PDF - TIFF

Hi,
I have a problem with finding a java-library, which will support conversion from PDF-files to Tiff files. Know somebode of such library?
Thanks a lot.
Andrea.

itext?
I think it supports constructing PDF documentsmanually or from images, but it doesnt do
vice-versa.
Does itext support it?Itext cannot be used to read the Pdf, which is
necessary to convert, as it lacks an OCR engine.
Think your gonna have to fork out for some OCR
software.converting to a jpeg does not require an OCR engine.

  • Automator - Change Image Type - Multiple page PDF- TIFF conversion

I was able to do this on a friend's computer (not sure which version of OS X they were running), but this seems impossible on Snow Leopard.
I need to convert hundreds of multiple page PDFs to TIFFs. I can't get this to work, and the Change Image Type option only lists single page PDF conversion. I could separate PDFs into multiple files, convert to TIFFs, but then I don't know how to recombine a bunch of TIFF pages into a larger file. From google searches, I know this is possible using tiffutil, but I don't really understand how to use that well, and I really need an automatic process.
I'm at my wits end with this, because I did it just last week on someone else's computer and it was easy as pie. Why can't you convert multiple page PDFs in Snow Leopard?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I just tried this - two problems.
It creates a separate tiff document for each page of the input pdf.
Also, this action is just annoying because it results in randomly named files in some temp folder that i can only locate using the reveal finder item action. I know I can rename files in automator, but I'd really like to have the output file have the same name as the input file.
It confuses me why they would remove this functionality in Snow Leopard.

  • PDF, TIFF, JPG, what should I format it as?

Ok. I am a student and I just picked up my books for the coming year. Wow, are they heavy.
This may sound like a big undertaking, but I was thinking, why not scan all of the pages I will need into my computer, so I can leave the book at school? (I'll ask my teachers what chapters we will need).
    1. How would I go about doing thisS? Should I use a digital camera or should I scan each page in?
    2. What shoud I format them as? PNG? How would I go about doing this? Keep in mind I would like to keep each chapter together and easily switch pages.
    3. Anything else I'm forgetting?
I really appreciate your help. I know it may seem like quite a question, but I really do want to do this. Thanks!

DigiCam would probably be faster than scanning, since there's little wait between pictures and flipping the pages will be much easier. The downside of course is quality and readability unless you put the camera on a tripod at fixed focus.
For better results, though it will be substantially slower and more involved, particularly if you're going to be doing a lot of pages, you could scan the files. If you wanted to be able to search the text, save as PDF and run each page through OCR software. Otherwise, you could save as .jpg (or perhaps .png) which will usually be smaller.
Note: An OCRed pdf will be much smaller than a non-OCRed pdf because the data is text, rather than graphic, but the OCR process also adds to the processing time of each page.
In keeping chapters together, you can create multi-page pdfs or, if you choose to use an image format, name the files sequentially and file into folders for each book and chapter.

  • Can tiffs be 'embeded' in a PDF?

Can tiff images be included/embeded in a PDF, without them being automatically/internally converted to jpeg?
The reason I ask, is becuase I would like to make a PDF for repro but I do not want to use jpegs.
If the answer is 'no' then are there any other ways of providing a PDF for repro, that prints using the tiff originals?
    Many thanks for any pointers/help.
    Grant

By default, monochrome Tiff files are convered to JBIG2 (lossless). Grayscale and Color tiff files are converted to JPEG, medium quality. You can change this in preference panel - Edit>Preferences->Convert to PDF->Tiff->Edit Settings and as Dave suggested, use a lossless format (zip or JPEG2000 lossless) or higher quality JPEG

  • SIPS: convert PDF to TIFF

I'm not sure whether this is the correct location for posting this, but anyway:
I want to convert a PDF to TIFF, using SIPS.
Unfortunately, and I think I understand why, SIPS cannot detect the resolution of a PDF, and defaults to 150 dpi.
So, when I want to convert a PDF of which I know that the images are 300 dpi, to a 300 dpi TIFF, SIPS interpretes the PDF and than scales it up to 300, effectively just doubling pixels and blurring the image.
Is there a way of telling SIPS that my PDF is of a high enough resolution?
I hope someone can help me here.
    Regards

  • Custom book export resolution problem in PDF - only 150DPI!?

I've been using the custom book option and when it came to exporting my PDF I have run into a problem involving the undocumented output resolution of a PDF at a given size. The custom book dialog allows you to create a book with a certain size in inches, but this really has no real meaning since the resolution of that output cannot also be specified in either the layout option or the print dialog. For example is it 150dpi or 300dpi? From some investigation it appears to be locked at 150DPI.
Now I would have thought that Aperture was intelligent enough to just treat the album layout (this is my assumption) as some kind of smart object, where the layout is resolution independent and the final output resolution can be determined when printing to a printer or PDF. In that case the dialog for the setup of the custom size is correct. However, there is no option that I can see in the print dialog to actually specify the output resolution; Aperture is left to its own devices to specify an output resolution, which is undocumented.
I use a printer that accepts JPG or TIF files and I need 300dpi for an album size of 10x13 inches. This equates to 3900x3000 pixels per page. I am able to export to PDF in the print dialog and then used an automator action to export each page of the PDF as JPG and reimported back into Aperture 2 in the same action. In the PDF>JPG conversion option there is the ability to set the DPI to 300. That works fine and the resulting JPG images show as 300dpi (3900x3000px). When looking at the images though they look a little soft, which leads me to believe that my action was simply interpolating a 150dpi image in the PDF into 300dpi.
So to test this, I noticed that if I exported just one page of the album as a PDF and opened the PDF in Preview it does indeed tell you that it is 13x10 inches (no mention of the pixel resolution though). So, you can actually reimport a single page PDF into Aperture and if you do this it appears that the actual resolution is 1950x1500 and that equates to 150dpi for a 13x10 inch layout.
So there are two things that could possibly be going on here:
    1. The actual layout of the album is locked at 150DPI and the save to PDF simply takes that and exports a PDF at that resolution.
    2. The layout of the album is resolution independent, the size of the album (in the custom dialog) simply controls the aspect of the page layout, and the print dialog (save to PDF) is exporting as 150DPI as default. When I run my automator action (these are the Leopard PDF actions), the save each page to JPG action is up-res'ing the image to 300dpi.
This is where I need help. Is 1 or 2 (or something else?) happening. Also, does the PDF save as JPG12? That too is undocumented.
If number 1 is happening I may have to set my album size to 26x20inches to get a 10x13 inch page at 300dpi.
If number 2 is happening I need to find a PDF/TIFF/JPEG print driver to enable me to export at 300dpi as the print dialog in not standard (and we don't get the nice 'save as' drop down where we could do other things. So far my search has led me to CUPS-PDF, but that still doesn't allow for resolution to be set: http://www.codepoetry.net/projects/cups-pdf-for-mosx
Why can't Apple just figure this thing out correctly and allow the resolution to be specified by the user - what an oversight given all of the feedback requests for the custom album tool. We need 300dpi as a minimum as we can always down-res if we want.
Any ideas? I've got albums to send to clients! Help!
    Thanks

When you import any PDF into Aperture, I think it rasterizes any PDF you import to a 150dpi flat image on import, even if it was a high res PDF to begin with. But theres the thing, PDFs don't have dpi (as such). Any shapes or text is a vector so don't have a DPI as they'll scale when printed. The images use their DPI when they were imported from the program that created the PDF.
So I did a quick test and put a page I made from Aperture in to Acrobat and ran a preflight check on all images to check the resolution. It came back at 349.956 ppi, so this example was over 350dpi.
    I've attached the screenshot

  • Cannot access pdf document with other software

hello had someone design something for my business they used adobe photoshop and the commercial printer cannot pull it off the cd to print it. I assume they are using differant software. Does anyone know how to fix this?

If they used Photoshop, there are more than a dozen different file types it could be:
    PSD
    JPG
    JPG2000
    GIF
    PNG
    PDF
    TIFF
    PIXAR
    BMP
    DCM
    IMG
    EPS
    PGA
    TCX
The list goes on, but unless it's BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG or PDF If you don't have Photoshop, you'll have a tough time opening it. If you cannot "pull it off" the CD, that's most likely an issue of the disc being "read only", but even them you should be able to copy the contents to your HD and open them from there.

  • Difference b/w eps/jpg/pdf

I work for a newspaper and for several months we have had sporadic issues when it comes to making our plates for the press. By issues, I mean those including pages that suddenly print upside down with the text appearing backwards and other instances where the text and images on a page are partially cut off or jagged.
Today I pin pointed the issue, discovering it had to do with the way some of our advertisements are being made in house.
It appears that when our ad designers go to a third party image site (Creative Outlet, which we subscribe to), they are sometimes downloading entire ads (which include several .eps files) and then pulling one piece of artwork from the ad to use in an entirely different ad.
I was able to locate a particular piece of said artwork that was utilized in one of our ads this past week. It was a .eps. I, instead, re-saved it as a .jpg, then relinked the file in Indesign, where our in-house ad had been built. I then exported as a .pdf and then placed that .pdf in our newspaper layout and exported the entire document to .pdf.
When we went to "roam" the page/pdf, the page was fine, except this ad did not have this piece of artwork showing.
I then went back and instead of exporting the ad as a .pdf, I exported it to .jpg. I then brought it into our newspaper layout, and exported it to .pdf.
When we roamed this page, the page was fine AND the ad now showed up in its entirety.
So, my question or questions, is/are:
    1. What are the differences between .eps and .jpg and why would their distinction have an effect on the RIP process or computer to plate process?
    2. What are the differences between .pdf and .jpg and why would their distinction have an effect on the RIP process or computer to plate process?
At the end of this, what I really just want to understand is why did the process I eventually came to (saving .eps file/artwork as .jpg, then after placing it in my ad document, exporting said document as a .jpg) work?

I can give you my non-expert opinion, and I'm sure that if I get something wrong, someone will be along shortly to correct me.
Jpeg (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a file format that uses a grid of pixels to represent an image, so it's a bitmap format. There are several bitmap formats that make them more or less useful in different circumstances. Because the amount of detail in a bitmap image is dependent upon the number of pixels it has, bitmap images can have very large file sizes.
One way to reduce the file size is through compression. Compression can be done by at least two methods: Lossy and Lossless. With lossless compression, contiguous ranges of same-colored pixels that may be described as white, white, white, white, white, black, black, white, black without compression can be described as 5-whites, 2-blacks, white, black with lossless compression. No data is lost, but the reading device needs to be able to read the compressed data and uncompress it.
The other way is called Lossless, in which groups of similarly-colored pixels are changed to a different color in order to create contiguous areas of same-colored pixels. So, if 100 was black and 0 was white (and numbers in between being shades of gray), you might get something like 100, 0, 100, 48, 49, 47, 48, 49, 100, 0, which when compressed might change to 100, 0, 5-47s, 100, 0, and the detail of the different colors is discarded from the file and lost (therefore, "lossy).
With Jpeg, there is also the matter of areas of high compression leaving visual artifacts, which can be seen in the cat image in the Wikipedia page on Jpegs that I linked to above. Many people feel that jpeg is useful for situations where you need smaller file sizes (like low-capacity cameras and slow-connection web viewing), but are not good for printing where file size may be less of a concern than image quality.
Tiff is a bitmap format that offers lossless LZW compression as an option, and Jpeg offers lossy compression that can be set on a scale from 0 to 12. The lower the number, the more data is lost.
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is PostScript code (PostScript was originally designed as a protocol for computers to talk to certain types of laser printers) that has been encapsulated with the addition of extra data in order to allow that code to be used as a graphic format. PostScript data can contain bitmap data as well as Vector data (describing shapes with points and connecting lines and curves rather than a grid of pixels). If an eps contains only bitmap data, there is little reason to save it as eps, because modern workflows don't benefit from anything that eps could add, and other formats are usually recommended instead. Even if you have vector and bitmap data in the same image, eps is considered an older format that is better to avoid. PDF Tiff and PSD (Photoshop Document) are formats that can contain vector data and bitmap data.
So, if your team are using eps files of whole ads, how are they doing it? Are they placing the eps into an image frame and using the frame's edges to crop out the unwanted areas? Are they opening the eps in another program and either cropping or removing parts of the ad and then saving? And if the latter, what editing programs are they using and what file format(s) are they saving as? As far as the images shifting, there could be reasons why it's doing that, but I could only speculate without seeing your files and your workflow, which I can't really do over a forum.

  • TIFFs vs PSDs for poster design

    Hi,
I am designing a poster where I have received the original photos I need to use as tiffs. In order to use them for the poster design, the only "editing" that really needs to be done to them is to select the outline of someone's body in each pose and get rid of the white space around them by applying a mask.
Should I be saving the end result of removing the white space using a PSD? Or a TIFF?...maybe an LZW TIFF? Interestingly, although TIFFS are supposed to be bigger, in the one photo I've completed so far, the LZW TIFF was smaller than the PSD by about 5 MB.
If it makes a difference, I'm going to be designing the poster in InDesign, and there are 37 of these photos I'm going to need to use. I want to make sure I have the ability to go back and edit if I want to change something once in InDesign (which I know is possible with PSDs) but also appears to be possible with TIFFs too.
Thanks very much for your help.

Actually it does if you are designing with live type layers in Photoshop.
Type elements can print better in InDesign if you save from Photoshop as PDF.
Create a 1"x1" 72 PPI Photoshop document with type. Save copies as PDF, TIFF, and PSD. Place all in InDesign at 600% scale and check the output. Live text in the PDF scales while InDesign uses the lesser raster composite of TIFF and PSD.

  • Lien Inter-PDF

    Bonjour,
