Oracle SID - should be upper-case?

A lot of the Oracle docs/examples refer to SIDs in examples using lower-case names (for example, "prod"). And I've certainly seen a lot of lower-cased SIDs in many years of Oracle work.
However, in 11gR2 (and I think R1 as well), if you enter a lower-case SID in dbca and accept all the default locations, template settings, etc., you end up with both a lower-case and upper-case directory in flash_recovery_area (e.g., both a "PROD" and a "prod"). Lower-case "prod" has a control file copy, while upper-case PROD has the archivelog and onlinelog subdirectories. However, if you enter an upper-case SID, you get everything in one upper-case PROD subdirectory (no lower-cased "prod" is created).
I know this isn't a huge deal, but I'm wondering...is upper-case SID the intent? Is this a dbca bug?

Either works, but you must be consistent.

  • JDBC send data to oracle, oracle only accept column name in Upper case

    Hi experts,
I am doing a scenario File --> XI --> JDBC,  JDBC send data to a Oracle 10g database, I have configured JDBC receiver to use XML-SQL format. in oracle database ,  table "EMPLOYEE" has a column "NAME", but when I send data to oracle using JDBC receiver, the column is "name", then XI complains
" 'EMPLOYEE' (structure 'insert'): java.sql.SQLException: FATAL ERROR: Column 'name' does not exist in table 'EMPLOYEE'.
can anyone help me to let oracle accpet column "name". I can't change colum in JDBC receiver from "name" to "NAME".
    Thanks a lot.

<i>can anyone help me to let oracle accpet column "name"</i>
Making Oracle case insensitive is not possible (in my opinion). By default all object names are stored in UPPER case in the rdbms dictionary.
When XI searches for column name in Oracle, this search is case sensitive. So u have to configure accordingly.

  • Set Oracle to force searching string by upper case

Our application using Oracle 11.1 and Hibernate. Data store in our database in mix cases. many of our queries are like select first_name from persons where upper(first_name) like 'DAV%'
It returns Dave, DAVE, dave, David, DAVIE etcAccording to our developers, Hibernate does not send query select first_name from persons where upper(first_name) like 'DAV%' it only doesselect first_name from persons where first_name like 'DAV%'This only return DAVE and DAVID.
Question: Is there a way to set Oracle, at database level or table level, to always search by upper case, that is, select first_name from persons where first_name like 'DAV%' is converted to select first_name from persons where upper(first_name) like 'DAV%'

Yes, there is a way. New in 10GR2....
    You can set NLS_COMP.
    http://www.orafaq.com/node/91
I tested it and it works well...
    Example: SQL>  alter session set NLS_COMP=ANSI;
    Session altered.
    SQL> alter session set NLS_SORT=BINARY_CI;
    Session altered.
    SQL> select name from names where name = 'Johny Jacobson';
    NAME
    Johny Jacobson
    johny jacobson
JOHNY JACOBSONI hope you find this helpful.

  • How can I define that the value of a column should always be in UPPER case

    Hi,
I want to make sure that the value in a column is always in UPPER case.
Can we give this condition while creating or altering a table.
A trigger can do it easily, but I was wondering if we could define a column to have values with upper case all the time, independent of what values are inserted. I mean if we give a lower case value in the insert statement, it should be converted automatically to upper case & stored.
    I want something like
    Alter table MY_TABLE Modify ( col1_upper varchar2(25) default UPPER(Col1_upper));
But the above statement does not work as it references the col of the table.
    Thanks
    Sunil

Well, you can put a check constraint on to prevent someone from putting lowercase data in:
alter table my_table add constraint my_table_check_upper check (col1_upper = upper(col1_upper));However, I know of no way to modify the data being inserted/updated in a table without a trigger.

  • Issue with upper case in cyrillic characters - error with SID generation

    Hi all,
I have a problem loading a cyrillic string into a characteristic in a DSO.
I get an error message when trying to activate the data in the DSO.
The characteristic is a CHAR18 with the "lowercase letters" unmarked and there is an abap
routine to convert the string in upper case.
According to the error message, the string seems to be converted because the error shows the string in upper case ( the input was in lower case)  but the DSO data is not activated:
    " Value 'НЕУСТОЙКА 3498' (hex. '041D0415042304210422041E0419041A041000200033003400')
of characteristic A2_ALLOCN contains invalid characters",
I am working in an unicode system and I don´t know what is wrong...
Any input will be highly appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance,
    Elena

    Value 'НЕУСТОЙКА 3498'
Seems to be value contains invalid character.  Й
If you need to populate invalid char into target  maintain this in t- code RSKC , Then system allows the Invalide chars into the target

  • Update column data to Upper Case in parent and child table

    Hi ,
I am facing issue while updating column value to upper case in parent table and child table. How can i do that ?
    when updating parent row:
ORA-02292: integrity constraint (XXXXXXXXXXXXXX_FK) violated - child record found
    When updatng corresponding child row:
ORA-02291: integrity constraint (XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX_FK) violated - parent key not found
how can i update on both the places ?
    Regards,
    AA

I am facing issue while updating column value to upper case in parent table and child table. How can i do that ?
Why do you need to do that?
That is just ONE of several questions you should answer before you start modifying your data.
    1. What is your 4 digit Oracle version? (result of SELECT * FROM V$VERSION)
    2. If both values are the same case what difference does it make what that case is?hen you don't need to alter your original data.
    3. What is the source of the column values you are using now? If you change your data to upper case it will no longer be identical to the source data.
    4. What is your plan for enforcing future values to be stored in UPPER case? Are you going to use a trigger? Have you written and tested such a trigger to see if it will even work the way you expect?
    5. Why aren't you using a surrogate key instead of a 'business' data item? You have just demonstrated one reason why surrogate keys can be useful: their actual value is NOT important.
You should reexamine your problem and architecture and consider other alternatives.
One alternative is to add a new 'surrogate key' column to use as the primary key. Just create a new sequence and use a trigger to populate the new column. Your current plans will require a trigger to perform the case conversion so instead of the just use the trigger to provide the value.
If the change is being done to facilitate searching you could just add a VIRTUAL column UPPER_MY_COLUMN and index that instead. Then you could search on that new virtual column and the data values would still be identical to the original data source.

  • Petstore install problem on Derby and Mysql (Linux) - Upper case table name

    Hi
I seem to have a problem which may also be at the heart of many threads here - the tables are created in lower case yet referenced in UPPER CASE.
If the DB is case sensitive, the tables arent found.
does anyone have an UPPER CASED VERSION OF THE SETUP SCRIPT ????
    1) setup/sql/javadb/petstore.sql contains all table and field names in lower case
    in Netbeans look under ServerResources/sql
    i.e.
    create table tag(
    tagid INTEGER NOT NULL,
    tag VARCHAR(30) NOT NULL,
    refcount INTEGER NOT NULL,
    primary key (tagid),
    unique(tag)
    2) the petstore app tries to access using CAPITALISED NAMES
    i.e.
    Exception [TOPLINK-4002] (Oracle TopLink Essentials - 2006.8 (Build 060830)): oracle.toplink.essentials.exceptions.DatabaseException
Internal Exception: org.apache.derby.client.am.SqlException: Schema 'PETSTORE' does not existError Code: -1
Call:SELECT TAGID, REFCOUNT, TAG FROM TAG ORDER BY REFCOUNT DESC, TAG ASC
    Query:ReportQuery(com.sun.javaee.blueprints.petstore.model.Tag)

    at oracle.toplink.essentials.internal.databaseaccess.DatabaseAccessor.executeCall(DatabaseAccessor.java:437)
    3) In mysql, the table names are .......
    mysql> describe tag;
    --------------------------------------------------+
    | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra |
    --------------------------------------------------+
    | tagid | int(11) | NO | PRI | | |
    | tag | varchar(30) | NO | UNI | | |
    | refcount | int(11) | NO | | | |

  • Fetch data from IR to form in UPPER CASE format for text field items

    Hello,
Can anyone please help with this issue. I have a IR report with form and I want to fetch the data to upper case when I go to the form level to edit the details from the IR report. I am using the Oracle APEX in built automatic row processing DML to update, create or delete the records. Is their any way, where I can convert the data to upper case whenever user creates a new record or updates the existing record using the in-built automatic row processing DML.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Orton

    Jari,
I have tried your option but no luck. The thing is the text is getting converted from lower to upper case when i navigate from report to form level. But I want to save the data to the database all upper case, even if the user enters data in lower case and this applies for both inserts and updates. Whenever i tried to create or update a record, all the data should be converted to upper case before inserting or updating to the database.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Orton

  • OID Working Normally But I Want to Understand "oracle SID " Processes

I'm runninng OID as part of an Identity Mangagement 10.1.4.0.1 installation on Linux. When I look at the processes that oracle is running I see many "oracle<SID>" processes.
I'm looking for where I can read about the different types of processes that comprise OID on Unix/Linux. I'm particularly interested in knowing how "oracle<SID>" processes are created and destroyed -- is each process synonymous with an active connection to the directory?
Thank you for pointing me to the docs on this or telling me what you believe these "oracle<SID>" processes represent.

Those Oracle<sid> processes are database instance processes - OID is implemented in a database (where else?).
They should be there for the life time of your server - they should not be killed, destroyed or whatever - they can be stopped by logging into your server - after setting the proper environment variables, execute:
    sqlplus / as sysdba
    shutdown
    exit
The shutdown can take a while - it allows all active, current sessions to do their thing. Another option is shutdown immediate, which will kill active sessions, as soon as the running transaction finishes. Both options result in a clean shutdown, leaving the database in a consistent state.
A real killer is shutdown abort - it will simply abort all transactions, but leaves the database in an inconsistent state. Oracle will recover automatically in most cases.

  • Only upper case in geocoding servie response?

when calling the geocoding service, I always get the the result in upper case
    (i.e.
    http://elocation.oracle.com/geocoder/gcdemo.jsp?country=DE&match_mode=DEFAULT&address=ctive+media+NEUHAUS%0D%0Asteinstr.+75%0D%0A81667+m%FCnchen
Is it possible to get the result in the correct case?

    Okay, top tip.
I added the document listener which processed the text on each insert.
At this stage, I've only implemented keyword checking on single character inserts (to capture changes as they are typed) - multi character inserts need to be handled differently.
If I have a character I know can signal the end of a SQL keyword (space, carriage return, brace, parenthesis, comment etc) then I jump back to the last space in the document. This gives me the last "word" in the document.
Remove the last character (as this is the character that has triggered the event) and then see whether it is upper case or not? If not, should it be (is it a keyword)? If so, insert the upper case String in its place.
It was a bit fiddly to put the pieces together (a document listener which then has to use SwingUtilities to make the change using a third Runnable class) but it does exactly what I ask of it.
I have to implement a similar algorithm now to cope with deletions (what if a delete the "a" at the end of "selecta") and multi-character inserts.
Thanks for the advice. I've not used DocumentListeners before so this was doubly helpful.

  • Ln: 0653-417 /oracle/SID/oraarch// is a directory. (cannot unlink)

    Hi,
I have to restore a system for a DRP test.
    I first deleted the /usr/sap/SID, /sapmnt/SID and /oracle/SID directories.
Before starting the restore I have to create a symbolic link of oraarch on saparch because the mount is on oraarch. I did it with the following command :
    ln -s /oracle/SID/saparch/ /oracle/SID/oraarch/
after executing this line, it returns the error:
ln: 0653-417 /oracle/SID/oraarch// is a directory. (cannot unlink)
    Many thanks for your help
    Regards

    Yeah,
it is always the other way round than you think with "ln -s".
If you ever find a system with a link "b" pointing to "a"
you might safely assume I had may hands on it once when I had once again
no clue which way round the parameters work.  In this case I always execute
    ln -s a b
    just to re-ensure myself
So if the filesystem mounted is .../oraarch, saparch needs o be non-existent when executing
    ln -s /oracle/SID/oraarch /oracle/SID/saparch
see, just some twenty executions of "ln -s a b" and you are very sure to say which way round the parameters should be.

  • My itune gift card says it's not authorized.  I've tried to redeem by typing in upper case letters and lower case letters.  I've never had this problem before, what do I do so I can use this gift card?

I bought an itunes gift card yesterday and I have tried to redeem, but when I do I get a message the card has not been authorized.  I have typed in typed in the code as seen mostly upper case and I have tried lower case also.  Neither is working.  I've never had this problem before.  Should the store where I purchased it from done something to supposedly "activate" it.  I'm at a loss.  I do not have the store reciept a friend does, and I'm sure she desposed of it.

Yes, the retailer is supposed to activate the card. Otherwise they'd lose hundreds to shoplifting. What you normally should do is go back the retailer from whom you purchased the card and discuss the problem with them. They should either correctly activate the card or give you a new one. If they refuse to help, as some retailers do, or this was a gift so you cannot contact the retailer, go here:
    iTunes Support
and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store.

  • HT1338 My MacBook Pro (running Leopard 10.5.8) won't allow keyboard to type an upper case 'C' using the shift key...works fine with caps lock, or, with my Typinator workaround using double-typed lower case c (not always best). Any ideas?

My MacBook Pro keyboard won't type an upper case 'C' using the shift key... only with caps lock. Workaround has been to use Typinator by typing a double lower case c, not always the best solution. Mac is a refurbished model, which initially was fine. Apple tech helped me correct the quirk when it first appeared, but now it has returned and refuses fixes. Any ideas?

I'm willing to bet that this has something to do with iCloud.  I've been facing a frozen computer nearly every time I go into it.
In Activity Monitor I have seen two programs associate with iCloud that take up about 2.5 GB of memory (I only have 4 in the computer) -- causing everything to freeze.  One of these is called "iCloud Helper" and the other one is something like "Address Book Sync helper" -- I see parts of these names in the stuff you have posted.
I am at my wits' end with these and have written to Apple asking them to do away with these or fix them.  To get rid of the Address book sync thing I have gone into system preferences for iCloud and unchecked Contacts -- but then spontaneously it gets rechecked.  And oftentimes after I Force Quit the iCloud helper, it spontaneously turns on again.  My conclusion --- the iCloud is basically unusable.  It turns a Mac into the most useless, clogged, sluggish PC.  If this is happening to a lot of people's computers -- and I see no reason why yours or mine should be an exception -- these programs just might destroy Apple itself.
So -- I'm about to completely give up on iCloud, and I suspect that others will too unless this gets fixed.
    Cheers,
    Bob

  • How to CHECK WHETHER LOWER CASE OR UPPER CASE  IN CUSTOM TABLE

    Dear Friends,
I have a requirement where from  the flat file  i have collected into the internal table is as below :
IDNo.     Name     Date      Location   Designation  Dept
101       raja      4/12/2007  Delhi      manager      HR
102       james    4/12/2007  Delhi      clerk          HR
now iam checking against my custom table where iam   if the designation for the employee name already exists then i shouldnt modify/update the custom table that record
now iam facing a problem where is the flat file is always having the Lower Case only ,
as per the scenario  if my custom table already have the employee name i shouldnt modify/update i.e i shouldnt overwrite,
this scenario is working but it is failing in the case
by chance in the Custom table the employee name or designation is in Upper Case  the condition where iam checking in the code  is failing as the flat file data coming into the internal table is having always lower Case.
So could any one please let me know how i should check in my custom table whether iam having upper case or lower case and how can i make it lower case ?
because iam able to manage in the case where if the flat file data coming in Upper case i can check before only by
using Translate to lower case . how i unalbe to  check for the data coming from the Custom table if  in Uppercase , so i want to change that to lower case then checking my condition whether that data already exists in my custom table before modifying the data coming from the flat .
because the condition is failing when the data in the custom table is in upper case and the Flat file data is in lower case.
please help how i can check for the data in the Custom table is in upper case and then change it to lower case.
    Regards
    Madhuri.

    Hi Madhuri,
Translate both data in your flat file & custom table to lowercase before comparing them. With that, you're able to identify if there's a differences in for both data.
If you're putting data that is pulled from custom table, what you can do is after selecting/reading the data, translate to lowercase or uppercase (whichever you prefer) but make sure if you translate to lowercase, your data in the flat file must be lowercase to and vice versa.
    Happy doing !!..
    Regards,
    Loo
