Powerbook not reading commercial CDs

I've tried resetting the PRAM. I've tried deleting plist files. I've turned off "use error correction when importing audio cds" in itunes preferences.
It does, however, read "Johnny Cash Live at Folsom Prison." Seriously.
It also reads DVDs and CDs I've burned myself.

Mine won't read the White Stripes' Icky Thump.

  • ITunes 5 upgrade does not read my cds

I think I went to the wrong section. Here is what I asked, anyone williong to help. Many thanks.
Hi! It is my first posting here since I bought my PowerBook. No problems until I upgraded (through the automatic software upgrade) last week to iTunes 5. I was running ok iTunes and I could play my cds while working, however, now with this last upgrade iTunes does not recognize the audio cds and it does not show up in the left "source" window. What is going on? How do I solve this problem? is it necessary to downgrade (and how do I do it)? Thanks in advance for your kind help:D

I'm having a related problem. iTunes 5 reads commercial CDs ok but CDs burned previously using older versions of iTunes are no longer associated with my library -- so the tracks don't come up with names/artists etc.
does anyone out there know how to restore the pointer / link that associated the playlist filename with the file in the iTunes library?? I've looked at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93952 and have located the CD Info.cidb file in my Library > Preferences -- but what do I do next?
iTunes 5 automatically accesses CDDB but it obviously cannot find my custom mix in the database.
It does read the burned CD OK and will play it.
These are CDs burned from "regular" (not Smart) playlists using an older version of iTunes. The playlists still exist on iT5 and all the songs are still in the library.
I'm assuming this has something to do with the fact that iTunes 5 has relocated the files (?)
Thanks -- I've been searching around for the solution but no luck so far.

  • HT2801 My drive reads discs as blank and not reading music cds at all.

My drive is reading start up discs as blank and not reading music cds at all( they just spin in there until I eject them). They're clean, scratch free and ejecting with no problems. I replaced my hard drive three weeks back and need to replace programs and info.

    A few suggestions:
-Here is an tech article dealing with CDs and optical drives:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58382
-Your optical drive will not read CD-RWs so make sure it is a CD-R.

  • IMac not reading old cds?

My iMac (late 2009) is reading some CDs but not others.  I put in the CD, it holds on to it for 30 seconds, then spits out without ever showing up on the desktop.  The only difference I can tell between the ones it does read and the ones it doesn't is the age, the old ones it is having problems with (i.e. made in the 90s), the newer ones (maybe roughly 2000 and on) is fine. My work computer can read them fine. Any idea what's up?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

  • Dual core iMac  will swuddenly not read blank cds

suddlenly my new iMac will not read a blank cd any answers out there?
    thanks

    Hi sammi123
    Welcome to Discussions
will not read a blank cd
Do you mean it will not recognize a blank CD? If so, check to make sure that you didn't accidentally set your iMac to ignore blank CD's. You can check this in the CD's and DVD's tab of system preferences.

  • MBP Not reading certain CDs

    Hi,
We've just bought a brand new 2GHz MacBook Pro with an extra 512Mb RAM installed (by Apple). After dutifully downloading about 400Mb of updates, including upgrading it to OSX 10.4.7 and downloading a firmware update (everything went fine), we started to play around with it.
First disk I put in was a Futurama (Season 4) DVD - Apple DVD Player asked to confirm the region selection and said that "The region could only be changed 5 more times" - the disk played fine through both DVD player and Front Row.
Next, I ejected this and put a music CD in (Jools Holland: Swinging the Blues, Dancing the Ska), but the MBP just spat this out. Next, I tried the Office '04 Student Edition installer CD, and after about 3 mins of clicking and whirring, this got spat out too. Thinking we had a dead CD drive on our hands, I tried 3 more music CDs - all worked fine -opened up in iTunes and Front Row and played fine. I even tried the installer CD for Photoshop CS2 and this worked fine, so did the Mac OSX Installer DVD (only software DVD to hand...). A CD that was burnt on our G4 Tower also worked fine
I tried the two problem CDs in my G4 PowerBook (OSX 10.4.5), and they worked absolutely fine.
I've done the basic troubleshooting things - reboot, repair permissions, reboot again, create another user account to see if the problem still exists, and there's no change - the two CDs keep on getting rejected by the MBP.
What's going on here - is there an easy way to resolve this problem without taking the laptop on a 3 hour round-trip drive back to the Apple store? Everything else about it's fine - there is a slight whine but nothing at all to moan about (only noticable when actually listening for it). Are there any prefs files I can trash?
The MBP has the SuperDrive, whereas the PB only has a DVD/CD-RW Combo drive.
    Thanks for the help

The region limitation is explained here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60183
While there are some region free DVD players, none of the ones I've seen on Macs are.
Also Macs don't support Copy Protected CDs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106882
Disks you've created on media which is not compatible with the drive may also pose a problem:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
I've also found a lot of bad media out there. Media stored on spindles have a tendency to last much shorter than media stored in jewelcases.
The fact the Office disk got spat out suggests the drive or the disk in question may be becoming dirty.
While there are disk drive cleaners out there, if your machine is under warranty, I'd recommend you stick with having AppleCare take care of it. Note, with notebook computers you often don't have to drive anywhere. Just call AppleCare, and they'll ship you a box to have it repaired by their service center. Before you do that, backup your data, and be sure to keep track of any case numbers they give you.
    As for your MacBook Pro:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303365
is recognized as something to contact AppleCare about.

  • My i-mac can't read commercial CDs -

after attempting to read them, they are ejected.  recordable CD's work ok, so it doesn't seem to be an driver problem.
I running O/S lion and the Imac is about 4 years old.
    anyone help with this please?

I suspect part of the drive is giving out, Rad & Write use different voltages & circuits. CDs & DVDs also use different Lasers.
Only a couple of things to try...

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

  • MacBook not reading some cds and dvds (so disappointing)

I just got the new 2.16 Macbook (white) a few days ago at Frys in Houston. Everything was going ok until I started to load m-audio protools from the cd, it repeatedly ejected the cd,so I tried loading some of my other software from cds and they seemed to work fine, then I tried to load protools again and after a few trys the cd drive worked. Day before yesterday I tried to watch the new movie Apocalypto and here we go again, it keeps ejecting the dvd.It will play some of my other dvds but not all of them, and yes they are super clean with no scratches. Here comes the crazy part, as soon as I put the dvd that wont work in the drive if I pickup the Macbook and shake it for a few seconds (not to aggressively) the dvd starts playing and it plays great the whole length of the movie. When I eject the dvd and try and play it again it wont accept it, it just keeps ejecting it. I returned it to Frys and got a whole new Macbook thinking I had a bad drive in the first one. The second Macbook has the same problem,so I returned it last night. I took the Apocalypto DVD with me and tried it on all of the Macbooks and Macbook Pros that were on display. They had a new 2.16 Macbook (white) just like the two I had just bought and it would not accept the dvd either. They also had the 2.0 Macbook on display and again It refused to load the dvd (keeps ejecting). I even tried the 17" Macbook Pro and the 15" Macbook Pro. The 17" wouldn't work either but the 15" worked great every time I put the dvd in. The drive that was in the 17" was the UJ-85J. The drive that was in the 15" was the HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA 4080MA. The drive that was in the two Macbooks that I had bought and in 2.16 that was on display at Frys was the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E. The drive that was in the 2.0 Macbook on display was the UJ-857D. Has anyone had this kind of problem lately. This is so disappointing, other than the drive acting up everything else was working great. My Quad G5 plays all my dvds great. Including the new Apocalypto movie.
    Any Idea Guys
    Thanks
    Joeip71

You need to take the machine with your DVD's and CD's that are not working into an Apple Store or to an Apple Authorised Service provider and demonstrate the issue to them so that they can accurately diagnose the problem and replace the drive if it's found faulty. No one here will be able to tell you how to fix a drive which likely needs replaced under warranty.
Alternatively, call Apple Support and they will assist you over the phone, and if they're unable to help you can mail it in for repair. Or (this is what I'd do) since you bought it less than 14 days ago, return it to a Fry's store for a refund or exchange for a new one.

  • Not reading burned cds

my imac won't read anything burned by another computer, mac or not. is there a driver i could download for this, and if so - which one? i have no idea when i get to driver downloads where to go. thanks in advance for any help! have a great day!

Samantha, Welcome to the discussion area!
There is nothing to download to add this ability. Your iMac should be able to read those discs.
Have you tried cleaning the optical drive? Use one of the kits that contains a CD with brushes on the bottom. This will clean the dust off the laser lens.

  • Satellite M30-107: Mat****a UJ-820s not reading burned CDs

Anyone know why. Tried different burning programs made no difference. Works on every pc/laptop on the planet except this laptop! It shows up as a blank cd !!
    any ideas?
    thanks

    Hi
Possibly the drive cannot read this CD because it doesnt support it.
Of course, this is very strange that it doesnt work only on your notebook drive but in the user manual you will find the list with the properly worked medias. It is possible that other medias will not work correctly.
I have had also a same issue. The burned CD doesnt work on my notebook but on the second notebook was no problem.
I have purchase a different brands and tested it. Now the drive accepts the TDK medias.
I think on your notebook is it a compatibility issue.
