Panasonic DVCPRO HD VTR capture issue

Hi, I am new to Final Cut and am having a problem capturing recently shot DVCPRO HD footage into Final Cut. I set it up to the proper settings and went to the log and capture window. THe problem is that the Final Cut doesn't seem to have control over the device. If I press play on the VTR (Panasonic 1200A), the footage comes through and plays in the capture window. BUT, I cannot control the device with my mouse (by pressing play, stop, etc) in the capture window. Also, when I type an In and an Out and try and "capture clip" it says it is "cueing" the clip but is never able to connect with the VTR. Any ideas? Something I'm missing?
Thanks in advance,
Brendan

Are we to assume that you have installed the optional AJ-YA(D)120AG board?
and are connected via FW?
And in menu 600 you've selected 1394?

  • DVCPRO sequence to Panasonic DVCPRO H1200 [missing] deck can't record IN

I have a Panasonic DVCPRO HD1200 tape deck and I am using DVCPRO 1080i/50 film.
I have not many troubles getting footage from my DVCPRO tapes into FCP via Firewire, but I cannot get the sequence on the timeline to record back IN the tape deck as I need to record the film for the library.
I have gone into the tape decks menu and changed everything to 50i and done all the right settings, even tried other settings but they are pretty much right.
FCP says in the Video setup menu [MISSING] DVCPRO (1080i), I have easy setuped to DVCPO 1080i/50 and the sequence is correct.
Have I missed a setting or 2? Please help!

If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://www.fcprescue.com and run it.

    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
    4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • HV20/FCP6/FW Problems/Capture Issues/WTH?!?!?!?!?!

Hello everyone. I have a Canon HV20 that was working fine for a day or two while I was capturing both HDV and DV footage from MIni DV tapes. I opened the log and capture window after changing tapes and BAM! it said it couldn't find the deck.
At first, I set the app up just like the Apple site said, and everything worked perfectly, even when dumping DV footage. Cameras setting never changed from factory default. Now this, and what's worse is that my computer won't recognize the FW device. I do have a G-tech plugged in as well, and with no HV20 the computer recognizes it in the FW800 port, but as soon as I plug in the HV20 the computer doesn't recognize anything though the drive still operates.
    I get this from FCP:
"Device is not connected or the capture preset is not setup correctly. You may still log offline clips.
This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device."
I get this from System Profiler:
    "FireWire Bus:
Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices.
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec"
If your advice is to purchase a new 17" MBP, I just might since i have had it with this POS right now.

Assuming the your FCP6 setup has not changed:
Canon cameras do not play well with other devices (hard drive for example) on the same FW bus. My son had capture issues with a Canon HV30 and G-Raid 2 on a 2007 Quad Mac Pro.
    The work-around:
Capture to an internal drive and move the media to the external, switch scratch disk, and reconnect media. (not ideal).
    The "fix":
Purchase a FW card for the MBP Express card slot and connect one of the FW devices to it. (Each device on different FW Buses.

  • Macam or Parian cause capture issues???

Hello all - I've been having capture issues with my HDV stuff (Crashes during capture - I posted the details under 'Crash under HDV log and Capture' if anyone can help me out with that issue and this is slightly related...
People elsewhere say that Macam or Parian can affect Final Cut - any experiences with that? any other programs that I should avoid that could negatively affect my fcp performance?
    Thanks!
    - John

I'm using FCP7 on Snow Leopard.
Any idea as to what could cause fcp to crash during capture (HDV to ProRes) if it's worked more then a dozen times prior??? Any other programs could affect such things? Nothing has been installed or changed on my system in over a month.

  • 24p advanced capture issue

    hi, folks...
posing an old question that was never completely resolved because i've bumped up against it again.
here's the situation: i've shot and edited hours of footage at 24p advanced on a canon xl2. captured using 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown removal without problems-- edited nicely into sequence.
but somewhere along the line something happened. now when i capture 24p footage and edit into the timeline i get motion blur every fourth frame (the pulldown frame?) the only way i can get a clean clip is if i capture 23.98 footage using the DV NTSC (30 fps) setting rather than 2:3:3:2 pulldown, then use the "advanced pulldown removal" feature from the tool bar after the fact (thanks patrick for this work-around).
so... situation is i can deal with this funky capture issue but it's an extra step and a pain in the rear-- anyone have any theories on how this happened and/or a permanent fix so i can shoot and capture the way fcp is supposed to work?
btw: checked the camera set-up again -- still 24p advanced, triple checked my fcp capture and sequence settings-- it's all at 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal and 23.98 as it should be. clip analysis on captured clips shows frame rate coming in at 23.98... as it should. couldn't find anything on topic in the search. appreciate thoughts. thanks much.

have you changed or downloaded anything at all that
might force the change in procedure, like a quicktime
update perchance, ipod update maybe???? just fishing
    for a clue......
thanks, zeb... but no. i do remember the day things went haywire-- i captured footage off one of the reels and noticed two of five clips had captured at 29.97 instead of 23.98. it was puzzling but i went back through capture presets, sequence, etc and remember double checking and resetting all the pertinent settings before going back and recapturing the footage that had come in a 29.97. it then captured at 23.98-- but the every-fourth-frame motion blur issue cropped up at that point. and it's been happening ever since.
i know the fcp settings are correct -- i just don't get it.
fyi... i notice that as footage plays out through the firewire from the xl2, it looks fine in the camera viewfinder but i can see the motion issues on the log and capture window as it plays-- this is obvious even before initiating capture.

  • So many capturing issues...Can anyone help?

    Hello fellow editors,
Over the past 2 weeks I have been struggling to fix my capturing issue. I have read the forums and have tried everything people have said about revlevant issues. So I ask for some help please.
I am editing on FCP 5 I use a Duel 2.0 G5 2.0 GB ram, I use 2 internal drives and 2 Lacies external. My deck is a JVC Mini DV/SVHS combo model number SR-VS30U.
So here are the issues either the deck fails to initilize or FCP sees the deck but the Preview is disabled and not allowing me to capture.
How do I fix this, I have been capturing often but just recently have started seeing all these issues.

So here are the issues either the deck fails to
initilize or FCP sees the deck but the Preview is
disabled and not allowing me to capture.
An obvious question: any adjustments - upgrades to Mac OS X, FCP, QuickTime 7 or alterations in hardware - in your system since your system decided to go AWOL on you?
Also, in terms of FireWire control, (not familiar with the exact model, so sorry if this isn't applicable) do you have device control but just not the ability to preview within the Log & Capture Window?
And do you have the ability to monitor externally? I've found that - in FCP 5 - if the deck is turned off for any reason - I shut it off once when a tape got jammed - the Log & Capture window will not be able to Preview but I was still able to Capture - and Batch Capture, at that - thanks to external monitoring.

  • DVCPRO capture issues - FCP or tape issue ?

Can anyone help me rule out whether this is a tape issue or a problem with my system ?
Trying to capture from DVC PRO tapes - problem is I don't know if they are DVC PRO 25 , DVC PRO 50, or HD
(we inherited these tapes from another company, who shot them but is not being forthcoming about how they shot...)
I have a Panasonic AJ-SD93 deck hooked up to Final Cut 5.1.4 via 6pin firewire (G5)
I start playing tape with regular DV NTSC settings in Log & Capture, timecode seems to be rolling continuously, the deck display says i is DVC PRO 50 - then I hit Capture Now and I get a freeze frame, and an error message :
Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted.
So is it the tape ?
The weird thing is I was able to capture up to about 10 min of the first tape.
Even when playing back, something changes on the tape at about 10 min - but what ? Timecode is continuous - what coudl change and make it uncapturable ?.

Did you choose the proper Easy Setup? You need to choose the Easy Setup that matches the footage, so FCP knows what sort of signal to expect. If you try capturing DVCPRO 50 as DV/NTSC, then you would get this error.

  • Panasonic HVX200 / DVCPRO HD and 32fps issues

    Hi all,
I'm having some problems shooting and working with 32fps footage in FCP.
The footage was shot at 720P/25PN in Film Mode with a frame rate of 32fps.
However all the footage we've imported into final cut via P2 is coming up as
50fps - and the footage has a number of dead or double frames.
We've been trying to narrow down at what stage in the process the problem
has been introduced or something was done wrong and i just cant figure it out.
I just found this in a apple white paper on P2 camera workflows:
"720pn, is a new native mode. In this mode, only the true frames that were shot are recorded onto the P2 card. Because the P2 card is not tied to a videotape rate, the frames are recorded with no pulldown pattern. This rate also extends the recording time of a P2 card."
Which is what we were shooting in yet i still have a pull down pattern when i try and conform the 32fps footage back to 25fps for editing.
I've been reading manuals and support forums for hours.
Does anyone have any advice or answers for such a problem?

Greetings from NTSC land! Welcome to the forums.
I have shot with the 200 but am no expert. So with that said here we go.
I do not think that it is possible to shoot 32 FPS in 24FPS mode. If you shot 32FPS then what you have is a 50FPS file with pulldown added. You can only shoot 24,oops, I mean 25 FPS natively. I believe that you will have to use Cinema Tools to conform,
BUT, as I said, I am no expert, with any luck Shane will drop by as the resident HVX200 evangelist and expert, and he can really help you!

  • DVCPRO HD 720P Capture File  Pixel Dimensions, etc.

I'm crossing over from Final Cut 7 where I've been using AJA LHi card to capture DVCPRO HD 720P 59.94 tape from the Panasonic 1400 deck successfully for years. In Premiere I've adjusted all the capture settings and sequence settings to conform to DVCPRO HD 720P 59.94:
-Pixel format: MC DVCPRO HD 720P 60
    -Capture format: AJA Mov Capture
    -Video format:  720P 59.94
    BUT....
-My Premiere capture tests look not only slightly horizontally stretched, but  cropped about 30 pixels only on the right of the full raster frame in both Premiere and in playback in Final Cut 7.  This is true for the clip as it plays on the timeline as well.
-When I launch the clip in QT player it has the same cropping problems but is playing as 960x720, not defaulting to 1280x720 as normal 16:9. Final Cut captured clips play in QT as default 1280x720. So the file as captured in Premiere is missing a tag that tells QT how to resize it. I'm in QT 10.4 by the way.
-I've imported captures from Final Cut into Premiere and they look fine.
-The Premiere captured clip in the bin shows as 960x720 which is correct for DVCPHD, but in parenthesis shows (1.3333) which I've never seen anywhere before.
-The folks at AJA think this is a Premiere issue not a capture card issue, and I tend to agree.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you

I'm wondering if what the original camera may have embedded into the file is jumbled in with the 1400 and "crashing into" what both FCP and PrPro expect to 'see'. From the above grab, PrPro is thinking that this is just a P2 format Panny camera, shooting "standard" P2 stuff. Which this clearly is not.
At this point ... wondering is say Kevin-Monahan could jump in here & provide some assistance? At least, he'd know who to talk with about this. So might shooternz ... he's been around this sort of thing for many years.

  • Prorez 422 vs DVCPro HD for capture

I am producing a television show and need to decide on a capture codec. Does it make a difference in capturing between Prorez 422 or DVCPro HD? I will be doing a lot of keying and intense colors as the show is for children. Also some CGI for backgrounds. I know you can convert the codec but is there an advantage in capturing in one or the other. I am shooting with Panasonic HVX200 output from the uncompressed HD component out.
    Thanks,
    David Perry

I like ProRes. It is nice, but you may find certain 10bit rendering errors with FCP that don't show up in 8bit CODECs. Alpha channels from still graphics seem to be the worse problems. Also some of the transparency modes don't really work right in 10bit. This isn't really the fault of the ProRes CODEC, but appears to be a problem with FCP 6 and all 10 color spaces.
If you don't plan many transparent graphics, ProRES is awesome and I would recommend you use if if you have an uncompressed feed coming from the camera.
I would only recommend ProRes if you have AJA Kona hardware. Only the top Kona cards seem to support it fully. My LHe card supports it but most io devices don't.
The color space of the ProRes is very very nice. I've pushed a scene from a Varicam (captured via SDI into the Kona) by about 3 stops recently and was able to recover it without anybody knowing. It was slightly more grainy, but still very usable. DVCPro would not have taken this kind of abuse.

  • Panasonic AJ-D250 VTR

Wonder if the Panasonic AJ-D250 DVCPRO VTR will ever work with FCP5 in the future. What a shame that a $7000 VTR was made useless by a software upgrade.

  • DVCPro HD frame rate issues

I'm sure that this question has been asked before, but I performed a couple searches and couldn't find a thread to perfectly answer it.
I have a tape that was shot (with the Pansasonic HDX900, shot to tape and not P2) at two formats, 720/24P and 720/60P. Most of the tape was shot at 24P, but the cameraman shot a few minutes shot at 60P to create slow motion. Both 24P and 60P are on the same tape. I am capturing directly from the camera, not from a deck. I have a couple issues:
1.) My device control through FCP does not seem to be working, so I can only capture with "capture now." My device control setting seems to be right (DVCPro Firewire), and I've tried to restarting FCP and the camera. It doesn't seem like this is a trash-the-prefs issue, so does anyone have any thoughts? I have driven the camera's deck through FCP before.
2.) What is the best way to work with the different frame rates? Right now it captures at 60P no matter which capture setting I have it set at (when shot at 24P it duplicates frames to make it 60P). Is this a result of mixing formats on the same tape?
    I'm a little lost, thanks.
    Stef

It doesn't have that function and after consulting the manual (again) I am beginning to believe that playback control is only possible internally to the camera, rather than externally from another device. It doesn't explicitly state this, but the manual DOES specifically mention the record start/stop functions but has no mention of playback start and stop.
That said, the larger issue at the moment and for the future is the frame rate issue.

  • HDCam Settings - Capture Issues

    Hello!
I am using a really nice setup. Sony -H3 SDI to a Kona 3 breakout box into a G-5. RAM is too little but... Shooting full HD Cam and trying to bring it in. Everything seems to be hooked up properly as I can move the cursor and control the deck the viewing monitor displays the same as the Apple monitor so all of that seems fine.
I was setting FCP capture settings @ 1080i 29.97 however. I did shoot this last 3 month project on DROP Frame so I re-did the little box in the preferences.
Goes to prepare to capture and this instead... Still getting the same message:
Warning: A timecode break was encoutnered while capturing. You MUST relog these clips and recapture them without timecodes breaks. Timecode breaks will cause all subsequent instances of a clip to have unreliable timecode.
The red bar is across the clip in the bin... I did turn off all the guarding factors in the control panel to get one in. It looks like caca...

    Hi Shane and Mike again!
Shane I am a Birder/Biologist turned cameraman/ and Producer. Actually, Ron Tobias had me help acquire the first round of equipment from Sony and then..... So for over 15 years I have been hanging in and doing pretty well at times But there are HUGE holes in my knowledge of many areas. This doe not exend to birdlife. However, I am not an editor and many things in and around this area are still very confusing.... so with that ...
Codec? What is a codec? I am using the supplied software from Kona and Final Cut. I have fooled in User settings and also in the Easy Setup and then the Audio Video settings control panel. By changing the selections, in the menus, am I changing the codec?
Because the picture looks perfect and playback shows no problems I was setting for 1080i 29.97 10 bit uncompressed but have since been fooling with this especially. Trying to get the buttons and checked boxes correct. Is this the codec?
In the user preferences: I have UNCHECKED : Abort ETT/PTV on dropped frames AND
    Abort capture on dropped frames.
This is how I got the ONE clip in to the bin without the red bar across it. But it looks very jerky and weird on playback in the FCP viewer window.
In the EASY setup it shows the Aja Kona 3-1080i 29.97 10 Bit uncompressed. Device is with Kona and using Sony VTR B. It is what came up originally when Kona did the initial device scan settings.
I can go through each line under that if I need to.
In capture settings the same except DROP FRAME 30 MODE is selected . I am still getting issues and it will not capture anything with error reading Drop Frames detected During Capture..... Yes , that is how it was shot. So how are you guys getting around this of what settings do I have that are wrong?
HOwever, in the deck display is showing T*R indicating that Time Code is not reading correctly. I may be also having issues here.
So have you guys found that some of the issues are based upon the DVW-730 time code recording problems??? Again, completely normal record mode setting using 3- 5 second buffer almost always and having Drop Frame selected internally. I can call SONY on Monday if this is still going on.
Any advise to get UNSTUCK would be Truly Appreciated.
Can I simply get around this by hooking up a Firewire cable directly into the G5 from the J-H3??
I hope I ma aswering the necessary questions.

  • DVCPro 50 - Drives, Capture

Hi - I am preparing to digitize footage for a project I shot on the Panasonic SDX900, DVCPro50, 24p(regular), 16x9.
I have about 40 hours of footage and will upconvert the 30-40 minute final film.
I am planning to rent a SD93 deck to capture the footage which I will work with roughing out scenes for the next month or so and then will transfer the material to a beefier system for a real editor to work with. I've never worked with DVCPro50 footage before and would love advice on how to bring it in, drives to use, etc. I'm a director, not an editor, but I like to do my own logging and often rough out scenes or sometimes have small projects that I do all the editing on my PowerBook G4, firewire drives (1 Firewire 800 port and1 400 port that share the same bus), and a DVCam deck. For this project I was planning to buy a couple of drives and upgrade from FCP HD 4.5 to 5, but am not itching to buy a new computer though if that makes way more sense, I could probably justify it. I imagine in the not too distant future I'll be working with HD, though at the moment, I'm not.
    So, my questions are:
1)Should I bring the footage in SDI or Firewire, what is the difference?
2)If I use SDI, does that mean bringing it in uncompressed? 10-bit/8-bit?
    3) Drives? How much space? Internal SATA, external SATA, Firewire, Raid, I'm confused.
Are these a good choice? http://www.caldigit.com/FirewireVR.asp
4)For FCP presets, should I use:
    capture - DV50 NTSC 48kHz anamorphic
    sequence setting - DV50 NTSC 48KHz 23.98
    5) I'll need to output sample footage during the edit, will that be a problem if we no longer have the SD93 deck, or can I just burn dvd's as I usually do with my DVCam projects?
Many thanks to anyone who takes the time to wade through these questions, I've tried to do my due diligence finding answers in previous posts, but come up still confused. Best, Megan

1)Should I bring the footage in SDI or Firewire, what is the difference?
Yes, it may be better in many ways. I'm sure you can capture it in 8 bit uncompressed staying digital with your friends system.
2)If I use SDI, does that mean bringing it in uncompressed? 10-bit/8-bit?
    8 bit
    3) Drives? How much space? Internal SATA, external SATA, Firewire, Raid, I'm confused.
Raid a least 2 together if you can. Raid 0

4)For FCP presets, should I use:
    capture - DV50 NTSC 48kHz anamorphic
    sequence setting - DV50 NTSC 48KHz 23.98
This depends on if you are pulling out the 3/2 pulldown and this is an area for others to help you with.
    5) I'll need to output sample footage during the edit, will that be a problem if we no longer have the SD93 deck, or can I just burn dvd's as I usually do with my DVCam projects?
DVD for sample footage should be great from this SD project.
If you plan on going HD you will want better equipment.
    Good Luck
