Performance/timeout searching on Oracle Portal 9.0.4.1.0

Hi people
I have a customer with an application that among other things stores a database of articles from a weekly scientific magazine. As many scientific magazines articles from the same year are page numbered consecutively meaning that article #1 in the first issue starts with page #1 and so the page numbering continues all year.
I have a bunch of attributes on the article item such as:
Year
Volume
Issue
Page no.
Abstract
Title
Authors
When performing a search using the Custom Search Portlet and only specifying page no. the search times out after about 60 seconds. Performing af free text search runs in about 10 seconds. There are about 10.000 articles in the database each consisting of 2 custom item types.
The server setup is:
Infra: 3 GHz CPU, 4 Gb memory
Middletier: 3 GHZ CPU, 6 Gb memory
Should it not be possible to perform a search as described above or am I just overestimating the search engine i Oracle Portal?
The site can be seen here (all in danish tho): http://www.ugeskriftet.dk
The search page is here: http://lfappet.laeger.dk/portal/page?_pageid=33,14366310&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL
Please advice
Claus Jessing

Are you sure it is just the query, or is
overall performance an issue? The overall performance is most definately an issue. Maybe I'll get back to you when we have fixed that :-)
In regards to the indexes then we are using OracleAS Portal out of the box. Ie. WWSBR_CTX_THING_INDX, WWSBR_CTX_DOC_INDX etc. created using ctxcrind.sql. I have no control over the query as we are using the Custom Search portlet.

  • Performance Logging of OracleAS Portal

    Hello Everyone,
I want to turn on performance logging for my OracleAS Portal instance. I am referring README file. The Prerequisite for the same is that
Oracle Portal middle tier should be on following release:
    · 3.0.9(must be at patch set 3.0.9.8.3 or higher), 3.0.9.8.2 and previous versions are not supported.
    · 9.0.2.3 or higher.
Can anybody tell me, how can I check the release and patchset level for my Portal instance.
Secondly I have turn on the trace level to info in httpd.conf files and restart the OracleAS, but while trying to upload accesslog/errorlog into owa_perf schema through loadlogs.pl, no data is being uploaded. Any clue when I may be wrong?

  • Problem running Oracle Portal to Go (Oracle9i 1.0.2.0.0)

I have installed Oracle9i Application Server WE 1.0.2.0.0 Standard Edition on Windows2000 Professional Edition. I am getting problems regarding running Portal to Go.
The installer said that installation was successful. Moreover I have done the configuration tasks mentioned Oracle9i installation guide under post installation steps for Oracle9i.
But Oracle Portal to Go is not running and returning error message. Are there some other tasks still to perform to configure the Oracle Portal to Go Standard Edition?
Here it is a brief Description of what I have done with the installations process
System: Pentium II 500 MHZ with 256 MB RAM and 15 GB Hard Disk so enough space available for installations.
Windows 2000 professional was freshly installed
All pre installation tasks are done like paging file size is 896MB
Important Installation steps and points are as under (Standard Edition of Oracle 9i Application Server 1.0.2.0.0):
I followed all the steps given in Oracle 9i AS installation guide
On Windows 2000 Installer never asks for reboot before actually installing the Oracle 9i application server (Chapter 4 of installation guide: preparing system for installation: step5: page 5 of 25). So I manually reboot the system
During installation when I reached Database Access Descriptor (DAD) for Oracle Portal. In TNS connect string field for Apache listener Configuration I entered the same name (abc) (chapter 4 of installation guide: installing oracle 9i Application server: step2, 3: page 10,11 of 25) as I was going to use for my Global database name later at database Identification steps (chapter 4 of installation guide: installing oracle 9i Application server: step 4: page 12 of 25)
Note: In an other installation I left the same fields (TNS connect string) blank but of no use.
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
When installation of Oracle9i AS reaches 100% installer opens a command prompt and displays
    ORA: 12541 TNS: No Listener
    Enter user name:
When I enter SYSTEM as a user name it displays
    Password:
I entered manager as password and then it displays
    ORA 12560: TNSProtocol adaptor error
And once again it asks for user name and password
I once again enter system as a user and manager as password.
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
After 100% completion of the installation the configuration tools screen appears
(Chapter 4 of installation guide: installing oracle 9i Application server: step 10: page 17 of 25) and the following tasks are performed
    Net8 configuration Assistant succeeds
    Oracle database configuration assistant succeeds
When The Oracle portal 3.0 configuration Assistant Starts
I hold the installation steps for oracle portal for a while and do some database configuration tasks that are necessary (may be some are not) for installation of portal.
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
    For example
Increase the table space size of Users (400 MB), and Temp (100MB) table spaces.
Validated invalid PL/SQL Modules with ULTRP.SQL script
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
Installed dbms_job.sql package as it was mentioned in another guide (Oracle portal-to-Go installation Guide- Release1.0.2: Page 1: last line)
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
    Stopped the database and listener
And did some changes as was asked in Oracle portal-to-Go installation Guide- Release1.0.2
Edited the init<SID>.ora file and set the following fields
    aq_tm_processes = 1
job_queue_processes = 4 (2 were recommended in guide but I left the already set values)
    job_queue_interval = 30
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
Also I did the following too (though these are recommended for Internet file system)
opern_cursors = 300 (in installation guide it is asked 255 but I kept the already set value)
shared_pool_size = 52438800 (50M was suggested and this is more than that)
    processes = 200
(Please let me know if I have made any mistake here)
I started the database and listener
Proceeded the installation of Oracle Portal as is described in installation guide for Oracle 9i Application guide 1.0.2.0.0
And successfully completed the installation of Oracle Portal
There were no errors reported on the installer however when I read the installation log some errors were mentioned at the end of the file
Please see the attached log file.
I also completed all the post installation tasks at the end of chapter 4 of Oracle9i Application Server installation guide 1.0.2.0.0 except the configuration of Oracle Internet file system (is it necessary for running Oracle Portal to Go)
When I run the oracle portal to go the following situation is encountered
    Working: http://localhost/pls/portal30/admin_/dadentries.htm
    Error at: http://localhost/pls/portal30/portal30.home
Error: The preference path does not exist: Oracle.Portal.Page (WWC-51000)
(And this is the main source of confusion)
    Working: http://localhost/pls/portal30/admin_/gateway.htm?schema=portal30
    Working: http://et-wks-08:5555/invoke/wm.server.admin/adminPage
Are there any other guides and post installation steps still to follow to successfully run this Portal to Go or it is sufficient?
I can also send the installation logs of both Oracle 9i application server (installActions.log and installActions2001-05-28_03-50-56-PM.log) and Oracle portal to Go (install.log).
If you ask, I can send you the installation guides that I have followed and the screen shoots of the error messages for a detail review.
Moreover can anyone please tell me if this version of Oracle 9i Application server is ok or I must try some other version?
Also advise any other if any successful configuration and installation options.
Is it possible to run this portal to go with any other installation options/arrangements/configurations etc?
Any help from anyone will be highly appreciated.

  • Oracle Portal page load performance

We have implemented Oracle Portal - Our HOme Page takes a long time to load. Can anyone suggest ways to improve the page load performance for portal

    - please look at the application log and apache logs. do you see any indicators there? are you getting any errors too (timeout errors, etc) along with slow speed?
    - performance depends upon a variety of factors. please tell us about your system, version, number of servers and the number of users and size of db.
    - please be a little more descriptive in your questions to get a reasonable answer. that's usually a sign of an Administrator who should be dealing these issues, instead of an amateur developer for whom it shouldnt be a concern.
    regards,

  • Oracle portal text search and bespoke table

We have the oracle portal text searching working okay.
We also have a bespoke table that users are uploading word documents into a blob column.
Is it possible to get oracle portal text searching to search this bespoke table as well. Maybe by creating an index that points at this table or
when a document is uploaded an api call that registers the document in oracle text searching??????

The oracle Portal text is created for content that can directly be mapped to items, folders etc on portal. The BLOB column you want to indexed has not been mapped to content uploaded in portal.
You might want to explore crawling using the Ultrasearch table datasource for the same

  • Oracle Ultra Search with Sun Portal?

  • Search form  to Oracle PortalAS

    hello,
what is the best and fast practice to create a search form to oracle portal..?

If I read your requirements correct, you want end users to be able to search in data within database tables - right?
The search portlets will not help you in this case as they only search content in Oracle Portal, i.e. text items, file items etc. It will not go into the database and query tables.
If you only need to search one table, you might want to play around with a Portal report. You can personalize the report to allow end users to use conditional statements on each of the columns in your table.

  • Slow performance with Oracle Portal

    Hi everybody,
    I'm using portal 3.0 , Oracle8i an linux SuSE 7.0 (P4 1.5GHz, RAM 512Mo)
I have a big problem, My site is very slow. We have only 30 end users.
For example when I want to connect to the site for a first time I get "this page can not be displayed.." after retrying many times it works. and for example when it is matter of sending an email (with smtp) the process is very slow and sometimes it doesn't even work.
I set the env-var OWS_ORAWEB_FEEDOMX=1, but no improvement
is any one having an idea of how to solve this problem...
    thanks in advance

Thanks Justin. I tried what you suggested. Here's the findings:
    1. increase prefetch count -- did not seem to make a significant difference;
    2. tried MicroSoft ODBC driver -- See to be a little quicker, but still way slower than native SQLnet or Net8;
    3. Use Oracle ODBC test instead of application -- Oracle ODBC test seem to restrict the max row retrieval to 100 rows -- but it still take 10 to 20 seconds, which means for 800 rows it will take the same amount of time. I checked the NT taskmanager, while retieving data there's no CPU consumption.
    4. Installed Oracle to another machine in the same location on NT/wintel box. Response time ODBC vs SQLnet is comparable (50 msec or so) on 200 rows data retrieval. The production database is in DEC alpha machine running NT.
Based on all these testing, I am still not sure what might have caused the performance problem in production oracle. Any further suggestions?

  • Can't Publish to oradav on Oracle Portal 9.0.4

I've set up the <url portal>/dav_portal/portal so I'm able to publish to it by dragging and dropping files from Windows Explorer, and everything works fine.
Then I set up BI Publisher version 10.1.3.3.2 and the scheduler works fine with e-mails and through ftp. However no WebDav publishing, it always fails with the following message:

The host name, user and password are the same I've used to publish via web folders with Windows Explorer, so these must be ok. I've tried the athentication types: none, basic and digest with the same results. SSL encryption yields a different error message (includes the message "plain text?" which I'm guessing is because either server or client hasn't SSL enabled). So as my last resort I'm asking the BI Publisher gurus here at the Oracle forums; my instance is running with the debug option on and here's the contents of xdo.log right after the error occurs:

  • Can't perform wildcard searches

    Hello world,
We're using Portal 3.0.9.8.1 with Patch 1949492 installed. This is on 8.1.7.2.4 SE Database.
When performing a search, cannot include wildcards. E.g. a search for 'test' returns only the exact word 'test'. It does not return 'testing','tester','test1','detests'.
This is against what Portal's Own Help file states. Click 'Search Tips' on the 'Advanced Search Page' and you are told the following:
The % character is interpreted literally, so do not include it as a wildcard. If you enter 100% as your search term, search finds content that contains the text 100%, not 1000 or 10000. Wildcards are automatically added to the beginning and end of your search term, so searching for 100 will automatically return content that contains 1000 and 10000.
If interMedia is installed and enabled, search automatically uses the stem operator to search for words that have the same linguistic root as the specified word. For example, if you specified the word lift, the search feature will return content that contains the words lift, lifting, lifted, etc.
Both of these statements are blatantly untrue as it does neither.
Any thoughts Oracle? Has anyone else managed a wildcard search?
    Frustrated
    Dave

I've just verified in 3.0.9 and wildcards are applied as specified in the documentation, when Text is not enabled. If your search term is 'test' then the SQL query will have the search term %test%. Literal % signs in your search term are escaped, so that if your search term was test% then the query would be for %test^%% escape ^.
There are a few things to remember. When searching WITHOUT Intermedia Text enabled the search will only match terms in the title and description of the item.
When, Intermedia Text is enabled, all of the content will be searched. However, as indicated in the documentation, the stem operator will be used. So if you search for 'test' the query is now a Text contains('$test') type query. The default operator is the '$' stem operator, which match terms that have the same linguistic root. So if your search term is 'test' it should match 'tests' or 'testing' or 'tested'. However, it will not match 'test1'. Please refer to the Intermedia Text documenation for more information on the stem operator and Text searching in general.

  • Unable to set session in Oracle Portal useing reverse proxy

I have deployed a reverse proxy (using Oracle HTTP Server) in front of a Oracle Portal Install (version 10.1.2.0.2). The steps followed to set this up came from the following documents:
Steps mentioned in Section 9.2 Configuring a Reverse Proxy for OracleAS Portal and OracleAS Single Sign-On for a reverse proxy on a Oracle HTTP Server.
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_15/core.1012/b13998/variants.htm#ASTED005
Also performed steps mentioned in -> Section 5.3.7 - Step 7: Enable Session Binding on OracleAS Web Cache of the Oracle® Application Server Portal Configuration Guide 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) -- B14037-03.
My current (example names shown only)setup details are as follows:
Reverse Proxy for SSO server (running on internal.oracle.com:7777): proxy.oracle.com:7777
Reverse Proxy for Portal server (running on internal.oracle.com:7778): proxy.oracle.com:7778
With the above steps completed, I can successfully use the http://proxy.oracle.com:7777/pls/orasso for login into SSO without any issues.
    Users get authenticated successfully.
I can also use http://proxy.oracle.com:7778/pls/portal for viewing pages on the portal fine . All self referencing links have also been successfully modified to point to proxy.oracle.com:7778.
However, an attempt to login in the portal is not successful. Clicking on the 'Login' link successfully redirects to the SSO login page (http://proxy.oracle.com:7777/<login-page>). However, after successful authentication, the success page fails to show up and the user gets shown the initial login portal home page again.
There are no error messages shown on the screen. But it seems that user session is failing to be initiated/set correctly, as shown by the log file (in $PORTAL_ORACLE_HOME/j2ee/OC4J_Portal/application-deployments/portal/OC4J_Portal_default_island_1/application.log ):

    Hi Chris,
The begin of the expection stack gives you the reason:
06/11/03 09:13:59 java.sql.SQLException: The method 'setSavepoint' cant be called when a global transaction is active
The reason is, that either the whole global transaction must be commited or rollbacked.
I don't know your actual configuration, but between the methods begin() and commit()/rollback() of the UserTransaction instance, OC4J/OracleAS uses a global transaction (= XA transaction) in your configuration. The state of a global transactions is completely under the control of the application server and several restrictions must be considered. One of them is, that you can't use the method setSavePoint/. E.g. you can't also call the method setAutoCommit(true) in this state, or change the transaction isolation level via setTransactionIsolation(newLevel).
This is NOT a limitation of the OC4J/OracleAS but is true for ALL application servers.
P.S. I can successfully set savepoints and rollback to savepoints in weblogic 9.0This means, that WebLogic 9.0 doesn't use a global transaction in this case.
Because I don't know your configurations (Oracle and WebLogic) I can't say, why the behave different in this situation.
    Best,
    Manfred

  • Install and config issues with Oracle Portal, Forms, Reports and Discoverer

For a while now I've been struggling with migrating a testing database to a newer version.
And right now I'm pretty much stuck at trying to configure Oracle Portal, Forms Reports and Discoverer
    What I've got:
    Windows server 2008 R2 64bit
    Oracle 11g database
    Java 6u27 64bit
JDK 1.6 64bit (using this after 1.7 ended up throwing out bugs while trying to start a weblogic server)
    JDK 1.7 64bit
Weblogic 10.3.5 (or so i think - I've installed from the wls1035_generic.jar from the oracle website)
PFRD 11.1.1.2 with 11.1.1.3 installed over it, installed without config
    and a hanging up configuration
Basically I've been trying to install PFRD (only forms, reports and enterprise manager from it actually) but it kept failing once it got to the configuration stage, so I installed without config, applied 11.1.1.3 and now trying to run the config manually with the good old \bin\config.bat
Result - the config froze for approx.18 hours then failed
There isn't much useful info I could deduct from the logs, mostly just says one or more configuration parts failed. At one place it mentions trying to set up a domain and starting up an adminserver for it - and apparently that's where it hangs up and finally times out and fails.
I'm a little clueless what to do about it as the logs don't say anything else of use I could understand. Any ideas there?

Trying the step by step, the only difference between that and what i do seems to be the file copying (which I can't do - there is no windows\extra\ directory anywhere, the files mentionned seem to already be on their places and either only there, or exactly the same) and clistering
So far the news ain't good - the config process hangs on creating domain ->Step Creating Domain started
It isn't frozen per se - the process doesn't use up any processor time, memory consumption within bounds, it reacts to button clicks and all..it just doesn't do anything concerning the said domain
the last thing the .out file shows:
Creating a new AdminServer Object ...
    AdminServer port is 7002

You said, "...+I would like to install Release 2(11.1.1.2.0)+ ...". Be careful. 11.1.1.2.0 is not Release 2. The version for Rel 2 is 11.1.2.0, notice that there is one less "1". Also, there is no way to patch from Release 1 to Release 2.
In EDelivery, this is what you should find if you search on "Oracle Fusion Middleware" for "Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit)":
First look for this link then drill into it:
Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Media Pack for Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit)
In this section you will find the following:
This is the full product installation of FMw 11 Release 2 (Forms & Reports)
    Oracle Forms and Reports 11g R2 (11.1.2.0.0) for Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit) V28761-01
This is the full product installation of FMw 11 Release 1 (includes Portal, Forms, Reports, and Disco)
Oracle Portal, Forms, Reports and Discoverer 11g (11.1.1.2.0) for Microsoft Windows x86 (64-bit) (Part 1 of 4) V18785-01
Oracle Portal, Forms, Reports and Discoverer 11g (11.1.1.2.0) for Microsoft Windows x86 (64-bit) (Part 2 of 4)
Oracle Portal, Forms, Reports and Discoverer 11g (11.1.1.2.0) for Microsoft Windows x86 (64-bit) (Part 3 of 4)
Oracle Portal, Forms, Reports and Discoverer 11g (11.1.1.2.0) for Microsoft Windows x86 (64-bit) (Part 4 of 4)
This is the FMw 11 Release 1 patch set that will bring the above 11.1.1.2.0 installation to 11.1.1.6.  This is NOT a full product installation - just a patch
Oracle Portal, Forms, Reports and Discoverer 11g Patch Set 5 (11.1.1.6.0) for Microsoft Windows x86 (64-bit) V29850-01
There are no patch sets for Release 2 as of yet.

  • List of Oracle Reports run through Oracle Portal.

    Hi,
It's possible that I am posting my message to a wrong Forum. If that's so, please let me know (and the correct forum too).
I have several Oracle Reports that are run through Oracle Portal (when user clicks a link for a report). I want to get a list of all such Oracle Reports in one go as I need to modify all of them. At the moment, to get the actual report name that I need to modify I am following the steps below.
When I am at 'Oracle Reports Security' page (in the Portal) where there is a section 'Reports Definition File Access',
    1. I click list icon without entering any value in the box. It shows me a list of all report definitions.
    2. After selecting a report definition, and clicking Edit, it shows me 'Manage Component' page. There are several links available. One of them is 'Edit'.
    3. I click 'Edit' and it shows me the actual 'Oracle Reports File Name'. This is the file I need to work on.
But instead of following the above steps for each of the several reports I need to modify, is there any way, say by running a SQL query, to find out the actual Oracle Reports file names?
The 'Manage Component' page shows 'Run Link' and links for 'PL/SQL source'. I tried to search for the schema name and package name in the database (by connecting as SYS user). However, I found neither the Schema not the Package.
Hope my question is clear. In brief, I want to get a list of Oracle Reports file names that are run through Oracle Portal.
Any questions, please let me know.
    Thanks and regards,
    Manoj.

    Jim,
Did you ever try to add Reports portlet as an item, so that user can click on each item to customize/schedule the report? You can have 50 of them, if that is what you really need.
Any reason why you want to create custom user interface, instead of using this vehicle that Portal provided by default?
You mentioned "The report Portlet ... does not allow customization." Actually, it does. You can do it by clicking on the Customize link of the Reports portlet.
    Hope this helps,
    -Jeff

  • Error in registering WSRP portlet producer  with Oracle Portal 10.1.4

    Hi all,
I am using OC4J 10.1.3.4.0 as producer of portlets and Oracle Portal 10.1.4 as consumer. I am encountering error in registering the producer WSDL. Here's the stack trace:

Note that when the producer is OC4J 10.1.3.1.1 then it works fine. The OC4J log file is also not throwing any exception. So, i think some problem with Oracle Portal 10.1.4.
    Thanks
