Power vs Temperature Graph

I need to plot power/current  vs temperature on a graph from data collected by another program.  The program runs from -10C to 60C, back to -10C, then goes to 60C, and finally returns to 25C.  The collecting program stores time, temperature current, and power.
I would like to plot power/current on the y axis and temperature on the x axis, but maintain the time reference.  Basically I would like to see the x axis read
-10 -5 0 5.....55 60 55.....5 0 -5 -10 -5 0 5.....55 60 55...25
When I use PlotXY or PlotLine the x axis plots -10 60 and the y axis plots back on itself.
We can do the graph in Excel and have attached a pdf of a plot.

Paul,
I am not sure I got you right - could it be that you didn't read my post carefully enough? In the line
InsertAxisItem (panel, PANEL_GRAPH, 0, 10, item_label [10], 10.0 );
the 10.0 is not meant to be your temperature, but the (double) index of the respective array element. This way the x axis values of your graph are monotonously increasing from left to right, but nobody knows because the x-axis values are labeled with your temperature values... So if your tenth temperature is +20 and your twentieth temperature is -60 degrees, it will be displayed in that order and the graph will not put 'the minus temperatures and their labels to the left of zero'
 (One might argue that item_label [ 10 ] should read item_label [ 9 ] but this is a cosmetic issue...)

  • Power supply temperature: is 85'C normal?

Sorry, I am kind of all over the place - not sure where to post the question.
My iMac (24", 10.5.8) has been heating up at the top left corner, where the power supply is. I took it to the Genie bar and they said it is normal to feel warmth in that corner. They said the fans are working OK and the temperature sensors are fine. However, I have checked the temperature yesterday again - it was showing 85'C. Normal? Hm. I could boil a kettle on my mac - but that is not why i bought it.
I have now installed smcFanControl 2.2.2, which has brought the temperature down to 70'C. However, I can hear the fans now, as I have increased their speed from just under a 1000 each, to 2019(CPU)/2514(HD)/1560(OD).
    I wonder now:
    1. is 85'C normal for power supply and should I switch off the smcFanControl?
    2. is it safe to have fans going at double the original speed?
    3. I still have a year left on my warranty - should I take action?

    Hi Joshua
I also have the same Early 17" and totally agree with you, that slightly running the fans up will help the iMac last longer. I've been using smcFanControl sense I first brought my iMac home in Jan 06 and noticed the GPU would go up to +80C. I don't do games on my iMac, but run a second 21.5" LG Display and have always kept my GPU under 65C without pushing the fans to the point were they can be heard. I will probably pass it on to my wife or grandson this year, but see no reason for it to not last at least 4 more years.
These are my fan settings and temperatures.

  • What should power supply temperature be?

I have major fan issues with my mac pro. It is super loud all my temperature readings seem pretty good ranging from 25-35 degrees, except for power supply. It has temperature of 62 (location 1) and 58 (location 2).
Is that normal or does that seem high?

I don't know if there's a 'right' temperature and there are a lot of variables.
My Mac Pro (less than a year old) is typically always on, and my power supply comes in (currently) at around 113 degrees farenheit (45 celsius), as I kick back and surf the web.  It's quite a few degrees hotter when I'm putting the machine to serious work, converting or rendering video or audio files.
Depending on the work you're doing, the age of the machine (the older a system is, the more likely dust will have accumulated, causing it to run hotter), the environment (smokers, pets, etc, all contribute to dust accumulation), you could easily see temperatures that high or even higher.
Dust is probably your machine's worst enemy, those micro-fine particles settle on the components and act as an insulator, over enough time they can cause components to fail.  For a bit of light maintenance, power the machine off, open it up, and use a can of compressed air to blow as much dust out of your system as possible (you may be surprised how much can accumulate in there).
    Hope that info helps!

If you look at the context or detailed help for the graph, it explains the data types that it accepts. The waveform graph is used for displaying a complete set of time-series data with a uniform time between points. (with a t0, dT and Y values). It accepts either a 1D or 2D array of points (where t0 = 0 and dT = 1) or a waveform.
You are probably looking for an XY graph instead of a waveform graph - that is used to display an arbitrary plot of X & Y values and accepts a cluster containing an array of X and Y values.

  • Power Supply Temperatures Running Hot! Mac Pro shuts down.

    Hello,
First I will give machine/hardware specs of interest:
    2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (pre 2009)
    8 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 (running 2 displays)
    Apple RAID Card/Controller
    SMC Version: 1.25f4
*venting dimensions around computer: top=18", left side=3", right side=3" and back=18".
    Software of interest currently running:
    OS X 10.5.8
    iStat Menu
    SMC Fan Control
My machine has been shutting down spontaneously and I suspect either CPU or power supply overheating. In the 5 instances this has occurred, the room was very warm (AC was not on) and I was running HandBrake with CPU at full and an iStat reading of 145 F. Ambient was 77 F and I was not reading power supply temps at the time. I figured for sure this must be a CPU overheating issue. However, just a few hours ago I had another shutdown. The room was warm again but I was not running Handbrake, but StarCraft II. I have played a lot of Starcraft II with no problems until tonight.
I decided, this time, to check the temps on my power supplies. Power supply 1 = 147 F, and #2 is at 178 F. After many hours of searching forums I have concluded that these are crazy hot temps! I immediately installed SMC Fan Control to attempt to increase the fan speeds. I was successful in increasing all fans except the power supply (stuck at 599rpm). I have now turned the AC on in the house and the Ambient is down to 70, PS #1 145 and PS #2 169. All of these temps are a result of and idle machine running a browser.
The following may or may not be an issue, however, leave no stone unturned. I currently have 12 external devices running on USB. 4 WD passport drives, 1 DVD writer, 5 WD powered drives plus the keyboard and mouse. Also, the Mac Pro is plugged into a small UPS.
In all my forum searches, I just can't seem to answer some basic questions:
    1. Can an overheated power supply shut the system down?
    2. What are optimal (normal) running temps for Mac Pro's? (everyone seems to have opinions, but there doesn't appear to be a technical specification anywhere).
    3. I thought the fans, especially CPU fans, were supposed to kick in when the heat rises. Why are mine staying at minimal rpm's?
Finally, does it look like I need new power supplies? Fans?
This machine was put into service in March of 2008 and has done very intensive rendering for the film industry...long nights...rendering for days sometimes. It has been retired for over a year now and is used at a lesser degree.
Thanks for reading this long post! I appreciate any input you can provide!
    Other iStat reading of interest:
    Power Supply 1 voltage = 12.28 V
    Power Supply 1 current = 26.44 A
    Power Supply 1 power = 316.75 W

Also, the Mac Pro is plugged into a small UPS.
    Put your peripherals on that.
Don't share the same circuit for A/C as the Mac Pro, and put the Mac on 1300VA UPS at least.
As for all those external drives.... I'd consolidate into a good SATA case or two.
And yes in summer run with 3 of the fans up around 900 rpm.

I am assuming there is no way to show any other temps apart from hard disk and CPU with Hardware Monitor ??
If anyone wants to send me their graphs I will gladly upload them for comparison purposes. Then we can have a single repository for temps etc...
    How to make graphs ?
    1. Download Hardware Monitor from here:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24043
    2. Open hardware Monitor and then Window/Show History Windows
    3. Use the yes > /dev/null in 2 terminal windows
    4. Let it run for 10 mins or so
    5. Open Grab in Utilities in OSX
    6. Get a Window grab and save
    7. Send it to me at [email protected] but tell me before or after grease change, what the model is (15" 2.0), week number and I will add it to the site.

  • How do you update two waveform graphs at different rates?

    Hi there!
This is my first post after lurking and reading for a couple of weeks.  I am relatively new to Labview so this website has been a tremendous resource.  Here's to hoping that you guys can help me out.
My problem has to do with graphing two sets of waveform data.  I have a USB-6218 DAQ device and I am acquiring a voltage reading for a thermometer and a voltage reading from a power supply.  Essentially what I want to do is update the thermometer voltage graph about once a second while leaving the power supply voltage graph updating continuously.
I know that my device can only capture data at a constant rate so I customized the DAQ capture parameters strictly for the power supply voltage.  I also know that to display the temperature data I would have to throw away some of that data so I can get just the one temperature a second.
This is where I am stuck though.  Can someone please offer some advice as to how I can go about doing something like this?  Would I have to convert the waveform data into arrays and manipulate the values?  If so, do you lose the time information in the waveform when converting to arrays?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

So I made a case structure where if the elapsed time is 1 second then initiate the waveform.  It's a start but all it does is have a 1 second gap in the data.  I'd like for it to be continuous.  Maybe I'm not setting up the case structure correctly.  Can you please advise further?
    Thank you!

  • Graph plot colour dependent on x axis

    Dear Labview forum,
I would like to plot a graph in which the plot colour is dependent on the x axis value.
Eg I have a power vs frequency graph and would like the plot colour to
be say green for a certain frequency range, yellow for another range,
and the remaining range can stay white.
    Is this possible? How so?
    Thanks for your consideration,
    Jamie
    Using Labview version 8.0

If it is just a few colors, plot your data several times while editing each data part in such a way that the undesired colors contain NaN instead of data for each X.
(If you want contiunously variable shades of colors, make your own graph using a picture indicator. )
A simple example from long time ago can be found here: http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&message.id=65314#M65314, just modify for your purpose.

  • XY Graph with No Lines, Just Points?

    Hi All,
I want to build a Pressure vs. Temperature graph.  This should be a standard XY graph, but I just want to see the point scatter with no lines connecting the points.  Is there a way to eliminate the lines between the points (or make them invisible)?
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You can do it in graph properties. Right click on graph and select Properties. Go to the Plots tab.  Select a point icon (anything other than <none>) in the third column of icons. Next select the top-most selection in the fourth column. It's the symbol with the plot points but no lines. This will give you waht you want.

  • Graph / Chart show system time in X-Axis.

I try to plot the temperature graph/ chart with respect to my system time. The problem is that the if i select the relative time it starts from 00:00 and if i select absolute time it always starts from 05:00 in 24Hrs.
I need X-Axis Chart/Graph show my system time and in Y- Axis it show the Temperature value which is received from serial port.

First I am very thankful to you for your kind cooperation. As I am beginner
my questions may be the unintelligent.
I have tried it and now the system time shows in graph. I have also a time
sync problem. After initializing graph with the time being the value of time
does not match with system time. Some time it is faster with respect
to system clock and some time it is slower with respect to system clock. I
observed it is slow when the data of graph is 1 byte long and when the data is
2 or 3 bytes long it goes fast.
The another problem is the chart Y-Axis Interpret HEX value (00 to FF) means 0-255
points only. My data is ASCII string with 4 characters like ‘9562’. Every character
will show the weightage as shown in attached file. I want to use the same ASCII
string to the input of graph for single point. Instead of HEX value (00 to FF).
And the another help from your side can you send me the book name or softcopy of LAB
    View tutorial (Easy understandable).

  • X220 fan constantly runs even a low power settings

Until recently I rarely heard my fan, other than it briefly coming on.  After hearing the fan run pretty much all the time now over the last few days, I changed power setting to balanced power and optimized fan control - balanced in Lenovo Power manager.  Ran the hardware diagnostics in Lenovo and Cores at 74 and 76 degrees. Fan still runs even after lowering these power consumption settings.
Have the latest BIOS and all other updates installed.  No grinding or weird noises - just constant fan running on low speed and a little higher when docked.
I don't know that there is anything wrong and did a search for ideas on how to check that a fan on a laptop is running commiserate with the power and temperature of the laptop.
For Lenovo or laptops in general, how do you check and see that the fan noise you hear is the noise you should hear?  I have mine plugged into a mini dock, not blocking any fan exhaust, etc.  AC outlet power via mini dock.  90W 20V adapter plugged into the mini dock.
I saw that one user went into the BIOS and changed the Adaptive Thermal Management setting to Balanced from the default of Maximum.   Have not tried that as I already have the power scheme to balanced and not sure what setting it - also - in the BIOS will do.
Any experiences with diagnosing whether the X220 fan is operating as it should?  Saw many concerns recorded early on but after BIOS updates most excessive problems seemed to resolve.
Funny things is that when I pop the X220 out of the mini dock, the fan noise pretty much disappears.  Like right now, within a minute of undocking the laptop, the fan is not longer audible.  Power settings for battery and plugged in are both set to balanced so that should not be a factor.
    Txs

Are you sure there are no trojans or viruses on laptop? Also lounch the task manager and check out the service or application with deranged CPU loading while the laptop is in the idle mode. What is the power usage in the idle mode?

  • Mac Pro overheating; can I replace the power unit fan?

After much strange behavior with my MacPro2,1 model I installed Hardware Monitor and discovered that the temperature readings for some of my Memory Modules and for the sensors on the Power Supply location 1 and Power Supply location 2 are very high.  With no load the temperature is reading about 62° C on the "Power Supply Location 1" sensor and 85-90° on "Power Supply Location 2" sensor.  I installed smcFanControl and found that I could cool the Memory Modules but even with all fans set on maximum speed the Power Supply temperatures droped only slightly to about 78- 80° C.  All of the fans increased their RPM except for the "Power Supply Fan" which remains at 599 RPM no matter how high you set the Power Supply fan on smcFanControl.
All this leads me to suspect that the Power Supply Fan is either not running at all or is not able to accelerate in response to high temperatures in the power supply area.
    My questions are these:
        1. Can I visually confirm that the power unit fan is not working?  That is, what do I need to do to actually visualize this fan in question and see if it is running?  Is there another way to confirm that the fan is bad aside from just inferrring this from the high temperatures and findings in smcFanControl?
        2. Is fan replacement a job that I could reasonably expect to perform myself or do I need to take it to an Apple repair shop?  I have replaced hard drives and RAM in Powerbooks and a Mac Mini, installed PCI cards, etc.
        3.  Are there diagrams and/or instructions for doing this sort of thing?
    Thanks.

If you  only have one DVD drive, you can shine a bright light straight back through the lower drive area where you'll see a screen with fan blades behind it at the rear end of the SuperDrive cage. That's the power supply fan at the front of the power supply. You should be able to see it spin when you power up. I found that smcFanControl couldn't control the PS fan on my Mac Pro 1,1 either (it does work on the 5,1's PS fan). If you remove the SuperDrive carrier, you can get directly at the PS fan for more effective dust removal.
Diagrams and instructions for how to do that and much more can be found here http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/macpro/ which is a source of Service Manuals. X423424X gets the credit for posting that link; I just bookmarked it.

  • NTC temperature sensor simulation

My name is Diego,  and have troubles with multisim
I have to make a simulation of an NTC sensor where R is related to T as follows:
In the simulation I have to obtain the curves as shown in the image:
    using a circuit like this:
My teacher told me that I have to create an "special resistor" SPICE  model where B and T have to be inputs that dinamically  changes the value of resistance R and then make a DC swep simulation and get the Resistance of NTC vs Temperature graph
After that I have to use this circuit to linearize the sensor and obtain a curve where VR2 is a function of T (using B = 4000 and temperature changes from 270K to 323K)
My problem is that I just know the very basics of Multisim (Place the components then hit Play button and watch osciloscopes or multimeters). I dont even know what SPICE means and how it works, and I dont know how to obtain those graphs.
I hope that some of you guys could give a hand to learn more about using Multisim, I will really preciate your help
    Thanks in advance
P.D. : I found a model of an NTC in this topic of the forum (the atached file in there):
    http://forums.ni.com/t5/Circuit-Design-Suite-Multisim/How-do-I-make-generic-spice-models-work-in-mul...
But I don´t know how to change the parameters to fit to my job (for meB have to be 3 diferent values = 3 diferent curves and there B is a fixed value =3548 ),  also I noticed that If I hit the play button and measure the current across the NTC sensor I get 220uA so the resistance of that sensor @ 12°C is 12V/220uA=54.5KOhm but acording to the matematical relation for that specified example should be 17.2Kohm (aprox)
    I´m using Multisim 12

    Hi,
Generally, Multisim allows users to build and simulate circuits even if they have no understanding of spice. I found an online article which tells more details about creating spice models for NTC's.
