• Outage in Tampa???

I currently live in South Tampa and for the past 24 hours my my FIOS internet and Digital Voice have been going up and down. This is tough as a student, are there any updates as to why this is happening? Yesterday I called and the message said it was a known issue and was being worked on but this morning I called and was on hold for 20+ minutes and got no answer or message. Anyone else having issues?

• Slow in Tampa Bay FL?

Is anyone else in N Tampa Bay FL having FiOS Speed issues right now?  I have 75/35 and its been great up until a couple of hours ago.  Now it's
... and that aint right.  I've done all I could (reboot the router, & everything on my network)  I dread getting on the phone with the drones.
And what the heck good is that VZ in home agent?  That thing is more than worthless.  I expected it to actually run some tests, maybe tell me there was a known outage.  Instead it just says 'You be connected', and when I tell it the connection is slow, it tells me other crud that is non applicable.  I quickly uninstalled that thing.

Run WinMTR and see if it is able to pick up say, a bad link that is occurring to a site you're seeing slow speeds to: http://winmtr.net/
If you could, paste the results you get to your post.

• 4G data down in Tampa?

I recently returned from a trip to Baltimore where I picked up 4G signal. Upon arriving back into Tampa late Sunday evening, I was able to briefly pick up 4G service, but ALL day today (Monday, July 30th) and now into Tuesday morning (I work graveyard), I have been on 3G and it seems that it is not sending any email or other data through. This is rather frustrating when you have your work email tied to your device.
Does anyone know if there is an outage in the Tampa area? The best part about this is, I live, and work, within 5 minutes from the Tampa office on Hillsborough Ave.

        Hello kwashi01,
Tampa, FL is one of my favorite cities in the world! With so many activities and the warm weather, Tampa is a place I would LOVE to move to! As far as 4G data services, there aren’t any issues reported in the city. May I ask what make and model device are you using? Also, what zip code are you in when you are having the issue? Below are a few basic troubleshooting steps that you can try.
• Do a battery and sim car pull, reinsert, and retest.
• Verify that the software is current on the device.
• Ensure that data roaming is enabled.
• Perform a hard reset.
Prior to completing a hard reset, I would recommend verifying that your personal info is backed up. This can be done using your Gmail account or by using Backup Assistant Plus. After you complete the factory reset, there is a brief tutorial on how to setup the device. Once the device is setup, please test all services for functionality and advise if issue is resolved.
Thank you…

• Brief random network outages

Hi
We have a networking issue that I hope someone may be able to help me with.
We run a Windows domain - single domain, single subnet. Three domain controllers: Windows 2012 R2 Standard, Windows 2008 Standard (32bit) and Windows Server 2003 Standard. The Win 2008 DC holds all the FSMO roles. DNS is setup on the 2008 and 2012 DC's
with the 2008 DC having a secondary DNS server installation. DHCP is setup on the 2008 DC. The 2003 server only functions as a DC - no roles apart from that are installed and it will be demoted very soon.
Two member servers: Windows Storage Server 2008 (64bit) and Windows 2012 Standard. The Storage server hosts 99% of our data with the other 1% being on the 2008 DC. Two email server software installations (not Exchange) - one on the storage server and one
on the 2012 R2 member server. NPS Routing and Remote Access is configured on the 2012 member server to handle VPN connections.
35 client PC's: 34 run Windows 7 and one runs Vista.
We have two Draytek routers on the network - one acts as the gateway to the Internet and the other provides wireless coverage. There are two networked printers - a Ricoh MFD 'workgroup' printer and a small mono Brother.
Network shares are accessed via DFS. The Servers, the Ricoh printer and routers have static IP's, most of the clients and the Brother printer use DHCP.
All cables terminate at one of two patch panels which then feed to one or more switches. Small desktop switches are used to expand the network where needed. The network is divided into two segments, hence two patch panels, but both run under the same 192.168.0.xxx/255.255.255.0
subnet.
Before we upgraded all our computers to Windows 7 the network was fine. The present network was built using CAT5 cabling in 2004 (we'd used BNC before that). We rarely had any network issues and when we did it would affect all clients. When
I first introduced Windows 7 it was on three PC's and one or more of them would randomly have problems accessing the network and Internet.
When I upgraded all our machines to Windows 7 we are seeing one or more machines experiencing network problems most days.
What happens is the (any) computer will suddenly stop - Applications accessing files across the network e.g. email and Access will hang and report as (not responding) and the 'busy' cursor appears. Try and save an office document and the busy cursor appears
and the application hangs. The Start menu is not accessible - for example I always have my Taskbar hidden and when this happens on my machine moving the mouse to the bottom of the screen does nothing, the Taskbar stays hidden. Sometimes, the Taskbar may
appear, but nothing happens when the Start button is clicked. When trying to access shared folders via Computer the green bar slowly moves through the Address Bar and after a while it reports the share is not accessible. The affected computers are also unable
to open any web pages.
The hang will last for anything from 20 secs to a minute or more after which the computer will continue operating normally. On very rare ocassions the the computer will not recover after 10mins or more and I have to force a shutdown but I assume this is
not directly related to the issues I am seeing.
The short outages are completely random and leave no trace of a problem in the System or Application Logs. When a machine does not recover (which is very rare) the System Log reports that a DNS server could not be reached.
This will happen on a single PC and others will be fine. But, it may affect several PC's over the course of a day.
When the outage happens I can Winkey+R, open cmd.exe and successfully ping the DNS servers by IP and name.
All the systems are up to date. I ensure that Windows Updates are installed on the Servers when they are released and the clients are updated the next day via WSUS.
I am pretty sure that this is also affecting Active Directory. I am seeing transient errors on the Domain Controllers where, for example, a Global Catalog can not be contacted. Both DC's are GC's and when I run nltest to test the connection to a GC within
30 minutes of the error being reported the test passes. I assume the servers are also experiencing these random outages.
The problem I have is that because they are random and because, on the clients at least, no errors are logged I cannot reproduce the problem and have no idea what may be causing the issue.
The problem is not a general network issue as it randomly affects one client at a time - if was a general network problem I would expect all the clients to lose connectivity.
Has anyone else seen a similar issue and know what the cause was, please?
Thanks

how old is the server?
How old is your network switches?
Any computer or server with NIC or network switches going south, may cause the intermittent issue.
They may flood the network with packets thus hang the system.

• Cannot login to my usual account after power outage

Had two power outages last night; machine survived the first one, but after the second outage and restoration I cannot get in to my usual user account. What happens:
Grey apple screen, normal
Blue screen with progress bar indicating that OS X is loading... before the indicator fills all the way to the right, it exits to a blue screen [of death] with a mouse cursor (which works) and just stays there. It goes no further. Rebooting obviously does not fix it; I rebooted a dozen times trying to get beyond that.
What I've tried that hasn't fixed it:
Rebooting
Unplugging and replugging, both computer side and wall
Repairing both the disk and permissions--done, no effect
Safe booting and attempting to log into the account under a safe boot--it loads the wallpaper and hangs right there, no dock, no menu loaded
Removing the User/~ Preferences folder
I believe that what is causing the problem is some login startup item. However, since I cannot even log in in Safe mode, I can't start the System Preferences Accounts panel to remove login items.
Question: Is there another way to remove the login startup items? Removing the Preferences folder has not helped. I'm missing something. What is it?
I can log in to any other user account. I am currently in Root.

From the root account, open the Accounts pane of System Preferences and delete the login items for your normal account; an admin account should be able to do this for any account on the system, while non-admin accounts can only be used to change their own login items.
If removing the login items does not fix the issue, remove other parts of the home folder until you are able to log in to that account. If you've removed/renamed the entire home folder and aren't able to log in successfully, check that the permissions on the hard disk allow all accounts to read it; if you still can't successfully log in to that account, restore a previous version of the NetInfo database.

• FiOS Digital Voice and Internet Reoccurring Problem with Outage at Same Time Every Night

I was hoping someone could help me out or enlighten me as to what may be going on.
I've been having problems the past two nights (5/17 and 5/18) where at 12:45am CST, both the internet and Digital Voice service go out.  The problem with this is that the outage trips our home alarm due to the dropped connection (which scares our child) and disrupts any large downloads (e.g. Steam purchases) that I may have set up to run during the night. After 5-10 minutes, service is restored and works properly.
We haven't had problems of this nature since we switched to digital voice around two months ago, and we tested our alarm system with the provider to ensure it works properly with Digital Voice (it does).
Does anyone know if Verizon has been doing backend updates or something of that nature that would knock service out two nights in a row at the same time?
I haven't received any information indicating there are outages, planned or otherwise, in our area, and the Verizon support staff I contacted, while polite and courteous, did not have an answer for me.  I am hoping that we don't have to endure a third night of this.
Thanks

To follow up on this, we again had another occurance at 12:45am CST Saturday morning.  Thankfully, though, we did not have another occurance Sunday morning.
However, I still would like to know what the root cause of this problem is.  I've powercycled my ONT (removed power, removed battery backup) per Verizon support's instructions Friday afternoon, but it did not appear to have any impact on the problem at hand.

• What can happen to an intel-based iMac when a power outage occurs while it is on and I unplug it to avoid a surge when power comes back?

The power went out today, while I was using my intel-based iMac (2008) and I rushed to unplug the power from the wall, before the poser could surge back on. Did I do damage?
I have a surge protector that it was plugged into, but I thought just to be safe I should unplug!
Thanks, Group!
artdough

Good point!
Art a surge protector (a good one) is designed to provide contant power to the devices that are plugged into it. This is good in the event of a surge of power up or down however in the event of a complete power outage they're of no value.
A UPS (Uninteruptable Power Supply) is just that, it has surge protection like a surge suppresor however it also has a battery integrated into it. The battery is designed to provide enough power for a user to do an orderly shutdown. In addition most UPS's can also plug into your iMac via a USB cable. Then you can set energy saver preferences that you cannot see now. For example you can set how long the computer should run in the event of power going off. You can also set if you want the computer to reboot or not when the power comes back on etc. For about $100 you can get a fine UPS that will add an additional layer of protection for your computer and give you extra peace of mind.

• Power Supply blows a fuse, Ext Soundcard power outages, Time Machine.

Power Supply blows a fuse, Ext Soundcard momentary power outages. Time Machine won't backup.
Ok here's my setup
Mac Book Pro 13" APRIL 2011 latest firmware. 8GB RAM. Surge Protected mains connection..
M-AUDIO FIREWIRE SOUNDCARD AUDIOPHILE most recent drivers and powered by the MacBooks Firewire Out using a NEET Pro Lead,
The M-Audio has 2 x Firewire Ports and I take one  to a 2TB 7800rpm Iomega iMedia Drive which daisy chains to a 1TB FireWire Seagate HardDrive and yes both are Pre Powered and formatted for Time Machines exclusive use.
The M-Audio Firewire module can be pre powered but isn't for this reason, the FireWire Out from the Mac IS pre powered, and I'm using a good quality NEET lead that powers the Audiophile ok over the last few months. I have been warned by the manual if I add a power supply to a pre powered firewire chain I could damage equipment, I'm now running the the screen as low as possible and the backlit keys off to minimise power drain, I also use an Acer 24" Monitor with a NEET DV mini port to HDMI adaptor and it's been working great but this must be more power drain on the power supply, One of the USB ports goes to an Native Instruments Maschine Sampler Module, the other goes to a Pre Powered 4 Port USB Hub and that has been fine, it has 1 Axiom 25 USB Midi Keyboard, 2 Pre Powered Hard Discs 1 Portable USB Drive. Now the problems started with Time Machine it can't backup and I get Hard Disk Unsafe Disconnects and Failed Time Machine Backups and Now my Soundcard does the same in that it momentarily disconnects and reconnects in a second, in Settings under ENERGY SETTINGS I've set hard drives to Never Shut Down, and the Screen also, it's been more frequent, then a fuse blows in the Power Supply without tripping up my Surge Protector Socket pfft! just great, well it is only a 3AMP Fuse in the Plug Socket but it saved my MacBook!, ok checks Mains, yes it's old, and I've started using the Central Heating alot now and when it turns on it could be causing a power surge, same with the FridgeFreezer. Things i've tried, on the Seagate pre powered FireWire Hardisc I have switched the Firewire lead to its second FW port, I got no errors with Time Machine this time, not 100% it's done yet, Soundcard resets in Logic 9 ****, I do have 2 lower quality Firewire Leads that go from the Soundcard to the 2 harddrives will need upgrading ASAP, thats next, I recon its time to upgrade the Soundcard as well for a Focusrite or similar as all my M-Audio Soundcards would literaly loose there minds on PCs and Macs, flakey drivers would just drop out of the Audiophole Firewire Card, more than I care to mention, so if that happens it could explain why the Time Machine drive drops out also, hmmm, and there was me thinking if I used a Mac it would all be ok. wrong. Would apreciate any qualified input, thanks.

Ok some updates I see, 6 in total including a firmware and security upgrades, also two Native Instruments Updates, Reaktor and Kontakt. I will be testing, this. Before the Updates I managed to peak the CPU load in Logic 9 and was only using 14 tracks, will need to bounce the Synth Plugs and drum tracks and run all the source samples from the Local internal drive a Hitachi 5400rpm drive hmmm :/ will experiment, anyway my Iomega FW drive froze up the Iomega Mac Companion is the correct name for it 2TB 7800rpm but it met it's match or was is the processor? Still sussing it all out. Firewire leads upgrade in effect. testing.. bleep. .

• Unable to load OS bound to a domain after power-outage

I currently manage 200 2013 iMac but since installing Yosemite I've noticed that after the macs are joined to the domain and a network user is using the machine and a power outage occurs ALL iMac running Yosemite will not boot up. The boot process reaches about 30 percent and stays on the grey apple logo screen. After extensive troubleshooting we found that this only occurs when a user is logged in when the power outage occurs. However if the power outage occurs and the units are not being used by a network user the computer boots up fine. We completed a fresh install created a local user without adding it to the domain. We then logged in with the local user mimic'd a power-outage and the computer booted up fine. I have done extensive troubleshooting noticed that the issue does not occur with local users only users authenticated on a domain.
Note: We also noticed that if we deleted network users from the user folder and then performed the power outage and the unit loads the OS fine.
Any help with this is greatly appreciated...

Insert the Mac OS X 10.4 installation disk into the drive, and then restart the computer with the Option key held down. If you are able to successfully start up from the drive, install Mac OS X 10.4.

• How Can I open the aspx pop up panel and Where is my tamper data plugin ?

I use Firefox/3.6.12 and Windows7 Ultimate 32 bit - I cant open my admin pop up aspx panel. I have same problem about fckeditor. I try to close this page only one page. Firefox is asking (save this page) namely not more pages and I close but firefox is in the proccess. I think pop up seems open in firefox but I cant see. The other problem ; Tamper data plugin lost after updated from my tools menu. Thanks for everything

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

• 2 months of 'my' problem is a major outage at my l...

I would like to praise the staff at the BT call centre, for doing an excellent job under extreme presure, with little or no help from other BT technicians. for the past 2 months i have been in contact with them about 'my' connection problem. the advisor who took my case called me up to day, to  say that all my woes can be traced to a major service outage at my local exchange, that is not only affecting me, but a lot of people - much to his astonishment and dispair, as no-one in the centre knew anything about the problem.  I only knew of the problem due to using a different modem to the bthub, and a download monitor they are working on the problem, but i wonder how many other people on here are suffering the same 'fault' as me - it being their local exchange, and not them.. by the look of it, quite a few.
below i summarise my journey to discovery (which is/was going to be the basis of my complaint, now fingures crossed - not needed)
Prior to June 30th 2010, I received an email from BT services saying that if I re-signed up on my option 3 plan, my current speed of 7mbps could be increased to around 13mbps – I signed up.
On or about 1st July 2010, Btbroadband suffered a major outage, losing the service for 2 days or so. After about 5 days, I still had not regained a proper service. I was receiving a asdl2 line speed of 0.01Kbp, so I made enquiries with the  BT help desk, who blamed a fault in my BT home hub modem even though I told them I did not use it prior to the problem, and only connected it after calling BT.
The day before my new Bthomehub2 modem arrived, I regained some level of service –
on July 6th  2010, of  around 2420kbps. Although extremely unhappy that my so called upgrade was infact been a downgrade, which had left me with half of what I had had before, I believed the BT help desk who had said their system was not at fault, so resigned my self to be on that speed.
I did a full system overhaul and rolled my system back a couple of months prior to ‘my’ problem, and brought and fitted a netgear router, all  to no effect, with my speed remaining constant at around 2418kbps.
On August 28th 2010, my speed dropped to 1963kbps
On August 29th 2010, my speed dropped to  729kbps
On August 29th 2010, my speed dropped to  340kbps
It then proceeded that my new ‘upto 20mb’ speed was 340kbps, and has remained so.
On  August 31st 2010, at 18.17hrs the BT help desk had my line reset to 6767kbps. I was getting a full  service
On September 1st 2010 by 05:20hrs the connection had dropped to 495kbps. By 07.28, it had reverted back to 340kbps.
On September 4th 2010, after a BT engineers visit, my DSL connection rate had been set to 8124kbps, with my ip profile set at 350kbps. tests on other speed checkers showed a 339kbps connection. I was told that the signal would improve, as it needed to synchronise .The engineer departed at 15.20 on  having done wire test from phone point and computer room. Capability of line was 18.6mb.
I was away that evening, but by the time I returned on September 5th  2010, my connection had reverted back to 340kbps.
Since then, my speed has been an average of around 340kbps.

• Wireless outage (IP only) for 5 minutes, every 15 minutes

Hey everyone,
I recently moved to the UK from the US, and in the process gave up my Airport Base Station for the much less friendly BT Home Hub. Since doing so, I have been having some very annoying problems with the wireless connection that I did not have before.
Essentially, what happens is that I lose IP connectivity (cannot ping the gateway, or get to the internet), but the Airport menu icon/Network Connect reports I am still connected to the wireless network, and there is no change in reported signal strength. I took a look at it with iStumbler, and there is pretty much no difference in signal/noise or any other readouts when the dropout occurs - the "wireless network" appears to be up, I just don't have IP connectivity.
Turning the Airport card on and off restores connection, but doing this every 15 minutes is very annoying, of course. If I wait 5 minutes with no IP connectivity, it comes back, once again with no corresponding change in signal strength.
This may be a result of the change in wireless access points, but there are some things about my particular situation that makes me wonder if it might be something related to my PowerBook/Airport card. Firstly, while I was moving, I was housesitting for friends, using a wired ethernet connection, when I installed the Airport security update and iTunes 7, so my configuration has changed since the last time I knew it to work well (I have since upgraded to OS X 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.1 over my intermittent wireless connection, but I have had this problem since before doing so).
Secondly, and more importantly, I have noticed an incredibly regular pattern to the outages. Specifically, the times I mentioned above are pretty much exact and consistent. Since I started having the problem, I opened a terminal window and ran a continuous ping of the gateway, and my results are as follows:
Every 895-900 pings (i.e. seconds), there is an outage, which lasts for 296-297 pings/seconds. So, for example, there is an outage at icmp_seq=1025 (895 sec after the last outage), and the ping command then recieves its next response at icmp_seq=1321 (296 sec). There is then subsequently an outage at 2221 (900 sec after the last outage) which resumes at 2517 (296 sec), etc., etc.
What makes this especially interesting is that, as I mentioned above, if I turn the Airport card on and off I get connectivity back. The connection then lasts for 900 seconds from when I turned the card back on, not from the last outage. So the outage seems come specifically after 15 minutes of having the Airport card on and connected, rather than the WAP giving up the ghost every 15 minutes regardless of what's connected to it.
The WAP is running in 802.11g mode with WPA security using WPK encryption. The SSID is not being broadcast. This is a modification of the original BT Home Hub settings (64-bit WEP encryption? No thanks) but pretty similar to what I had on my Airport Base Station. The WAP's event log shows nothing out of the ordinary, and looking at the device during the outage doesn't really show any problems. If I plug into the wired port while I'm having one of these 5 minute outages, it works.
I have also tried changing the wireless channel it runs on, but this has no affect.
I don't have any other computers/devices in the flat so I can't test whether this outage is universal or specific to my computer, but I was wondering if anybody else has experienced a similar problem? Is there any way I could narrow it down more between the WAP and the PowerBook? The regularity of the outage, and the fact that IP gives out, but I don't get disconnected from the wireless network seems to two very tantalizing clues.
Thanks,
Andrew
PowerBook G4 15-inch (FW800)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2GB RAM, 1.67 GHz G4

I am still having this problem and am starting to get really annoyed by it. Since my last posting, the following things have happened:
1) Last Thursday, I turned my Powerbook on and experienced a full day of work at home with a consistent wireless connection. Nothing had changed in configuration on either the router or the Powerbook. Then, at night, I turned my computer off, turned it on Friday morning, and again experienced dropouts every 15 minutes, for 5 minutes exactly.
2) By this time I had already called BT and complained, and they were kind enough to send me a new hub. I got it today, took the old one down and set it up (via ethernet cable) with the exact same settings as the old one, and then connected to it via wireless - I was able to connect successfully with no interruptions. Then, I shut my computer down to go out for a few hours. I am now back, and since booting my computer, I now once again only stay connected for 15 minutes at a time!
So, it now seems to be only 95% consistent, instead of 100% consistent, but I am really beginning to suspect my Powerbook, since it seems to be behaving differently on different boots! Please help? What can I do to isolate this problem? As I have demonstrated in my previous posts, I have already looked at iStumbler, etc. and am still having the same exact problems, even with new hardware!
