Optimize drives "Empty"

On my Windows Server 2012 I go to Optimize Drives and I select Change Settings as it SHOULD be Defragmenting Weekly as it states. I found that when I clicked on Choose Drives the Select all was choosen but NO drives showed up. I just checked,
if I DEselected the Select all, the drives did NOT magically appear. I am up to date on all software and updates. This is a VMWare Virtual Server, however I do NOT think that that would be the issue, although it COULD. The image below shows
the settings as they were without any options selected or changed. It was set it and forget it for the weekly server optimization or server defrag.
This is development so I can edit "LIVE" and not worry. I am not sure if there is something I can check or look into.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay in reply.
From my test I cannot repro your issue. However I noticed that not all my disks are listed in your step 3 - storage spaces are not listed. Thus I assume it will check the volume status and hide a part of them.
Whether any SSD is involved in your computer?
Meanwhile incase it is caused by third party app, test if the issue persists in Safe Mode or Clean Boot mode (incase defragment cannot be started in Safe Mode).

• Windows server 2012 Optimize drives empty

I am trying to select the drives I want to schedule for weekly optimization but the drives aren't showing up.
Select all doesn't work either.
I have to manual run it.

Hi,
The physical aspects of the storage (whether it’s a SCSI disk, or a RAID or a thin provisioned LUN etc.) are not taken into consideration in the default scheduled task. Please check the device type on the server.

• Xserve Raid Not Showing all Drives Empty - No Green Lights on Xserve Raid Drives

I have an Xserve Raid. I recently set it up with my Xserve server with fiber cables and now when the Xserve Raid system boots and starts all the drives show as empty in the Raid monitor. Not sure if I have something configured wrong and I think I shut it down incorrectly before I got it hooked up right. When I first got it I was able to see the lights on all the drives but now it boots but no drives show up at all. I have fiber cables to the host Xserve machine and the Xserve Raid plugged into the network with only 1x ethernet cables (not 2 if that makes a difference). When I try to manage the Xserve Raid all drives show as empty even though all the 500GB drives are plugged in. Not seeing any green lights when the Xserve raid boots indicates something is up. I reset the controller cards to stock with the paper clip to factory settings. Does anyone have any ideas on what to try. Anyone have this issue? I haven't found any discussions except one that had a single side of drives go down because of a bad controller card. My Xserve Raid shows no drives at all. Any help is appreciated.

Expansion is a 2 step process: First, you expand the array. Second, you merge the slices. The documentation is clear on step #2, but the GUI doesn't FORCE you to do it. However, it is necessary.
If you did both steps, try rebooting your host and see if it picks up the changed size. It does work... the usual issue though is growing the file system to recognize the additional size. On Linux, I can't help you.

• PMG5 says jump drive empty.

I hope this is the right place to post.
I usually put documents from work(on pc) to home on a removable 256mb drive. I had allot of info to move this time so I put the word docs in folders and my mac says the drive is empty. it does show that there is memory missing 185mb out of 256 but no flolders are showing. This has never happened before but I have never placed anything in folders before(usually just word docs) what can I do if anything???

ok it worked...but now I have a question.....I used finder and found a doc. at the very bottom of the finder window it showed my drive and then the folders on down to the doc I did the search for.
The funny thing is the removable disk is called my stuff. the very next folder is labled trashes????
Why when I open the drive when it mounts does it appear empty but when I search I can find my missing docs????
Thanks for your help

• Macbook pro trying to eject by itself (cd drive empty)

Hi. My Macbook Pro has started to act weird lately. It's displaying the eject symbol on screen many times a day by itself, as if I was hitting the eject button on the keyboard even if the CD drive is empty.
Yesterday the whole keyboard and trackpad just froze.. which makes me think that the keyboard could be damaged?

• Fusion Drive empty space lost

Hi to everyone!
I use Fusion Drive 1 TB on a iMac 21'. I've tryed to create a new partition with Bootcamp in order to install W7, but it was lasting too much (it seemed stopped), so I've decided to cancel Bootcamp (Command-Q) and to start again. What my surprise was that using Disk Utility, the space I've assigned to install W7 was created, however I couldn't install W7. Then I've decided to erase that partition in order to recovering the free space, but however I couldn't re-size the main partition Macintosh HD. Now I have 740,97 Gb with free space, but I can't re-size Macintosh HD. Neither I can create a new partition, Disk Utility doesn't work. I don't know what else to do. I've reinstalled everything with Time Machine and I've reiniciate the computer using Command+R, in order to use Disk Utility out of the operating system, but the result is the same. I feel distressed. Can anyone help me? I show you a pic of my Disk Utility with the problem.
Thank you very much to everybody. Greetings.

I'VE GOOOOT IIIITT!!!!!!!!
LowLuster, yesterday I've been thinking about your suggestion before you've told me it, but finally I've recovered all the lost space in my Fusion Drive unit. How have I done it? I tell all of you briefly:
While MacOS running, I used again Bootcamp Assistant to create a little 20 Gb partition. The computer restarts but I using Option button, I chose again MacOS. Once more I run Bootcamp Assistant to recover "the lost space", or at least the space that I've quit to Macintosh HD partition to creat Bootcamp partition (those 20 Gb). When it finished, what was my surprise using Disk Utility observing that Bootcamp Assistant recovered all the space on my Fusion Drive! Oh yeah! I couldn't believe it!
I caused the problem of lost space canceling the process when Bootcamp was creating the partition. That was my mistake. So I've learned the lesson
Here is the sample of it:
Thank you very much all of you and Greetings from Spain.

• Sparse bundles on a networked drive emptied!?! HELP!!!

Our workgroup relies on data in sparse bundles, served to a small workgroup via Mavericks Server. There was a glitch, and now all sparse bundles (almost a TB of important data) are showing up extremely small (~400kb) and have no mountable disks. Can anyone explain this? Any ideas? Any way to recover that data? This was work created today, and has not been backed up yet.

• No drives for automatic optimization

In server 2012 I goto optimize drives click on "change settings" (for schedule), click on "Choose" (drives) and no drives are listed are listed that can be scheduled for automatic optimization?? I can also optimize the drive
manually, and, to make things more confusing, if I take the drive out and put the same HDD in a Windows 7 box it is listed.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Kris

I have Server 2012R2 with a Perc H710 Raid Controller. The drives used to be there. Now they're not. The only drive utility I've installed is Macrium Reflect for disk imaging and backup. This is a Windows bug.
I'll use a third party defrag program. Thanks MS.

• What are the best affordable external drive options for my iMac ?

Hello,
I am a fairly recent newcomer to Macintosh as my primary personal computing platform. I have recently installed Adobe CS4 Design Premium Student Edition on a late 2006 20in iMac and have several important questions about external hard drives. First of all, everyone knows that using any personal computer (whether you its a Macintosh, or a PC running Windows and/or Linux) without an acceptable way to backup critical data is no different than driving in your car without your seat belt fastened. I need advice for a good external hard disk solution for backup and several other important computing tasks given the following realities
1. Contrary to what I to originally thought, I do not have Firewire 800, but instead have access to dual firewire 400 ports in addition to USB 2.0. My concern over connection speed in regards to Adobe's recommendation to use RAID 0 arrays for scratch disks used by Photoshop CS4. Adobe also recommends that scratch disks for photoshop CS4 are assigned on a hard disk that is not your startup disk. Nontheless, Adobe has no objection to use your startup disk assuming it has plently of Free space (and mine does w/ 189.53 GB available)
2. Do really need RAID 0 to achieve the performance I would need? I had prior Mac based training with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign, in High school. I have not used this software in 4 years and am not only trying to refresh my skills but to learn the software. In other words I am still in the beginner stage With practice and patience, I will certainly learn the software and use it to the best of my creative energies. Given the situation if my work becomes complex enough over time how important is RAID 0 when I make purchase of an external hard disk? I known that the disk utility in Mac OS X allows the user to create a Raid array. This seems like the cheapest way to accomplish the job. However, the purchase of an external Hard Drive must be able to safely backup my system and also provide adequate performance.
3. Speaking of backup, I am one of those users who is still stubbornly clinging to Mac OS X Tiger. However, updating to a new OS has been required ritual for my previous two PCs. That said given that Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard will be out in mere months, I do not see the wisdom now in upgrading to Leopard. After all as a higher education student, money is tight and see Snow Leopard as far more compelling and future-proof upgrade. Snow Leopard is getting better plumbing and will also include Microsoft Exchange Server support (possibly the biggest selling point). I also have interest in using Boot Camp in 10.6 (or 10.5) for running windows software (that are useful for my academics) and games (particularly Half-Life 2 and other Steam games that can run well within my Mac's fairly limited gaming capabilities. If I decide to use Boot Camp I have to partition my internal hard disk. This further complicates finding a very reasonable, affordable, and reliable external disk solution given everything that I have mentioned. Any help is highly appreciated.
Thanks.

I don't think you should worry about the RAID stuff. The only way you could create a RAID is by using external drives, or one those external enclosures with two drives inside. Any speed advantage of such a RAID would be mostly negated by the FireWire 400 connection.
Use your internal drive space for speed critical functions. Use a FireWire 400 external drive for additional storage space, where speed is important but not critical, such as storing your existing media (including your things like your iTunes library files). Use a separate cheaper USB 2.0 external drive for your Time Machine (or whatever method) backup archive, where speed is not that important at all (some people even use a network connection for their Time Machine backup).
You can get a FireWire 800 drive and use an adapter to connect to FireWire 400. The connection won't be any faster on your iMac, but you can use the drive later with a Mac that does have FireWire 800. There are drives that have FireWire 400 and 800, and USB 2.0.
I like the drives sold by OWC
http://www.macsales.com/
I often buy the drive enclosure empty and find a good deal on the hard drive mechanism that I want. OWC sells most of their drives empty. My current Time Machine drive is actually one of these USB adapters
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/
connected to a Western Digital 750GB SATA drive that I got for about $70. Found that deal through dealmac.com. Couldn't think of a cheaper way to add that large amount of backup space, and it works very well. The internal drive in my iMac is only 160GB, so most of my personal data is on an external FireWire 400 drive; both drives are backed up by Time Machine.

• Why is disk optimization not available on our Surface with 8.1?

We have a Surface with Windows 8.1 RT. When I go to the Tools and try to Optimize (trim) the SSD it says "Optimization not available" and the Analyze and Optimize buttons are greyed out. I've seen posts where others are able to optimize
their drives, so what am I missing in this case. I checked the Services for Optimization and it was set to manual, but even when turning it on at startup automatically it makes no difference. Any ideas on how to optimize on the Surface?
Why is the option available if you can't use it?

This is normal for SSD.
Do some reading here:
Should You Defrag an SSD?
How to Use "Optimize Drives" to Defrag HDD and TRIM SSD in Windows 8 and 8.1
S.Sengupta, Windows Entertainment and Connected Home MVP
S. Sengupta, I think you are missing the point of my original post. Of course I know you don't defrag an SSD. But you can optimize them using Trim. I have two other notebooks running Windows 8.1 and both have the ability to optimize the
SSDs as shown in the screenshot AnaBna posted. This is not normal behavior for the options to be greyed out, and only our Surface with 8.1 RT exhibits this behavior. Possibly this IS normal for a Surface, and if there is anyone else out there with
a Surface (regular, not Pro) willing to look they can tell me if theirs is also un-optimizable. The only thing that makes me think other's with a Surface can optimize is that when I searched for a solution to this others mention they can do this on their
Surface.
I say this with all respect, but I think sometimes on this forum people just fire off answers very quickly without really reading the whole question or knowing the answer just to get credit for posts and points.

• External hard drive shows up under internal hard drive volume?

History:
Purchased new Macbook Pro and Lightroom 2.
Migrated old Macbook to new Macbook Pro, including Lightroom 1.
Installed Lightroom 2 and updated to Lightroom 2.2.
Had Lightroom 1 images on multiple external hard drives. Moved all images to new 1tb and 1.5tb Lacie external drives.
Imported old catalog into Lightroom 2.2 and now one of the external (1.5tb) shows up under my internal hard drive in Lightroom.
internal hard drive>Volumes>external hard drive>empty image folders
A partial part of this external hard drive (some image folders) also shows up as it's own volume.
I started by selecting missing image folders and using the locate missing folder method. the folders then show up on: internal hard drive>Volumes>external hard drive>image folders
Any suggestions on how to remedy this problem?
thank you, Shawn

This is reparable, but an Adobe Tech did it. I had this problem some time ago and they fixed it. Dan Tull, one of the Adobe Techs, was accepting Catalogs for investigation and repair. Not sure if he still is.
I have not heard of such problems for a while.

• Deleted iMovie Projects and Events, still no free room on hard drive

I've moved (not copied) my iMovie files to an external hard drive, emptied trash, and rebooted but this has still not made a difference on my hard drive. My movies are showing up as the majority of space. Any thoughts? I have a MacBook Pro and I'm working with iMovie '11, OS X, and Mountain Lion. Is there somewhere else they would be stored? When I moved the files, I did it within iMovie. I'm somewhat new to Macs and thought I knew how to do most of the basic things, yet I can't figure out where these files are!
Thanks for any help!!

Hi Brandon, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It is not recommended to back up/save other data to a TM partition, but I've done it (and still do it), and I know others have too. ymmv
Whether or not iMovie will be able to access it from an external source, I do not know for sure, but I believe so. I'd recommend either trying a small test file or posting in the iMovie forum. Good luck.

• My Macbook Pro feels slow and the hard drive is making a faint rattling noise.

I'm seriously considering taking it back to the Apple Store. I've had it for just over 4 months.
The hard drive is a lot louder than it used to be and rattles faintly.
I used to be able to open various large applications like Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Fireworks for web design all at once, and each application worked fine transferring different files from one to the other.
I'm really disappointed that after 4 months my MacBook Pro feels like an ordinary laptop. It's embarrassing to think I paid £1000 for something that will decrease in performance ability over such a short period of time.
I repair disk permissions, have 15% + free space on my hard drive, empty the recycle bin, pretty much everything that should help un-clog the system.
I have also use compressed air to blow dust out of the fans and around the insides of my MacBook Pro. (No I have not damaged anything, the noise is roughly the same as it was BEFORE I took the MacBook apart), and still no luck.
Any help, suggestions or even sharing a similar experience would be appreciated!
Thanks!

I woulg take it back to the store, the HD could have issues, it might be loose, I hope they don't void your warranty because you opened it

• Finding RAW files on Portable Hard Drive

I've just bought a Portable Hard Drive for storing my RAW files. (LR recommended good practice, keeping 50% of my C drive empty!!)
Now...I am able to download from my Memory Card to the Portable Drive and tell LR where to find the images. - That's dandy!.
I can even move a small number (e.g. 6) RAW files from the C drive to the portable drive. The thumbnail then gets a "?" and when selected, tells me it cant find the (RAW) file and asks me where it is. I can do that since I moved them to a portable drive folder that I set up - That's fine too
What I don't know is how to move 3,000+ RAW files in (e.g.) 75 folders from the C drive to the portable drive without having to tell LR where EVERY one of them is.
LR help says
To locate missing photos in a folder and its subfolders, select a folder in the Folders panel, choose Library > Synchronize Folder, and click Show Missing Photos.
But if I understand this correctly it is simply showing me that there are missing photos (not where they ought to be)
More helpfully, LR help also says
3(Optional) In the Locate dialog box, select Find Nearby Missing Photos to have Lightroom search for other missing photos in the folder and reconnect them automatically.
Does this mean I need to specifically describe the location of ONE from each folder then let LR find NEARBY Missing RAW files?
This might be a daft question, but do I need to set up my portable HD directory structure to be the same as my C drive to automate the synchronize??
Sorry if I'm missing what everyone else knows.
Steve McG

I have the same problem in reverse. I have always had my original files on my external drive (and it just saved me in a crash last month.

However now I -have copied- all my files to E: (an internal drive on my new computer), so I am 'missing' all my files.

I understand the concept above about creating a master folder in LR2, and then does tha mean that you can locate one file in the master, and ask for all missing near that one and that it -will- go down to all subfolders?

Lastly, how do I (we) get there from here?
On my hard drive, I do have a master folder. It is E:\PictureFolder. Everything I own is under that one, in their own major subject folders (01FamilyMiller, 02FamilySharp, etc.). Under those are yyyymmdd_<shootname> folders with the actual files.

In LR2, I have imported the <shootname> folder only, so LR has 20080101_NewYearsAtLeslies, 20080430_VermontTrip, etc., e.g. strictly chronological, even though they are in separate category folders on the hard drive.

Maybe now is the time to put major subject area and personal vs. professional master folders on LR2.

Before I do any changes to folder structure in LR2, how do I get my hard drive folders connected to the ones in LR2, en masse?

Do I just create PictureFolder in LR2 and then move all the "?", chronological LR folders under it??

• Communication to the disk drive failed

i've experienced this problem after burning 3 dvds, it appeared on the fourth but the data was still burned on the cd. Now i am trying to burn some of my files on the cd and it appeared again, this time it didn't burn the file at all.what could be the problem?

I get this error randomly and only since I installed Leopard. I never had any issues like this before.
My drive is also: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857
I tried various media. Cheap stuff and brand media as well. I even tried Apple's own DVDs and still get the same error. What is interesting is that if I leave about 1GB of the drive empty, the burning completes.
I noticed that the errors usually happen toward the end of the burning, so that is why I decided to leave some space unused. Of course this way I can fit only about 3GBs of data on the disc, but at least I don't have to waste them completely. I had about 10 bad discs yesterday, so you can probably understand that it was getting a bit frustrating.
Did anyone find a good solution to this issue? Restarting does not work in my case.
