Office 2010 / Exchange 2010 - Attachments in EML-Emails are invisible

We are investigating a problem that seems to pop up with Exchange / Outlook 2010.
This is the absolutly the same problem that Clemens Wunder wrote about in his tread:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/outlook/thread/afce3bd0-f8a4-419b-986a-0560ebff5f8f
Problem:
We got several eml-files in a Management System and those have attachmentes (word, pdf whatever) included.
If i open those EML Files in Outlook 2010 (this works if the Registry is apropriate) the Email is opening but the Attachments are "invisible"...
If i now save the Mesage from within Outlook 2010 as a MSG File and open this one the attachments are back...
I searched for bout one week now for a solution but i still don't get it why this should be happening.
My Specs:
- Windows 7
- Outlook 2010
- Exchange 2010 (migrated from 2003)
Fact:
The same problem seems also to happen with Outlook 2007 and 2003 since the migration of Exchange 2003 to 2010.
Those EML Files are from within a data management system and are stored as eml since bout 4 years.
Please don't send answers like "Use Windows Mail" - this is not a solution for this matter because I can't.
Exchange / Outlook is used at every customer of our company so WM can't be the solution...
Thanks for your advices and tips
Roman

Hi Roman,
To make sure I understand things correctly…..
You have EML files generated by another program. Emails have one or more attachments.
You have copied the EML files into your Outlook 2010 profile’s mail folder.
When you open the item in the folder, you have to open or save the item. –You have HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Outlook.File.eml.14\shell\Open\command set
to use Outlook 2010 to open the file.
When you open the EML file, the message opens but the attachments are not visible.
In actuality, when you open the EML file, Outlook is saving the file to your “..\..\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook\” location.
To see what Outlook is doing I started a Process Monitor trace,
then dragged a Windows Live Mail EML message with a Word doc attached over to my Outlook 2010 Inbox.
When I open the eml item, I am prompted to Open or Save the item. I opt for Open and the message with attachment is opened with Outlook 2010.
The trace shows accessing the registry to find out what to use to open the EML file and then it shows the attached file being created in
Temporary Internet Files. The attached file is seen,
but nothing happens to it.

NAME NOT FOUND
28:14.1
OUTLOOK.EXE QueryDirectory   jahawk
C:\Users\jahawk\Documents\Help me.docx NO SUCH FILE
From the opened EML file, you click File | Save As | And then save the item as an .MSG file.
When you drag the MSG into your Outlook profile’s mail folder, the mail with attachments is visible.
Looking at the mail folder, the EML item does not have a mail icon associated to it. The item shows no Attachment icon, because it cannot be
read in yet. –You’d need to open the EML file in Outlook to view the message with attachment(s).
Looking at the mail folder, the MSG item is an Outlook mail item and the attachments are showing up.
So, let me ask the following:
How was the item created?
Does this happen with any file that is attached?
In Windows Live Mail, attachments have a lot LESS properties associated to them
Outlook 2010 actually has a PR_ATTACHMENT_HIDDEN property that can toggled to hide an attachment.
What happens from Outlook Web Access? –You will have to right-click “Save Target As” on the attached eml message, first. When you
open the saved “E-mail Message” from the save location, what results?
Is your anti-virus possibly scanning the file? –“..\...\Temporary Internet Files\Outlook.content….”
Anyways, to be honest, I’d have to have a copy of the EML file to be able to (hopefully) explain what is happening.
If I had the file, I would use MFCMapi or OutlookSpy to dump the EML message’s properties after I’ve added it to my mailbox. I’d
then open it and save it as an MSG file type. From there, I’d save the MSG file’s properties off and then compare the 2 sets of properties. And, the item has an Attachment Table that will contain the attached files. Each attachment will have its
own set of properties.
From an Outlook created message with attachment, you could compare the attachment’s properties to the props on the affected message.
From a Windows Live Mail message with attachment, you could compare the attachment’s properties to the props on the affected message.
For the kind of troubleshooting we'd need to do, I would suggest calling and opening a support incident with us. That would allow us to work with you
at a much deeper level. For a case like this, a debug trace of opening the message from in Outlook 2010 would likely be necessary.
Sorry I didn’t have better information for you.

My macbook air cannot sync with my office microsoft exchange 2010 mail server.
It used to work perfectly, and then I lost connection and was never able to establish one. I re-istalled my e-mail account several times, no success.

I am sure all of you got your email issues sorted out by now but i was having trouble settings up exchange email on my Iphone 5S, and the problem i found was to go to settings, icloud, then log into icloud with your apple id first (before setting up the exchange email).  Once i logged into my icloud account on my Phone 5S, the exchange server email starting working and synching right away.
to confirm this worked, i even deleted my email account and deleted my Icloud accounts both from my iphone was able to simulated the same exact problem (exchange server would not sync with my Iphone 5S) until i logged back into my Icloud account on my 5S.
Again once i logged into Icloud, the exchange server issues went completely away.
Just wanted to post this so anyone else having the issue could see.

  • Exchange 2013 - Attachments in *.EML files missing in non-cached mode

    Hello
Our client recently upgraded from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013. Since the migration they have had issues with an archiving system they use. Bascially the archiving system creates .eml files of journaled emails.
The issue our client has is when Outlook is running in non-cached exchange mode any attachments within these .eml files are missing when the eml file is opened. If they change to cached mode the attachments show up fine.
It's almost identical to the following issue I found while browsing the net:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/b9a390a9-e014-4098-ad6e-dd377a53422a/office-2010-exchange-2010-attachments-in-emlemails-are-invisible?forum=outlook
Aside from the Exchange version this is exactly what is happening for our client. Is anyone aware of whether the same issue fixed in Rollup update 5 for Exch 2010 SP1 is still present in Exchange 2013?
Our client has already said they don't want everyone using cached exchange so I can't tell them that. Is there a way to manually fix the issue or are we going to have to move back to Exchange 2010 while a patch is sent out? Does anyone know exactly what
    the issue is?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I know there was this issue with Exchange 2010, but haven't noticed the same issue in Exchange 2013. The suggestion would be to keep Exchange fully updated - It seems you have done so.
I'm not sure when SP1 will be released, you may post this question to Exchange forum since it may be more related:

  • Out Of Office error ++ Exchange 2010 SP3 just installed sbs2011

    Hello
Just recent tried to install sp1 for Exchange 2010, this failed, and ended up in installing SP3, and this went ok.
Ok, by meaning, the installation itself went OK, but the former SP1 isntallation broke a couple of things, and some was adopted to the SP3 isntalaltion.
The main issue now, is that OOF does not work.

  • Outlook 2010 Exchange 2010 Read Receipt Request for all emails cannot be switched OFF.

I have a strange situation with an Outlook 2010 client using Exchange 2010. The user has Outlook configured so that Under Options/Mail/Tracking - that "Read receipt confirming the recipient has viewed the message" is turned off. Yet everytime she
sends a message, the option to request pops up on the recipient's outlook.
I have tried to toggle the option on and off to no avail. I can switch the Delivery Receipt request on and off and it is no issue.
Can anyone tell me what attribute in ADSIEdit or Exchange is that seems to be stuck ON?

    Hi,
I believe you would like to block this only for the user and not for your ORG... ??
Although, you can block this for your entire ORG.
what happens is that the Read receipt contains a "Disposition-Notification-To"
If we get rid of this header we can restrict the receiver to get that prompt.
we can create a Transport rule either for the entire org or for that specific user by making an adjustment in the "exception tab"
for more info refer this blog.

  • Dpm 2010 exchange 2010 backups are failing

Hi, I'm getting an error which does not seem to match in the DPM 2010 ID codes. Randomly, I have backups of an exchange 2010 DAG that are failing. The backup will run for a short time (5mints..up to 10minuts) and then will fail with the following error:
    Type: Recovery point
    Status: Failed
Description: Backup failed as another copy of 'user' database is currently being backed up. (ID 32628 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990D51)
     More information
    End time: 4/25/2011 10:37:27 PM
    Start time: 4/25/2011 10:26:55 PM
    Time elapsed: 00:10:31
    Data transferred: 0 MB
    Cluster node -
    Recovery Point Type Incremental Sync
    Source details: 06001
    Protection group: EXCH2010 - 06001
I've tried restarting the DPM server to troubleshoot. I say this happens randomly because I've had some backups successfully complete against the same exchange server. The only other item that seems odd is when creating protection groups against the DAG,
the intial lookup seems to take forever. Not sure what to try next.

    Hello,
As DPM relies on the exchange writer to take the snapshot for the backup, if the backupinprogress flag is set to true and it does not seem get out of this state even when there is no actual backup in place, then at this point DPM is the victim.
As far as I am aware the only way is to clear that flag is to:
    a.) Reboot the exchange server
    or
    b.) Restart the information store
    In some cases even:
1.) Either Activate all other databases on another Node except for the Problem Database, and Dismount the Problem database temporarily
    Or:
1.)Dismount all Databases on this Node including the problem database
2.)Restart the Exchange Information Store Service.
    3.)Mount any dismounted databases
You may want to redirect this question below to the exchange 2010 forum of:
"if the backupinprogress is set to true when it should be set to false as there really is no backup being taken, then how can I reset it without having to perform:
    a.) reboot of exchange
b.) restart of the information store"

  • Outlook 2010 + Exchange 2010 keeps asking for credentials - Please Help!

    Hello All,
Recently after a Windows Update + restart of my Exchange Server I'm having an issue with Outlook 2010 where it continually asks for credentials. Every 5 minutes or so the credentials popup appears and either typing your password or clicking cancel will make
Outlook work as expected again until the next popup, frequency of popups is about 2-5 minutes give or take. I am using Exchange 2010 on Server 2008 R2 and aside from the popup everything is working as expected. This seems to be effecting almost all users.
Some things I've tried already include:
    - Removing any saved credentials on computer
    - Removing and recreating Outlook Mail Profiles
    - Running "Set-AutodiscoverVirtualDirectory -Identity 'autodiscover (default Web site)' -WindowsAuthentication $true -BasicAuthentication $false" in shell to disable basic authentication for autodiscover
    - Running "get-outlookanyhwere | set-outlookanywhere -ClientAuthenticationMethod NTLM -IISAuthenticationMethods NTLM" in shell to ensure that outlook anywhere and IIS are using NTLM authentication
    - Ensuring that the OAB folder permissions are set to allow Authenticated Users to Read/Execute
Anyways, if anybody has additional suggestions for me I'd very much appreciate them. Many users are using the Web App for the time being (with no issues) since the credentials popup is too annoying for them.

So I made sure that all of my authentication methods match the settings you linked me and then recycled the app pool you mentioned but am still having the issue.
One thing I noticed is that if a user experiencing the problem types their password into the credentials popup it will keep popping up continuously but if they hit cancel it says "Needs Password" where it would normally say "Connected to Microsoft Exchange"
and if they simply click once where it says "Needs Password" then all of a sudden it switches to "Connected to Microsoft Exchange" again and they no longer see the popup until Outlook is restarted.
Just to verify I have the proper settings now this is what shell returns:
    [PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-WebServicesVirtualDirectory | fl *auth*
    CertificateAuthentication     :
    InternalAuthenticationMethods : {Ntlm, WindowsIntegrated, WSSecurity}
    ExternalAuthenticationMethods : {Ntlm, WindowsIntegrated, WSSecurity}
    LiveIdSpNegoAuthentication    : False
    WSSecurityAuthentication      : True
    LiveIdBasicAuthentication     : False
    BasicAuthentication           : False
    DigestAuthentication          : False
    WindowsAuthentication         : True
    [PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-AutodiscoverVirtualDirectory | fl *auth*
    InternalAuthenticationMethods : {Basic, Ntlm, WindowsIntegrated, WSSecurity}
    ExternalAuthenticationMethods : {Basic, Ntlm, WindowsIntegrated, WSSecurity}
    LiveIdSpNegoAuthentication    : False
    WSSecurityAuthentication      : True
    LiveIdBasicAuthentication     : False
    BasicAuthentication           : True
    DigestAuthentication          : False
    WindowsAuthentication         : True
Do you have any additional suggestions that I can try? From what I can tell my authentication methods all match the default settings now.
Edit: As soon as I changed EWA to just Basic Authentication as it says in the linked default settings I would get an error when trying to browse to the EWA that said "Outlook failed to initialize" and re-adding the Windows Authentication, then running iisreset
fixed the issue. Therefore EWA is the only service with non-default authentication methods now.

  • When I receive email from friends it sometimes comes in with very small print, also attachments also attachments from those emails are in tiny print. Others are fine. Can some one help, please??

can some one please help me change the font size for incoming emails? some emails are fine others are very small and I cannot change them to read or print?

    Welcome Margaret!
How are you reading e-mail? in a browser (like Safari) or with a separate mail program like Apple Mail or MS Entourage?
Entourage and Mail have  'larger/smaller" text commands. In either, typing command + or command - will zoom or shrink the text.
The same commands work in the Safari browser.
Much of this comes from people with small-screen devices sending to people with really large screens. I have a friend who asks all his contacts to use a larger font than default when they e-mail him. He has a really cantankerous Windows box that will not let him increase font size in received messages.
If you have a 27-inch iMac the huge amount of screen real estate may make a lot of text hard to read. That's what I have, and I set the desktop resolution to a smaller number to get larger text. My 27-incher defaults to 2560x1440 and everything is small to my old eyes. I changed it to 1920x1080 and lost none of the sharpness but gained a lot in font size.
If you want to try this, go to System Preferences > Displays and make sure the "Displays", not "Color" tab is active. Click the round button next to "Scaled" and you'll be offered a selection of desktop resolutions.
Please let me know if I confused the issue!

  • Outlook 2010 / Exchange 2010 prevent double room booking

    Hi,
I have a problem with double-booking of rooms in my company. I've read pretty much everything I could find on this subject and I'm still not satisfied. I setup a room in Exchange with these settings:
    - Resource Booking Attendant: disabled
    - Allow conflicting meetings: disabled
    - Delegate of the mailbox: UserDelegate
    - Users who are allowed to submit in-policy requests that will be automatically approved: Selected recipients (none)
    - Users who are subject to approval by delegate (within in-policy): all users
    - Users who are allowed to submit out-of-policy requests: selected recipients (none).
I believe this is supposed to work like this: everyone can request a meeting and every meeting request has to be accepted by a delegate (UserDelegate in this case). There are no conflicts allowed.
However, it doesn't work that way. Let me give you an example of how it does work.
User1 requests a meeting in a MeetingRoom1. UserDelegate accepts the meeting, and everyone can see in MeetingRoom's calendar that the room is booked (permission set to default=reviewer). Then User2 requests a conflicting meeting at the same time and the
same room. It is not automatically rejected and can still ask for approval. UserDelegate still receives a request and CAN agree to it - even if there is conflict. Sure, there is a notification of a conflict, but room can be double booked anyway.
Let's say UserDelegate sees the notification of a conflict and rejects the meeting. User2 get an email that says his meeting was rejected, but in his calendar the meeting is still on. It doesn't disappear. It leads to conflicts, when 2 users show up at the
MeetingRoom1 and they both claim they booked the room - which is true, even though one of them was rejected. He didn't realize, since the meeting was still active in his calendar...
If I enable Resource Booking Attendant the User2 request would be denied automatically and the notification would be sent, but the meeting remains in the calendar. Besides, I don't want it to be enable, since it automatically agrees to all meetings if there
is time and space for it. I have a UserDelegate who's supposed to decide who gets the room.
I tried to EnableDirectBooking=1 in registry in Outlook, but it doesn't work. Users still can requests the meeting.
So, in short: I don't want users to be able to book an already booked room. Can you help me with that? I can provide screenshots and EMS if you need me to.

    Hello,
Declined meeting will stay in the organizer's calendar. This behavior is by design. It is convenient for the meeting organizer to check the meeting information, change the location to another room and send updates for other attendees. If the organizer want
to remove this meeting, he needs to decline the meeting and send decline updates to other attendees.

  • Retention Policy Tag on Outlook 2010/Exchange 2010 SP3

While I still wanted to have the Retention Policies and Tags applied to mailboxes, would I just be able to "HIDE" or "SUPPRESS" the Tip that the Outlook 2010 client shows on the read-pane like...
Retention Policy: xx Days Retention Inbox (xx days) Expires x/x/xxxx  ??
    Please suggest
Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. Regards, Siva

    Hi,
When a retention policy is applied to an item in user's mailbox, the retention policy for a message appears in the header in the Reading Pane under the recipient names and includes the expiration date. If no retention policy is applied, no information appears
    under the message recipient names.
Based on my knowledge, I'm afraid there is no way to hide it in the Reading Pane.

  • Outlook 2010 - Exchange 2010 AutoConfig on New Profiles

    Hi All,
Hoping someone could shed some light on an issue not come across before?
    Action:
Start, Control Panel, Mail, Show Profiles, Add, type in profile name 'test' press ok.
At this point I would expect the Wizard to pop up confirming the AutoConfig details from AD against exchange details.
IE Server Username, Email address etc.
This should then give me the option to manually configure the settings, so if I wanted to I could add a different Email account, not the one associated to my AD credentials.
The problem I have is that no Wizard pops up, all that happens is the box disappears and profile auto configures itself with details from Exchange.
I am unable to remove this email account error message " The primary account cannot be removed unless it is the only account in the profile. You Must remove all other Exchange accounts
    before removing the primary account."
There is no other profile in here, it is almost like Outlook is being forced to state it cannot delete this profile.
Please can someone explain what is causing this and where Outlook is getting the settings to Auto configure the profile.
It does not matter how many profiles I create they all do the same, no Wizard and automatically populate the same details from Exchange.
This occurring for some profiles but not all.

It is fairly common that in managed environments administrators have set Group Policies to force the AutoConfiguration of Outlook without any user input. Contact the administrator(s) responsible for the Group Policies or client deployment for you company
to find out if anything like that has been configured.

  • Outlook 2010, Exchange 2010 - Searching Problems

Anyone out there able to help with some searching problems some of our users have been seeing?
Searching in OWA works fine but some people have problems when searching for older emails in Outlook. We've rebuilt Outlook profiles, rebuilt the windows index's (which seems to work but only temporarily). If there's a way to schedule the Windows index to
rebuild every night or once  week, I'd be very happy to test that out but haven't been able to figure out how to do that.
    Anyone have any other ideas?

    Hi,
It seems something keeps corrupting the index... Run Anti-virus program and Malicious Software Removal Tool to scan your system, check if there's any virus or malware that may cause the index issue.
If this issue persists, please also go to File tab ->
Options -> Search -> Indexing Options
-> Advanced -> Click Troubleshoot search and indexing, to do some troubleshooting steps to find the possible cause.
    I hope this helps.

  • My folder view and all Emails are invisible on backup PC

I've been using Thunderbird for several years, and about a year and a half ago moved my TB *.default folder to a folder within Dropbox so that my email would sync no matter whether I was using my "daily driver" iMac, or backup PC running XP. Of course I appropriately edited the path to the new *.default folder" in the profile.ini file for each machine. It worked really slick, as it should.
Although the PC gets booted up about biweekly on average, I haven't had to use Thunderbird on it since I confirmed that it worked properly per above - until now. I'm having a hardware issue with my iMac so I launched Thunderbird on the PC, and the folder pane, though it's there, is now totally blank. The message pane shows no messages, and when I click on "Read Messages" nothing happens - the view doesn't change. Likewise, selecting "Message Pane - or keying F8 - does nothing. There is no error pop-up on launch. The folder pane is checked in the pull-down menu, and I've exhausted all possible view options and still can't any folders (XP is totally up-to-date, end of support notwithstanding, and I keep the PC antivirus up-to-date and run it regularly. Since the PC is barely used , I very rarely find any problems with it.)
When I open the Error Console I see errors in the following lines: 784, 287, 131, 250, 2432, 287, and 300. I tried to copy and paste them here but it's not working (is there a way to save the error report to a text file?)
It sure would be nice to resolve this so that I can use Thunderbird on my PC until I can get my iMac fixed. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

    Matt,
Thanks very much for the prompt response. I added a ".old" extension to the folderTree.json filename - figured it was safer than deleting it altogether - launched TB and it behaved the same as before (no joy). After quitting Thunderbird I see a new folderTree.json file had been created (as I suspected it would be). I also see the error console loads up with more errors as TB is running. Another thing I had neglected to mention is that every time I launch TB it goes through the add-on compatibility check, as if a new version is being launched for the 1st time - and I've launched it at least 4-5 times today.

  • How can I display my MS Outlook/Exchange 2010 Calendar events on my web application's calendar?

I'm building a web (client) application (built in html/JavaScript/jQuery) that has a built-in calendar. I would like to pull in my Outlook/Exchange Calendar events
and display them in my web application's calendar. What is the best way to do that from a JavaScript/jQuery environment? I've been searching all over for plugins or examples of how to talk to Exchange/Outlook and retrieve Calendar events but I haven't found
a solution yet. We are currently using MS Office/Outlook/Exchange 2010. I don't need to modify the calendar events, just read them. (Note that I can't use an OWA Web Parts link
to display the calendar in an iframe; I need to have access to the actual event data so I can include other UI elements that I need for my application.) Thanks
    in advance for the help!

    Hi,
There's an old Java API for EWS, and you can access EWS with direct soap request to retrieve the data you want.

  • Exchange 2010\Outlook Mail issues

    Hi,
I am having some issues with mail disappearing and outlook not updating. The issues are:
When sending an email from Outlook it appears in the sent items for 30 seconds in Outlook and then disappears. It never shows up in OWA The email does send though. If an email is sent via OWA the email appears and stays in both OWA and Outlook. This is
    happening in Outlook 2010\Exchange 2010
Updating issues on random folders in Outlook. This is happening on both Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2010 different users with the same Exchange 2010 back end.
Both users have cached email forced. I have tried rebuilding the mailbox locally.
    Cheers,
    Zac Avramides

    Hi,
Thanks for your detailed information about the symptom.
It seems the issue is more related to the Outlook client since OWA works fine. I suggest we can follow the checkpoints below:
    1. Rebuild Outlook profile.
    2. Disable any third-party firewall or AV programs.
    3. Run Windows in Clean Boot.
    4. Run Outlook in safe mode by “Outlook /safe”.
    What’s the result now?
    Thanks,
