Premium alert scams supported by Verizon

After being charged for the last two years by premium alert scam artists I contacted Verizon and they took the last three months of them off my bill. I consider what these people do as fraud, but who at Verizon cares unless someone catches on. If you do business with Verizon look carefully at your bill every month or you may be in for a big surprise. If anyone else has had this problem please respond. I am thinking about a class action law suit against Verizon for aiding and abetting fraudulent activities.

You decided to wait until after 2 years to contact Verizon about a questionable RECURRING charge on your bill? Maybe you should have taken your own advice about reviewing your bill 2 years ago.
Yes, I had this problem. I received a premium texting charge on my bill. I called Verizon immediately after receiving the charge. They removed the charge from my bill and offered to block ALL premium texting from my lines if I would like to do so. I did so and have NOT received another since.
Yes, premium texting IS supported by Verizon as there are certainly valid uses of this service. Verizon ALSO supports BLOCKING the same premium texting if don't see the need for any of these texts. Verizon does NOT support premium texting scams and WILL remove these from your bill, HOWEVER Verizon has no way of knowing if you actually signed up for a premium text or not. It is YOUR responsibility to monitor YOUR bill and determine if YOU are being charged correctly.

Have an iPad mini with latest software upgrade 8.1.2. Verizon Messaging app crashes on use after one year with no problems. I deleted the app and downloaded a clean version. It crashes whether or not I have any apps running in the background. Sometimes I can type part of a message before it crashes. Other times it crashes as soon as I try to use the app at all. Neither Apple Support nor Verizon store staff could find any reason for the problems. Any ideas??

Steady_RI, thanks for keeping us posted. Did you uninstall that application by pressing/holding down the icon until the (X) appears? Tap the (X) to delete it. Once the application has been deleted, you will need to reset the network settings on your device in Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. Power that device off/on and then download the application again. Additionally, we also recommend that you disable Wi-Fi and connect to our network to test the messaging feature again.

  • BEWARE: I was scammed and a Verizon tech support person was involved

Yesterday I tried to trace a package that Verizon shipped to me but when I went on the UPS web site and put in the tracking # I had I was told by UPS that they had no record of the #. I then called Verizon tech support. The person I was eventually connected to looked into the problem and told me that my computer had been compromised and had been hacked. He then directly connected me to a comapny (Mandatech) that he said was a Microsoft associate companyh and that they would take care of the problem for me. Mandatech took over my computer and, according to them, cleaned out all of the garbage and took care of the hacking problem. This service cost me $350 plus I bought a 1 year service contract to make sure I was never hacked again, this cost $300. At the end of the session Mandatech contacted Verizon and I was given the delivery information for my package. Today when I tried calling the support phone number for Mandatech I got a recording that said that the line was not in service. At this point I realized that I had been scammed. I contacted Verizon's frlaud department and was told that they would look into it but had no way of determining who the Verizon tech person was that connected me to Mandatechl and that Verizon had no responsibility to what happened to me. I also reported this incident to Microsoft and they are checking it out.
I find it incomprehensible that although it is obvious that the Verizon tech person was directly a part of the scam Verizon couldn't find out who the person was and took no responsibility for this action.

Welcome to the forums.  You're talking to Verizon's customers here.  If you want to talk to Verizon, click here: Contact Us.
Unfortunately, it looks like you fell into one of the many methods scammers use to steal money. Scammers have figured out how they can get bogus phone numbers to turn up in search results.  When you use those numbers, you end up calling the scamers instead of the company you really want.  I'm guessing that you used a search engine to look up Verizon's support phone number.  If you didn't call 1-800-VERIZON this is most likely what happened.
Verizon will never, ever ask you to pay money to fix a computer virus problem.  They simply do not do that.
If you google "telephone tech support scams" you can learn a lot about how the scammes operate.
If I were you, I would immediately cancel the credit card used to pay the scammers and report it to your bank.
You should also find a local computer expert to help you remove any software the scammers installed on your computer.  A complete system wipe may be the best course of action.
    Good Luck.

  • G'ZONE COMMANDO ADVERTISING A SCAM! NO VERIZON SUPPORT ON DESIGN FLAW

    Moved for greater exposure

Make sure you dont have it loaded down with apps that are sucking operating ram. And any apps you download make sure to move to your memory card so they arent wasting onboard resources. I can only have a handful of downloaded apps at one time. ALSO, uninstall any 'updates' to any bloatware apps you dont use. You can't transfer those to your sd card like regular downloaded apps and each update sucks more onboard ram. Also remember to disable automatic updating on the Play Store for any apps you dont use. Thirdly, the ONLY antivirus or system tool app I use on my commando is AVAST. Every other one i have tried drags the system down way too much. The name of the game with the commando is MEMORY SPACE. The phone is an awesome handset, and even with its problems I wouldnt ultimately give it up very easily. I mean, what other smart phone on the market lets you take pictures under water?

  • Premium messaging scams

My current bill has 2 charges on my wife's number for premium messaging services "Pure Luv Alerts"  and "Cellfunz". She swears she never subscribed to them. A quick internet search shows numerous scam reports from others who had the same thing happen. How can these companies get away with this? Can Verizon do anything to prevent it? Do these services have some official business relationship with Verizon? If so you should sever it with the companies that are doing this.
PS I've now blocked premium messaging services on both our lines.

There are ways to subscribe to premium SMS services without fully realizing that you have done so. Probably the easiest is through Facebook. By giving Facebook your mobile # and playing some of the endless games available via Facebook COULD subscribe you to a premium SMS service. I am sure that this is listed in the ToS that you have to agree to when you first play one of these games. How many people just click "I Agree" instead of actually reading these agreements? Anytime you give out your mobile # on a website, you are also setting yourself up for the possibility that the website will sign you up for premium SMS. Do you read the privacy policy of any/all websites you visit or give your cell # to?
Does Verizon do anything to prevent this? Yes, and you have taken the precaution that Verizon offers to prevent exactly this from happening. I have done this to ALL of the lines on my account.

  • Is Skype Premium a scam?

    Hi,
I have Skype Premium now for 4 days or so. And the reason i bought it is to get rid of the ads. But i still see them, in my home screen and during calls. heres a screenshot: puu.sh/1sEsU
It is very annoying as i bought a service to get rid of them. But in the end they are still there... I hate commercials very much, and i refuse to use programs that force me into them. However i liked skype before Windows toke over and needed a phone number, so i thought lets just buy the **bleep** Premium, its still cheaper than a normal phone here...
Eitherway how do we fix this.. i won't pay for commercials.
I am very unsatisfied, also i don't see the promised live support in my contact list.
As we speak i am looking for a other program that can do almost the same as Skype.
Getting tired of fixing stuff, its always the same with Microsoft.
I want my ads to be gone within 24hours or i refund myself, that are the benefits of paypal. And i will report Skype Premium as a big scam, with all PROOF in it. I'm really pissed of now, due this. Payed for nothing. I didn't need skype premium for the 3 or more video calling. Who the hell ever uses that, anyways i wanted it to be adFREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! No **bleep**ing ADSSSS. NONE.
Microsoft, you **bleep**ed up Internet Explorer 8,9 & 10, MSN will be gone in Q1 2013, Windows 8 is one big ass disaster for DESKTOPS with MULTIPLE screens, Windows Phone is a big disaster. Skype is becomming **bleep**tyer everyday.
Did you guy hire **bleep**ing monkeys or what?
Jesus christ. Sorry for my language i don't like paying money for NOTHING.

I'd say yes it is. my ads are gone but now i have a bunch of Skype advertisements- I dont want ANY pop ups, not even skype ones, why --- would i want to be harrassed to buy premium and check features im either dont want, or already know of? Ontop of owning premium already!
Oh and the multiway sharing dont work ---. I am trying to share dark souls with my 2 friends and every 6mins the flipping thing says "Group video is unavailable at the moment. Please try again a little later." Why --- should I? Its premium service! Now where --- is the service?

  • Phishing Scams - Detection by Verizon Email Servers

Verizon posts under Support / Announcements a number of notices about phishing scams that appear to be emails from Verizon.  Why can't the email servers detect these bogus emails and either block them at the server from making it to the user's accounts, or appending "POTENTIAL SCAM" to the email subject header.

I am sure that the actual original example shown are blocked, but the spammers keep find ways of disguising them so new version keep coming through.  Usually includes some pointers to servers they keep changing.

  • Stunned at lack of Support from Verizon

A little over a year ago, I left Sprint for Verizon because everyone told me how much better it was. So far, the phone service has not been any better at all; certainly not worth the extra money I pay Verizon.
Today, Verizon attempted to deliver the OTA update to my phone. Because I was busy when it first came up, I declined. I used my phone for a few hours, threw it in my briefcase, and went to work. At work, I pulled it out of my briefcase, and it was totally bricked. I can guess what happened: they started the OTA update again; I got on the subway and lost reception in the middle of it; and now it won't boot -- it is just stuck on the recovery screen, where no buttons work (as has been described on other threads).
At the VZW store, they too were unable to fix it, and said they would have to sell me a new phone. Sell, not give. See, the phone is out of the one year warranty. And so even though the hardware is perfectly fine, and even though it was VZW's botched software update that bricked the phone, they don't think that they are responsible; they think I should have paid for insurance instead. Seriously? In addition to the extra money VZW charges over their competitors, now I have to carry insurance against the possibilty that they will do something to damage the phone?
The amusing part of the whole situation was when the VZW tech tried to tell me that it was my fault for not accepting the OTA update in the first place; apparently, he believes, although they screen offers you a chance to postpone the update, it is your fault if you do that and your phone bricks 4 hours later.
The silver lining in this is that I own two Fascinate phones, one of which (the one that still works....) I have rooted and installed a custom ROM on, and so I expect that I will be able to get the other phone running again rather than buying a replacement. But clearly that's not an option for the vast majority of VZW customers; I can't believe that they are all {word filter avoidance} if their phone is more than a year old.

    Tidbits wrote:
So you didn't brick your device, and you just want to rant?  Which is it as I am confused and trying to figure out what you want.
What I want is for Verizon to behave like a responsible company and take responsibility for their software updates, and when their software updates render a phone unusable, to remedy the situation.
I understand that you disagree -- that you feel it is perfectly acceptable for them either to require that I carry insurance to protect against their actions, or that I possess a level of techinical expertise that is greater than their own technical support department, who couldn't get the phone working. The fact that I can get my phone working doesn't really help the majority of people who will experience this problem and what I would like is for Verizon to change their policies so that these people are taken care of.
So I'm sorry if my criticism came off merely as a rant; given the time I had to waste to get the phone working again (not to mention the time without a phone), I will admit to being angry and letting that color my posting. So let me rephrase: Dear Verizon representatives who read this board, Please change this completely unfair policy whereby I am responsible for paying for or fixing problems on the phone that you sold me after you, doubtless with all good intentions, sent a buggy software update that caused the phone to be inoperable, even when services by your own technical representatives.

  • Icon user here chiming in on lack of support from Verizon

As everyone else, I've been waiting patiently for Verizon to release the 8.1/Cyan update for the Lumia Icon since JULY. I've shared the same frustrations that have been expressed on this forum countless times over the past months, but never felt the need to chime in until now.
I've been a Verizon customer for around 5 years, starting with a Windows Mobile Omnia 2 and later going through an HTC Trophy, a Lumia 928 and now the Icon (since March). In all cases save for the 928, Verizon's support has been anywhere from non-existent to downright ignorant (Omnia 2 suffered from countless issues network connectivity-wise, which Verizon never managed to solve, Trophy never received the WP 7.8 update, and the Icon not only has been waiting for the 8.1/Cyan update for several months, but also got discontinued in about half a year after release. 928 at least received the Amber update in a timely fashion, but of course has also suffered from the same lack of support that the Icon owners have gone through.) To add insult to injury, Verizon has also offered far fewer options for Windows Phones over  the years than other carriers have.
Despite all of these issues over the years, I always justified staying with Verizon due to my perception that their coverage was unparalleled. As I'm in the military and thus move around a lot, this was very important to me. So much so that I even chose to upgrade to the Icon instead of switching to AT&T despite currently being stationed in WV where Verizon doesn't even operate it's own network, causing me to have serious connectivity issues all over the place. I figured I'm only gonna be in the area for so long, and when I leave for some other assignment, I'd be glad I stayed with the superior network.
Well, times have changed. First of all, when I first signed up for Verizon, AT&T's network (at least in the areas where I worked at the time) had a very poor reputation. Now, five years later, I've been hearing nothing but good things about them. Supposedly Verizon's network is on average a bit faster, but coverage and reliability-wise they seem to be very close. As long as I can get a decent signal wherever I go, I really don't care if my speeds are a little bit slower. I'll use my computer and ISP for anything that requires high speeds.
I was still willing to give Verizon a pass on the delays with Cyan as long as they released it by the end of the year, but my eyes were opened by two events, one of which just happened today. First, was the very abrupt discontinuation of the Icon, THE flagship Windows Phone device. Then today I walked into the Verizon corporate store in Petaluma, CA (currently training in the nearby area) asking if they had any information about the timeline for the Cyan update. The guy at first seemed friendly and went into the back to talk to someone with more knowledge on the matter. He then came back and told me the most far-fetched line yet. He said Microsoft was discontinuing the Lumia phones and going forward was only going to provide updates to the HTC and Samsung models. Whatever the case, Verizon was not responsible for the updates. I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of this nonsense, and told him No, Microsoft bought Nokia, and the Lumia devices were simply being rebranded as Microsoft. In no way shape or form are they being discontinued. Well, he must have been insulted by getting corrected, because he then said to me and I quote: "I don't know, why don't you just go read about it on the internet then.", and began to walk away.
I have come to realize I've been putting up with Verizon's ignorance and lack of support of the Windows Phone platform for half a decade because of an illusion of supposedly better service! After all this time they haven't changed their ways and show now signs of changing. Sticking with Verizon is only going to result in more headaches, delays and disappointments. After my encounter with the representative in the previous paragraph, I stopped him and asked to talk to the manager, because I wanted to make sure I was getting the most authoritative answer I could get to my next question. I wanted to confirm that as a Verizon Edge customer, if I paid off my device in full, I could leave their network for another provider at any time (somehow I overlooked this fact when I signed up in March. I chose Edge simply to give me more flexibility with upgrading my phone), and she confirmed this was the case.
So to conclude, I have decided to wait until the end of the year. If by then Verizon has not at the very least provided a firm date for my Lumia Icon to receive the Denim (yes, Denim. After all this time, only updating to Cyan is not going to redeem them in my eyes) update, I will pay off my Icon, and switch to AT&T. Quite frankly, even then I think there is a high chance I will end up switching after my phone has been paid off in the normal timeline, because I feel there is no basis for me to trust Verizon with behaving any better in the future, but if they want to have any hope of me staying on as a customer, I better have a firm date for the Denim update by 2359 on 31DEC2014. I can understand delays, but I will not stand for Verizon's lack of communication to their customers. In the end I will vote with my wallet.

  • I got scammed, too. Verizon lies.

I also feel scammed by Verizon. My husband I sent our perfect IPhone 4s phones back to Verizon . Although we have yet to hear back about my husbands phone, mine was appraised at $76. The reason? The Sim tray was missing! The instructions were to take out the Sim card, but never said to put the tray back . It doesn't matter, after reading all the posts on this web site it doesn't matter, people are not getting the money that was promised. One person on this board got results from the Better Business Bureau, so I am going to try that. Still, with all these complaints you would hope Verizon would try and make it right. The obviously don't give a ****.

That is one expensive little piece of plastic.
However, I don't buy your "I didn't know you were supposed to put the SIM tray back" line. That would be like not putting the battery cover back on if you were told to remove the battery (as you can on many phones, just not iPhones) and send it back. It is a piece of the phone and the phone has an obvious hole in it without the cover.
Sorry you are not in the category of everyone else. You did nto send the phone back intact, and you paid the price. This is not a Verizon lie, just an expensive life lesson.

  • 4GLTE HomeFusion Service Disappears after 2 months and no support from Verizon

I am hoping this may gain some attention, or anyone else can share if this has happened to them
On July 5th, after 2 SOLID months of very good speeds and HomeFusion service with 3+ bars on the router, the service disappeared.
YES: The 4G Signal is GONE, only Verizon 3G. I am in the "4G Extended Area" (HomeFusion does not roll back to 3G)
Also notable, I have a Verizon 4G LTE Ipad and it too used to work on 4G and now only 3G
Now, I have been calling Verizon daily since July 5th, and get no answer, is this service GONE? Is it Broken, When will they fix it , will they fix it.
It has gone from "We will have our network people looking at the tower to, well, it's 4G extended service area and it could just go away, sorry"
Am I crazy, or is this a very poor way to service customers and run a business? If I had a service that they installed and approved on their network, shouldn't they maintain the service, or give notice that the service is going away?  They are still billing me in advance for next month, 7 days of which I have been ale to use 0 GB of bandwidth.
I call tech support, ask to esculate, they tell me it is esculated, there is no one else to talk to. There is no answer or hope of knowing if the service is coming back or if/when they will do anything and decide to do anything except take my money. Oh, I expect a hassle when I tell them I am not paying for something I don't have.
So question: What should I do next, any suggestions on escalation? Seems Verizon could care less about it's 4G LTE network and customers that they put up on a service, they just don't seem to care.
    Thanks!
    Dave W

Lol that sux. Some people are so filthy rich or don't know any better and they just pay the bill

  • Skype Premium and customer support is a bad joke!

Just so everyone is aware, Skype Premium is a complete waste of your money! The company indicates that unlimited calling to a country of your choice comes with the subscription - but that's not entirely accurate. I had a premium subscription and chose unlimited calling to the US. Turns out, I was being charged a mysterious 'connection fee' to dial certain numbers that was eating away at my Skype credit. I was in touch with support on the matter and was given the run-around for about an hour. It was determined through that support ticket that when I purchased Premium, I had a remaining subscription for Unlimited US & Canada calling which is why I had not seen this 'connection fee' charge in the past until it expired. As you might imagine, we went round and round regarding the supposed unlimited calling included with premium but at the end of the day, it wasn't entirely true. There was also some confusion about the 'connection fee' which was reported to me as a "once per call" charge when in all actuality it was being billed on a per usage basis. Long story short, if you want unlimited calling, my suggestion is to purchase that plan and avoid the overpriced premium subscription that gives you virtually nothing for the money. The only feature that was even remotely worth a hoot was the screen sharing capability - but even that can be done with other tools free of charge while you place a skype to skype call.

Here is a brief excerpt from my "I paid for Skype Premium... why are you charging me to make calls?" chat today:
You: Okay, thanks, I guess I got it. The Skype Premium I paid for entitles me to free group video calls until February, then, becuase they're free for everyone, they'll be free.
    Keynethe C: You are correct!

  • Alert Settings - Treo 700wx Verizon

Though I have a check box to make an alert repeat it is grayed out.  Most any phone I have ever had or used could be set up to beep at a set interval when there is a voicemail waiting.  So far I have been unable to make this one do that.
Post relates to: Treo 700wx (Verizon)

This is the same for all windows mobile devices. You will need a 3rd party program to do what you are asking. Such as Treo Alert, Phone Alarm. Those are the ones I know of. There could be others that are better.

  • I support the Verizon CWA union 100%

If you support the 45,000 union Communication Workers of America instead of the corporate leadership please add your voice to this post.
Last year Verizon made over 10 billion in profits and now they have a list of 100 demands to the Union in order to make them give more while the greedy Verizon corporate leadership take more for themselves and give up nothing.
I am a customer and have no connection with any union, but I am sick and tired of filthy rich corporate heads forcing workers of this country to make all the sacrifices while they become even more corrupt.
Thanks and Please add yourself to this list.

If you had done any homework at all before your intial burst of posts on this subject, you'd realize that the issue of unions and workforce compensation are FAR TOO COMPLICATED to be boiled down into a simple "ZOMG, unions are great for everyone!"
No, unions are not great for everyone, if they were, there would be no controversy.  They aren't even great for all workers.  It's a little more involved than that.
A good portion of the problem in this country is that people want (dare I say need) to boil down incredibly complex issues into some type of 10 word sound bite that captures their absolute support or hatred for one side or the other.  That isn't how the world works, and when the people in charge start behaving the same way, we get our current situation.
Your statement that " It is a fact since 1970 that wages have gone down for non-union workers since unions and union memberships have gone down as well." is an excellent example.  What you are proving there (if we assume that we agree with the sources you used to reach these facts), is correlation, not causation.  I know there's a lot more going on in terms of middle class wages than just union membership.
I don't disagree that we, as a nation, have a problem.  I just don't believe it can be solved by some kind of one-fits-all bandaid of boycotting any company that has some type of business relationship with another company that has been "mean" to a union.  (which, by the way, is probably most mid- to large size corporations in the world)
Verizon Wireless, the workers whose salary I pay with my wireless subscription fees, are not unionized, and I don't think they ever have been.  I also think they're pretty fairly compensated for the work they do, and that if they feel like they aren't, there are quite a few other companies they could go work for.  I also like my wireless service.
