Oracle VM 2.2 :: Oracle Clusterware/Oracle 11gR2 {Single RAC node} Question

1. Is it recommended to use physical disks everywher for ORAHOME, base operating system root, OCR / Vote disks and ASM disks? At this point of time in my vm.cfg only the ASM disks are physical while the OCR / Vote disks and ORAHOME and operating system is on an image file using tap:aio (blktap) driver.
Current vm.cfg disk directive

2. is it recommended to use OCFS2 base partitioned disks be used to create ASM disks. I want to use these disks for ASM. (OR should i destroy the filesystem at the hypervisor and just present raw disk)

Sebastian : Thanks. I did come across this white paper & now I have converted they ASM disks to physical. When you say just direcly pass LUNs from storage, its still going to be a virtual block device off the RAW lun to OVS, is that what you meant? .. ie RAW disk to OVS --> use phy: directive to present and xvd"n" to vm (PV block driver)

Hi,
1.) It is recommended to use physical disks for all ASM disks (also for OCR and Vote). If you use 11.2. then OCR/Vote are on ASM anyway.
See also: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/clustering/oracle-rac-in-oracle-vm-environment-131948.pdf
2.) Just present RAW disks. Best is to directly pass the LUNs provided from the storage.

SebastianAvi : hdparam and dd tests do not say so. I have seen better performances with blktap driver. Even iostat run within ASM showed better response times. I serched on white paper and documents within metalink on blktap or file driver, but couldnt find any. (I did find some ex Oracle SE's journals recommending blktap driver for better performance). Are you referring to significant improvements in 3.0.2 ? because, in 2.2 the file: driver is poor performing.

Also note that you should be using the file: driver with Oracle VM, not tap:aio -- all of the Oracle performance improvements went into the loopback driver that uses the file method.Edited by: Abhijit on Dec 8, 2011 7:14 AM

  • Oracle 11gR2 on Windows 7 Questions

I am thinking about installing Oracle 11g R2 Express Edition on my 64bit Windows 7 laptop. I am wanting to use it to access an Oracle 10g database and develop SSRS 2008 reports against that database.
    Here are my questions...
Will the 11g R2 connect to the 10g database?
Will SQL Developer work with the 11g R2 client while connected to a 10g database?
What SQL Developer version is the best to get for developing SSRS2008 reports on the 10g database in this scenario?
If I do the 11g R2 install and it doesn't work, does it uninstall cleanly? I don't want to have any issues with my laptop after the uninstall.
I would appreciate any advise offered.
    Thanks!

Pl identify which version of Win 7 - you will require Professional or higher - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/install.112/e18803/toc.htm#BABGGAJA - Home version is not supported, although some have tried to install it on Home version and have been successful - that does not mean there will be no issues in using the software.
Pl also identify the exact version of "10g" - where is this datbase located ? You should be able to connect to the 10 database from XE.
What is "SSRS" ? I would suggest the latest version of SQL Developer. Why do you need a 11g XE install in the first place ? You should be able to connect to the 10g database directly using SQL Developer.
De-install instructions are here - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/install.112/e18803/toc.htm#CIHDDHJD - they work as advertised on supported OS versions.

  • Opening OEM for two Oracle 11gR2 Databases in the same web browser automatically log out.

    Hi to everyone,
I have an issue regarding Oracle Enterprise Manager in 11gR2. I have two database (SWPROD, PDPROD) in a single server. When I open the OEM URL for  SWPROD it is successfully logged on but when I open the OEM URL for PDPROD and successfully logged on the other tab for SWPROD will automatically logged out. And when I switch to the other tab for PDPROD it is also automatically logged out. Both OEM URL is open in a single web browser like Mozilla Firefox. What would be the reason why both OEM URL will be logged out when I open them at the same time?
Thank you for your incoming response.

Well it seems the only way to clear these out of EM was to shut BOTH RAC nodes down and power them up one at a time.  Now the updates aren't shown as required and my compliance score is where it should be.
Is this a bug ?  Seems pretty stupid to have to shut down both RAC nodes to fix this.  Powering a single RAC node off and back on did not clear this.
    Unless i'm missing something??

  • Oracle clusterware for 11gR2 ?

We are trying to install 11gR2 for RAC on Linux and have downloaded the Enterprise Edition 11gR2 binary. But cannot see any clusterware software to download. Like in 10gR2, you have to down both database and clusterware for RAC install. Should the 11gR2 have include the clusterware in the DB enterprise edition binary?
    Thanks in advance,

No. The 11gR2's cluster s/w is called Grid Infrastructure and is a separate download. The s/w includes the new CRS s/w stack and ASM - and note that the installation recommendations include installing it as a separate o/s user (with new o/s groups) and not as the traditional oracle o/s user (the user grid is recommended). This way there is better physical separation of the cluster s/w stack from the RBMS s/w stack and makes monitoring and management and administration a lot easier.

  • Ntp Server for Oracle 11gr2 (oracle clusterware) on HP-UX

we are planning to configure a ntp server on Windows 2003 server for our Oracle 11gr2 RAC (2 nodes) on HP-UX but we have some issues to be clear. Following are the details for our environment.
RAC : Oracle Clusterware (2 nodes)
    Database : 11gr2
    OS: HP-UX B11
Hardware: HP Intergrity Blade Servers BL860c i2
    ntp server : HP Proliant
if our ntp server fails how the both nodes will manage the time?

if our ntp server fails how the both nodes will manage the time?Use NTP insure that all cluster nodes must be synchronized to the same time ,in 9i , 10g and 11gR2 Oracle Clusterware includes the Cluster Time Synchronization Service (CTSS) . On startup Clusterware checks for a NTP configuration, if found, CTSS goes into Observer mode. This means it will monitor the clock synchronization and report in the Oracle Clusterware alert log if it finds a problem. If it does not find a NTP configuration, CTSS will be active .

Hello: I had to deinstall a failed oracle 11gR2 rac cuslterware. But, not the asm disks are not in the OUI pick list. How can I resolve that?
The storage is on SAN partitions.

Probably the install already put something on the disks.
    Clean them with dd if=/dev/zero of=<your asm disks> bs=1M count=10

  • Oracle 11gR2 RAC: Running the script root.sh problem

    Folks,
Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2 whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6) in VMPlayer and according to the tutorial
    http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/10/11gr2-rac-on-linux-56-using-vmware.html
I have been installing Grid Infrastructure using runInstaller from step 1 to step 9 of 10 in both VM rac1 and rac2.
Now, I am running the script root.sh in VM rac1 and rac2 as below:
    [root@rac1 /]# /u01/app/grid/root.sh
    Output:
    CRS-4123: ohasd is starting
    FATAL: Module oracleoks not found
    FATAL: Module oracleadvm not found
    FATAL: Module oracleacfs not found
    ACFS-9121: Failed to detect /dev/asm/.asm_ctl_spec
    ACFS-9310: ADVM/ACFS installation failed.
ACFS-9311: not all components were detected after installation
    'UpdateNodeList' was successful.
    [root@rac1 /]#
    [root@rac2 /]# /u01/app/grid/root.sh
    Output:
    CRS-4123: ohasd is starting
    FATAL: Module oracleoks not found
    FATAL: Module oracleadvm not found
    FATAL: Module oracleacfs not found
    ACFS-9121: Failed to detect /dev/asm/.asm_ctl_spec
    ACFS-9310: ADVM/ACFS installation failed.
ACFS-9311: not all components were detected after installation
    Start of resource "ora.asm_init" failed.
    Failed to start ASM.
Failed to start Oracle Clusterware Stack.
    [root@rac2 /]#
As we see the output above, rac1 and rac2 get the same problems. in addition, rac2 fails to start ASM and Clusterware stack. Thus, I have 2 questions:
First, the common problem for rac1 and rac2 :
1)Module "oracleoks, oracleadvm, oracleacfs" not found
    2)/dev/asm/.asm_ctl_spec not detected
    3)ADVM/ACFS installation failed
Do the above 3 factors affect Grid and DataBase Installation later ? If yes, how to solve these problems ?
Second, how to start ASM and Clusterware stack in rac2 ?
    Thanks.

    you have 2 options:
    1. OEL 5.6 comes with 2 kernels, the original Red Hat, and Oracle UEK, you can choose not to use UEK
or the one i would recommend:
    2. Upgrade Grid Infrastructure,
*11.2.0.3.1* (patch 13348650, released about a 1 month ago) supports ACFS on UEK (starting with 2.6.32.200 IIRC)

  • Service relocation automatic script required in oracle 11gr2 in perl or she

    Hi Everyone
I require script to relocate service automatically in oracle 11gr2 to the prefered node if nodes goes down
it can be either shell script or perl script?
    thanks
    Nitin

    Hi,
1.) No if you define a service with TAF, then the TAF information will be provided to the client, without having to specify it again in the TNSNAMES.ora (neither client nor server).
However it does not hurt, if you have specified it additionally (it just makes it more difficult if you want to change something, because the client side does not get updated).
See this whitepaper for more information:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/clustering/overview/awm11gr2-130711.pdf
2.) However it seems you have forgotten to specify something with the service (you seem to be missing -m):
    srvctl add service -h
Adds a service configuration to the Oracle Clusterware.
    -P {NONE | BASIC | PRECONNECT} TAF policy specification
-e <Failover type> Failover type (NONE, SESSION, or SELECT)
-m <Failover method> Failover method (NONE or BASIC)
    -w <integer> Failover delay
    -z <integer> Failover retries

  • Oracle 11gR2 RAC on Linux 5

    Hi,
I am trying to setup Oracle 11gR2 RAC on Linux 5.4 64-bit machine. I have used OCFS2 for creating shared disks. Encountered with the following error message while installing "Grid Infrastructure".
[INS-30014] Unable to check wether the location specified is on CFS
[INS-40103] The installer has detected that the software location specified is on an OCFS2 partition.

[INS-41514] One or more locations specified for placing voting disks cannot be used.
-- At the time of configuration i have created 2 share disks, 1) For Oracle software 2) For voting disk and OCR
Provided the same details at time of Clusterware installation.
    Please hel me.
    Thanks,

Actually for both Oracle software and OCR i have used OCFS2. bcz earlier in Oracle 11g1 RAC i did the same and able to do smooth installation Well, you can no more do that with 11gR2 and it's clearly mentioned in 11gR2 Error messages documentation that configuration of grid Infrastructure software for a cluster is not supported on OCFS2 partition. You'll need to specify a location that is not an OCFS2 partition.
Search for the error INS-40103 message at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10880/giinstaller_errormessages.htm

  • Oracle 11gR2 RAC Scan Virtual IPs

Hi, I have a doubt, I was installing Oracle RAC 11gR2 but I didn't understand how to do to resolve rac node ip address if the scan host has virtual ip and supposedly that ip address is not associated with specific host, when I attempt to ping to scan host why get response from rac nodes?
    Thanks.

"..how to do to resolve rac node ip address if the scan host has virtual ip.."
use DNS to round robin the 3+ IP's.
"..and supposedly that ip address is not associated with specific host, when I attempt to ping to scan host why get response from rac nodes?"
it -is- associated with a specific host. but you did not assign that IP from the OS level, Oracle clusterware does that for you, dynamically.
In a two node RAC you will (assuming the recommended setup) have 3 SCAN listeners, so 2 on one node, and 1 on the other. If you stop the node with the 2 SCAN listeners, clusterware will reassign the corresponing IP's to the remaining node, and start the listeners there.
which you can obviously verify with ipconfig or netstat, or the /sys pseudo fs on Linux.

How many PC's and OS's do you have ;-) Installation of oracle 11gR2 in fedora 16
Supported OS versions are listed in the Install Doc - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e24321/pre_install.htm#CIHFICFD
If you insist on using an unsupported OS, you are on your own.
