Please help me choose a 42" plasma

Hi - I've got basic cable, a TIVO Series 2, a BOSE 3-2-1 (dvd/movie sound), a WII, and actually a VHS (because the family doesn't want to part with or replace a collection) all run through a once-decent SONY.  Nothing hooks up with HDMI.
I'd like to go bigger in screen but smaller in footprint and I think 42" would fit fine.
I've been looking at the Panasonic Vieras, which fared well in Consumer Reports.  The TC-P42C2 is 720 and can be had for under $500 (CR said its only downfall is that the sound is fair, so that's a bit of a concern).  The TC-P42U2 is 1080 and can be had for $600.  Both rated well for SD picture but reading what many boards say, I am gun-shy.
With the non-HD cabling and feeds I have, I'm concerned the picture will look poorer than what I have now, and look poorer on the 1080 than the 720.
I can deal with SD looking like my TV, and I know that HD done right will blow away SD.  I'd just feel pretty bad if the 'new normal' was worse than before.
This is my biggest concern.  I welcome your thoughts.  Thanks.

Once upon a time, I had a black and white TV.
You had to stand on one foot with tin foil in the air to get it to come in clearly, and it was only 12" in size. I never bothered. I let it stay fuzzy.
The point is, that once you sit down and watch TV, you'll be fine. Don't try to keep up with the Joneses. Get a Blueray player to play your normal DVD's, in time, and you can slowly replace your VHS content with Netflix (out of the blueray player) and other sources over time.
Eventually, you won't care about your VHS's anymore. You'll update yourself a little at a time. The TV really should be the first device you replace.
Get the TV with the 1080, for that day when you have the blue ray. Anything over 40" really should have 1080 regardless, you can kind of start to really notice it at that size.
I am a Bestbuy employee who volunteers on these boards on my own time. I am not paid for posting here, and you should understand that my opinions are exactly that - opinions. I do not represent Bestbuy in any way.

  • Please help me choose a technology to connect !

Hi, I am a MSc (Software Development) student from University of Huddersfield, UK. I have to submit a final year project proposal by the end of July.
My real client is a pharmaceutical company with many offices in many cities. They maintain a central database in one city. The need is to develop a means of accessing this database via a Java technology over the Internet as well as Intranet. The use of applets and web pages is discouraged by the non-technical company advisors. I wonder what can be the solution ?? Please guide me in the right direction and kindly point a right Java technology to be used in a Java Application for this need.
    The relevant detail is:
1). Back end Database is in ORACLE.
2). Front END is supposed to be an Internet + Intranet enabled Application.
3). The choice of technologies to be considered:
RMI ??? (may be a rediculous question)
    EJ Beans ??
    Servelets ??
What should I think of ?? Please help me out as the time to decide is slipping out of my hands.
    Regards,
    Shahzad.

    The use of applets
and web pages is discouraged by the non-technical
company advisors. I wonder what can be the solution ??You sure? That pretty much rules out any normal 'web' solution. Maybe they want a web solution which does not use applets, but other web technologies are ok.
    If not...
The only thing left is a client-server application. Every client box will have to have the client application installed.
This means that you now have to implement not only a client solution but you will also have to create an install and handle security yourself.
The security problems are rather large. The server will have to have a port which is open to the internet. Transmissions will have to use encryption just to keep the kiddie-hackers out.

  • Please help me choose between a 13 in and a 15 in MacBook Pro

    Hello, everyone!
In about two weeks, I'm going to buy a new computer. I'll also be putting Final Cut Express into it to start delving a bit deeper into filmmaking. I'm a teacher but studied TV and documentary production in college and in a couple of years will be moving to my home country where people tell me things are pretty ripe for filming.
Anyway, to make a long story short, below you can see the details of the computers I have. I'm in between buying a 13-inch Intel Core i7 Dual Core 2.7 GHz MBP or the 15-in Intel Core i7 Quad-core MBP.
First of all, I have a Lumix FZ-100 digital camara which shoots 1080i AVCHD video. I see in the Final Cut Express page that it can work with HD video. I would like to know the following:
    1) Will 13 inches be enough? Remember, I come from having a 20-inch iMac and a 12-inch iBook, so size could or might not matter, depends on the point of view. If I buy the 15-inch one, I would also get the high resolution screen, btw, but having said that, I saw somebody's 13-inch MBP and the screen seemed BIG to me. I actually asked them if it was the 15-inch version and when they told it was the 13-inch one, I was a bit shocked.
    2) Can the 13-inch handle FCE? I say this because I know that that small computer is more powerful than the iMac I now have and WAY more powerful than the iBook. I've dabbled with the program with some video tutorials on my 2008-2009 iMac and it handles it without a problem.
3)How much of a difference is there between a 2.7 GHZ i7 Dual Core and a 2.0 GHZ i7 Quad-core really? How do these things actually work? I would ask this because I guess it would be ok if my computer ends up being a bit overpowered, but I would not be happy to feel that it is actually underpowered.
    4) Because of the price, I would have to get more RAM later, so I would actually have to stick to the 4 GB that they come with for a while. But then again, I've worked on my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo with 3 GB and used Pro Tools 8 to create entire jingles for TV in Mexico without a hitch. I also tracked guitars for an album in 2007 using Pro Tools with my little iBook and there was no problem. I'm not a whiner and I know that I can work with less... but ONLY if I know that the "less" can actually handle what I ask of it.
    5) A last question. Exactly how much of a difference is there in the normal resolution and high resolution models of the 15 MBP? Does it just look neater or can it actually help me with FCE?
Just as a side note, I don't care about carrying a slightly smaller laptop if I KNOW that it can handle what I ask of it (especially after seeing that 13 inches is not THAT small, compared to my 12-inch iBook lol).
Thank you to any of you that take the time to help me make up my mind. If I come up with more thoughts or doubts, I'll be bothering my thread again.
    Take care,
    Serge

    1. A 13" screen is awfully small to do any efficient editing. The 15" gives you significantly more on-screen real estate.
    2. All of the MacBook Pros can run FCE. However the graphics processor in the 13" model will limit some functionality with effects. See Tom's earlier comment.
    3. Not much difference. All these cpu's are fast. There will be more overall system performance gain from the quad core at the slower speed.
    4. FCE cannot use more than 4GB RAM anyway, so the 4GB that comes with every MBP is more than adequate. If you expect to use Aperture or CS5 then go for more RAM, otherwise there's not much reason to add RAM. You will be better off spending your money upgrading to the 7200rpm hard drive.
    5. Everything will be smaller on the high res screen; there are just more pixels (1680x1050) on the same 15.4" screen area. (I have a 15" MBP with the standard 1440x900 screen and it is beautiful.)

  • PLEASE HELP Me Choose the Perfect dv7t Quad Specs

am customizing an HP Pavilion dv7t quad edition notebook PC.
I have a few choices to make. Money is not really a problem, but I don't really want to spend an extra $150 if the difference for the price is utterly minimal. I would really appreciate you reviewing my current selections and determining whether or not I should upgrade or downgrade them, where applicable. Also, I would really appreciate you answering any questions found throughout my post. Thank you so much.
    I want my laptop to:
    1) Run RuneScape with no lag (except for lag from the game itself)
    2) Load webpages and programs extremely fast, and maintain the performance as the computer gets older.
    3) I do not want my laptop to overheat. My current dv7t from 2009 becomes so hot every time I use it that I cannot let it touch my skin or it will hurt badly.
    4) Have a beautiful graphics display
    5) Be physically appealing. My scale is: The Samsung Series 9 is considered beautiful, the Alienware is considered hideous
With these requirements in mind, please tell me whether or not you think my proposed laptop is a good choice. Also feel free to tell me about any other laptops that you think might work well for me. (PS: would the Samsung Series 9 be able to handle Runescape? Thanks!)

Since the speed is ever so close, and the features are the same between the two, I would go with the 2720 due to the fact that it's about $200USD less. You will not see a difference in speed for 100mhz. Only long calculations, such as compressing a movie, MIGHT gain you just a minute or so with the extra 2mb of cache on the 2820, but not really worth it I think."

    Hi,
For computers/laptops, nothing is perfect. You always can find a better one tomorrow. Depending on what do you need/want you can buy a suitable laptop for TODAY.
    2. Processor: 2670QM should be fine
    3. Graphics: stick with 6770M
    5. HDD: I prefer 7200rpm HDD, in theory should be faster
    6. 6 or 6 cells is ok, again depending how long you use the machine w/o power point nearby
    7. It depends but I prefer full HD (1920 x 1080)
    8. I would buy BD/DVD combo as mentioed in the specs
    9. No choice anyway
    10. BT (Bluetooth) is a technology which allows you to transmit and receive wirelessly over a short distance (I really don't know how far it can go but my phone only works within around 10 meters). You can use it for a BT mouse, keyboard, phone ... Please read more information from this:

  • Please help me choose a netbook for running arch

I'm looking for a 10-12" netbook with a long battery life. Currently I'm considering Samsung N140, N150, N210 and NC10. I like the look of N150 but I don't know how well will it run Arch. I'm also considering MSI Wind u160, but the awful gloss of the body scares me off.
At first I was very sure I'll pick Benq u121, but the I found out that Intel GMA 500 has very poor support.
Could anyone share his experience with Arch on netbooks with nice battery life? I'm talking about battery life of 6+ hours.

To avoid multiple threads on the same subject, please continue here: Best Netbook?

  • Please help me choose a Mac Mini

I have not owned any mac computer and have been waiting for the new mini for a few months. I need a decent mac computer without having to spend too much to program iOS and maybe some photo viewing and casual editing. So the OS X is important to me.
The new Mac mini is kind of disappointing. I would expect a better quad CPU and user expandable memory (still uncertain so far). So I am struggling between two choices:
    1. I may choose the new 2.6 G model and definitely need the memory to be 16GB. I am not sure if I want the 1TB fusion drive for $200.
    2. There are still some old 2012 quad models available at some online stores and I may get one and expand the memory to 16 myself. Can we easily swap out the hard drive and install one 1TB SSD? How do we transfer the OS and app with the box to the new SSD? The biggest concern on this option is if I can update the OS to OS X Yosemite and even later versions because I will use it for programming iSO apps and must be able to update to the latest OS X.
    Thanks.

From what I see in the Apple Store, the new Mini still does not have a quad-core cpu
nor did the older Mini (Late 2012) across any they had listed. However if you need a
quad core model and performance, looking into the future, you should seek to inspect
the higher specification computers in the line. Since there is a limited upgrade, I can
see why the Mini is desired. If you get a Mini server model, internal storage options
can be increased. New MINI 16GB RAM upgrade is an Online Store-only upgrade.
    http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/mac-mini
The only small computer with quad-core cpu technologies in the Store, is 15" MB/Pro
portable, offering several features but at a higher price; including a Retina display.
Of these, two models; both near & above $2K USD; the dual GPU model may have
gotten past the hardware earlier model owners cited issues with over a few years.
    http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro
An SSD and RAM upgrade could make the MINI a fair computer, even though it only
has the Dual-Core technology. However the upgrade may affect AppleCare coverage.
There often are Late 2012 model Mini Macs in the official online refurb store page, &
they qualify for the optional AppleCare; however they don't offer custom upgrades.
The low-end MINI has similar specs to the low-end non-Retina MacBook Pro 13-inch.
A little faster bus speed, and a slightly newer graphic processor...
At least the newest Mini, according to the online Apple Store, says it will ship with
Yosemite; so with 16GB RAM, that can be a good start. You should ask an Apple
genius or specialist what they can do for you in the way of an upgrade to larger SSD
or HDD, after delivery, so AppleCare is not affected. If they still let you do anything.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Please help me choose an internal drive for black macbook

    hi
    i own a black macbook.
my current drive is FUJITSU MHY2250BH which came with the macbook.
I need a biggeer drive, the biggest possible, and I would like 7200rpm as i do alot of audio intensive work etc.
i found a 500gb fujitsu, but the dimensions are slightly diff to my current drive.
should i make sure the dimensions are exactly the same? eg to the millimetre??
i just want to know about what specs to watch out for.
i live in uk, so dont really want to buy from a usa retailer.
    can anyone help?
    thankyou
also, would i be able to use my current drive as an external drive? how could i plug it into macbook? an enclousre? or just a wire?
i also have a bootcamp partition currently.
would the new drive be a simple change over? ie. no need to reinstall any app or boot camp from scratch again? i think i read that we can just use a time machine back up to put my current macbook drive state onto the new drive.....right?

As of October 1, 2009 Toshiba is now handling Fujitsu Branded Drive support.
Check what they've got available in the way of notebook/laptop internal hard drives. I'm sure their 500GB 7200rpm internal HD will fit
    SATA 3.0Gb/s (SATA-2)
    Form Factor 2.5"
    minimum cache of 8MB

  • Please help me choose my MAC

    Hi all,
I bet you get this a lot but im struggling to decide on what to spend my hard earnt money on.
I am looking at either an Macbook Pro or Macbook Air.
    Normal uses are:
    E-mail
    Apps
    Facetime
    Pictures
    Music
    Specialised uses:
    Recording Music
World of Warcraft (Not a heavy user)
So basically, my contacts are telling me different things...
Get the Air, SSD  with external storage because its worth the other sacrifices
    no ethernet socket
    less disk space
Get the Pro, 750GB Seria ATA Drive no external storage.
Im basically looking at spending no more than £1500, but to be honest, id like to of spent less yet if spending that extra amount is game changing then im not worried...
Anyone able to tell me if the SSD and Air is deffinately worth the sacrifices of having to get the external storage and losing the internal disk capacity?

    128GB  Solid State Drive
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Glossy Widescreen Display
Backlit Keyboard (British) & User's Guide (English)
That comes in @ £1,789 incl. VAT
That will last me some seriously good few years for my range of needs... agreed?
(I have an external 1TB storage already for my PICS and VIDS and MUSIC)
    Thanks
Ah yea your more of a "power user / 3D gamer" although please take a look at this video concerning the glossy screen, you may reconsider and get the anti-glare as it's a big creature comfort feature and nobody will care about two days after you got your new shiny machine, but your eyes will from glare and reflections.
    (loud sound attack)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_X0wo6dIsMU
Another, the 128GB drive is  TINY, you won't be able to carry much on it or have a lot in Windows if you go there.
You'll be hooking up that external drive A LOT and if it's USB that's going to be slow as Apple only supports USB 2.1, not the newer USB 3., you'll need Firewire 800 preferred, then the one port is going to wear out faster as your connecting and disconnecting a lot to go somewhere with the laptop.
Take that external with you and it's subjective to shock/loss and damage.
IMO you should get the 5,400 750GB stock drive or the 500GB 7,200 RPM, 500GB is a good size to grow into.
Plus since it's a MacBook Pro, LATER when the price of 500GB SSD comes down from the clouds you can upgrade it yourself and not void your AppleCare or warrantly (as long as you don't break anything, the new drive isn't covered of course)
I have the 5,400 RPM stock drive, because the larger RAM ability of these newer 64Bit machines (32 bit could only access 3.5 GB or so) there is less swapping to the drive so the drive speed isn't so much a factor like it used to be with the Intel Core Duo's that needed a fast 7,200 RPM drive to handle swap.
Also don't let Apple upgrade your RAM, it's a fortune, especially if you walk out the door with a new machine it goes up to $435 to up to 8GB as they don't buy back the 4GB.
Otherworld Computing and Crucial.com has 16GB of RAM for $234 apx now.
Again RAM, like the hard drive, is user replaceable as long as nothing is broken and it's not covered by AppleCare/warrantly. Keep your original RAM, you may one day have to reinstall it.

  • Can you guys please help me choose a microphone?

    Hi Guys waves
I never needed a mic before. Now I do. One that plugs into the computer where the headphones go. I'm clueless. I tried recording the sounds via the built in mic ("singing"...that's an overstatement, to be sure), but it's picking up the sounds in the laptap. So, I'm shopping for a microphone. Cheap, but not so cheap it makes weirder sounds than my singing does. Any suggestions?

Never mind. I just saved myself a heap of money buying a mic I didn't really need. I cleaned up the all the distracting noises with Audacity. Free! Yay! It sounds great.
    Take care.

  • Gurus: please help me choose my new HD Video camera

    Esteemed Video Gurus:
Currently I am an intermediate level Adobe Premiere Pro user. As my video editing projects grow more complex and my skills grow, my 8-year-old SD Video camera is just not acceptable anymore.
I would like to upgrade to my first HD Video Camera. Can anyone suggest a camera based on my needs?
*I need professional grade "starter” HD Video camera (<= $800 dollars)
    * I prefer extra features that I may need as more proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite applications.
*I was a professional photographer (when they used film) so I prefer to have manual control to focus, set exposure, use spot metering, and other settings that are adjustable, rather that auto.
*I primarily shoot inside "green screen" studio videos of subjects using a tripod and lighting. However, I also would like a camera that I can take with me anywhere, that would quickly stat for spur of the moment videos in public.
*I would want enough storage to shoot 2-4 hours of HD video.
*I know that I would like to have a long battery life.
*An Image Stabilizer is important to me.
*I would like to be able to burn blue ray in the future.
    *again I can afford a camera (<= $800 dollars)
Thanks for your time. Any advice is appreciated.
    Respectfully
    Bryan Edmondson

    [Moved to the Lounge.]
    You're asking a lot for $800.
As you were a photographer, and might still have lenses around, you could look into the Panasonic GH2.  New, they went for around $600 to $700 for the body.  But there is a new model out which now runs about $1,200 for the body, so you may have to look into a used one if you don't want to up the price.
The genius of the GH2 is that some Russian figured out how to hack the firmware and adjust things inside the camera.  As a result, and with the right hack, I'd argue that the GH2 can produce an image equal and most often superior to any other camera costing less than $5,000.  (And even for cameras costing more, it can sometimes hold its own.)
So, with the GH2 you have "Professional" grade.  (The following film was shot with the GH2.  http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Upstream_Color/70265224)  You have your manual controls, small enough to take anywhere, OIS available on many lenses, and it produces an excellent Blu-ray image.
The down sides are that the improved image quality definitely eats up storage space.  With what I consider the current best patch, you're looking at maybe two hours recording on a 128 GB card.  However, there are many patches available and quite a few will allow you to reach the desired 4 hour length with image quality still vastly improved over the original.  The other down side is battery life.  You'll need more than one for a full day.  You might get 2 to 3 hours out of a battery, so travel with several.
In your price range, I think that is definitely your best option.  You won't get a better image at that price.  Although you might be able to beat it for a little bit more when the $1,000 Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera comes out in July, though it will likely have it's own issues that may not work for you.  (You'll be hard pressed to get an hour of recording on a 128GB card at best quality.)

  • Please help with choosing the right text component

    Hello,
In my applet, I need a single-line text component with the following capabilities:
1: Support for bold font (entire text, not just part of it)
2: Support for underlined text (entire text, not just part of it)
    3: Support for blinking text
4: Ability to put caret anywhere within the text field with mouse
    5: Support for field validation
6: Ability to handle various key events and modify the text and/or move around caret position accordingly.
Now, I know there are at least 4 different text components: JTextField, JTextArea, JEditorPane, JTextPane. Which one of these is most suitable for the above features? Is it possible to use JTextField to support all of the above?

Here is a link to the Java Swing tutorial which discusses the text components.
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/text.html
I think you need to use a JEditorPane or a JTextPane (although I'm not sure any of the components support blinking text). A demo program shows some of the capabilities of these components:

  • How can i choose more than one transition using idvd. please help..

Hi my name is Luis and I took pictures and wanted to make a slideshow but when i want to choose more than one transition it wont let me. It will only let me choose just one. I would like it so the photo transition was random not just one. Please Help me if someone knows.. Thank You Very Much

Syncing and backing up in iTunes can be accomplished with multiple devices. They identify the devices based on the phone number, phone name, etc. The only way you would have an issue is if you were using different calendar contacts on the computer. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1495

  • HELP! Without any prompting for such a download, Firefox tells me 'Thank You for choosing Firefox 4', & I have lost ALL of my bookmarks! I absolutely need to restore them, please please help. Not impressed at all!

I am shellshocked.... so far I am not happy with Firefox's latest effort. When I first got this version, my 'saved tabs' function did not work, which I use regularly, and I lost vital site information with the update. I figured out how to fix this by changing a setting, and figured my problems were over.
But NOW without any prompting from me, Firefox re-opened, having lost the tabs I had, yet again, and instead opened up two new tabs, 'Welcome to FireFox' (ty for choosing firefox4), and 'Mozilla Firefox Start Page', AND I have lost all my bookmarks!, WTF! Please help me to restore them, I have tried the help info provided, but they are still not restored :( Some of those treasured bookmarks, an extensive list, I will never get again, unless I can restore the ones I had. :( NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL.

    Ok this is bizzare!
Thank you for your response, I went throught each and every step without any luck, even got the recovery programme, and painstakingly tried to sift through all that mumbojumbo to find what i needed. finally found the bookmark bit, but it had been fully overwritten :(, so on reading about previous ff versions, found the sqlite thingys, and they were relatively unscathed(partly written over, but saveable apparently TG), saved them to adiff drive, amongst other possibly good folders. Then looked up how to install them, and it said to close FF, and install to profile folder.
So i tried to close FF, and the original problem from a few days ago, where it asked me if 'i was sure i wanted to close this window as it has X tabs open', popped up again. This is where 'open blank page' selection was set, over 'open previous tabs'. Wanting to save that info on how to sort out these friggin files, I reset the Option to 'open previous tabs', and closed FF. After unsucessfully searching for the profile folder on my laptop, i opened FF intending to search online for where i could find said folder.
AND BANG, surprise surprise, the FF I had just closed with only tabs open about finding out what the heck to do, had disappeared, and instead my original saved tabs were up, and my bookmarks are there..... I am gobsmacked! what the heck just happened there???
I have made 3 back up in different folders now, of those friggin bookmarks. I am weary now tho of shutting it all down.... what if its back to the other pages I had with no bookmarks, tomorrow :(

I recently restored my 2009 macbook to factory settings and now its stuck on the welcome screen where u choose your country. My trackpad allows me to move the arrow around but when I tap on it to select continue it does nothing at all. The only thing else it will allow me to do is go thru the voice over tutorial by pressing escape. Please help me fix this I need to use my computer.

    Hi, teezbreezy64.
I found a couple of resources to help troubleshoot the issue you are experiencing. The first is this article named Intel-based Mac notebooks: Troubleshooting unresponsive trackpad issues found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1248.
Try disconnecting the MagSafe connector from the computer and check the trackpad function. If the trackpad becomes responsive again, improper grounding may be the issue.
If a two-prong AC plug is being used with the power adapter, try using the three-prong power cable that shipped with your computer and plug it into a grounded outlet.
If the issue persists, make sure the third prong is present and do not use an adapter to enable the three-prong adapter to be used in a two-prong outlet. Note that the ground in the three-prong outlet may not be connected. This is common in older homes or buildings with replaced outlets. In these situations, the three-prong power cable will not improve trackpad responsiveness.
If a grounded outlet is not available, rest your palm on the palm rest when using the trackpad. This should enable the trackpad to function properly.
If that does not resolve the issue then I recommend resetting the SMC on your computer. Here is an article on how to do that:
