Opinion on DL burners?

Hi everyone,
Does anyone have an opinion as to the best dual layer dvd burner? I have a lacie (of recent vintage, with lightscribe)... and I'm not getting exactly the results I want...(some of the structure of the dvd isn't quite right. While I can access individual sequences fine, the end jumps are not working right). I've tried different media, with varying degress of success. And I'm burning from Toast 7. Does anyone think a different burner might bring better results? Any ideas? THANKS

Becuase the player is just burning a file. It doesn't have the ablity to alter that file. Its like burning a CD but your songs all come out sounding diferently. Now if you are getting bad glitches, and freezing and so forth then that could be attributed to the burner.
But if you are having issues where the DVD just isn't performing as it should then I would attribute that to player compatibilty issues.
I've recently learned all about this on a few of my last projects. Some players play by the rules and others just don't.

Howdy! Welcome to the Apple Discussion Boards!
I have a good opinion of LaCie burners. I have had one for over two years now with nary a problem. I used it with a PB G4 12 inch model. It comes bundled with Toast Titanium, which is really good burning software, IMO.
As far as system specs, check out LaCie's website, but I think anything above 10.2 would be supported.

  • Yosemite - Opinion - Difficulties with installation

The following is my personal opinion after having installed OS X 10.10 aka. Yosemite. I hope this is the right community to post this. I also had a little trouble with the installation. Perchance this'll help other people deal with similar dificulties.
Installation froze at the last stage. It said "about one minute" for more than half an hour. I eventually powered the Mac down, and after reboot installation would start from the beginning. Luckily, it didn't freeze again. I added some information from the log files at the end of this post, in case you're interested.
Folder icons are much brighter. On a white background (the default) they look like translucent and lack a sharp silhouette. The system font is no longer Lucida Grande but Helvetica Neue. This looks nice in the dock, but Lucida Grande definately looked better in the menu bar. The trashcan no longer looks like a basket but like a cheap rubber cup. It is so white, it sticks out quite ugly from the Dock. The hard drive icon looks like rubber too and lacks of a shadow beneath it, which makes it much less readable over certain desktop backgrounds. Mounted disk images, on the other hand, look a lot like SSDs, which is okay but pointless.
They removed the full-screen icon from window titles and redefined the green button to the left as the new fullscreen button. Windows that don't support fullscreen such as Finder windows will still maximize when the green button is clicked. To maximize a window that supports fullscreen, you can press and hold alt while clicking the green button. This may be something that needs some getting used to, but I like the new behaviour so far.
They removed the redundant Dock submenu from the Apple menu. There is still the menu over the Dock's separator line (the one that separates running applications from files and the trashcan), and of course there's the system settings panel. I like this change, because the Apple menu has looked cluttered up ever since OS 9.
Mavericks had a bug that you could open the collapsed side bar when you were trying to resize the window width by grabbing the window's left border. They seems to have fixed this. Or maybe I just forgot how to reproduce it.
    (0) Spotlight now searches both your hard drives and the Internet. I find the latter both confusing and distracting, but luckily you can turn off this behaviour in the System settings.
    (0) Spotlight now opens a window as soon as you click its magnifier icon. The window shows previews of the matches, which may turn out a nice feature. The window is non-draggable and has a fixed size, which is unfortunate. Moreover, it would be closed as soon as you click somewhere else. That's not as bad as it sounds, because you can see the previous results when you click the magnifier again, but still it feels pretty arbitrary.
Before Mavericks came, you could create an alias of a window's folder by pressing and holding command and option and dragging the icon that's shown in the window title bar. Since Mavericks, this no longer works, and Yosemite does not fix this. Luckily, command-clicking the window title to see the file path still works, as well as dragging the icon to move the folder. (I use the latter a lot to copy the path of a Finder window to an open Terminal.)
There is now a calculator in the notification centre. Yet another one? The system now comes with three calculators: one in the notification centre, one in the Dashboard, one in the Applications folder. The latter is the only one that can do more than just the basic arithmetic operations. As a programmer, I use both the scientific and the programmer's view quite a lot. The version that came with Mavericks definately looked better though, but all the functions seem to be still there, so I don't really care.
File tags (colours) are still as they were introduced in Mavericks. To switch tags, you still have to remove the tag, then go into the menu again to set the new tag. Tag colours are still fairly small dots, which makes them hard to spot in certain views.
Finder windows still sometimes forget the settings I do to them, and the option to disable both the toolbar and the sidebar still can't be made the default and has to be reassigned to folders again and again if you prefer this setting. This behaviour was introduced quite some time ago, I think it must have been 10.8. I hoped Yosemite would perhaps finally fix this, but I was mistaken.
Scrollbars still haven't got their arrows back. The arrows were removed with 10.8, I think, and I still badly miss them from time to time. Try scrolling in a large document and you'll know what I mean!
Yosemite still respects my ApplePersistence=NO setting. This is a flag that may be set to NO using the Terminal and the command "defaults" as root, which will turn off the strange and pointless ApplePersistent features they introduced with Mavericks. After setting it to NO, applications will never be automatically reopened at launch and Open/Save/SaveAs work again as they should. I'm very glad ApplePersistence=NO still works with Yosemite!
The text of window titles of some older applications as Microsoft Word 2008 or Textwrangler 4.5.3 are now drawn in a lighter grey than Finder windows and system applications, which makes these windows look as if they were inactive.
    Appended: Some errors during installation.
Nothing got logged in system.log during the actual installation. That's probably normal, because system boots from a disk image when installing. So, no error messages here. The following is an extract from system.log when booting after I had done a forced shutdown as the installation progress got stuck:

Think you wanted your reply to be to pjonesCET1
But, I will give an opinion on your post --
You want to use Microsoft Office because of the robust nature of its elements.    Apples Iwork and prior to that Apple works - is at the level of Microsoft works - an stripped down piece of software that meets the need of many people.    Apple and Microsoft agreed to have a version of Microsoft office that could run on Apple devices.
The of problems between versions of Maverick and Yosemite may have to to with apple releasing Yosemite before it was fully tested with Microsoft office - or the bug has been there awhile and Yosemite just brought it to the surface.
In general - when new level of software comes out - its not a complete re-write.   Commented out code that was replaced with new code is removed, along with indicators for new code and history of what the problem is are removed - giving clean code.   If the language has new structure, the code may be passed through a converted that, depending on detail reformats code into new statement structure.
Sometimes bugs are added because a certified programmer just can't read existing code even their own - or just ignore standards and use a new instruction that is incompatible with existing code.
Microsoft does issue patches for existing software - so they may do that for your problem - but some problems can take a while to figure out just where they went wrong.

  • *My* frank opinion of the N900

    *My* opinion of the N900
I know there are a few threads about that address this but I felt that it wouldn't be so bad to restart the conversation once in a while.
I got my N900 a week and a half ago and am right in the middle of deciding between these 3 choices:
    - keep using the N900
    - go back to my N97 and keep the N900 in the hope that within a few weeks/months Maemo and apps will vindicate us
    - go back to the N97 and send the N900 back and wait for months until Maemo gets updated or even wait for the next Maemo device.
Here is in summary my opinion of the N900: it's a great device/computer but it's a lousy phone. I am kind of critical of the phone below even though I really like it and really want to use it more. So please read with that in mind.
What makes me optimistic is that all the problems I will be mentioning can and most will be fixed by software updates. We are not talking about dismal memory or scratched lenses like the N97 or wobbly sliders like the N95.
So please be kind, here goes my N900 impressions/opinions:
    Hardware
    ++++
    - Solid build. It's huge and heavy but, surprisingly, I don't mind too much. It strikingly contrasts with N97. this is a taste thing.
    - Keyboard is great. Much better feel than N97.
    - Humongous amount of RAM (for now. Once again, aslight dig at N97)
    - Device does not fit in my Columbia khakis' phone pocket.
    - I really like the tilt flip of N97 and as such currently dislike the flat slide for N900. I'm sure this is an acquired taste.
    - I prefer the keyboard layout of N97 though the physical keyboard on N900 is better.
    - Kickstand is flimsy
    - I still think MicroSD slot should be accessible without removing battery cover. Yes, it still allows for hotswapping so that's still good.
    Maemo
    ++++
    - Multitasking is great.
    - Task List shortcut *and* effects are nice.
    - Effects in general are great.
    - I liked the desktops and widgets.
    - I *do* want my portrait mode for everything. This is a huge downer. Everything is in ladscape except the phone dialer.
    - Maemo should implement the "hold-the-key-to-get-the-alternate-character" keyboard scheme that is fairly standard on other Nokia phones.
    - On the virtual keyboard, why would the '.' not be on the same slate as the alpha? Makes no sense to have to switch to the other slate just to punctuate.
    Communications
    ++++
    - I did not think Skype integration would be that important but I love it. SIP and other networks from the dialer as well.
    - I goes and gets your contacts' profile info when you are logged in to a network (Skype, Google Talk, etc) Pretty handy.
    - eMail app does HTML. And pretty well too.
    - Need a way to easily get to the phone app from anywhere.
    - No support for network codes *#num# etc...
    - No Speed dialing
    - No sound profiles! My Nokia 6310 and SE T39 from 2001 did this! **bleep**?
    - No Skype video calling (Fring does it!)
    - eMail app should allow me to view emails in fullscreen mode.
    - The whole message notification system is not very well thought out. If I leave for some time and just unlock the phone, there is not obvious way to tell that I got any new messages. It's only when I do a task list flick that I see that a conversation has resumed. Yes, the notification light flashes but nothing obvious is on the display.
    - There is no obvious notification that I have missed calls. Same as message notification above.
    - It seems to me that the internet connection is never disconnected. Even when all I have that needs the connection is the email app to poll every 30 minutes, the internet (whether 3G or Wifi) icon never goes away. This could be a huge battery saver if optimized.
    - On the flip side, it also appears that if I just turn on the phone, it does not automatically initiate internet connections so then my email does not get refreshed unlees I remember to do it first by hand. Pretty inconvenient if you ask me.
    Music Player
    ++++
    - It's ok. Not a big critic so I am neither excited not negative about it.
    - A FM receiver on the device but no FM software? **bleep**?
    - Creating playlists is not clear. I still am sot sure how it's done after 10 days.
    Video Player
    ++++
    - Broad format support
    - No support for changing setting when watching a movie. I have some 16:9 movies that it shows at 4:3 and vice versa with no way to change. This makes it useless.
    Web Browsing
    ++++
    - Browser is very good.
    - Love the (albeit limited) gesture shortcuts. Slide from left to hover (ok this one isn't that cool or clear,) slide from right for history, spiral on the screen to zoom in or out.
    Maps and GPS
    ++++
    - GPS lock is much faster than other phones I've used. This is great in conjunction with Camera for geotagging purposes.
    - I don't know what the Maps application is doing on there. It can't do anything. Search finds almost nothing, directions are barely average and no turn-by-turn. Please at least steal or beg Google to make Google Maps for Maemo.
    Camera
    ++++
    - Pretty decent. Better than N97 in my opinion.
    - Geotagging is much faster than N97 even though it seems to tag too early so sometimes it's off because it uses the cellular info before a full GPS lock.
    - Love the 16:9 mode. I realize one can do it post in Gimp but it's still cool.
    - No Xenon flash means photos not as good as N82 in the dark.
    - Once again, same problem as with N82, when taking a portrait photo, Nokia decided to put lanyard slot on "top" of the device which makes the lanyard sometime get in the way of the shot.
    - Photo browser could be so much more.
    Applications
    ++++
    - Fennec, anyone? http://firefox.com/m
    - Obviously, I wish the Maemo catalog of apps were as big as that of Symbian apps but we'll get there, right?
    Office/Organizer
    ++++
    - PDF viewer included.
    - Pretty basic so close to useless.
    - No syncML support so can't sync with GooSync or NuevaSync.
    - I think a device of this caliber/price/power should just have office applications built-in. I don't care if it's DataViz or OpenOffice or AbiWord/Gnumeric but it's bunk that we only get a trial of Documents-to-Go. Anyone know if OpenOffice or AbiWord is coming out for Maemo soon?
    Other
    ++++
    - I am on T-Mobile so 1700 3G rocks.
    - I love doing apt-get in the command line. I am a geek!
    - This has been talked about everywhere and opinions/mileage vary but for me battery life has been dismal. As a test, I charged it up before going to bed: 9pm and by 7am it said it was half empty. All I had running was my mail checking every 30min and all my "identities" were inactive. No Wifi usage just 3G. It dies by 11am. This was after a week of cycling so that battery had a chance to be normalized.
    - Wifi also killed the battery even if it was not connected all the time. This is a known bug so it should be fixed soon.
    - For a > USD500 device, it's stupid that I don't get a full User Guide in the box.
    - Why do they insist on Ovi store. It's **bleep** for Symbian phones, it'll be **bleep** for Maemo.
As I said, some of these are already on the Maemo bugs database, some are widely known issues and some are just personal preferences that may or may never be remedied.
I hope it helps people who are thinking about getting the device and I am hoping that the feedback I get here will help me decide whether to return mine or not.

So it appears that almost none of the firmware fixable items were addressed in Maemo 5/PR1.1. Out of the 23 issues I had that could be fixed via firmware (10 were either hardware or other issues that were not), only the #6 got a partial (and unofficial?) change: you can now browse the web in portrait mode by keying in ctrl+alt+o on the keyboard. Still waiting for another update I guess. I really do miss the phone, it just did not make sense to own and tie up that much money in a device I will not use as my primary phone. although the < USD450 price at Dell is very very tempting ;-)
    Still waiting, Nokia.
For reference, below are my issues from original post.

17- It seems to me that the internet connection is never disconnected. Even when all I have that needs the connection is the email app to poll every 30 minutes, the internet (whether 3G or Wifi) icon never goes away. This could be a huge battery saver if optimized.
18- On the flip side, it also appears that if I just turn on the phone, it does not automatically initiate internet connections so then my email does not get refreshed unlees I remember to do it first by hand. Pretty inconvenient if you ask me.
    Music Player
19- A FM receiver on the device but no FM software? **bleep**?
20- Creating playlists is not clear. I still am sot sure how it's done after 10 days.
    Video Player
21- No support for changing setting when watching a movie. I have some 16:9 movies that it shows at 4:3 and vice versa with no way to change. This makes it useless.
    Maps and GPS
22- I don't know what the Maps application is doing on there. It can't do anything. Search finds almost nothing, directions are barely average and no turn-by-turn. Please at least steal or beg Google to make Google Maps for Maemo.
    Camera
23- No Xenon flash means photos not as good as N82 in the dark.
24- Once again, same problem as with N82, when taking a portrait photo, Nokia decided to put lanyard slot on "top" of the device which makes the lanyard sometime get in the way of the shot.
25- Photo browser could be so much more.
    Applications
26- Obviously, I wish the Maemo catalog of apps were as big as that of Symbian apps but we'll get there, right?
    Office/Organizer
27- Pretty basic so close to useless.
28- No syncML support so can't sync with GooSync or NuevaSync.
29- I think a device of this caliber/price/power should just have office applications built-in. I don't care if it's DataViz or OpenOffice or AbiWord/Gnumeric but it's bunk that we only get a trial of Documents-to-Go. Anyone know if OpenOffice or AbiWord is coming out for Maemo soon?
    Other
30- This has been talked about everywhere and opinions/mileage vary but for me battery life has been dismal.
31- Wifi also killed the battery even if it was not connected all the time. This is a known bug so it should be fixed soon.
    32- For a > USD500 device, it's stupid that I don't get a full User Guide in the box.
33- Why do they insist on Ovi store. It's **bleep** for Symbian phones, it'll be **bleep** for Maemo.

  • Any help or opinion/advice would be so appreciated...

    - Original iPhone worked flawlessly for 2 years. In June of this year, began to experience locked screen issues, so went to AT&T store hoping to get a replacement phone. Was told I could not, I had no choice but to 'upgrade', which I did not want to do, as it would recommit me to an additional 2 year contract. But having no choice, I agreed.
    - The new phone (3G), gave me issues within the first week. I went back to AT&T (as I was assured when I purchased that I had 30 days to return/replace if needed), only to be told they were so sorry I was misinformed by the sales girl (and that she had done this several times), and they could not help me unless I returned the phone, and purchased again, this time for $50 more, because the sales girl who sold it to me had charged me incorrectly the first time. After an hour of back and forth, and my refusing to pay more, they recommended I go to the Apple store, and try to exchange it there.
    - I decided to call Apple support, and explained the situation. The very nice person I spoke to, directed me to the Apple store, telling me he would take care of it, all I had to do was walk in, give my name, and would be given a new phone. So, I went.
    - The Apple store, proceeded to give me a 'new' phone, but when I noticed that it came in a white box, I asked the question of whether it was a new phone, or a refurbished. I was given, what sounded like a prepared speech, of how it was against the law for them to sell refurbished items without disclosing them as such, and that the phone I was receiving was NOT refurbished, and only in the white box, 'to save costs on the fancy Apple boxes'. Naive me, asked them if they promised. They said, they promised.
    - Within 2 weeks or so, my 'new' (found out by reading these threads it in fact, was not new, the serial number begins with 5), began to act up. Frustrated, I called the Apple support person back. As nice as he was the first time, he patiently tried to help me sort the issues, and instructed me to try restore/reset/etc. In doing so, my phone locked on me. Frustration level elevated now, I decided, enough of this, I am going to just spend the extra money required and buy a brand new phone, as to eliminate this madness and have peace of mind that my additional 2 year commitment would be with a working phone. I left that one plugged in to my Macbook, locked, and headed to the Apple store (45 minutes away, which is why I didn't buy it there in the first place, gas prices are so high).
    - Purchased new phone, installed the 3.1 update, and... here we go again. Having similar problems to all those described in the monster threads.
I have been working with the nice Apple support guy for a few days, and he has been very helpful, but despite doing all as instructed, my phone is still acting up. I have 1 day left on my 30 day since purchase and am so torn on what to do. Do I ...
    - go back to the Apple store, get a 'new' (refurbished even though they promise they are not) phone, and risk not having peace of mind for the next 2 years?
    Or
    - Buy a new phone AGAIN, this time, never installing any update until it's well documented that it won't affect my phone.
    OR.... ?
My phone is my main device for all I do. I need it working. Am so extremely frustrated right now. Not only have I had to spend money I simply do not have, my 2 year commitment keeps getting restarted every time I exchange/get new. Not to mention, I am charged the activation fee each time as well. *****.
Am new to this support forum, so please bear with me if I've done anything out of order by posting here. And, just so all of you who read this know, I linked the nice Apple guy to the monster threads here, and he did read through them (skimming I assume), so, Apple, at least to my knowledge, is aware of what we are going through.
Thanks so much for letting me off-load. Any help or opinion/advice would be so appreciated.

Thanks so much for your help Allan. If you don't mind, I'd like to respond/clarify a few things...

Apple and AT&T sell the iPhone at the same price. AT&T's subsidized price for the iPhone is the same at an Apple store, an AT&T store, a Best Buy, or Walmart.
I was charged a different price by AT&T (sales girl error), thus why they would not give me a new phone unless I paid the additional fee). I didn't want to pay, as I didn't see why her error should be my responsibility. I had no idea she had charged me wrong.
There is not an activation fee when activating an iPhone exchanged under warranty.
I was charged, all 3 times.
Per the written warranty, an exchange under warranty will be a new or refurbished iPhone with no way to tell the difference between the two. The serial number beginning with 5 does not mean refurbished. An exchange under warranty is provided in a white unsealed box, which is called a service unit and can be new or refurbished.
I guess what bothers me is that they lied to me when I asked.
Having a new iPhone doesn't ensure it will last 2 years with no problems, and having an exchange under warranty which can be new or refurbished doesn't ensure this either and doesn't mean it won't. The iPhone includes a standard one year warranty, which can be extended to 2 years with AppleCare.
Peace of mind is what I was/am looking for, and my experience with Apple up until this incident, peace of mind is exactly what I felt when buying Apple products. It's hard to swallow being locked into another 2 year commitment, not to mention monthly fee being higher now as well, all with a unreliable phone.
A refurbished iPhone goes through more inspection and testing than a new iPhone does at the factory with no way to tell the difference between the two.
I guess it's a matter of principle to me. I don't appreciate being lied to. In regards to the exchange, I would have been more than fine with the refurb, but, they lied to me. This was confirmed to me, when I spoke the nice Apple support guy. He confirmed what I had read on these threads about refurb, and confirmed that the serial number starting with 5 means refurb. He is very nice and very helpful, and agreed that I should not have been mislead like that.
Thanks again for your help Allan. Really really appreciate it.

I use my iphone 5 to record home videos. I have an apple tv but dvd burners dont have a hdmi plug in. Any suggestions on how i can burn videos from iphone 5?
I had a av cord that plugged into the iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 but its not compatible with the 5 connector. Right now i have to email myself the videos in small segments and open and save on the iPad 2 to burn them.  Is there an easier way to burn these from my iPhone 5 or through air play on apple tv?
    Thanks

Connect the phone by USB to the computer, import with image capture, iPhoto or whatever application you use to import movies, drop it into iTunes.

i can't burn a playlist to a disc from itunes, it comes up with no supported disc burners found, any ideas?

    Additional information:
-also ran "Repair" with new download of iTunes
-am using the same spindle of CDs that worked perfectly a month ago.  Tried another brand also to be safe.  None worked.
-ran CD/DVD diagnostics within iTunes with Apple Care - no issues apparent
-also tried write-speed 20X on advice of Apple Care (don't know why they thought 20X would be the magic number after the other 3 I tried didn't work)
-tried running itunes in another user account on the computer - same problem, same error code
-Apple suggested it was a copyright issue.  I can't even burn music that I created/recorded myself, so that doesn't make sense.
-They thought maybe Quicktime wasn't installed properly, so we checked a film in Windows Media - it played, meaning Quicktime was fine apparently.
    Solution:
Unclicked CD text option & Sound Check, ran burn from the File drop down menu (max speed) on a Philips CD-R and it worked!  Had been right clicking the playlist name and selecting Burn option from there.  That being said, it did not work on 2 other brands prior, with same settings.  Not sure why.  Just happy it's working again. Is it a brand issue?

  • 64-bit Vista - "No supported disc burners found"

    Hi,
I'm running Windows Vista 64-bit on an HP Pavilion dv9000t laptop. The model DVD-R/W drive I have is "Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-850S".
I'm unable to burn songs to CDs to make an audio CD. Under "Advanced in the preferences dialog, on the "Burning" tab, I see "No supported disc burners found".
I'm able to burn data CDs outside of iTunes. I also confirmed that I can burn audio CDs using Windows Media Player. I'm also able to import songs from audio CDs into iTunes.

These Instructions will help you get iTunes working on a 64 bit OS.
Go to http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.cfm and download the newest drivers for Your Operating System (Driver installer for AMD64 and Intel EM64T processors. It’s the 2nd on the page).
Follow these instructions to uninstall the old Drivers. http://www.gearsoftware.com/wiki/index.php?title=DRIVERS:Windows_-_Updating%2C_removing%2C_64_bit_versions%2C_etc#Manual_Removal_.E2.80.9 364-bit
After the old drivers are removed run the installer for the new drivers.
After the drivers are installed reboot your computer.
    Next Install iTunes.
After iTunes is installed DO NOT START IT UP.
    Download this folder http://stahlhammer89.com/apple/CD_Configuration.zip
Unzip the file and Place the CD Configuration Folder into your C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes Directory
Congratulations, your iTunes installation should run properly now.

  • Premiere Elements 11 - No Burners Detected

    Hi All,
When I try and burn a project to DVD I get the error showing on screen 'No Burners detected' - if i choose AVCHD the burner shows up.
    I am running windows 7 64bit.
Any ideas how to fix this issue.
    Sean

While you are figuring out if Hunt's article will help, you may create your DVD a different way
Create an ISO (Encore) or folder on your hard drive (Encore or Premiere Elements) and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no DVD player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help
Use Taiyo Yuden single layer or Verbatim Two layer Or Falcon Pro for inkjet printable Two layer

  • HELP AND OR OPINION MUCH APPRECIATED....Thanks!!!!

    Tech Details First:
iPod Click wheel (4th Gen) 20GB
    Compaq nx9010(laptop)
    XP (SP2)
Using USB connection from iPod to Computer
Ok, Hi Guys/Gals, this may be a little long, but I feel detail is the only way to get the best help [please :)] and or advice and opinion. So I will take it from the start............
Ok last Sat (3rd Dec) I got the iPod, only paid £50GBP and it was spanking, not a scratch on the chrome and not a song on the hardrive. (crackheads to hae some use...Lol!!)
So I was very happy, plugged into comp and said I needed to format and or restore so could be used on comp...Fair enough d/loaded latest software update, installed, ran it didnt say need update, so I restored it.
Completed restoration and plugged in, was detected by iTunes afer a minute or so, then I copied the library over..No probs and a very happy me!!
    Had no probs at all.
THEN, I spoke to friend who just bought a brand new mini but said he couldnt get his comp to recognise, so I told him I had software and bring it over and we will update it...Did this no probs, and also gave him about 300 songs.
    This was on Wednesday.
Now last night, I connected iPod and it not being recognised. It isnt recognised by iTunes, but it is recognised by the 'remove hardware safely' option on toolbar as 'Mass storae device'...though sometimes wont let me 'safely remove' it from the usb port and sometimes it will.
At one point I dont know what I did but I saw the folder and exclamation mark icon, but I resetted it and it was ok, but taking long to play songs, so i turned off and went bed...Woke up, chkd iPod and was running absolutely fine, as it was all week.
BUT still not recognised by comp, though is in comp as 'F' drive, though i cannot right click it as it crashes 'My Computer' folder.
Anyway, read these and other forums for eight hours (when I should have done some Xmas shopping..Lol!) and see many peeps had the same problem....So I tried EVERY way that I saw in these threads..I will give a few examples (feel free to ask if I tried others I dont mention):
*Try in 'Disk' mode (not recgonised by iTunes or updater)
*Uninstall and re-install iTunes/updater (Twice updater:will add to this in a minute!)
*Many others, aprt from ' Mitch's ' idea of dropping the iPod..LOL!! That is really only a LAST RESORT FOR ME AT THIS POINT.
Anyway, ONCE earlier this evening, MY iPOD was recognised by the updater (but only offered the option to RESTORE) and I was scared to RESTORE as I was unsure if it would be recognised later. When I closed updater, iTunes automatically opened and recognised the iPod too!!! So I was happy and thought problem was over, but I was baffled as to what I had done to rectify the problem...Anyway, I re-booted comp to chk if all ok, but back to same problems.
And thats where I am at at the moment.
    SO MY QUESTIONS ARE THUS:
*Do you think me adding my friends iPod to my computer and doing an update had an affect??
*I can access a comp at my Parents house 2moro, if I d/loaded update software and the comp at their house recognises iPod, IF I was to RESTORE the iPOD, would it only be restored and usable on their comp, or mine aswell??
*If the restore (performed on mums comp) was done would it DEFINETLY work on mine??
*Is it really worth risking the RESTORE if I am gonna have the same problem (possibly) anyway?
I say this because I already have all the songs on my Comp on the iPod, and there wouldnt be THAT MUCH more for me to put in Library than I already have, maybe 200 at most.
SO should I just appreciate the fact that the iPOD itself is still working fine (seems so at least) and has my songs on it already, also the fact I got it £50 and be happy with that, or should I still worry about it not being recognised.
ALSO, just to add (as I forgot earlier in writing) that a couple of times it has come up with the message on my comp (in a grey little box) saying basically the iPOD needs to be formatted or restored to work on the computer and gives an option to UPDATE, but then freezes.
Again, IM SORRY for the length, but I think it is best to state ALL thats happened, so anyone that can help has at least a good jist of what is going on.
    So I will more than appreciate ANY help/info or advice and definetly ANY opinions, on whether I should be content the iPOD is working etc;
This is my first post, and over time hope that as my experience grows with the iPod (as I will be buying another in the future for sure ) then I will also be able to share my knowledge with fellow members here.
Thanks in advance for any help and or opinions from the peeps on the forum....
    Thanks!!

    Hi,
    Few issues here
    1. Yes, doing a Restore will erase all data in your iPod
    2. Do you have your Music with your iTunes?
    3. It is only a timing issue to me, your iPod will soon will get freeze and then with a sad iPod icon - I had few experiences like that in the past.
    4. You have to make a decision whether you would like to take a risk, it is not 100% sure it will work in your case.
5.If you decide to have a go, you have to do in the following steps:-
as your iPod cant get recognized by your PC, then you have to plug it with a Mac, and very likely it will get "force mount" in this way. Open the Disk Utility, and highlight your iPod icon, and go to Tab of "Erase"-but format in "MS Dos files system", then eject your iPod, go to find a PC, and plug your iPod with it, and a window will pop up indicating that your iPod cant be read and need reformat. Click ok, then open the iPod updater with the PC and click Restore.
I have to say once more, I will only make suggestion that it have proved to be worked in my case, but again, I am not definetly sure that it will work with your iPod. It is at your own risk.
Good luck, post here if you need further information

  • Such a farse. I used to have a high opinion of BT'...

We moved house on the 28th. The day of the move, as to be expected the phone and internet was cancelled at the old house and we moved to the new house that same day. Same homehub and everything, even the same type of phone socket that has a dedicated socket for the VDSL cable.
Well, first thing is we had to wait until the 8th of this month to get the phone line activated, which was bad enough and then BT said the internet would work that day but that it might take up to 12 oclock at night. Well 3 in the morning and still no internet. Also the day it was supposed to be activated I caught a BT engineer at the front door, not sure if he needed access to the house or if he was inspecting things outside but he said he would go to the cabinate and hook us all up for internet. He said something about "they" set us up on the wrong cabinate or some such thing and that he would deal with it. I got a call later saying he fixed everything and now it is up to BT to just do the activation on their end. Great... until it also was not working at all the nextday.
I contacted BT and they said the engineer screwed something up or something and they would send 1 engineer out the day after to sort one issue at the cabinate and then they would send another one out the next day to sort something out at the exchange. They assured me that it would be working today (that day in question) and the problem should be resolved by 1 PM and it can take up to 5 hours after that before the internet will start working. What happened? NOTHING.
Still orange light on the homehub and a flashing red icon at the bottom, same as it had been since we moved in.
So cut to yesterday, I contacted BT again and the technician or who ever he is did all kinds of tests, had me turn it off and on, reset the settings INCORRECTLY the first time by having me turn off the homehub and hold the reset for 20 seconds which did exactly nothing. He said everything should be working, but it wasn't. He said he would call me back in 6 hours... So about 6PM he called me back and went through the same proceedures again and I told him the settings were not reset last time so should I try leaving it powered on and perform the reset? He said errr yes try that. My god, so it reset and I found the plastic card with the default credentials and info to get back into it. It was still not working.
So he said it has to be the homehub that is the problem because he said he can tell it is all connected correctly and he said it "has" and internet connection, but I don't have a high opinion of his skills because of my experience. So now it's 6 PM yesterday and he orders me a new homehub which means I have to wait even longer, wait Saturday, wait Sunday and maybe Monday I might get the homehub.
This homehub I have is already the second one because for some reason it stopped working and BT had to replace it. Now I need a third one? Really?
I am just so sick of the whole thing. I have not had my own internet connection since the 27th of last month. If there were other ISP's that were similarly priced and didn't have speed capping I would honestly move my internet away from BT.
I am really frustrated and angry about this. It has been nothing but one big bungle after the next. Delay after delay.
I am barely surviving on BT WiFi with a weak connection that barely gives me dialup speeds when it actualy works and I have to now wait till Monday and hope I get the new homehub and that it resolves the problem.
What can BT do for me to compensate for all this massive waste of my time and extra delays stacked on top of delays? Everything I do is online, I research online, I communicate online, I watch videos online, I'm a youtuber and I cannot put out videos on dialup speeds that keep dropping. I'm just really tired of all of this nonsense with the internet not working. Then to add insult to injury, according to BT's official speed tests I won't even get half the speed I pay for. I pay for 76 Mbit and they said I might get 22-30 Mbit.
Please, someone from BT give me some good news, a resolution, compensation, proper speeds, something... Last time I had an issue I mentioned it on the forum here and a BT person asked me to click some link in their profile and provide my info there and I actually got a phone call and the person sorted out my problem. I am really hoping to get some positive outcome on this also.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have no wired connection any longer. I used to have a wired connection at the old house till the engineers wiring broke down due to how they wired the house up and then a new engineer came out, cut the data extension out of the loop and forced me to use wifi, which I despise. So now I am at the new house I still have no wired connection, I cannot just go putting wires everywhere. Honestly, at this point, after considering the delays, BT's engineer doing a cowboy job with the wiring and then charging us £130 to fix their own screw up and leave us without a wired data extension, coupled with messing me around on the phone delaying things while they "investigate" for 6 hours... Even if I were to get even 50% of the speed I am paying for I am almost certain to ditch BT infinity at the earliest available time, which is late this month based on what I was told before we moved house. They specifically said after that date that if I wanted to switch broadband providers I could and not incurr any charges. So after talking it over with everyone in this house we are in agree ment that we no longer want BT internet. It is just a confluence of problems on top of problems delays on top of delays and then realising about the £130 over problems caused by a new BT engineer fixing the BT cowboy wiring job which broke down and cut the phone and internet off in the process. I am just numb at this point. I honestly do not know if BT could do anything at all to keep us as a broadband customer at this point. Pretty much stuck with them for the phone line due to a new 12 month contract initiating since moving in, but soon as the internet contract expires, we'll almost certainly switch to virgin media.
As soon as I explained the situation to the rest of the people in this house, they wanted to ditch BT internet right now till I told them the contract is not quite up until later this month.
Back before the BT cowboy wiring job screwed up, I had nothing but priase for BT. Price was great, download was about 75 Mbit, upload was about 18 Mbit, everything was smooth, ping jitter was almost nonexistent and very over all stable. My opinions are entirely upside down now. Speeds are going to be bad by official "accurate" estimates, fees for them fixing their own mess, delays in getting internet up and running at this house.
My god. After this, I will gladly put up with lower upload speeds and peak-time speed throttling from virgin media if it means I get an actual fast stable connection again.

  • Music app and the mother of all oversights in my opinion...

    (iPhone 4S 32GB iOS 5.1)
I've highlighted the questions as i've ranted on...
This is an odd one regarding the music app. I've been using itunes match now for a little while. Album artwork is still buggy; it appears that the artwork is re-downloading every time i launch the app resulting in no artwork everytime an album is played until it's reloaded. This to me as a music lover is very annoying as i like all my musical ducks pointing the same way. So my method of getting around this was to turn off Match all together and go back to the ol' classic tried and tested manual music management. All music removed and started fresh. I load up my manually selected songs and albums, All is well. Except cover flow. For some reason now even with itunes match turned off; Cover Flow shows me a bunch of completely random albums that aren't even on the iphone yet there is no sign of them on the regular view what-so-ever. Completely unsearchable.
Anyone have any ideas on this / have the same issue?
I've taken all the usual steps, restoring the phone etc.
Next and finally the biggest annoyance with the best phone on the market.
I use my phone on the go 99% of the time. I use the earphones with the mic. For some reason during a call I can hear my own voice in my ears. This can be tested by making a call to 1-800 APPLE and blowing into the mic. There SHOULDN"T be any noise. The issue being is that i can hear a mouse pass wind on the other side of the street but the person on the other end is in the mix somewhere. When i used to have the 3gs this problem didn't exist... So i gathered must be the noise cancellation mic. Nope. Making a call with the Skype app the problem goes away. it's like being in a sound booth with just the person i'm on a call with nice and clear in my ears. So the hardware is sound. I took it the the Apple store in SOHO and spoke with a genius about it. We tried 3 iphones, 4 sets of earphones even his own personal iphone... Same problem persists. He had to concede that he had no idea why it was happening and said he now was going to be bothered by it!
Does anyone have a work around or solution?
I've even bought non Apple headphones to see if they work but to no avail. I don't need to hear myself and my surroundings Apple Devs... please fix it!!

    - Apple - Windows hardware? - does it really matter?
    Either.
    - Which software? - many have recommended iTunes, is it really the best?
iTunes is most definitely not the best ripping tool. It has no flexibility in file naming, and does not have as good error correction as Exact Audio Copy or Audiograbber.
    - Ripping settings? - audio file format???? - hard disk space needed?
This is where it gets a little tricky. Given what you are trying to, an uncompressed audio format like WAV or AIFF would fit the best, and AIFF is probably the better choice since it allows tagging of the files. Figure 10 MB per minute of music, or about 500 MB per CD that you rip. For 800 CDs, allow at least a half TB.
A compressed lossless format would be about half the size, but unfortunately iTunes does not support the leading uncompressed lossless format (FLAC), and the proprietary one that iTunes does support (Apple Lossless) has very little support outside of Apple products. So that is too much of a gamble given your requirement about "use with any player/software in the near future."
That is my opinion! Given that you have pretty strict requirements, and that you only want to do this once, do a little more research before you decide...

  • Need expertise opinion on ADF custom BackEnd implementation

    Hi all,
Jdeveloepr version: Studio Edition Version 11.1.1.5.0.
I am working on an ADF application and trying to go with the following implementations which are currently working fine while unit testing (me alone- single user) . I would like to have a expert opinion as whether this would be a scalable solution for an application which will support multiple users simultaneously . I am very new to ADF framework , so please advice
-The page are mostly inside bounded taskflows, which are nested and having backing beans are different scope. The backing bean is talking to a service layer (java classes ) to call the Webservice layer few database tables and then integrate and process the data to be shown on the front end.
(we have decided to opt out of drag and drop technique in ADF, due to some UI design reasons and large Webservice calls, though it is possible as mentioned by some experts)
The questions are based on the Database interaction, we have created an appmodule which has several VOs abased on entity objects and accessing them programmatically from the service layer like
    1. Get the appmoduleDatacontrol via the id name in Databindings.cpx and get corresponding VO implementation classes to invoke custom methods written inside. How good would be the connection pooling and state management of the application modue in production environments.
    2. for insertion - we call createROW on VO implementation and call an commit on the row implementation classes after adding detials to the new row.
    3. for select op- we create filter criteria on the view and apply them programmatically to get the rows.
    4. for update- get the row using the filters VO and manipulate the row using RowImpl classes and do a commit on then. (a commit on VO or commit on RowImpl, which would be better?)
Any pointers to tutorials/Blogs related optimizing and testing this implemtnation to this would be really helpful.
    Thanks,

  • External DVD burners once and for all!

I did not buy my mini with a dvd burner on purpose because I wanted to use Lacie light scrib. So, does it work? Can you use other external burners with iLife 5 and iDvd 5 as advertised when it came out? Or am I wasting my time?

    Edward,
iDVD5 will let you "save as disk image" and then burn the image with Toast or Disk Utility. on external drives.
Also there are some other helper apps and maybe even drivers from LaCie that will let 'em burn directly from iDVD, but I prefer the image route in any case....
