Out of Memory in Upgrade 8.1 SP5 application to WLW 10.3

In WLW 10.3 on Windows, it uses JRockit to startup by default. As there are many parameters specific to JRockit, i just enlarge the -Xms and -Xmx for the upgrade process. It is JRockit 1.60_05
Unluckily, i encountered Java Out of Memory issue all the time. By investigating on the GC log, it throws Java OOM after the Full GC. It seems the OOM was caused by memory fragmentation that JRockit cannot compact the free heap for use.
[INFO ][memory ] 4575.398-4577.887: GC 1310720K->697883K (1310720K), 2488.303 ms

1. Please help to provide a way to force JRockit to compact free heap
2. Please help to provide a way to change JRockit to another JVM e.g. SUN's JVM to start up WLW 10.3
Any suggestion?

For problem 1 - I have used -XXcompactRatio to force the compaction ratio to solve it. However, it results in a very slow manner.
Unfortunately, it still returns Java OOM even i have set -Xmx1536m.
1. Can we change the JVM for Workshop 10.3 and how?
2. Is there any experts to tell me how large memory will be needed for Upgrade?
3. Can i break the migration of an application into several phases so that i can do and commit them one by one?
Any advice?

I'm using a 2GB MBA (2010 version). After upgrading to Mavericks, I have very little ram left (<50MB). I can't run anything. Even the Internet is breaking up. Safari won't load anything. I get to some webpages using Chrome if I'm lucky... is it normal?

Do a backup. Then try running the combo update.

  • Cannot Upload Resources to P6 v7 - System out of Memory

    Hello,
When I import resource assignments to P6 v7, I get an the following error message:
"Your system is out of memory. Please close other running applications and try this operation again."
I also noticed that the PM.exe file in Task Manager was consuming a huge amount of system memory, over 1 GB.
After this error message, when I go back to my P6 schedule, I find that several activity durations have been zeroed out. I've never experienced this with earlier versions of P6. Has anyone encountered any of this before?
Here's some more info about the schedule - It has 8600 activities, and 7000+ resource assignments.
    Thanks for your help!

    Jason,
Thanks for your reply. I would have thought that 2GB of memory would me more than sufficient. Would increasing the memory to say 3GB or 4GB help? Incidentally, I did break down the spreadsheet into 7 "chunks" of about 1000 entries, and was able to successfully import the spreadsheet that way.
Also what do you mean by API?
Thanks again! It certainly won't hurt, but I doubt that 3/4gb even is going to allow you to import that many assignments in one shot with the method you are using; since P6 is a 32bit application, it cannot address that much memory.
The api is the programmers interface. It would require knowledge of Java programming, however, if you are going to be doing this sort of thing a lot, it would pay for itself many times over in speed, ease of use, and avoiding any potential issues.

    Lynda-
If you still have the old computer, you should be able to connect the iPad, run iTunes and restore from a backup from a previous sync.  Now that you have it updated, you will not need to do that again.

  • Out of Memory error after upgrading to Reader X

We have several PDF documents that work fine on Reader 9.  But after upgrading to Reader X, the files will not open.  Instead, they report an Out Of Memory error and a blank document opens instead.  Removing Reader X and re-installing Reader 9 corrects the issue. This has been reproduced on 3 different PCs running both Windows XP and Windows 7.
    Any suggestions?

Just to throw in my 2 cents... Adobe has known about the out of memory bug at least since 01/12/2011 because that is when I reported the problem to them.  I even had an escalated support case #181995624 and bug#2800823.  Our problem comes from a EFI Fiery E7000 attached to our Lanier LD460c Copier.  Any pdf's made from that copier will not open in Acrobat X, although they will open in lower versions of Acrobat just fine.  Our only workaround is to keep Acrrobat 9 on office computers, or you can open the offending pdf in Acrobat 9 or earlier and print it to pdf, and then it will open in Acrobat X!!!  They acknowledged that this was a bug, see my email chain below.  This was the last update I received from Adobe, very frustrating...

The EFI Fiery E-7000 Controller version is 1.2.0 and it handles the scanning and printing functionality of our Lanier LD160c copier.  I have attached two sample files.  One is a 1 page scan from our copier.  The other is a combined pdf that I just created in Acrobat 9.  The first two pages of the combined pdf consists of a webpage that I printed using Acrobat 9 and then the scan from the copier is on the 3rd page.  In Acrobat X, once you get to the 3rd page you will receive the Out of Memory error.  It will open in previous versions of Acrobat just fine though.

It is a walk up copier and we scan to email.  The EFI Fiery controller E7000 handles pdf conversion for the copier, but yes it has the latest firmware.  The bottom line is that we have 3 or 4 years worth of pdfs created from that copier rendered useless by Acrobat X.  They open fine in previous versions of Acrobat.  Did you get the test pdf file when this case was created?

  • WLS 8.1 SP6 out of memory problem

Hi, I just upgraded the weblogic server 8.1 from SP5 to SP6. After the upgrade, 2 applications keep getting out of memory error. I turned on the -verbosegc to see the heap used and it seems that the application seems to be taking up more heap space in SP6 than SP5. And the heap size keep increasing a lot over time when the application is in idle (meaning no access to the application) for SP6. Below are the GC output that I captured for SP5 and SP6. Anyone encounter the same problem or is able to shed some light on my problem?

  • Acrobat XI Pro "Out of Memory" error after Office 2010 install

    Good Afternoon,
We recently pushed Office 2010 to our users and are now getting reports of previous installs of Adobe Acrobat XI Pro no longer working but throwing "Out of Memory" errors.
We are in a Windows XP environment. All machines are HP 8440p/6930p/6910 with the same Service pack level (3) and all up to date on security patches.
All machines are running Office 2010 SP1.
All machines have 2GB or 4GB of RAM (Only 3.25GB recognized as we are a 32bit OS environment).
All machines have adequate free space (ranging from 50gb to 200gb of free space).
All machines are set to 4096mb initial page file size with 8192mb maximum page file size.
All machines with Acrobat XI Pro *DO NOT* have Reader XI installed alongside. If Reader is installed, it is Reader 10.1 or higher.
The following troubleshooting steps have been taken:
    Verify page file size (4096mb - 8192mb).
Deleted local user and Windows temp files (%temp% and c:\WINDOWS\Temp both emptied).
Repair on Adobe Acrobat XI Pro install. No change.
Uninstall Acrobat Pro XI, reboot, re-install. No change.
Uninstall Acrobat Pro XI Pro along with *ALL* other Adobe applications presently installed (Flash Player, Air), delete all Adobe folders and files found in a full search of the C drive, delete all orphaned Registry entries for all Adobe products, re-empty all temp folders, reboot.
Re-install Adobe Acrobat XI Pro. No change.
Disable enhanced security in Acrobat XI Pro. No change.
    Renamed Acrobat XI's plug_ins folder to plug_ins.old.
You *can* get Acrobat to open once this is done but when you attempt to edit a file or enter data into a form, you get the message, "The "Updater" plug-in has been removed. Please re-install Acrobat to continue viewing the current file."
A repair on the Office 2010 install and re-installing Office 2010 also had no effect.
At this point, short of re-imaging the machines (which is *not* an option), we are stumped.
We have not yet tried rolling back a user to Office 2007 as the upgrade initiative is enterprise-wide and rolling back would not be considered a solution.
Anyone have any ideas beyond what has been tried so far?

As mentioned, the TEMP folder is typically the problem. MS limits the size of this folder and you have 2 choices: 1. empty it or 2. increase the size limit. I am not positive this is the issue, but it does crop up at times. It does not matter how big your harddrive is, it is a matter of the amount of space that MS has allocated for virtual memory. I am surprised that there is an issue with 64GB of RAM, but MS is real good at letting you know you can't have it all for use because you might want to open up something else. That is why a lot of big packages turn off some of the limits of Windows or use Linux.

  • IMac CPU3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB, Extremely slow and repeatedly "out of Memory" since migration from Mountain Lion to Mavericks

    Dear Apple Support Community.
As mentioned by a number of users reporting the same problem, my 2009 iMac CPU3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, has become extremely slow and repeatedly "out of Memory" since it was migrated from Mountain Lion to Mavericks (OS 10.9 then OS 10.9.1).
I have already run CleanMyMac, deleted 5GB of useless stuffs, which did not translate into any improvement. Following the advices collected in other Apple Support Community threads, I have applied EtreCheck the outcome of which is provided below.
For information, I have also upgraded my 2011 MacBook CPU2.3 GHz Core i7, 8GB which became only a bit slower than before, sometimes freezing which it almost never did before. However, I am used to the fact that Mac get usually slower and more prompt fo freeze after upgrading to a more recent OS.
Both my 2009 iMac and my 2011 MacBook have F-Secure installed. So the problem with the 2009 IMac is unlikly to be due to the presence of F-Secure. Interestingly, the few abnormalities found by Etrecheck were exacly identical before I ran CleanMyMac. There are two more findings (mentioned below) since I ran CleanMyMac on the 2009 iMac, which again didn't improve the problem.

    1.21 GB          Wired RAM
    1.83 GB          Page-ins
    36 MB          Page-outs
Please find now some additional measurements collected with iStat while running EtreCheck:
    Practically:
The iMac can work slowly with only one software e.g. either Mail or Safari or Firefox, but still the below "out of Memory" message occurs about every 3 minutes.
Aperture has becomre to slow to be useable
If trying to write a mail (with Mail) while Safari or Firefox is open, then the "out of Memory" message occurs about every 20 seconds so I need to check on "Resume" several times per minute.
    Conclusions
From the above, unless anyone in the Apple Support Community proves to be able to identify a specific problem leading to a way to find a cure, I tend to conclude that Mavericks is not suitable for computers operating with a Core 2 Duo CPU even with a 8GB of RAM.
Unless I missed something, I did not see any warning from Apple Computer Inc. informing their customers they should refrain from upgrading Core 2 Duo Computers.
The only solution I see so far is to downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion. And the Apple Support Community would confirm that it is the only solution, I would appreciate to get your guidance on how to proceed.
    Intended action plan
Migrate the above 2009 iMac to a 2014 Mac Mini Server operating on Mavericks to ensure that no data may be lost while downgrading to Montain Lion.
Provided the above downgrading operation is successful, assign this 2009 iMac to partial retirement e.g. Mail, Skype, iTunes  and DVD player.
In advance, I would like to thank the Apple Community for helping me either i) finding a cure to the problem, ii) or confirming that Mavericks cannot operate properly on Core 2 Duo computers, iii) and in such a case, guiding me on how to downgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Yours sincerely
    Core

... what anti-virus would you recommend using?
Use what is already included with OS X. It already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • How can I avoid running out of memory when creating components dynamically

    Hello everyone,
Recently, I am planning to design a web application. It will be used by all middle school teachers in a region to make examination papers and it must contain the following main functions.
1)Generate test questions dynamically. For instance, a teacher who logs on the web application will only see a select one menu and a Next Quiz button. The former is used for determining the number of options for the current multiple/single choice question. The later is dedicated to creating appropriate input text elements according to the selected option number. That is to say, if the teacher selects 4 in the menu and presses the Next Quiz button, 5 input text form elements will appear. The first one is for the question to be asked such as "1.What is the biggest planet in the solar system?", the others are optional answers like a)Uranus. b) Saturn. c)Jupiter. d)Earch. Each answer stands for an input text elements. When the teacher fills in the fourth answer, another select one menu and Next Quiz button will emerge on the fly just under this answer, allowing the teacher to make the second question. The same thing repeats for the following questions.
2)Undo and Redo. Whenever a teacher wants to roll back or redo what he has done, just press the Undo or[i] Redo button. In the previous example, if the teacher selects the third answer and presses the Delete button to drop this answer, it will delete both the literal string content[i] and the input text element, changing the answer d to c automatically. After that, he decides to get back the original answer c, Jupiter, he can just click the Undo button as if he hadnft made the deleting operation.
3)Save the unfinished working in the client side. If a teacher has done half of his work, he can choose to press the Save button to store what he has done in his computer. The reason for doing so is simply to alleviate the burden of the server. Although all finished test papers must be saved in a database on the server, sometimes the unfinished papers could be dropped forever or could form the ultimate testing papers after several months. So if these papers keep in the server, it will waste the server computerfs room. Next time the teacher can press the Restore button on the page to get the previously stored part of the test paper from his own computer and continue to finish the whole paper.
4)Allow at least 1,000 teachers to make test papers at the same time. The maximum question number per examination paper is 60.
Here are my two rough solutions,
    A.Using JSF.
B.Using JavaScript and plain JSP[b] without JSF.
The comparison of the two solutions:
1)Both schemas can implement the first and the second requirements. In JSF page I could add a standard panelGird tag and use its binding attribute. In the backing bean, the method specified by the binding attribute is responsible for generating HtmlInput objects and adding them to the HtmlPanelGird object on the fly. Every HtmlInput object is corresponding to a question subject or an optional answer. The method is called by an actionListener, which is registered in the Next Quiz commandButton, triggering by the clicking on this button in the client side. Using JSF can also be prone to managing the HtmlInput objects, e.g. panelGird.getChildren().add(HtmlInput) and panelGird.getChildren().remove(HtmlInput) respond to the undoing operation of deleting an optional answer and the redoing operation of the deleting action respectively. I know JavaScript can also achieve these goals. It could be more complex since I donft know well about JavaScript.
2)I can not find a way to meet the third demand right now. I am eager to know your suggestion.
3)Using JSF, I think, canft allow 1,000 teachers to do their own papers at the same time. Because in this scenario, suppose each questionnaire having 60 questions and 4 answers per question, there will be approximately 300,000 HtmlInput objects (1,000X60X(4+1)) creating on the server side. The server must run out of memory undoubtedly. To make things better, we can use a custom component which can be rendered as a whole question including its all optional answers. That is to say, a new custom component on the server side stands for a whole question on the client side. Even so, about 60,000(1,000X60) this type of custom components will be created progressively and dynamically, plus other UISelectOne and UICommand objects, it also canft afford for most servers. Do I have to use JavaScript to avoid occupying the server's memory in this way? If so, I have to go back and use JavaScript and plain JSP without JSF.
    Thank you in advance!

Thank you for your quick response, BalusC. I really appreciate your answer.
Yes, you are right. If I manually code the same amount of those components in the JSF pages instead of generating them dynamically, the server will still run out of memory. That is to say, JSF pages might not accommodate a great deal of concurrent visiting. If I upgrade the server to just allow 1,000 teachers making their own test papers at the same time, but when over 2,000 students take the same questionnaire simultaneously, the server will need another upgrading. So I have to do what you have told me, using JS+DOM instead of upgrading the server endlessly.

I installed NW04s in my machine. I am trying to upgrade it to sp5. I could upgrade the ABAP stack to sp5 without any problem. Symptom
JSPM hangs by upgrade from SP4 to SP5 with the following message into the log file:
ERROR: Not updated. Deploy Service returned ERROR: java.rmi.RemoteException: Exception in operation
    update with application sap.com/caf~tc..
Reason: com/sap/caf/rt/exception/CAFDeleteException; nested exception is: ,,java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
JUP fails by NW04 SP14 -> NW04s SP5 upgrade with the message into log file:
ERROR: Not updated. Deploy Service returned ERROR: java.rmi.RemoteException: Exception in operation
    update with application sap.com/caf~tc..
Reason: com/sap/caf/rt/exception/CAFDeleteException; nested exception is: ,,java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
    Reason and Prerequisites
Deployment of CAF component sap.com/caf~tc failed by deployment scenario of type:
    1. The application is deployed with a reference to Lib1, where Class A
    is included.
    2. Then class A is moved from Lib1 to Lib2 (removed from Lib1);
    3. Then the new version of the application which has references to both
    libraries Lib1 and Lib2 is deployed via SDM;
    4. The deployment fails with NoClassDefFoundError: class A.
For patricular case we have the situation:
The class com/sap/caf/rt/exception/CAFDeleteException was moved from
caf/runtime/ear to caf/runtime/api/lib between the SPs.
    Solution
    Please follow the steps:
    1. Close JSPM application
    2. Start <device>:\usr\sap\<sid>\JC<instance number>\SDM\program\RemoteGui.bat
    3. From the menu invoke "SDM Gui" -> "Login" and enter your SDM password
    4. Navigate to tab "Undeployment" and select CAF component caf~tc, press button "Select" and "Start Undeployment" and complete undeployment confirming it.
    5. Navigate to tab "Deployment" and select CAF component using plus button and select option "Update deployed SDA/SCAs that have any version" into Deployment configuration options below and complete deployment confirming it.
    6. Close "SDM Gui" application.
    7. Restart JSPM and on the step "Select package type" select option "Single support packages" in order to update all other components, which left not deployed.
    8. On step "Specify Queue" select all not deployed components and complete their deployment.
    An alternative way is:
    1. If there is a problem with CAF deployment do not stop the upgrade application.
    2. Open command prompt and go to SDM\program directory
    3. Execute: sdm jstartup "mode=integrated"
    4. Execute: startserver
    5. After that start the SDM remote GUI application
    6. From the menu invoke "SDM Gui" -> "Login" and enter your SDM password
    7. Navigate to tab "Undeployment" and select CAF component caf~tc, press button "Select" and "Start Undeployment" and complete undeployment confirming it.
    8. Logout and close "SDM Gui" application.
    9. In the command prompt execute: stopserver
    10. In the command prompt execute: sdm jstartup "mode=standalone"
    11. Go to the Upgrade application and restart the process from the point of failure
    Best Regards,
    Barry.

  • InDesign 2.0.2 & Out of Memory

I just want to state first I have searched everywhere and for every phrase I can think of, and while I have found a couple hits as to the cause, nothing has fixed this issue...
    Background:
I work for a rather large media company who owns a mixture of online and print publications. We have been using InDesign 2.0.2 since it's release, and I have been one of the main persons responsible for it's usage in our workflow for the past 4 years. There have been a number of informal discussions, and even a formal discussion or two, about migrating the templates we use to InDesign CS3 which we also have licenses and installs for. However, that migration project keeps getting pushed aside for more important projects. So please keep in mind that upgrading, for us, is not an option in order to resolve this issue at this time.
A Quick Overview of What We Do:
There are two main products that we offer our child companies - One product for the companies themselves to list vehicles for their clients (in this product their clients are car dealerships), and another product for a private party (e.g., Joe Blow internet user) to list their cars for sell. Both applications run a fairly similar process in that they hand off data gathered from the websites to a custom built application. That application can be considered a parent application, and it then distributes work to its children processes which run on several different servers. Four of those servers run our InDesign processes.
Two of our InDesign machines are physical dedicated servers with a quad core CPU, and 2GB of RAM with 2GB swap. The other two InDesign machines are runnning as VMWare virtual machines with 2 CPU cores and 2GB of RAM with 2GB swap. All four machines are Windows Server 2003, and all files (artwork, XML files) in which these machines use to build the final output file are remotely connected via a file server.
In the past we've seen the issue I am about to describe on our virtual machines only, and on only one machine at a time. Each time we have corrected the issue by simply re-deploying that virtual machine and the InDesign application. However, now it's spread over to our physical boxes too, and currently happening on all four machines at this point in time.
The Problem and What We Have Tried:
As stated earlier, we run a parent/child setup on various servers where the parent hands off work to it's children processes whom are connected in a client/server model via a TCP connection. These children perform a single function - to process data dumped from the websites ultimately into an XML format readable by InDesign. There are other steps and XML outputs, but this is the only one that matters for this discussion.
This child then reports back to the parent that it has completed its work, and the parent will pass that work off to one of our InDesign servers. The child will then automatically launch InDesign, and InDesign will open the files it needs in order to populate various elements in the INDT file. This consists of EPS/PDF/JPEG images for Headers, Footers, Vehicle Images, etc. and also populates certain strings in the document to those read from the XML document to automate the population of the data. Basically we feed it some image files, an INDT, and an XML, and it gives us back a pretty PDF.
The problem that we're seeing is that upon opening some of our INDT files on these machines, InDesign will immediately pop up an error dialog stating that it's out of memory. Obviously, when looking at Task Manager we can see that memory is not an issue. InDesign will be using around 70mb of RAM, and the system will show 1.7GB free physical RAM.
Another problem is that it will go weeks, months, even maybe a year before happening again after re-building the machine its happening on. We have never been able to locate a root cause as to why this keeps happening. However, we have narrowed down that changes to the servers are not occurring at the time these issues start so we have ruled out configuration changes, system patches, etc.
One of the issues with the virtual machines that has seemed to have caused this, and was believed to be the issue until recently, was that the paging file would become corrupt. Thus rebuilding the VM was the only way to resolve. However, we have checked and double checked and the paging files on these servers are currently ok.
Obviously with such an old version of InDesign you can imagine that searching Google is quite difficult. Google likes to think we're asking about CS2, however, there have been a couple hits on 2.0.2.
These hits include information such as possible font corruption and deleting saved settings/defaults files. We have downloaded and used Microsoft's font validator on the fonts, and each have passed. We have also tried deleting the saved settings and defaults files numerious times, as well as deleting the font cache files so that InDesign will re-create them.
The paging files were also re-sized, turned off, moved to another local disk, etc. without any impact.
As this is the first time we've seen this impact multiple machines at the same time, and especially since its happening on both physical machines and virtual machines, we are trying to think of things which are common to these 4 servers. However, the only thing they really share are the mounted network shares. To get around this we've also tried opening our INDT's locally after copying them off the network, but the issue remains the same.
Another thing I've read is that the INDT itself may be corrupted, and to simply re-save the file. As I have a copy of InDesign locally to build these INDT's, this is also something I've tried but with no luck. The files don't seem to be corrupted. The same file which causes InDesign to crash on these four servers load perfectly fine on my local machine.
As we have escalated this to other key people here, our last suggestion was to either re-build the machines or contact Adobe for support. However, InDesign 2.0.2 is no longer a supported product due to its age so I am here - asking you, the community, for any assistance you can provide short of re-deploying these machines.
We would appreciate any assistance you can provide, and thank you for reading this.

    Peter,
Thank you for the reply. In regards to...
"First, are you running InDesign Server, or trying to use a standalone ID
install as a server which is totally unsupported and probably not
allowed under the EULA? Nor is Windows Server a supported OS for
non-server versions of ID, so you're pretty much on your own as far as
what will work and what won't."
InDesign is setup, and launched, like any normal application on any other OS. We have a special user setup which runs the client process of our client/server model in the foreground, and it is that client process that then launches InDesign. This user is always logged in as a result.
"If, in fact, your templates are corrupt, in version 2.0.2 you're SOL as
far as being able to clean them up. Rebuild from scratch. The .inx
format was not introduced until version 3, and were you working in CS3
you could try Remove minor corruption by exporting but there would still be no guarantee of success."
This was one of the things I was trying to remember as I was typing. The .inx export, then re-saving as an .indt. However, as I build these templates locally, I have tried opening the file and re-saving it under a different file name. I then upload that new file and re-name back to the original name, although again, with no luck. I figure if the template is indeed corrupted that it's possible I'm just re-saving those issues even to a new file.
Re-Building from scratch is possible, however, this has happened with brand new templates as well. Again, this issue when it appears seems completely random. It chooses both new and old files alike, and those files appear to be just fine. It's just this time, for some reason, all four machines are doing it which has never happened before. Right now there are probably a few hundred templates which currently throw this error immediately upon loading (and all of the ones I've tried on my local desktop work just fine), and around the same amount that are exhibiting odd behavior with their output.
"Now on to the problem and solutions. You've already rejected the best
idea, which is to upgrade. The out of memory error might be file
corruption, or it might be realted to the use of .eps files which are
notorious for that sort of error. Reasaving in native formats is the
    usual solution."
This is actually something I hadn't thought of or tried. I will re-save the EPS files as PDF's and give it ago with one, however, there are a couple things with that as well. One is that the Out of Memory error pops up on these machines as soon as I open the blank template. There are no graphics imported by default. So really it's just a plain document of whatever size, with a few boxes and text labels. Also, because we work in print and the fact these two applications have been used for so long, most of the artwork our child companies have provided us over the years are in this EPS format. There are a few thousand of them, and converting them all will take more time than it's worth for my company. They would not approve of my dedicating time to do that. New artwork we receive has been mostly in PDF as of late which does help in that regard, however.

  • Out of memory with no swap causes disk activity

Can someone explain what exactly is being read/written from/to disk in this situation?
I have 2 GB of RAM and no swap partitions. Occasionally I'll forget how inefficient gwenview is at displaying very large images and accidentally double-click one. The entire system freezes; even alt+sysrq keystrokes are ineffective (and yes I do have them enabled).
For about 5 minutes, the system is locked up and the hard drive light is flickering. That scares me a bit, because with no swap, what could it possibly be doing for 5 straight minutes? I used to think it was synching before doing the OOM-killing, but there's no way a sync could take that long. Judging from the sound of the hard drive, it's hda (the drive / and all the other system partitions are on).
A few times after recovering from this I've run extensive data verification and never found any evidence of corruption, but I'd like to know for sure that the kernel isn't randomly deciding to use some filesystem as swap space.
In the mean time, I'm playing with disabling overcommit -- setting vm.overcommit_memory = 2 in /etc/sysctl.conf. That enforces a hard memory commit limit of swap size + overcommit_ratio * ram size (so I've read) -- and I've also read that the default overcommit_ratio is only 50%. What the bloody hell? It's almost like someone thinks swap is more important than RAM -- hell-llo, I have 2 GB of RAM so that I can get *away* from swap!
Anyway, I've set the ratio to 97% and so far things seem happy -- if I deliberately run out of memory, the process that did it always gets killed instantly and the system doesn't freeze up on OOM anymore."
Another thing -- in all my out of memory situations so far, VMWare has been running. I suppose it's possible that VMWare is the one doing the swappage; I'll have to investigate that further.
    ~Felix.

I think I've finally figured this out. It's a kernel bug -- I'm guessing that under normal circumstances, the "cached" column in the free command "doesn't count" towards how much memory the system thinks it's using. After all, it's just cached copies of stuff that should be elsewhere, and if you run out of memory, you can safely dump that, right? Unfortunately, /dev/shm is counted under cached rather than used memory (as I discovered in an earlier post).
So if I've got 500 MB of stuff in /dev/shm * (which is where I mount my /tmp), there's now 500MB of stuff in the "cached" column that really does count -- system reaches all RAM full, decides it needs to dump cache, and suddenly finds that the 500MB it thought it could use isn't usable. For some reason it takes about 5 minutes of hard drive thrashing (probably because it's already chucked all of the system libraries, etc. out of cached and needs to re-read them from disk every time) before something finally figures out that it really is out of memory and that that 500MB isn't letting go and invokes OOM-killer.
*: VMWare does this; it creates a 512MB file (the amount of RAM in my virtual machine) then hides it by keeping the file open and deleting it, so the inode's still there, but you can't see it and it makes the df command really perplexing... but that's another story.
I haven't had a chance to try this with a newer kernel (maybe they've fixed it now?); I'm still running 2.6.23-ARCH here. (pacman -Syu upgrades are a major production for me because I have lots of RAID arrays and things, and an nvidia graphics card, and I use gnucash which sometimes needs manual recompiling, and so on...)

  • Photoshop CS6 has out of memory errors under Mac OS X 10.7.4

Has anyone who has a 2008 MacBoo Pro with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512 MB graphics card tried running Photoshop CS6 under Mac OS X 10.7.4?
On my MacBook Pro, PS CS6 launches; however, any action results in an out of memory error.  The CS6 versions of After Effects, Premiere Pro and Illustrator all launch and run as expected under 10.7.4.
If I switch to my Mac OS X 10.6.8 startup volume, Photoshop CS6 runs as expected.
I have support cases open with Adobe, NVidia and Apple.  Adobe thinks I need to update the display drivers.  NVidia says display drivers must be provided by Apple.  Apple says that the display drivers are current.  The Apple support agent said that he can escalate the case if the issue can be reproduced on more than one computer.
I'd love to keep my MacBook Pro running another year or so without having to reboot in 10.6.8 every time I need to use Photoshop.  I'd stay with 10.6.8, but of course iCloud requires 10.7.4.
I have not tried 10.8 yet, but it's on my troubleshooting list.
Also, PS CS6 runs fine under Mac OS X 10.7.4 on my 2010 iMac.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

It looks like it was indeed the display driver for the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT 512 MB graphics card inside my 2008 MacBook Pro.
It seems that this driver only gets installed if you upgrade from Mac OS X 10.6.7 to 10.7.4 while the startup drive is connected to the MacBook Pro itself.  I had updated while the startup drive was connected to my 2010 iMac. Accordingly, I could have reinstalled Photoshop 100 times without it ever launching as expected.  Having used the external startup drive with three other Apple computers (all 2010 or newer machines) with Photoshop CS6 launching as expected, I had just assumed (mistakenly) that it would work as expected with my 2008 computer.
So, this was simple enough to resolve by upgrading the OS on the external startup drive while having it connected to the MacBook Pro.   In hindsight, this makes perfect sense.

  • Excel 2011 version 14.4.8 running on an iMac gets "out of memory" messages.

HELP!!!   Excel 2011 running on an iMac with OS 10.10.2 and 16GB Ram gets "out of memory" messages.  When I monitor processes with "Activity Monitor", I am using less than half of my RAM.  The Excel workbook has many sheets and also some macros.  The basic workbook has been running for about two and half years starting in August 2012 without any problems until I upgraded to Yosemite in early December 2014.  Now I often have to restore the entire file content because it gets corrupted after not being able to save the file because of the "out of memory" message.  I can take a file and its content that ran fine a year ago and run it today and it will eventually get corrupted and get the "Out of memory" message after saving/quitting/re-opening the file any where from 6 to 15 to 25 times.  I think I need to have more memory allocated to Excel, but Yosemite doesn't provide any way for the user to interact with the memory management process.  I have also experienced the very same problem on my MacBook Pro that runs Yosemite.  I have worked file/path name length issues, closely inspected the macros that normally don't run except when activated with a user pressed button, and made sure I don't have any weird links within the workbook or even links to another file outside the workbook.  This problem seems to get worse as a continue to fill up the spread sheet with more financial data.  This Excel workbook is used to manage my club's finances; I am the club treasurer.  I have searched the internet for clues about similar problems and have found none!
My iMac is a 27-inch, Late 2009 with a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 Processor.  It includes 16GB of 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM.  The hard drive is a fussed 1TB rotating HD with 128 GB SSD.  This hardware has been running for about 27 months.  I am a very advanced Mac user that programs Excel and Filemaker and repairs Macs for others.

Given the caveat, have you tried reinstall of Office? Your MS Office 2011 may have become corrupted.  After upgrading to Yosemite I had to reinstall my Office 2011.  No crashes.
The current version of Office 2011 is 14.4.8.
First - find your Office 2011 install disc with the product key # - and only then remove Office according to MS instructions
