Overlapping Channels and DVR issues

I wanted to report an issue or see if anyone else has experienced what has been happening to me.  I live in the DC metro area and I go to the HD NBC (504) or HD CBS (509) stations with no problems. However multiple times I have gone to either station and what is showing is not correct.  Sometimes when I go to channel 504, I'm getting programming produced by the local NBC channel, or when I go to channel 509, I get the weather radar.  When this happens on either channel, I just turn the channel and then come back and the correct content is being broadcasted.  I believe this is also causing DVR issues as well because sometimes when I got to watch a recording from either of these channels, I see the show recorded twice and only for 1 or 2 seconds.  It's frustrating because I have lost out on shows that are not repeated nor on demand.  Any ideas on what is gong on?

One of my DVR boxes has not been able to utilize any of the DVR functions since the second week I've had verizon. I have sent support emails with no response, chatted live with an agent to get help and they told me to call the support number because they can't help, and I have spoken to an agent over the phone so they could tell me to unplug and plug it back in or run around my house to fix cables outside my home; nothing has worked. Is this common? If i didn't like my internet speed I would have dropped this garbage service a long time ago !
I'd just bypass customer service and swap out the dvr for a different one. You can go to a fios store, do it through your account on verizon.net or the easiest way, do it on the dvr itself.
Go to menu, customer support, set top box exchange.

  • Overlapping Channels Query

    Hi,
I'm troubleshooting a wireless issue at one of our sites and had a query about the current setup. I've attached a diagram of the AP locations and the channels that are in use.
I notice that there are a few neighbouring APs using the same (overlapping) channel and wondered if this is of any concern. Wireless is not my speciality, but as far as I understand it, neighbouring APs are supposed to use non-overlapping channels.
    For Info;
    APs 2-3,9 -10, and 26 use omni-directional antennas
APs 4-8, 11-15, use directional antennas facing out of the building.
All APs are autonomous and use the same SSID
Should the channels be reconfigured so there are no overlapping channels?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi,
When working with wireless on the 2.4ghz we need to make sure that you distribut the 3 non overlapping channels between all your access points so that the access points with the same channel are the further apart and on the 5ghz we do not need to worry about this becasue all the channels are non overlapping vrs the 2.4ghz that the only non overlapping channels are 1-6-11.
Also we need to keep in mind that other access points close to you from another company will create interfirence to yours and yours to them the only way to fix this is distribut the non overlapping channels between your access points and the close access points.

  • FiOS Quantum Update and I still have DVR issues after three weeks!!!

    Verizon,
I have not been able to set up a NEW SERIES on my Quantum DVR for three weeks and I am getting tired of it.
I went through all the troubleshooting with a tech on the phone, and had two techs come to my house. It is not my equipment, it is a BUG in the latest and greatest update, and I cannot revert back to the previous version! I am tired of paying extra money for a service I cannot use. Nobody has communicated with me in over a week. This is ridiculous and your customer service is really upsetting me. I am very disappointed in a new service that is now not working due to a poorly executed automatic update. At least let us choose to do updates. I usually wait a few weeks to make sure other people do not have any problems. Well, a bit buggy and as I have said, I am tired of it.
GET IT FIXED, OR GIVE ME BACK MY OTHER EQUIPMENT THAT WORKED FINE. TIME TO DOWNGRADE, TO GET THE SERVICE I AM PAYING FOR.
I will continue pointing people toward DirecTV until this is resolved. I am telling anyone who will listen about the poorly executed update and the poor customer service.
    Thanks...

    Good morning TNS_2,
    I get the fact that you have been on these forums for some time and helped some people out. You are not going to be able to help me, or all the other people affected by this latest and greatest update. {please keep it relevant}
While I do appreciate you replying, I was not looking for any reply from any peers, just to let Verizon know that all of us who got the update and had it go very bad on our new DVR's are tired of it.
I have gone through troubleshooting on the phone and had FiOS techs to my house. The techs all know about it and are as frustrated about it as we are. This is a known issue that is irritating more and more people every day. I am not going to describe my issue further, as there is nothing you or any other peers can do. It is all up to Verizon to fix what they broke!
So, if you are offended by me speaking my mind, I appologize. We all know that Verizon keeps an eye on forums to see what social media is saying about them. They will be able to keep an eye on Google searches as I am launching a website about my recent Verizon experience with their new Quantum service. I will use plenty of keywords to ensure it is found in a search.
Your stuff may be working great at this time. There are several others who are having problems. We all know that only a handful of people ever post on forums. After doing a search on the Quantum DRV update problem, it is obvious Verizon has some issues that is affecting their customers. We (peers) can all agree on that.
You say you dont want replies from peers, just Verizon, but Verizon doesnt read these posts at all like you think they do. These are simply peer to peer forums. Only the mods who run the forums are here and esculate issues to support if the issue qualifies.
Verizon does have a long list of bugs since the latest update that they dropped the ball on and we can only hope they are working on it and will push out a fix very soon. They did release the update without properly testing it first. There's not much we can do except wait and I'm hoping since its taking some time to roll a new update out they are doing it right this time and are not only fixing the issues, but testing them before just rolling it out. I highly doubt the top guys in Verizon do google searches looking for issues we are having when they already know about them. The only thing that would possibly send them a message on if one is frustrated is leaving them all together.

  • Extra commercials overlapping shows rendering DVR nearly useless

I find it hard to believe that a search for this subject only rendered one hit from 2011. Be that as it may, has anyone else noticed how Comcast is playing extra commercials, on many channels. making shows overlap and rendering the DVR nearly useless? It started about two months ago and is only getting worse. At first the programs were going for 61 minutes and now they are goiing anywhere from 60-64. There is not any extra program, it is all commercials. It's got me considering leaving the television portion of my $240.00 a month Comcast bill for another option that is locally available. When fiber optics arrive then I will cut all ties. These extra commercials are the main reason why, after all of these years, I am pretty set to leave. What they were thinking (MORE REVENUE) is wrong, it was illconcieved. People will quickly tire of it and Comcast will lose in the long run.

    dwitham wrote:
This problem has nothing to do with Comcast. Some channels and networks have some of their shows run a minute or two long and don't send the correct time schedule to the cable and sat providers. It doesn't matter if it is Dish, Directv or Comcast, they all have this problem. The work arounds are if you can get an X1 DVR with more tuners there will be less schedule conflicts, or record some of the shows on cable channels later in the day when they repeat.Thank you for your reply. I understand what you are referring to but I am referring to something completely different. I am referring to programs actually stating in the TV Guide that they are starting and ending at times other than on the hour or half hour. For instance, right now on my television screen I have the TV Guide showing. The following is this evenings lineup on the History Channel  Pawn Stars 8:00-8:31 PMPawn Stars 8:31-9:03 PMForged In Fire 9:03-10:03 PMForged In Fire 9:03-11:01 PMPawn Stars 11:01-11:31 PMPawn Stars 11:31-12:01 PMPawn Stars 12:01-12:32 AM There are other channels where the same thing is occurring. The TV Guide above is what is going to be shown, at the times listed and if I record them, that is when they start and how long they are running. The following is what it should be Pawn Stars 8:00-8:30 PMPawn Stars 8:30-9:00 PMForged In Fire 9:00-10:00 PMForged In Fire 10:00-11:00 PMPawn Stars 11:00-11:30 PMPawn Stars 11:30-12:00 PMPawn Stars 12:00-12:30 AM Hopefully I have made the issue clearer. I can't be the only one that is getting hit with all of these weird times and extra commercials. If it is only happening to the older model DVR users and not the X1 users then perhaps Comcast is trying to aggrivate customers into getting on X1 by making our DVRs basically useless with these convoluted schedules? If this is the case, and I suspect it is, not many people will be happy. Who could ever trust a company that treats their customers that way? REreading your reply, I am wondering if this is controlled by Comcast or by the History Channel?

  • New to Fios: Schedules Recordings and DVR Capacity

I just gave up on RCN in lieu or Verizon Fios and thus far - can't stand the dvr.
    1) The capacity is no where near what RCN's was. I had days worth of TV, movies, etc saved and never ran out of space. With Verizon, it's been less than a week and I`m already half full. I don't have a HD TV, but I`m wondering if my lack of space is caused by the recorder taping in HD. How do I check this setting to ensure that everything being recorded is standard definition?
    2) The Verizon DVR is really bad at only keeping two episodes of a show, and only recording new/first run shows. Is there any setting to make this work better? I tried to set it to record first runs only of the show scrubs, on any channel (i wasnt sure what channel the new ones are run on) and in two days it taped 10 episodes...

The FiOS DVR has the same 160GB capacity as the RCN DVR.
SD channels are 0-499 and HD channels are 500+.  All the SD local channels can be found under 50.
Recordings from HD channels consume 3-6x the capacity of SD channels.

  • Overlapping v's Non-overlapping channels...

I know it is bad practise to have more than one AP within the same cell area using the same channel, but wondered what the effects of this were. For example, if I had an AP in channel 6 and another AP ten yards from it in channel 6 also, what would be the repercussions?
Thinking about it logically, there would be radio collisions. Each AP could potentially try to transmit at the same time causing collisions. Therefore, you would see slow throughput and high error counts on the AP? Also, if a WLAN client transmitted a frame to a user on the wired network, each AP would receive it (regardless of association) and forward the frame on - resulting in the wired client receiving two copies of the same frame (one from each AP)???
Can anyone, explain why it is not good practise to have over-lapping channels (or any useful web links/documents)?
I will continue to use non-overlapping channels, but it would be nice to know why.
    Thanks

    Hi Darren,
    That is a great question. Here are some links that have really good answers;
Channel Deployment Issues for 2.4-GHz 802.11 WLANs
    From this doc;
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/prod_technical_reference09186a00802846a2.html#wp134263
    Assigning 802.11b Access Point Channels
An important concept to note regarding channel assignments is that the channel actually represents the center frequency that the transceiver within the radio and access point uses (e.g., 2.412 GHz for channel 1 and 2.417 GHz for channel 2). There is only 5 MHz separation between the center frequencies, and an 802.11b signal occupies approximately 30 MHz of the frequency spectrum. The signal falls within about 15 MHz of each side of the center frequency. As a result, an 802.11b signal overlaps with several adjacent channel frequencies. This leaves you with only three channels (channels 1, 6, and 11 for the U.S.) that you can use without causing interference between access points.
    From this link;
    http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/972261
    Channels and international compatibility
Although the statement that channels 1, 6, and 11 are "non-overlapping" is incomplete, the 1, 6, 11 guideline has merit. If transmitters are closer together than channels 1, 6, and 11 (e.g. 1, 4, 7, and 10), overlap between the channels will probably cause unacceptable degradation of signal quality and throughput.

  • Aiport Express - channels and muticast rate

Im using an airport express for my home network and wondered about the various settings to try out. Firstly does the channel make any difference to signal strength? I've noticed several neighbours have wireless networks on channel 1 so wanted to switch from that.
also regarding mutlicast rate. setup comes set as 5.5 and wondered what the various other options do, ie: which would be best for performance as oposed to furthest range.
    11=best 2=furthest?
    Cheers

    kladzer welcome to the discussions.
See if this doesn't explain it for you.
Channels are important to understand because they affect the overall capacity of your WLAN. A channel represents a narrow band of radio frequency. Since radio frequency modulates within a band of frequencies, there is a limited amount of bandwidth within any given range to carry data. Therefore it is important that the frequencies do not overlap or else the throughput would be significantly lowered as the network sorts and reassembles the data packets sent over the air.
Knowing that the 802.11a specification operates at radio frequencies between 5.15 and 5.875 GHz, and that the 802.11b and 802.11g specification operates at radio frequencies in the 2.4 to 2.497 GHz range, we can see that the 802.11a has a wider frequency band, allowing more channels and more overall throughput. The wider frequency band allows 802.11a to support up to eight non-overlapping channels. However, 802.11b/g standards support only up to three non-overlapping channels.
Each channel is capable of carrying the maximum throughput for its standard. Therefore, the 802.11b and 802.11g standards have a maximum of three non-overlapping channels, each carrying 11 Mbps throughput (33 Mbps total) and 54 Mbps (162 Mbps total) throughput, respectively. The 802.11a standard has a maximum of eight non-overlapping channels carrying a maximum 54 Mbps throughput each (432 Mbps total). (For more on Wi-Fi standards, check out this Quick Reference guide.)
The frequency ranges and channels may vary by country. In the U.S., the 802.11b (2.4 GHz) standard operates on 11 channels. All but three of those channels are overlapping channels. Channels one, six, and eleven are the only non-overlapping channels.
Most manufactures set their default channel to one of the non-overlapping channels. D-Link products, for example, default to channel six. You have the option of selecting which channel your WLAN operates on in order to avoid interference from other wireless devices that operate in the 2.4 GHz frequency range. Examples of this would be 2.4 GHz cordless phones and X-10 wireless products.
The biggest advantage of 802.11b is that it's the most widely deployed wireless LAN technology and provides good wall penetration and indoor range. The advantage of 802.11a is that it provides increased network capacity and interferes with other wireless devices far less than 802.11b products do.
So to answer your question, unless you have a specific reason for changing it, I would suggest you keep your wireless channel configured for the manufacturer's default settings. If, however, you must change it, for the best performance I would suggest trying to use one of the other non-overlapping channels first: Channels one, six, and eleven. Other then interference issues, there really is no other reason or advantage to selecting another channel.
    Cheers Don

  • Guide and dvr suddenly not working

The last few days the guide and dvr haven't been displaying. Pushing either guide or dvr will only make the current channel display in the upper right corner and the rest of the screen is black. Any idea how to fix this?

  • Logical Channels and Opening An Application

    Hello,
Upon sending an APDU to a Java Card (a GEM card) to open a channel, it works fine. But when I try to select an application on that new logical channel which is in the secured state, it always gives back an error, but I can select that same application from the basic channel. Do I need to do something else besides simply opening the new logical channel to let it be able to select applications in the secured state?
    Thanks,
    Mizax

    Hello,
    Thanks for your response.
Yes I'm sure the card supports multiple logical channels, I've checked the historical bytes, and am able to open the number of logical channels the historical bytes say I should.
I can select other applications on the new logical channel and send commands to them, that works fine. When selecting a secured application, it fails with error code. In particular, I'm trying to select the card manage application, and that fails. Although this shouldn't be necessary, I make sure the basic channel doesn't have the card manager selected also:
    Log:
    Warm Reset Card
    Open Logical Channel 1
    Command: 00 70 00 01
    Response: 90 00
Select some other App on the Basic Channel:
    Command: 00 A4 04 00 0F A0 00 00 00 18 50 21 00 00 00 00 00 57 49 42
    Response: 90 00
Select card manager on Channel 1:
    Command: 01 A4 04 00 07 A0 00 00 00 18 43 4D
    Response: 6E 00
To sum up: Open a new logical channel, select some other app on the basic channel, try to select the card manager on the new logical channel, it fails. If I then reselect the card manager on the basic channel, it works fine. I can select other non-secured apps on the new logical channel, and that works fine too. In any of the cases I mention, I ensure that only one channel is trying to select an app, so that I'm not worrying about the issue of whether an app is multi-selectable.
I've been wrestling and googling this for hours with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mizax

  • HD package confusion - sports channels and Extreme HD

I'm a recent FIOS convert from Optimum. After about 10 days I can say I am very pleased for the most part with the new service. Picture quality is better and I like the guide and DVR features better than my Optimum STB.
The one problem I have had surfaced on the day of my installation. I ordered the Extreme HD package along with the movie promo package for 3 months. When I went to test my new gear with the Golf Channel HD it showed "not subscribed" and my installer explained that I wouldn't be getting that (or Tennis, which I also wanted) if I wasn't also subscribed to a Sport Package.
I pulled out the channel line-up document I was given when I placed the order at  Verizon kiosk. It's the "Downstate New York August 2009" color brochure. In it there is a big red box for "Extreme HD" that says (quoting now) "EXTREME HD includes all channels in the box below & in FIOS TV Local. Additional subscriptions may be added. To order this package or other subscription packages go to verizon.com/fiostvcentral." All of the sport channels, including Golf, Tennis, NFL, etc. are listed in the box and there is nothing to suggest that additional subscriptions are needed. That's what the salesman confirmed.
So, my poor installer guy said he couldn't do anything. I called Verizon, got shuffled around a bit, and finally got to someone who tried explaining that the brochure in my hand wasn't actually the one for the area I live in. And yet my community is one of those listed under Local Programming.
In the end what he offered to do was to give me the additional sport package subscription for a discount for the next 12 months. At that point I was tired of spending time on the phone. But I am still not happy about it.
Has anybody had a similar experience? It's the only black mark on my FIOS so far, but it's a pretty big one.

Believe me, I have been over this thing with a magnifying glass looking for something like that. It just isn't there. Of course, there is the standard language at the end of the brochure that "Programming services offered within each package are subject to change..."
Still, it feels a bit like bait and switch. I was getting Golf and Tennis (both SD and HD) in Optimum for no additional charges.

  • New Airport Extreme and iPhone Issues

I've had the networking day from ****. I previously had a 3rd Gen Time Capsule at our restaurant, connected to a Cisco 26port gigabit POE switch and Comcast digital voice and internet. Over the past few days, employees have reported trouble accessing the the Wifi network. After several restarts and firmware upgrades (including the dreaded "firmware problem" to fine update), nothing worked. I changed channels, back to auto, back to specific channels, back to auto. Made open guest networks. Nothing worked consistently. My iPhone might connect and my friend's might not. Nor his laptop consistently. Our Axis network cameras might take a bit extra time to connect. All quite random and quite frustrating.
So I swap out an older Airport Extreme (4th gen I believe) using the same configuration as the TC (Time Capsule). It works fine, except for the last port not working as expected. No matter, I plug the mac mini into the Cisco switch and off we go. Nevertheless, I'm still told we are suffering random Wifi issues. So I buy a brand new AE (5th gen) today to replace that one. Should work like a charm I thought. Right....
Several hours later, I finally have the new AE working, but only after doing several hard resets/factory restores, the works. For some reason, the mac mini could not successfully update any of the connected AEs - whether connected directly into the same AE, or if the Mini was connected to the switch. Nothing worked. Every time I tried to update the AE, it would hang and force me to unplug and plug it back in. It would also never save setting changes. I finally resorted to a friend's macbook to be able to restore it successfully. And once that worked, the mini was able to update the AE flawlessly. Our Point of Sales (POS) machines connect fine, our cameras connect fine, wifi printer connects, and the mini connects, and everything has internet.
Except my iPhone 5. Of course. It gets a signal fine (full bars). It gets an IP address. But I can't surf the web. Or download email. Or iMessages. Anything. No internet access. I try hard restarts on my iphone. I try assigning IP addresses by MAC address. I try resetting the AE. I try renaming the WiFi name. Nothing. I can make a guest network that works (on a different IP table, btw - 172, not 192.) But other than that, no access. Grrrr.
So I have a "working" AE router where some devices successfully connect (through wifi and ethernet) and some dont' (wifi iPhone). My iPhone connects fine to my home TC. So shouldn't be anything to do with that. But I'm at a loss. I'm going to go back and restore everything and power cycle everything tonight or tomorrow night. I don't know if that will help, but it's worth a try. Lord knows it feels like I've tried everything else.
Anyone have any good ideas of where to start besides voodoo dolls and baseball bats?

I took mine back, because I was having these very same issues. We use contivity too. I was able to connect only to one of three of the servers we manage (in Europe). I couldn't connect to the servers in Asia or here in the USA.
Replaced the Airport Extreme with my trusty old d-link 624, and no issues connecting to any of the three hubs.
Otherwise, I liked the Airport Extreme, and I'll consider buying it again when and if they address this VPN issue. I work at home so its obviously a "deal breaker" for me.

  • IQ826t Restart and Heating Issue

One thing I definitely do not like the HP's support especially when they will not allow us to buy a 7 Upgrade from Vista nor will they support something (even when I find their glitches and they admit after telling me it was just the OS).. On Repair work, I had to ship it out and this will be my 2-3 time to do repair on this PC in the past 3 years (and I have to wait a week for the repair to be done...)
    Besides that, IQ826t, Win 7 Ultimate SP1
All Drivers are up to date with HP website (utilizing Win 7 64 bit drivers and Firmware is up to date). AVG update/scan (no issue - confirmed even rootkit).. Malwarebyte - Scan and no issue
Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmentation done on a monthly and quarterly schedule
    Biggest Issue:
I am getting a crash with Win 7 0x124 Stop Error Message (happens periodically and even after a reboot)
Never had this issue until May and the upgrade to Win 7 was done last year with SP1 update done on March (so it is not an issue with the OS as HP support personnel seems to think... I proved them the issue with Windows Update History, The  Bluescreen error code on my error code reader)..  This machine under warranty and I had issues with it constant (even in Vista)
They state that it is the OS.. Again, if that was the case, I would think it would happen right away like my Toshiba on SP1 upgrade... That was not the case in the matter.  I have a firmware reset (default settings) and the issue persist..
The Error Code relates always HAL.dll or ntoskrnl.exe
One if hardware compatiblity and the other is an OS kernel exe file.. And this usually checking knowledge base relates to hardware failing due to 1) Compatibility (which HP website confirms is not the case) 2) OS corruption (which is not the case checking on safe mode and this happening STILL 3) Heat Issue (which I believe is the issue and was been documented on the Internet
What I am noticing is the unit is extremely HOT (vent is almost burning when it has been off and just turned on).. I wonder if the hardware pieces are literally melting to destruction since I can't just open it up (they state it will void my warranty)
The Symptoms before the Crash (happens any time.. Even right after a power up)
If you are playing audio or video, you will start to hear jitters and sound seems to echo itself .. Video would start to lag and become choppy..  Systems start to slow down and things seem to run very slow.. I have seen the power light on the PC start on but the touchscreen just go black (will not restart sometimes)..
Minor Issues (but could be related)
    1) When running PC Hardware Diagnostic, they will come up with an error code in the past and that was warranted for a motherboard replacement (of course, they ship the box to the wrong location and I was in the middle of my wedding so I get to it now).. It was pertaining to PCI Express Status ICH9 PCI Express Root Port  where it will generate an error code... Now, running the diagnostic... I will not get any error but PCI Express Root Port 3 & 5 do not show up on the diagnostic... Wouldn't that obvious show something that is a problem when there are 6 ports (which on the previous diagnostic that I can't grab past logs shows that). That is not warranted for a warranty work? Just a note, I got the fail test code (which was intermittent but keep happening and the tech support would not look at previous case.. Port 4 failed and a fatal device code)
    2) Blu-Ray player will not run and their answer is that it is your Blu-Ray until they realize that I ran it on 3 different Blu-Ray player standalone, different Blu-Ray, and confirm DVD will work.. They still think it is a software issue until they can't deny my point when it will not read the Blu-Ray no matter what (they took control and confirmed it).. They believe the HP SmartDVD software was failing because of Win 7 and not Vista (even when I downgrade and confirm it works, I stated the software is the issue...  Lone and behold, 2 months later they had an update that they refuse to admit I was RIGHT on the matter and done 15 hours of troubleshooting that they were wrong about)
    3) Wireless Keyboard and Mouse lost connectivity even if the battery is not low... Just stop typing or omit letters.. This is considering the keyboard is literally in front of the touchscreen
    4) Touchscreen is sensitive when it wants to be but won't in other... Constant issues there
This is why I have so much issue with support.. They seem to show that they will do anything to deny the issue.. Heck, I am a computer technian calling on the issue.. It ain't like I didn't troubleshoot on the matter... But they think we are all morons and when I prove them wrong, they will use any excuse to honor warranty... That is why it is amazing..
