Oracle text search - special characters issue

Hi.
I'm facing a real annoying problem with text search query, and everything I've tried failed...
I have a table with a varchar column indexed by text index. The column contains special characters like '&', ',' and mainly- '-'. Since I want to disregard these special characters for searches I have created a basic lexer of type skipjoins for the column index. So now, the phrase 'aaa-bbb something'. for example, can be searched without '-', like this: 'aaabbb'. But I want to make it possible for this phrase to be searched with and without '-'. So, that when the user enters 'aaabbb' he will get the same results as when he enters 'aaa-bbb'.
In other words, This condition:
WHERE CONTAINS(column, '<query> <textquery grammar="context"> <progression><seq>'
||'aaabbb'
||'</seq></progression> </textquery> </query> ' ,1)> 2
Will return the same results as this condition:
WHERE CONTAINS(r.POI_NAME, '<query> <textquery grammar="context"> <progression><seq>'
||'aaa-bbb'
||'</seq></progression> </textquery> </query> ' ,1)> 2
Since text query treats the '-' sign as a minus sign and searches for 'aaa' which doesn't contain 'bbb', the only way I found to fix this was to wrap the search text with {}. like this:
WHERE CONTAINS(r.POI_NAME, '<query> <textquery grammar="context"> <progression><seq>'
||'{aaa-bbb}'
||'</seq></progression> </textquery> </query> ' ,1)> 2
This all went very well, until I wanted to create a relaxation query. like this:
WHERE CONTAINS(r.POI_NAME, '<query> <textquery grammar="context"> <progression><seq>'
||'{aaab}'
||'</seq><seq>'
||'{aaab}'
||'%</seq></progression> </textquery> </query> ' ,1)> 2
In this case, I would expect the first part of the query to return no results (since it's not the whole word) but the second part, using '%' should have returned the record of 'aaa-bbb'. It doesn't. It will only return my result if I remove the '{}' for the second part. I can't do that, because the exact same search, when containing '-', will not return the expected results when I remove the braces (the sign is treated as minus sign):
WHERE CONTAINS(r.POI_NAME, '<query> <textquery grammar="context"> <progression><seq>'
||'{aaab}'
||'</seq><seq>'
||'aaa-b'
||'%</seq></progression> </textquery> </query> ' ,1)> 2
So I now have no solution. My question is- How can I create a query that will disregard the minus sign and treat it as a regular sign, but would still handle percentage sign as a special sign. So that I could run a query like the last example and will get the results of searching the phrase 'aaa-b%'?
In short, and to simplify my question, I'm looking for a way to escape all characters (not only the minus sign) except for a specific character. Kind of like 'unescaping' a specific character (the '%' sign) within braces {}. Or, another way would be to remove the space that is added to the phrase inside the braces at the end of the word, preventing me from adding "%" at the end of the word, outside the braces.
Thanks you,
Nili

I'm looking for a way to escape all characters (not only the minus sign) except for a specific character. Kind of like 'unescaping' a specific character (the '%' sign) within braces {}What about if you apply a function like regexp_replace to escape all known "specific characters", and then unescape the particular specific character again back as e.g. in
SQL>  select 'a.da-df%df*' str, replace (
                                               regexp_replace (
                                                    'a.da-df%df*',
                                                    '([[:punct:]])',
                                                    '\\\1'
                                               str2
  from dual
STR         STR2
a.da-df%df* a\.da\-df%df\*
1 row selected.i.e. don't escape with curly brackets but with the backslash character.
You can then use this string in your query like in
WHERE CONTAINS(r.POI_NAME, '<query> <textquery grammar="context"> <progression><seq>'
||'aaab'
||'</seq><seq>'
||'aaa\-b'
||'%</seq></progression> </textquery> </query> ' ,1)> 2

  • Equivalence Operator - Oracle Text Search

    Hi,
    I am trying to use Equivalence Operator(=) as following,
    SELECT SCORE (1), CLOB_COL
    FROM TEST_CLOB
    +WHERE CONTAINS (CLOB_COL, '({AIR}={WA@TER})', 1) > 0+
    This seems to work fine for normal words, but when the word has any special characters(WA@TER) the equivalence operator throws the following error.
    ORA-29902: error in executing ODCIIndexStart() routine
    ORA-20000: Oracle Text error:
    DRG-50921: EQUIV operand not a word or another EQUIV expression
    DRG-50921: EQUIV operand not a word or another EQUIV expression
    Please let me know if there is a way to escape the special characters.
    The same query seem to work if i use "OR" operator instead of "Equivalence" but need to know whether it is possible to do it with "Equivalence" operator.
    Thanks.

    Thanks.The second result in a simple google query for "oracle text escape special characters" returned this.

  • Why does text on certain portions of websites, usually when adjacent text contains special characters, become jumbled into seemingly random sets of characters that are not in any way jumbled when viewing the source of the webpage? How can I fix this?

    When viewing most text on most websites, it displays properly. However, there are two instances where text will either tend to, or consistently, become jumbled into a mess of seemingly random characters. Oddly enough, these seemingly random characters are not, in fact, random. The same weird character will be used to replace the same regular English text character consistently across the entire area that has been jumbled.
    The two instances where this tends to occur most often, or consistently in some cases, are, first, when a paragraph or particular section of formatted text contains special characters, such as Chinese or Japanese characters, or accented letters. When this happens, usually the paragraph that contains the special characters is completely jumbled, while the rest of the text on the page will have intermittent jumbling on a word or two. Most often, the word "the" is jumbled in this case.
    The second instance where this happens is when a website uses specially formatted text in some form or another. I, not being an expert at web development, am not sure what kind of formatting causes it, but I can provide consistent examples in lieu of my experience:
    - Example 1:
    [http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/9564/firefoxcharencodingissu.jpg]
    Example 1 shows a portion of a screen-shot of the website "Joystiq.com". Every single article title on the front page of this blog is consistently jumbled, while the text of the article itself remains untouched. Please note that when this jumbled text is highlighted, it is visible un-jumbled in the right-click menu as well as in the source code of the page. Other consistent instances can be found within many search fields on various websites. For instance, the search bar located at the top right of "Kotaku.com" consistently displays jumbled characters both on its default text of "Search" and on any text that is typed into the search box itself.
    - Example 2:
    [http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/9564/firefoxcharencodingissu.jpg]
    Example 2 shows both the jumbling of the paragraph containing the character "☆" as well as the subsequent peppering of the rest of the article's text with small jumbled words. Below this is the DOM Source of the selected text which shows how the text itself is being rendered properly within the site's source. Additionally, for convenience, I have edited on to the bottom of the image a small snippet of what the search bar on the same page looks like. Notice how the grayed-out text that normally would read "Search" is instead jumbled.
    This issue has been plaguing my browser for the past year or so, and I had hoped that it would go away with subsequent Firefox updates. It has not gone away.
    Thank you for reading! Please help!

    This issue can be caused by an old bitmap version of the Helvetica or Geneva font or (bitmap) fonts that Firefox can't display in that size.
    Firefox can't display some old bitmap fonts in a larger size and displays gibberish instead.
    You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.
    Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or see if you can find a True type version that doesn't show the problem.
    There have also been fonts with a Chinese name reported that identify themselves as Helvetica, so check that as well.
    Use this test to see if the Helvetica font is causing it (Copy & Paste the code in the location bar and press Enter):
    <pre><nowiki>data:text/html,
    Helvetica<br><font face="Helvetica" size="25">abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ</font><br>
    Helvetica Neue<br><font face="Helvetica Neue" size="25">abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ</font>
    </nowiki></pre>
    You should reset the network.http prefs that show user set on the about:config page.<br />
    Not all websites support http pipelining and if they do not then you can have issues with images or other problems.

  • How to search special characters in a string

    Hi all,
    I want to search special characters in all string columns and all rows in the table.
    The table has about 5 string columns and about 5.000.000 rows. For each row and column, I have to search entries, which included special characters like ", !, ? or something else (f.ex. "Mama?Mia" or "!!!Hotel out of order!!!"). The problem, the character could stand at each position in the string.
    What's the best and most performance possibility to search such entries?? Is it possibility only by SQL; is there a special function for this?? Or must I use PL/SQL.
    Thanks for helping

  • Text fields special characters problem in forms created with ID

    Hi there,
    I'm creating form document with ID.
    The problem with special characters appears after exporting file to interactive pdf.
    When filling up text field, special characters (polish language specials in my case) are replaced by squares.
    I do not know if this is a ID problem (and I should set encoding during pdf creation somehow) or Acrobat/Reader problem (tried both and also in Polish or English versions).
    Some help would be appreciated.

    I am Creative Cloud User and downloaded fresh ID less than 2 hours ago.. And honestly the last thing I would think about was updating.
    But in fact - it was the problem.
    So thank you very much for help!

  • How to configure what is displayed in srfDocSnippet (Oracle Text Search)?

    I am using UCM 10gR3 with SiteStudio 10gR4. I installed the Oracle Text Search component and it is working well. One of the requirements for a search results page is the specific layout of the data displayed. srfDocSnippet returns a really ugly display if the search result return is just metadata. I didn't find any documentation in UCM on how to configure this display.
    How to you configure what is displayed in srfDocSnippet?

    You might want to look at the Ultra Search extension to Oracle Text.

    usually this sort of thing occurs when the filters that you are using predate the release of acrobat involved. I don't know for sure the dates on your particular versions - and indeed you don't give us the db patch level - but a metalink search should reveal this.

  • Oracle Text Search 9.2.0.7

    Hello,
    I need to enable Oracle Text Search a 9207 database. Is this a feature that I can enable within the currently running 9207. Or do I need to install this feature into the 9207 instance. If installed, which cd is the Text Search on, compainion cd? Thank you in advance.

    Yes, you can enable this feature, the easiest way to do this is using dbca, at the configuration section, you can add this feature if database was manually created.
    If database was cloned from a seed database it already has it installed and configured, you can start using it, as a reference check this: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/text.102/b14217/toc.htm

  • Special Characters issue---u00FA ,u00A3---- in Reciver SOAP Adapter

    Hi ,
    I am facing issues with Spceial Characters ú ,£ at the reciver SOAP adapter  ,the messages was stuk in XI with to the following error :An invalid character was found in text content. Error processing resource
    I tried in several ways buy using XMBWS.XMLEncoding=iso-8859-1,
    but it was not resloved still I am getting the same error,
    Any one plz suggest me how to resolve this issue....
    Regards,
    Teja.

    Hi ,
    My scenario is RFC--SOAP ,the messages was successfully rached to RFC adapter and I am facing the issue at the receiver SOAP Adapter ......
    I am getting error messages such as :
    1) 400 Bad Request
    2) In the XML Payload ......It is showing as Invalid Character found ....
    For this I tried ...
    1) In the source payload XML I done the  chages in the encodding part
    encoding part as iso-8859-1instead of utf-8.
    2) I have triggered the message from Integration Engine ....then it was successfully processed through SOAP Adapter
    3) with special characters...means there is no issue at target end.
    4) the issue lies in XI so we have to resolve it.
    I tried by using Adapter paramters  which was provided by SAP but the result is same..
    so the paramters which was provided by SAP are incorrect(for encoding)
    Please help me in resolving this issue .........
    Regards,
    Teja.

  • Special Characters issue in DEV and QAS

    Hi,
    I am uploading a file that has special characters (Japanese).
    In the DEV system the special character is converted to #. Which the business wants.
    In QAS system the special character is not converted and is as it is, which makes the business users difficult to find out if any speical characters are there and they don't want the special character as it is
    The file consists millions of record with a possibility of four or five records with special characters
    The special characters on keyboards is not an issue.
    The programs in DEV and QAS system are same and the file tested is also the same but different results.
    Tried in Tcode SNLS to find something but didn't know what and where to look into.
    What could be the issue in this? Looks like this is Basis issue but would like to know if anyone can let me know.......
    Regards
    Sandeep

    Hi ,
    i want to check ur open dataset statement in the program which is being used here if at all in ur case.
    Can you please check the relavant code page in both the D and Q systems and search with the appropriate hexa decimal values(for the special characters ) in both the systems ..
    u can use code page by tcode scp ..
    ex -> as u say a special char sp1 is having entry in q and code page which is being used (like 4200 )
    is not having in d03 .
    then if in d03 this page has no entry then it shows as # , since it is showing in q then it has an entry over there. this is my guess..
    so if at all the client wants not to see this special char's , u need to remove them from this code page.. and check ..
    Cant say if this can solve but u can take this as one more way of dealing with code pages  and special chars....
    br vijay..

  • Turkish Special characters issue in ECC 6.0, while uploading into table

    HI All,
    We are working with Turkish special characters in ECC 6.0
    We are uploading a CSV file containing characters like : İ, Ğ, Ş, Ü, Ö, as soon as the file gets uploaded to application server,
    it gets converted to ? or # or Ý.
    Also, we are reading the file using OPEN DATASET, ENCODING NON-UNICODE, IGNORING CONVERSION ERRORS, the same characters gets uploaded into the custom table  i.e. Ý.
    I have also tried saving the file in UNICODE / UTF-8 format, but the issue still remains.
    I tried searching SAP Notes as well.
    Any pointers to resolve the same will be helpful.
    Regards,
    Siddhesh Sanghvi

    Dear Siddhesh,
    Perhaps OSS note 508854 could help here.
    Also please be aware that Turkish only runs on ISO codepage 8859-9 (aka Latin-5 / SAP codepage 1610).
    I hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Ian Kehoe

  • Oracle Text search returning no results

    Hi,
    I have created an oracle text (ctxsys.context) on a BLOB column which has various documents of .doc,.docx,.pdf, types.
    CREATE INDEX IND_RESUME_DETAILS ON RESUME_DETAILS (RESUME)
       INDEXTYPE IS CTXSYS.CONTEXT
    PARAMETERS ('datastore ctxsys.default_datastore filter ctxsys.inso_filter sync (on commit)')
    However, the query using 'Contains' does not return any search results.
    select employee_number,Score(1) from resume_details where CONTAINS(RESUME,'JAVA',1)>0 order by score(1) desc
    On checking the  'ctx_user_index_errors' view , it has an entry for every row in the table. However, it does not show any error in the err_text column
    ERR_INDEX_NAME
    ERR_TIMESTAMP
    ERR_TEXTKEY
    ERR_TEXT
    IND_RESUME_DETAILS
    5/8/2014 18:27
    AAAl0GAAGAAEFoWAAC
    IND_RESUME_DETAILS
    5/8/2014 18:27
    AAAl0GAAGAAEFoWAAD
    IND_RESUME_DETAILS
    5/8/2014 18:27
    AAAl0GAAGAAEFoWAAE
    Even the index status shows 'VALID'.
    I tried dropping and recreating indexes, dropping and recreating the table.. However, it's not working at all.
    What's surprising is,it used to work earlier without any problems.
    I also have another context index on  another column on the same  table which is a varchar2 column. The search on that column works absolutely fine.
    The database version is
    Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.3.0
    Request someone in helping  me root cause this issue. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Barbara,
    Still the same issue.
    Its putting an entry into 'ctx_user_index_errors' but with nothing in the err_text column..Hence, difficult to track what or where the problem lies.
    And moreover, the same index was working earlier. Just stopped working all of a sudden.
