HP printer in a MAC environment.  Other than that, I was going to suggest the normal procedure of running disk utility and to repair permissions.
    Hope that helps

  • Offending command -- pdf versus ps

    Hi all!
I compiled a pdf file with pdfLaTeX. I can open and
read it using Windows XP and Adobe Reader 9.2.
However, a friend of mine can not even open the file.
    He uses SuSE 10.3.
He persuaded me that there is a problem in the file,
not in his software. So I installed the Adobe Generic
PostScript Printer on my system to get more information.
Next I printed from the Adobe Reader via the PostScript
    Printer to a file.
A visual examination of the ps file did not show any
problems. Next I opened the file with GSView.
This worked and I scrolled page per page down
until on page 193 (out of 202), the following error
    occurred:

    ==========================
So there seems to be indeed a problem. What does
    [ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: HWWHOZ+MSAM7*1 ]
mean? How can I correct this error?
    Thanks!

I've had the same problem for a long time using InDesign CS5, 5,5 and 6. Whenever I try to print to my Lanier 655c printer via postscript, it comes out blotchy with some things printing and some not, kinda squarish and the next page is just text reading stack error. I always have to print with a PCL6 driver instead of PS and that works, but it seems I should be able to print PS with the Lanier ICM and have no problems. My printer technician has worked on this problem to no end. He says the printer has the latest drivers but not sure where the communication problem is happening.

  • Printing a Word 2013 file to a PDF, which prints the PDF, but when printing the gereated PDF to a laser printer an error occurs: Error: invalidfont Offending Command: show Stack: (  )

I was wondering if any else has had an problem with error codes printing PDF that has been generated from Word 2013 to Acrobat Xi Pro. I have converted fonts from local install to common fonts - Arial, and the same error occurs.
    Help!

    Thank you Bill,
you maybe right, there seems to be a localised issue as the PDF that has been created from Word 2013 can be printed, on the same printer I am using, by other members on the server with different versions of PDF.
    Still stuck though.

  • Offending command problem

Any ideas on how to resolve this problem?
    %%[Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: Rea ]%%
I create a postscript file from my Framemaker file then use Acrobat Distiller v7 to generate the tagged PDF. Interestingly, if I deselect the 'Generate Tagged PDF' option in the printing setting for Framemaker the problem doesn't occur.
And the file was ok the other day!

This was a known problem whose inadequate solution you found (turning off tagging). I do not remember there being another solution---other than upgrading. I'd recommend you ask in the Frame forum where you will find people with longer memories than mine.

  • HP LaserJet 2100TN Errors in Leopard

Greetings! First off, I must say that after searching the forums for the past hour, I've been impressed with this community, particularly Andrew (the HP developer). Unfortunately, I didn't find an answer, thus this posting!
I upgraded to Leopard about two months ago, and I get intermittent errors. I've outlined them below. I am connect via the IP JetDirect protocol.
The error usually comes when I'm printing certain graphics-intense files (such as a Microsoft Word document with several image files embedded). Here's an example of a page issued by the printer:
    ERROR: undefinedresult
    OFFENDING COMMAND: xshow
    STACK:
    [65.2 36.2 56.0 61.0 54.0 23.0 73.2 56.0 21.0 61.0 53.1 27.9999 23.0 0.0 ]
    (!"#$%&’#($)*&&)
If I connect to my HP LaserJet 3330 (via USB), I'm able to print the same file fine!

After the most recent security upgrade, my LaserJet 2100TN ceased to function completely (Error: Printer not responding).
I had emailed HP some time ago asking if and when they were going to support the Leopard upgrade with new drivers. I got the following response, which I finally did today, and it works beautifully. It even fixed the Tray 1, 2, manual feed issue that someone mentioned above.
    "Hello ,
Thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Commercial Solutions Center.
We understand that you are not able to print from OS 10.5 using your HP LaserJet 2100.
Regarding the Mac OS 10.5 when you make the upgrade or a brand new installation the Operating System should already come with the HP Drivers pre-installed and those are the ones who work with that OS. Also you can go to the Print & Fax Window and then you highlight the printer and go to options & supplies then go to drivers and from there you check what driver are you using can also select the Generic Postscript driver that should also be compatible with that printer and with your Operating System.
NOTE: Installing the Software from the HP Website might create you conflict since the drivers come already preinstalled with the OS. So we recommend doing an uninstall and then manually install them from Leopard DVD.
    Removing the .gz file:
Double-click the hard drive icon, by default labeled Macintosh HD.
    Double-click Library.
    Double-click Printers
    Double-click PPDs folder.
    Double-click Contents.
    Double-click Resources.
Scroll through the list until you find the HP Laserjet 2100 Series.gz file; single-click it and drag it to the Trash.
    Restart and empty trash
    Delete the printer
    Install HP Drivers for Leopard
Insert your Leopard installation DVD, click on the Optional Installs icon
    Then Optional Installs.mpkg
    Then Continue
    Agree to the License
Then from the Custom Install window click on the arrow next to the Printer Drivers
Then put a checkmark on the Hewlett-Packard Printer Drivers and then click on continue
Finish the installation and then restart your Mac.
    Add the printer again.
    Then try Printing.
Once again, thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Commercial Solutions Center."

  • Unable to open PDF, Undefined Error, command Get

I am on Adobe Acrobat Pro 11.0.5 and the person sending me a document or trying to read one I send in also on 11.0.5.  I am running on Windows 7, 64 bit.
Some, but not all documents that are scanned and saved as a PDF file will not open on the other person's system.  The open results in two pages with the first blank and the  second showing:
    ERROR: undefined
    OFFENDING COMMAND: get
    STACK:
    /quit
    -dictionary-
    -mark
I have serached the web and have not found any solution.  I checked the document security on one that was sent to me that fails and it shows "no secuity".  I do not recal ever having this until I went to the Acrobat 11 level.  Since I can no longer expect a PDF file to be usable by the person I send it to or for one sent to me to be readable, I am back to having to fax document or scan them as jpegs for sending.
I get the same error trying to open the document under Acrobat Pro or Reader.
Checked a set of PDF files where one opens and others have the error.  The one that opens shows as having password security while the two that fail show as having no security.

I asked the person sending the PDF files to me to verify that the failing files open and look like expected on his PC.  He says they do.
Here are the Adobe Properties on a bad and a good file:
    Bad
    Good
I am going to guess that he got the good (full) form from the insurance company and then tried to save the two signature pages from it as a smaller PDF file.  It is this smaller PDF that has the error.
