Performance of BOEXI3.1 voyager member selector

Hi Sudipta,
IIF is one of the most popular MDX functions. Yet, it can cause significant performance degradation, which is often blamed on other parts of the system. Many times it is simple to rewrite the MDX expression to get rid of IIF altogether, and other times it
is possible to slightly change the IIF to increase performance.

In addtional, i'd suggest you enable SQL Sever profiler to monitor the queries fired by the process, once you find some queries took a very long time to run, consider creating the smaller cube partition or optimzing the query by adding index or
partition to improve the query performance. Here are some links about performance tuning.

  • Hiding Member from a member selector from users to access

    Hi Everyone,
Sorry if I am posting this in a wrong section
Actually I have one question regarding BO Voyager reports used created using OLAP cubes
I have one dimension / member selector in the report. In that member selector suppose there are some columns / dimension attributes / members are like Region, Project, Project State are there
Now in member region suppose there are 5-6 region like Asia, Europe, Africa etc
My requirement is I want to show the values to the user based on their region and they will not be able to see or select any other region other than his/her region
As part of its partial wok done I have already created folder against each region but in voyager report since there is o restriction they can view other region data which is a security issue
Can you help me on this asap
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Shane,
The Directory Integration User and API Guide has instructions for mapping users to roles. Depending upon your specific Import Person directory integration settings, you would generally not need to add these people one by one.
Typically, organizations set the events which trigger a user record refresh (Import Person) as part of their directory integration configuration. The available events are: Person Lookup for Order on Behalf, Person Lookup for Service Form; Person Lookup for Authorization Delegate. Check with your technical team to validate how this is currently configured for your site.

  • Webi 4.0 and BW Hierarchy Member Selector

    Hello,
We have recently installed Business Objects 4.0.2 and have some questions about Webi 4.0 and reports based on SAP BW via BICS.
    1. We have setup a BICS connection to a SAP BW query using the Information Design Tool and attempted to create a report on this connection.
    2. In the query report panel, we select a Cost Center hierarchy object, cost element hierarchy object and a key figure.  Next we click on the drop down arrow next to the hierarchy objects to see the members.
Unfortunately we do not see any members.  It says "No Values to Display".   If we search for the object via the text search, we can find objects that are selectable.  Also if we click "Select All', "All Members from [hierarchy] are selected.
    3. When we go to run the query and the parameters window appears, we can see the hierarchy fully exposed in the parameter pick list.  The report will run successfully and returns data.
Is this normal functionality where the member selector is empty?
We have run a security trace to see if we needed any extra rfc's or authorizations, and everything has appeared to pass.
Another test was completed where the entitlement user was also given All access to test, and it had no effect.
The user has been added to the administrator's group in Business Objects for full access as well.
    Any help would be great!

    Nick

    Hi Nicholas,
We are having exactly the same issue.  I do not think this is a normal behavior, because I have seen in the web many videos where the hierarchy is displayed completely.
Sorry that I cannot help any further, I am interested in your findings too.
    Kind regards,

  • Hierarchy selection missing in member selector with Excel 2013 and EPM SP21

    Hello all,
We have recently upgraded to excel 2013 and EPM SP21. While running a data manager package we are not getting an option for "hierarchy" view, only "list" view is available in member selector dialog box as shown below:
This clearly looks to be an issue with the upgrade as we never faced this earlier.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks,
    Dolly Katyal

    Look here:
    You have:
    Remove INPUT:
And you will have hierarchy view!

  • Report - EPM Member selector - using filter

    Hi ALL,
I would like to ask a general question : everytime I try to use <CONTEXT> value (within the "Member Selector" in the "Report Editor"), the selection doesn't work, my filter doesn't work ! Why ?
And then I obtain this error message :
How does it work ? What's wrong with my selection ? Is there some prerequisites to use it ?
Can someone help me on this, it's hard to find information regarding how to make reports !
    Thanks a lot !!!
    Karine

    Hi Roberto,
Thank you for your answer ! But this note doesn't solve the problem !
Would you mind trying this and tell me your results :
Make a simple report :TIME in column, ENTITY in page and COSTCENTER in row.
Then click on COSTCENTER, it opened the "EPM - Member Selector"
The dimension COSTCENTER has a property called ENTITY, so I select "ENTITY", operator is "=", Values is "<CONTEXT>" and the High Values/Dimensions is "ENTITY"
And after this selction I have nothing !
(I insist on that point to be clear : There are 2 different ENTITY, the first is the property of the dimension COSTCENTER and the second is a dimension)

  • Member selector hierarchy expansion

    Hi
We have a problem that when we open the member selector from context (or by clicking context member formula) in EPM 10 excel, we are not able to click on the + mark to expand the hierarchy.  This happens once in a while (randomly).  It would occur in all dimensions.  Only way to get out of the problem is to close excel and reopen again.  But after sometime we would again face the same issue.
We are on BPC 10 SP16.
    Detailed screen shots attached.
    Any inputs are really appreciated.

  • Member Selector In Crystal Reports For Enterprise

    Hi All
I am working with hierarchies within Crystal reports for Enterprise.  I am using a standard Bex query with the report, so the crystal report is not using an OLAP cube direct.  I am wanting to select all the dependants of a particular member within the hierarchical structure.  However I can only achieve this by individually selecting all the children of the members at each dependant node of the hierarchy.  Which is not ideal as this is effectively hard coding the hierarchy and the hierarchy will change in time and which means the report will have to be manually amended each time there is a change.  Therefore is it possible to select a member of a hierarchy and all its dependants so it will dynamically update the report with the changes.  I have read that this can be done in the metadata tab of the member selector, however this tab is not available to me as I am working indirectly off the cube, via a Bex query.
Any help with his will be hugely appreciated
    Thanks
    Neil

    Hi,
in crystal Reports for Enterprise you can put the hierarchy into the Result Objects. Then open the member selector.
Now do a right -click on the node and you can see there is the options for children and descendants
    that should help

  • No "select relationship" area under EPM member selector

According to SAP BPC 10.NW material, there should be a "select relationship" area under EPM member selector where you can define how to selection member. but I did not find it under our EPM member selector of EMP office add-on Excel. anybody know why?

    Hi,
I think you are checking under context member selector. Follow below steps to see the required option from member selector
Step 1: Create a report by using any of the following methods
**Creating reports using the EPM pane.
**Creating reports using the Report Editor.
**Creating reports directly in a sheet.
Step 2: Just click on any dimension wich has kept under either row or column axis
Then system would prompt you member selector window with "Selection Relationship", this member selector is different from context member selector.
    Hope it helps..

    Is it possible, How ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I know that i oculd slide and dice. but my need is to create Parent and son in drill down. It is possible in voyager (in help documentation and when i double click on a member i have a message that no child for the member)
SO i want to know is it possible to create a such link between member based on BW query or BW infocube.

  • Voyager Performance Issues

We are having slow response times with BO Voyager, I'm not sure if this is due to the distance between the client session (US) and the physical location of the Server (Europe). Has anyone else experienced this before?
Are there any general performance improvement measures that can be adopted/employed for Voyager as there doesn't seem to be any obvious measures that can be adopted?
Is the performance entirely dependent on the speed of the OLAP connections supporting the Voyager workspaces
    Thanks

    Hello Shariff
You don't mention what OLAP server you are using or any specifics about performance. Are your comments based on a comparison against another tool. The network distance won't help. However are all components located in Europe (OLAP server, BOE and MDAS) or just the OLAP server?
The following are general guidelines that we follow when tracking down performance issues. I am assuming you are using Microsoft Analysis Services.
Many of the performance issues raised against Voyager turn out to be problems with cube design. Microsoft has fairly extensive resources talking about best practices and performance tuning so it is always good to make sure customers are aware and are using these best practices. This post contains links to some of the resources:

As for the cube optimization, here's the advise from Microsoft about how to speed up the cube response time:
These are the two whitepapers that I recommend for background on performance tuning SSAS 2005:
u2022         [Identifying and Resolving MDX Bottlenecks|http://tinyurl.com/33uxob]: This was produced by the SQL Customer Advisory Team, with input from a variety of sources. This is very focused on query tuning. It will explain how to determine whether a bottleneck is in the storage engine (responsible for retrieving data from partitions and aggregations) or in the formula engine (responsible for pretty much everything else). It explains relevant information about these components and how they work, and provides guidance on tuning issues in either component. Frankly, tuning problems in the storage engine is a much simpler task than tuning problems in the formula engine.  <URL:  http://sqlcat.com/whitepapers/archive/2007/12/16/identifying-and-resolving-mdx-query-performance-bottlenecks-in-sql-server-2005-analysis-services.aspx >
u2022         [SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services Performance Guide|http://tinyurl.com/yr5hrv]: This predates the previous whitepaper and discusses performance more generally, including query and processing performance. It provides some very important guidance, especially with relation to cube design, that will help to achieve better performance with SSAS.
Once you identified the query that's running very slow, then download Microsoft Business Intelligence Developer Studio Helper ([http://www.codeplex.com/bidshelper |http://www.codeplex.com/bidshelper]) and MANUALLY modify the aggregation at the level that takes the longest time.  Here's the writeup from Microsoft about step-by-step guide to BIDS: <see attachment>.
Here is the general strategy we want to pursue to see if we can get Voyager to perform faster:
First it would be good to get a better quantification of the problem. For example are they experiencing Voyager being in general u201Cxu201D times slower than Excel or another BI tool? And does this mean:
u2022             Most operations in Excel take less than a second and most Voyager operations take 5 or 6 seconds
u2022             Operations that take 10 seconds in Excel take around about a minute in Voyager
u2022             Operations that take a minute in Excel take five or six minutes in Voyager
    u2022             All of the above
The first answer is most likely to be Voyageru2019s scalable N tier environment versus Excelu2019s 2 tier environment. The others more likely suggest problems with the way that Voyager is retrieving the data from the OLAP server. However, these are not hard and fast rules as the reason for a performance difference is often workflow specific.
The second step would be to do a sanity check on their environment. For example, make sure they havenu2019t deployed the web app server, mdas server on a VM machine with only 500 megs of ram. The things to check would be  CPU and memory usage:
    u2022             On the browser
u2022             On the web application server machine
    u2022             On the MDAS machine
u2022             On the Analysis Services machine (though this it could be assumed is OK if the performance of other tools is acceptable)
The objective here would be to see if they have an under resourced environment. Unfortunately we donu2019t have a Voyager sizing guide so I cannot give pro-active recommendations about what things should look like other than to say obvious things like u2018if your MDAS machine is running out of memory with one user you need more memoryu2019. Our very general comment is that one MDAS can support 15 queries.
The final step would be to identify any specific workflows that demonstrate the problem, in particular any workflows that demonstrate an extreme difference between Voyager and the other products, especially if itu2019s a high value workflow to the customer. The objective here would be to do some detailed profiling to see if there is an opportunity for a bug fix which could be released as a patch.
It would also be good to know which version Voyager they are using (which fix packs etc.), which browser they are using, and their deployment environment (OS, how many machines, CPU speed, memory). There are various fixes that give better performance for specific  workflows that have gone into Voyager over time, so (without specific knowledge of what the problems are) it would be great to see if an XI 3.1 version of Voyager meets their expectations.
General performance problems are unlikely to be fixed with bug fixes , and having a better system configuration will only take you so far before you hit the limits of what you can get out of an N tier system opposed to a 2 tier thick client one. Historically we have tended to find very specific problems which we were able to identify the root cause of and fix by issuing patches.
    I hope this helps somewhat.

  • How set current month in Voyager using BEX Query 7.0

    Hi:
I have a voyager workspace connected a SAP BI Query 7.0. My query shows information since 2007 to 2009
How I can set current month in characteristics defined in slice section? I tried to use a exit variable in proposed values query section but it doesn't works, when I use filter section in my BEX query it show only  information for 1 month.
    Thanks
    Marta Díaz

    Hi,
From the problem report i understand that you want to open the Voyager workspace with all the data, but want to analyze for only the current month.
You can achieve it in the following manner.
    a) Open the Voyager report.
    b) Click on the member selector of the slice.
    c) Deselect the default member and then select the current month.
    d) Click on OK button.
This should show you the data for only the current month.
If you want to make use of exit variable by using the SAP query designer then try using the current calendars month variable.
You can also refer from the discussion below in the thread to create a variable.
Dafault value previous month in BEx
    Hope this helps.

  • Analysis for OLAP - HANA - Performance Issue

    Hi Experts,
i have a performance issue using Analysis OLAP on HANA view: when i drag a dimension in the background section, is necessary to wait a lot of time and usually BI goes in error with timeout message.
The BI release is 4.1 SP4 and HANA is in SP7.
    Thanks.
    Andrea

    Hi Andrea,
That's a bit odd. How big is that dimension? As you know, when you add a dimension to the background it automatically opens the member selector allowing you to pick the appropriate members.
The member selector can be tuned by changing the properties of the MDAS service. If you look at section 7.7.1 in the Admin guide entitled "Maximum number of members returned when filtering", you'll see how to reduce the number of members returned. This may help with your issue.

  • Using member sorting and grouping with two reports sharing rows

    Hi!
I have a problem with one report and I need some help or advise here.
I have two dimensions with dynamic expansion in rows (PRODUCT, MATERIAL), and I use the option Member Sorting and Grouping at Member selector to obtain the total amount of PRODUCT group by PARENTH1:
    PRODUCT               MATERIAL          AMOUNT
    TOTAL PROD_A-X                                   100
    PROD_A_A             MAT1                          22
