Premiere Pro's #1 missing feature

I just sent the following FR to Adobe.  I believe it's the single biggest thing missing in PP.  If you agree that this would help your workflow, please support these ideas by reposting them in your own FRs here: http://www.adobe.com/go/wish.
Any tweaks you would suggest for an event better workflow?  Please share!
Cheers
FCPX and FCP7-style subclip creation
How would you like the feature to work?
FCPX-style subclips:
1. Ability to assign keyboard shortcuts to Bins (e.g. numbers 0-9 on keypad).
2. While playing a clip in the Source Monitor, hitting one or more of these shortcuts would automatically send the whole clip or its marked in/out range to the linked Bin(s), without interrupting playback.
3. For easy reference, Bins with a shortcut could display the shortcut in the Bin's name.  For example, a Bin named 'Interviews' would automatically appear as 'Interviews {1}' if associated with that shortcut.
FCP7-style subclips:
1. Ability to drag/drop trimmed clips from the Timeline back into one or more Bin, together with any associated effects and keyframes.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to be useful, these subclips would have to maintain flexible in/out points (i.e. ability to trim in/out points out to the clip's original duration)
Why is this feature important to you?
Being able to organize/search for partial clips in the Project window is much better than doing so in the Timeline since Bins are: keyword searchable, sortable, and viewable in 2 modes (Icon or List view). But most of all, easy subclip creation would help keep the Timeline free of all non immediately-relevant media, since any clips for later use could be stored in Bins instead of in the Timeline.
The lack of any easy, flexible and intelligent subclip creation/organization in PP remains it's biggest shortcoming, IMO.  PP's current method of creating subclips - that can't be created on the fly from the Source Monitor, can't contain imbedded effects/keyframes, and can't have flexible in/out points - is of little real world use.
Adding FCPX and FCP7-style subclip creation/organization in Premiere Pro would make editing easier for most, if not all, editors: including documentary filmmakers with lots of footage to sort, music video editors who want to store B-roll clips for later use, FCP editors migrating to PP, and on and on!

Biggles, you've just proven my point by saying that you haven't used subclips in the last 15 years of using Premiere.  Thank you!  I haven't either.  That's as good an indication as any that subclips in PP are worthless due to their hard in/out points, as mentioned several times before.
As I said, sometimes you don't know what you're missing until you see or get it.  I didn't know the organizational tools I've been missing out on myself until I tried FCPX.  But as I made rather clear, FCPX's genius organizational abilities are where that program's genius ends, IMO.  So FCPX is a no go, despite it's brilliant keywording features.
I'm sorry you and certain others on these forums see my honest effort to see PP improve as a 'rubbishing' of Premiere and it's users.  I choose the path of offering FRs, and thoughtful, relevant discussion rather than unwarranted attacks/assumptions (e.g. your assumption that since you personally have never used subclips in 15 years, Adobe's resources would be better spent elsewhere than improving this feature that never worked properly).  Where some see opportunity, as I do in some amazing tricks FCPX has shown us are possible, others see problems (added programming work for Adobe, etc).
Having seen several users jumping the gun with  accusations and  assumptions, I'm beginning to question if users on these forums are more interested in seeing Premiere Pro improve, or defending Adobe and themselves against the truth that there's still a ton of room for improvement.
When those who dedicate lots of time to offering well elaborated FRs are told by a forum member 'just leave', you've got to wonder what's their motivation.  As Cypher in The Matrix says, "Ignorance is bliss".  You can't feel the lack of what you don't know exists, so I can understand a certain resistance to new ideas, however better they may be to the old paradigm.  Resistance to change and improvement is a historic fact: it happened with cars (i.e. resistance to 'horseless carriages'), and sadly it happens in every industry, to this very day... including Adobe software.

  • UPDATE to "Premiere Pro's #1 missing feature": Auto-Tagging Bins with Shortcuts

In a previous thread (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1179075?start=0&tstart=0) I suggested that Adobe give us FCPX and FCP7-style subclip creation.
I just got some new ideas that improve this previous FR:
AUTO-TAGGING BINS with user assignable SHORTCUTS
    1.   Creating an auto-tagging Bin could be as simple as adding a special character such as ‘#’ in front of its title.  So for example, renaming a Bin from ‘Interviews’ to ‘#Interviews’ would automatically add the tag ‘Interviews’ to the metadata of all clips within it.  Users could even add several auto-tags to a single Bin.  For example, by naming a Bin ‘University #Interviews #Staff’, any clips added to that bin would automatically inherit the searchable metadata tags ‘Interview’ and ‘Staff’, but not ‘University’ since it doesn't have the ‘#’ symbol added in front of it.
    2.  Contrary to FCPX’s 'keyword collections' approach, my approach would also allow Bin/Sub Bin tagging hierarchies.  Imagine the following Bin structure: A parent Bin named ‘Interviews’ containing 3 sub-Bins named ‘Staff’, ‘Students’ and ‘Sound bites’.  Adding an auto-tag to the parent Bin, (e.g. changing the name to ‘#Interviews’) would automatically propagate that tag to the contents of all sub-Bins!  The organizational power of this would be amazing!
    3.  At any time, a user could remove metadata tags from clips simply by dragging the clips out of an auto-tagging Bin, or by removing the auto-tag from the Bin itself.
    4.  Any number of Bins, whether enabled for auto-tagging or not, could be given keyboard shortcuts.  Doing so could be as simple as selecting a new ‘Assign shortcut’ option from the Bin’s context menu, which would automatically bring up the ‘Keyboard Shortcuts’ window, with a new ‘Bins’ root folder twirled open and ready for use (in addition to the current root folders: ‘Application’, ‘Panels’ and ‘Tools’).  For easy visual reference, this ‘Bins’ root folder would automatically be populated with the names of every Project Window Bin, in their current hierarchy.  So, using the previous example, the Bin ‘Interviews’ would have a twirly arrow to twirl down/up its sub-Bins ‘Staff’, ‘Students’ and ‘Sound bites’.
    5. Any time a user adds a shortcut to a bin, that shortcut would appear at the end of the Bin’s name (e.g. adding the shortcut ’2′ to the Bin ‘Interviews’ would result in the Bin’s name appearing like this: ‘Interviews {2}’).  Thus users would always have a quick visual reference for remembering shortcuts.
    6. These options would give users 4 great ways to add clips/sub-clips to Bins for sorting and/or auto-tagging:
Use a Bin’s shortcut to send a clip’s in/out range from the Source Monitor to the Bin.
Use a Bin’s shortcut to create sub-clips of 1 or more selected clips in the Timeline (something you can’t do in FCPX!)
    Drag&drop a clip’s in/out range from the Source Monitor to a Bin.
Drag&drop 1 or more clips from the Timeline to automatically create subclips that inherit any present auto-tags.
IMHO, FCPX still has superior organizational tools vs PP, at the moment, but with the suggested features above, PP would truly one-up FCPX in this regard!
Hopefully all of this is clear.  Thoughts?  Comments?

  • "Premiere Pro CS3" is missing some codecs!

    Hi!
First of all, thanks for stoping by and read my post.
It's me first time ever using Premiere Pro CS3. I tried to some basic video editing on it, but I cannot hear any sound coming out of my laptop speakers; when i import the video clips. Even tho, I can hear them with "Windows Media Player". So, I investigated a bit and I did some of the things adviced by Adobe's knowledgebase thing.
And, I came up with a paper saying to download "MediaInfo" and "GSpot" to find out the codecs of the "mpg" files. Here is a report i made with the information given by those programs:

As you can see "Premiere Pro CS3" is missing some codecs, so my question is where can I download those?
I forgot to tell you, that I use a HP laptop Dual core Intel processor with Win Vista Home 2 GB of RAM and 160 GB of HD
    Thanks in advance
P.S. I am attaching the Diagdx.txt, even tho I don't think has to necesary
P.S. 2. I just saw another post similar to this one, but it doesn't tell you how to make "Premiere Pro" get the audio to work in my clips and finished project

Most good file converters can handle Video and Audio. If you are having issues with the Audio, both Audition and SoundBooth can convert to almost anything and any sample rate and bit depth.
Here's a LINK to the PrPro Wiki. There are links to various aspects of conversion there.
Now, remember that when working FROM MPEG-2 and also AC3, the files are compressed to begin with. Quality will suffer, and there is only one way around that - go back to the original source files. If not possible, then you have to determine if the quality has suffered too much.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Premiere Pro CC is missing presets | CC Packager/Volume Licensing

We have volume license and are trying to install the CC Suite using CC Packager V1.1.
Everything seems to work fine however most of the presets are missing from Premiere Pro CC - no RED, XDCAM or AVCHD etc.
This is a problem i've seen before with trial versions etc - it's like premiere is being installed in trial mode, although all the applications appear to be fully activated.  Audition etc all work and we don't get asked to login/register or notified that the programs are running as a trial.
I've got a case open with Adobe (184479912) however I keep getting passed between the Premiere team and licensing team - they keep blaming each other and not helping me.
Has anyone got any ideas how to fix this?
Has anyone sucesfully installed the CC Suite using CC Packager and had all the Premiere presets show up?
Any ideas how i can get through to someone more helpful in the support team?
    Many thanks in advance
    Daniel

Romsinha, this does not resolve the problem. Have you found an actual solution yet?
I work for a college. We installed CCE with video serial key as you stated above. We are still missing all of the presets and codecs that we use for class. I see this has been a problem since July, why isn't it fixed yet???? This is a major problem for any large institution. Has any other schools or institutions found a solution with this issue?

  • Premiere Pro CC and missing audio tracks for .mts files

    Hello guys,
I used to edit my .mts files with Premiere Pro CC without any issues until yesterday.
Now I import my .mts file (made with a Sony VG900) but Premiere doesn't recognize the audio tracks (that I can hear just fine with VLC).
I tried changing the extension in .m2ts but it didn't work, I also tried reinstalling Premiere but, again, it didn't work and I tried (I was desperate) to install Premiere CS6 just to check if maybe the problem was just about the CC version. Guess what? It didn't work...
I tried also converting the file with Encoder in .mp4 but after the conversion I can't hear the audio with VLC and, of course, it doesn't work on Premiere.
Do you think it's a Premiere issue or a file problem?
I used those same files for other videos (like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1X5vsZ-5yI) and I had no problems. Then I updated Premiere, I moved the files in other folder and the problem came to life.
    Any idea?
(I'm waiting for my colleague to send me a new mts file just to check if I accidentally damanged the old ones).

    A similar problem here..... although......
Take a look at this screenshot
As you will see, the blue marked audio is repeated audio of less than on sec. Certainly not the way it has been recorded.
I think I've got the answer........ (working with Premiere Pro CC, always up to date, Mac OX 10.9.2; Camera: Sony HXR NX3)
    1. Don't copy but clone your flash card to the location where to edit on your hard drive. At the same time: alt+click on external flash card, draw it onto your hard drive location.
(or use carbon copy cloner, which I use for backup and transferring avchd files).
    2. Don't import regularly via the import dialogue box (cmd-i). Instead: use the mediabrowser browser, locate the map "private" (as often standard named),
    3. Via cmd-a (select all): select all videofiles.
    4. click right mouse button and select import.
This way, all the video and audio files will be imported.
If however you have alreade re-used your camera flash card for recordings and don't have access to the 'corrupted' files to be imported into your project, you won't be able to solve the problem. You just lost some of the essential data which were not copied onto your Mac.
This solution I found for my problem may well be the one you are looking for........
Another solution might be to convert the compressed avchd - before importing into your project - into uncompressed .mov filed. However...... you will lose data so this is not exactly what I would prefer if the former described workflow does fix the problem for you.
Please let me know if this works for you or not.
    Good luck!
    Regards,
    Peter

  • Proxy editing in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3?

    Hey all.
I understand proxy editing is a method by which the user does all of his/her editing with lower quality footage, and then all of the edits/effects/transitions/etc are applied to higher quality footage when the project is rendered.  Does Premiere Pro CS3 support this feature?  If so, how do I use it?

Perhaps, but not in my case.  I'm doing my editing on the following rig:
    Alienware Area-51 m5790:
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 (2.16 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 4 MB L2)
ATI Mobility Radeon X1900 (400 MHz Core / 470 MHz Memory, 256 MB, PCIe)
    4 GB (2 x 2 GB) DDR2-667
Western Digital Scorpio Blue (320 GB 5400 RPM SATA)
Western Digital Scorpio Blue (400 GB 5400 RPM SATA)
    Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit
It's a laptop, and I'm taking HDV footage from a Canon HV20.  It's not terrible at performance... but it's not as snappy as I'd like to see.  Hence why I'd prefer to do editing with standard definition clips instead of the HD clips.

  • Premiere Pro CS4, Missing #1 Audio Channel

Running CS4, on Vista Ultimate 64.  P2 files
The 1st channel of audio is missing.  I checked the footage on a separate machine, and it's all good, but on my PC, the wave form on the 1st channel of audio is blank.  When I 1st put the audio into the timeline, I could see the wave form, but as soon as I hit play, it went blank.  I tried to "adjust audio gain" and it crashed the program.  I tried to make a new project, and re-import the audio in stereo, but it only gives me audio on the R side of the 1st channel.  The 2nd channel is fine.
    Weird stuff.  Any hints?
    Thanks!
    Eric B.

    The Panasonic P2 format
A  P2 card is a solid-state memory device that plugs into the PCMCIA slot of a Panasonic P2 video camera, such as the AG-HVX200. The digital video and audio data from the video camera is recorded onto the card in a structured, codec-independent format known as MXF (Media eXchange  Format). Specifically, Premiere Pro supports the Panasonic Op-Atom variant of MXF, with video in DV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO 50, DVCPRO HD, or AVC-I formats. A clip is in the P2 format if its audio  and video are contained in Panasonic Op-Atom MXF files. These files are located in a specific file structure.
The root of the P2 file structure is a CONTENTS folder. Each essence item (an item of video or audio) is contained in a separate MXF wrapper file. The video MXF files are in the VIDEO subfolder, and the audio MXF files are in the AUDIO subfolder. XML files in the CLIP subfolder contain the associations between essence files and the metadata associated with them.
Note: Premiere Pro  does not support proxies recorded by some Panasonic P2 camcorders in P2 card PROXY folders.
For your computer to read P2 cards, it needs the appropriate driver, which you can download from the Panasonic website. Panasonic also provides the P2 Viewer application, with which you can browse and play media stored on a P2 card.
Note: To use certain  features with P2 files, you first change the file properties from read only to read and write. For example, to change the timecode metadata of a clip using the Timecode dialog box, you first set the file properties to read and write. Use the operating system file explorer to change file properties.

I want to import files from my HD PVR onto my Premiere Pro to edit them. But, the suitable preset is unavailable, along with many other presets. I've looked online through ways to fix this, most have been ineffective. Does anyone know what to do?
    Thanks
