Perform search and replace in a custom command?

Hello,
Does anyone know how to perform a search and replace for selected text in a custom command?
My specific dilemma is this: I have a large document containing [very poorly formatted] songs. For example:
<p>Verse1 Verse1 Verse1 Verse1 Verse1</p>
<p>Verse1 Verse1 Verse1 Verse1 Verse1</p>
<p>Verse1 Verse1 Verse1 Verse1 Verse1</p>
<p>Chorus Chorus Chorus Chorus</p>
<p>Chorus Chorus Chorus Chorus</p>
<p>Chorus Chorus Chorus Chorus</p>
<p>Verse2 Verse2 Verse2 Verse2 Verse2</p>
<p>Verse2 Verse2 Verse2 Verse2 Verse2</p>
<p>Verse2 Verse2 Verse2 Verse2 Verse2</p>
<p>Verse3 Verse3 Verse3 Verse3 Verse3</p>
<p>Verse3 Verse3 Verse3 Verse3 Verse3</p>
<p>Verse3 Verse3 Verse3 Verse3 Verse3</p>
I would like to be able to select all the text in a verse and run my custom command on it that would remove the "<p>" and replace "</p>" with "<br />".
Thanks,
Kelso

replaceAll method in String is available only from 1.4 onwards.
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/api/java/lang/String.html#replaceAll(java.lang.String, java.lang.String).
You could use a method to search and replace a String with another...
public String replace (String source, String search, String replace) {
    StringBuffer result = new StringBuffer();
    int start = 0;
    int index = 0;
    while ((index = source.indexOf(search, start)) >= 0) {
      result.append(source.substring(start, index));
      result.append(replace);
      start = index + search.length();
    result.append(source.substring(start));
    return result.toString();
}

  • Batch File Search and Replace a String

    I've written a batch file to handle the copying of files.  I'm trying to reduce the number of parameters that I pass to the batch file.
    I want the batch file to perform a string replace on the directory path that is passed as a parameter to the batch file.
    Here is how I run the batch file:
    COPY_FILE.BAT C:\DATA\FTP_DATA\ACME\IN      (I'm passing directory path "C:\DATA\FTP_DATA\ACME\IN" as parameter %1)
    So my batch file will copy a file to the directory path represented by parameter %1.
    But then I want the file copied to a second directory.  I want the batch file to replace string "FTP_DATA" in the directory path with string "FTP_DATA\ARCHIVE"
    I know I could pass this path as a second parameter, but I want to limit the number of parameters so figured I could have the batch file perform a search and replace on string "FTP_DATA".
    After searching the internet, I thought I found the answer by using the following command in the batch file:
    set ARCHIVE_PATH=%1:FTP_DATA=FTP_DATA\ARCHIVE
    But it doesn't perform a search and replace.  It just appends to the directory path with the following result:
    C:\DATA\FTP_DATA\ACME\IN:FTP_DATA=FTP_DATA\ARCHIVE
    What I want is the this:
    C:\DATA\FTP_DATA\ARCHIVE\ACME\IN
    Any suggestions?

    Your syntax is not correct. Example:
    @echo off
    setlocal enableextensions
    set ARCHIVE_PATH=C:\DATA\FTP_DATA\ACME\IN
    echo %ARCHIVE_PATH%
    set ARCHIVE_PATH=%ARCHIVE_PATH:FTP_DATA=FTP_DATA\ARCHIVE%
    echo %ARCHIVE_PATH%
    endlocal

  • Photos moved from an external HDD to another: Search and replace paths?

    Hi everyone,
    I've been using iPhoto for a few years now and today I have iPhoto '09. I never let iPhoto copy my photos in its library when importing them, since I have most of them stored on an external hard drive. (Also, if the folders within the library would be properly dated like "2008-09-07" and not named like "7-Sep-2008" and "8-Apr-2008" making the former getting listed before the later, and if I could easily manage external volumes, I would be happy. But, I suppose that's a job for Aperture or Lightroom.)
    I have moved my photos from a small 160GB external hard drive to a new 2TB external hard drive. The problem right now is most of my photos in iPhoto can no longer be displayed. It offers me the option to locate a file every time I open a photo, which I can do, but doing the same task for each and every picture among thousands is daunting.
    To manage photos not stored within its library, iPhoto creates an alias to each picture file. I found a Bash script allowing me to perform a search and replace on all symbolic links in a specific directory. However, the problem is aliases are not the same as symbolic links.
    Is there any way for me to perform a search and replace on all the aliases within the iPhoto library in order to make them point to the new hard drive now containing the pictures?
    By the way, I'm also having a similar problem with iTunes:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2190505

    This issue is the main reason why I never recommend a Referenced Library. Some folks have had success using an app called _[File Buddy|http://www.skytag.com/filebuddy]_ to reconnect the aliases. If that fails then I'm afraid then you will find yourself reconnecting them manually.
    Running a Managed Library this issue simply doesn;t arise. And of course, you can easily run a Library from an external disk and easily move Libraries between disks.
    Should you wish to consider converting from a Referenced to a Managed library, then AliasHerder is an application that will replace these aliases with the actual files, and so preserve your Library and all your work in it. As always: back up first.
    How iPhoto names the folders within the Library Package is irrelevant as you never access them that way.
    There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 and later*
    You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and later* ...
    Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
    To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    *If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
    For users of 10.6 and later:
    You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
    For Users of 10.4 and later:
    Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Global search and replace on large-scale multi-user sites

    Is there a way for Dreamweaver to select only the files that
    are found when using the find and replace facility? This would make
    updating large websites a lot easier.
    From time to time I need to perform small changes to text or
    code (that obviously is not contained in an include file or library
    item) sitewide. As the site is administered by multiple users, it
    uses the check-in/check-out system, which means that before editing
    a file, it needs to be checked out. Thus, we can't just use search
    and replace directly, we have to check out the relevant files
    before performing the replace routine. The problem is selecting
    only those files which will be affected by the search and replace
    (and perform the operation in minutes) rather than selecting
    everything (and spending hours).
    Since it seems one is unable to select only files that appear
    in the search results, I have to manually identify the folder that
    holds the files with the results, and then check it out. As the
    files which need to be edited might be scattered around the whole
    site, this often means that I have to check out whole folders close
    to the site root. The check-out command will include everything in
    a folder, and the site contains thousands of files (which has to be
    checked back in afterwards), so obviously this is a heavy and
    time-consuming operation.
    Does anyone know if DW has a way of selecting only the
    relevant documents, or have suggestions for other ways of doing
    this? I get the feeling that this is most easily achievable by
    using tools outside DW, but I hesitate to go outside DW since it
    would interfere with DW's site managment system.

    I don't think you will find anyone here with such experience,
    not the least
    reason being that Library items run out of useful steam at
    about 100 pages.
    To use them on larger sites is just too tedious and risky,
    honestly. Is
    there any possibility to change to server-side includes?

  • How do I search and replace for invisibles in Pages 5.5.2?

    Three related problems all involving search and replace for invisibles.
    1. A block of text where all double returns need to become single returns.
    2. A block of text where all returns need to be replaced with a single word space.
    3. A block of text where all double word spaces to be replaced with a single word space.
    Pages 09 could do all three this handily. How can these be done in Pages 5.5.2?
    Appreciated.

    Here are screenshot of my attempts to make reducing double returns to one. First up selection of a double return:
    Copy to the clipboard. Do a Command-F. Here's the resulting dialogue:
    I paste in the contents of the clipboard:
    Note the Search field no longer has an empty slot selected. Something is clearly in there, but no instance of whatever is has been found. Nevertheless, I proceed to set up the Replace field by selecting a single return:
    Copy that to the clipboard and paste into the Replace field:
    Nothing to search for and therefore nothing to replace. Am now wondering what that little scoop to the right of the eyeglass icon might indicate. Clicking on it reveals this:
    Definitely not "a solution that just works."

  • How do I search and replace in comments in Acrobat XI?

    I use a Mac and just downloaded Acrobat Pro XI specifically to search and replace phrases in comments in a large PDF. According to this Adobe Help page, I should be able to do this: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/searching-pdfs.html I copied the relevant section below and marked with ***. However, I don't see I don't see an arrow for the options that would allow me to include comments. I understand how to include the comments with advanced search, but I want to also replace text. I also checked in preferences and searched the forums. Could someone please advise and maybe include a screenshot, if possible. Thanks!
    Choose Edit > Find (Ctrl/Command+F).
    Type the text you want to search for in the text box on the Find toolbar.
    To replace text, click Replace With to expand the toolbar, then type the replacement text in theReplace With text box.
    (Optional) Click ***the arrow ***next to the text box and choose one or more of the following:
    Whole Words Only
    Finds only occurrences of the complete word you type in the text box. For example, if you search for the word stick, the words tick and sticky aren’t found.
    Case-Sensitive
    Finds only occurrences of the words that match the capitalization you type. For example, if you search for the word Web, the words web and WEB aren’t found.
    Include Bookmarks
    Also searches the text in the Bookmarks panel.
    ***Include Comments***
    Also searches the text of any comments.

  • Search and Replace in Pages 5

    Search and Replace in Pages is now seriously regressive. Previously I could search for "invisibles" in a document and globally replace the search "invisible" by a replace one. Now I can't find a way of doing that. Any suggestions?

    Try this:
    Turn on Show Invisibles in the View menu.
    Select (highlight) the double para breaks.
    Use Command-E  (Find using selected text).
    Open the Find dialogue box (Command-F) and select Find & Replace.The selected para breaks will be in the Find text entry box, but will not be visible!
    Click in the Replace text entry box.
    Select (highlight) a single para break.
    Go to the Edit menu / Find and select 'Use selection for replace' (it will not show in the Replace entry box).
    In the Find & Replace dialogue box, click on the Forward or Back arrows to highlight the selected items (e.g. double para break) where you wish to start replacing in the document.
    Use the Replace All / Replace & Find / Replace buttons as per usual.
    Not a nice solution, but I hope it gets you going until Apple restores the previous functionality!

  • How Do I Mass Search and Replace Swatch Colors In Entire Indesign CS6 Document?

    I've jumped from CS4 to CS6 and its been a little while since, but just trying to refamiliarize myself with the many Features of Indesign CS6.
    Here's my issue: I have a really old CS4 document I've opened up and saved in CS6. I have to change all swatch colors throughout the document from pantone swatch 295 C to updated pantone swatch 293 C.
    Question, without my having to go through the entire document one object at a time looking for each object, HOW do i perform a Mass search and replace of Color swatch references from 295 C to 293C.
    I thought i could just click swatch properties and update the color... but No... that doesnt work as swatch properties is just grayed out
    I'm sure i've overlooked something but a refresher on how to mass find and replace color in a document would be great.
    Thanks and looking forward to hearing from someone.

    Thanks for the tips.... both seem like good options without my having to purchase a 3rd party software to accomplish this...
    I must admit... Because I've been stuck in Web Design and Motion Graphics for the past couple of years, when I re-opened my old print work from the CS4 days into CS6 it is obvious I have some catch up to do....
    I was almost embarrassed to admit I had forgotten the technique of Alias one color to another using Ink Manager... I had to look it up and found this helpful tutorial http://indesignsecrets.com/alias-one-color-swatch-to-another.php
    Thanks for both solutions....

  • JS InDesign Server CS2 - Search and Replace

    I am struggling to get a search and replace script to work on InDesign Server CS2.
    This works on my Desktop CS2:
    app.documents[0].search('xxx', false, false, 'yyy');
    but not through InDesign Server CS2.
    Can any one please help.
    Thanks
    Simon Kemp

    Thanks for all of the replies.
    This situation is that the company I work for has decided to consolidate some of the duties of our graphics departments.  People in one location will be dummying documents for people at another location.
    The paths to the images are UNC paths, which means they're pointing to different shares on different servers.  This cannot be changed.
    Also, the images at either location may not exist until days after the dumming process.
    During the dummying process, the application that's used to build the pages places empty ad boxes (placeholders) on the page.  The placeholders are text frames.
    I don't understand in what way, but the paths to the images are hidden inside the InDesign file.  From the users' standpoint, the placeholders simply display basic information about the ad (customer name, ad number, etc.) and hold the position for the images that will be placed later.
    It is not using script labels to apply the paths.
    So, this is why I describe the problem as needing to do a search and replace inside the InDesign file.
    As I mentioned before, I know this is doable.  I think I now see that the problem problem is figuring out how these hidden paths are being applied in the document.  My only thought was script labels, but this is not the case...

  • Is there any "Search and Replace" option in Crystal Reports?

    Is there any option to search and replace in Crystal Reports. Since i am using a name in many of the formulas in crystal reports. I need to replace with the desired name on the go.
    Could anyone help me on this....

    Search & Replace across formulas is not available in CR XI but is available in CR 2008.  Here is an excerpt from the CR 2008 Users Guide:
    Searching for formula text
    You can use the Find dialog box to carry out a number of different activities:
    u2022 Search for text or characters in the Field, Function, or Operator trees.
    u2022 Search for text or characters that you want to mark or replace in the
    formula, Custom Function, or SQL Expression that you have open.
    u2022 Search for text or characters across all SQL Expressions in a report.
    u2022 Search for text or characters across all formulas and Custom Functions
    in a report.
    When you search for text across all formulas, the results appear in a pane
    at the bottom of the Formula Workshop. (You can dock the results pane in
    other locations). When you click an item in the results pane, Crystal Reports
    opens the appropriate formula and highlights the matching text.
    Tip: You can open the Formula Workshop to search across all formulas
    from the Field Explorer and from the body of a report. To do this, select a
    formula field, right-click it, and choose the "Find in Formulas" option.

  • GUI Based tool for search and replace using regular expression

    Hi,
    I have developed this small tool which can be used for search and replace in multiple files using reqular expressions.
    Features:
    1. Full regular expression
    2. GUI based with Highlighted results
    3. Preview for replace available
    4. Pure Java based.
    5. Its like unix sed and grep
    Please visit below site for download/more information :
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/regexsearchrepl/
    Thanks,
    Hitesh Viseria

    I agree with you, it cannot compete grep/sed/awk combination. I couldnt find anything even close to grep/sed for windows which will also have a preview and most important, free. That is what made me write this tool. I am trying to
    improve its performance and more features like history etc.
    Any suggestions on additional features are most welcome.

  • Search and replace for Unicode characters

    Hello,
    I have a function which searches and replaces characters on file. It works with ASCI sharacters, but not when the strings which needs to be replaced contains Unicode ('á', 'ā') etc.  The source file is codding
    utf8 .
    $file = "file.txt"
    $SearchReplace = @($file)
    #Process files by performing a search and replace
    foreach ($file in $SearchReplace)
    #Select-Object -Skip 1 |
        (Get-Content $file) |
            Foreach-object { $_ -replace 'unicode_string' , ';'   } |
         out-file -encoding Unicode $file
    How to get working the search (and replace) function with Unicode characters?
    Thanks!

    No. it does not. I have verified that script does not recognize the diacritic
    ('á',
    'ā') characters when at all the operations with the files I have specified encoding utf-8/Unicode.

  • Search and replace selected text

    Is there a way to have search and replace only look in selected text and not the whole document? My problem is, e.g., in a table, the author used x's instead of checkmarks (our preferred). In Word I could highlight the text, search for X to replace with T (which I then set as WP Iconic font to show the T as a checkmark), then tell it to change all, and the x's would be corrected. I can't find that same command in InDesign and, therefore, have to go through each table and replace the X with a T.
    Also, is there a way to assign the first rows of an existing table as header (repeating) rows? I know how to tell it I want two header rows, but it creates new rows and I have to copy my text into the "header" rows.
    Thanks for all the help I get here!

    Both are actually easy to find in the online help ...

  • Search And Replace Patter VI

    I'm struggling with using the search and replace patter to replace a number of substring matches within a string, can anyone help and tell me what am I doing worng? Not an expert in regexps
    I'm basically trying to replace all the matches for "NONE","none" or "normal" with "OK within the "1NONE2none3normal4" string
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    From the help on for the "Match Patern" VI: "This function is similar to the Search and Replace Pattern VI. The Match Pattern function gives you fewer options for matching strings but performs more quickly than the Match Regular Expression function. For example, the Match Pattern function does not support the parenthesis or vertical bar (|) characters." The "Search and Replace Pattern.vi" uses Match Pattern internally.

  • Catalog manger "search and replace " using xml script

    Hi ,
    we have renamed 6 rpd columns names in rpd & alias is not removed yet .In catalog manager i can search and replace using string .But it takes lot time as they are stored in different reports , which are existing . I am trying to use xml script for replacing them.I got sample script from help file for single column . can anyone help for doing that for multiple strings.I will provide with my inputs .
    my inputs:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <actions>
    <action command="textReplace" oldValue="column 1 " newValue="column one" ignoreCase="true"/>
    <action command="textReplace" oldValue="column 2" newValue="column two" ignoreCase="true"/>
    <action command="textReplace" oldValue="column 3" newValue="column three" ignoreCase="true"/>
    </actions>
    please correct me .

    Given xml content looks okay but just in case check this oldValue="column 1 ", there is additional space at the end.
    I would suggest to extract Analysis report (.csv) using Catalog Manager and find out the list of reports based on those columns.
    This would help you learn with list of reports based on report owners, and then go for the fixing those reports.
    If you go by xml replace you never know the affected reports and you may not confirm until report owners come back to you with issues.
    This might take little bit time but your changes based on proper doc.
    Let me know updates, if helps mark
