Printing Guidance

Hi all
I'm a fairly new transfer into the world of vector graphics and have been given a print assignment with the following instructions. Any clarification on this would be very helpful, in terms of sizing my artboard down and what would be acceptable. My logo has no text as it is all an object so I assume I can ignore the outline creation? Should I also worry about the 3cm gap in the middle or is that taken care of during the output process anyway?
Thanks =)
"The size of the adverts on the scrolling signage measure 1m x 5,9m  (landscape) with a  3cm gap in the middle.
Artwork should be set to scale. Preferred format for artwork is .pdf  (please ensure outlines are created before saving)
A jpeg or pdf (low res) is also required as a visual proof.
on a scale of 1:10 to reduce file-size. "

BF,
First of all, you may work at 1:10, 100 mm x 590 mm, and Save As PDF when the time comes (PDF can scale everything up), and that will be the size of the proof, too.
You may ask the following questions to those giving the assignment (or their printer), with comments:
1) Does the Outlining apply to Type, in other words Live Type should be converted, other artwork unchanged? It can hardly mean anything else.
2) Is the gap in the middle for overlapping? They might be printing on two sheets, 1000x2965 mm (with the 30 mm gap) and 1000x2935 mm (overlapping 30 mm, over the gap).
Confirmation of 2) would mean that you should split the artwork in the middle and move the parts 30 mm apart, the resulting width being within the 5900 mm. Depending on the artwork this can be done in different ways.

  • Best practice for dividing IPhoto library

My wife and I have been using IPhoto since 2004, and are faced with the prospect of dividing the 40,000 photo library into smaller libraries. A Genius Bar session was only partially helpful. Last year we moved IPhoto off the IMac hard drive to an external harddrive. The Genius Bar employee created four new library folders on the external drive. We are thinking we need to get the IPhoto original library back on the IMac, so that it is accessible to ICloud. We are looking for a source of print guidance that can help us navigate these kinds of questions. We are also looking locally (in Tucson) for a coach who can help us get the logistics of library development started.

Why do you thing you need to divide the library into smaller ones?  The  latest version of iPhoto can handle libraries with up to 1 M photos.  There's no need to move the library back to the boot drive to have it accessable to iCloud.  iCloud works with the library that's active.
What do you mean by library development?  You have a working library on an EHD so that's all you need. This Apple document gives the system requirements for iCloud: iCloud: System requirements

  • I need guidance putting an invoice together and printing it out...

My next big task is pulling informaton from my DB, organizing it into an invoice template and then printing it out.
I know the DB stuff but what do I need to use in order to organize that information into a pre-designed invoice and then printing it out with a single press of a button?

    nise_k,
My program handles customer accounts and all of the transactions that I do with them. I need to get my program to print out invoices with certain information taken from the DB and organize it into an easy to read and professional looking invoice.
I have allready figured out how to use the Print Class so I'm pretty sure I have the information I need to create these invoices.
The "Single press of a button" comment was referring to just pressing a "Print Invoices" button located somewhere in my program that would print all of the invoices instead of going to a customer account, clicking "Print Invoice", preview the invoice, and then print it before going on to the next customer.
I think the only way you could help me at this point would be if you know about a class that will take a .txt or .doc file, replace words like %CUSTOMERID% with the correct information from the DB and then printing that document without changing the layout of the invoice.

  • Need guidance printing 4 photos - 1 page

    Hi All,
I am asking this on behalf of my wife, using iPhoto 6 on her 17" iMac. I have never attempted this, but then I have iPhoto 5 on my Mac.
How do I print 4 photos on one 8X10?? I have brought four photos together in the iPhoto window, but I can't get Print to do more than one on the page. From reading other posts here, I found out about the Print Dialogue and the need to change a drop down, but I'll be damned if I can find that. Any body care to help with this? Thank you.

    Hello, Forest,
I have a Canon iP6700 printer. This is how I do it:
In Page Setup, select the paper size as A4.
Then, in iPhoto, choose the four photos and hit 'print.'
    The 'Print' options are:
    Printer
    Presets
    Paper
    Style
So, I select my Printer, my Preset is 'photo on photo paper',
Paper I choose again A4 and
    Style, I use N-Up.
Then, below those choices, a dropdown appears to select how many photos per page.
I set it to 4, and I can see in the small preview on the left, that all four photos will be on the one page.
See if you can set yours up something like mine.....it works!

  • Would like guidance on printing dvd labels using LaCie LightScribe Disc Lab

    Hello:
I would really like to create some Christmas CD's for friends & family and my research indicates that there is a product called LaCie LightScribe Disc Label software that allows my MacBook's dvd burner the capabiity to burn a professional looking label on each disc--can anyone educate me on this process along with recommendations on whether this is the way to go---I am really stumped and don't want to glue on labels or use a black felt pen for these gifts.
    Thanks,
    Connie

Lightscribe drives are available from a number of vendors and will fit into any compatible external case. Putting one into the internal case of anything other than a Mac Pro is not for the faint of heart. Besides the LaCie software, DiscLabel from Smile Software will burn labels, and there is a basic labeler from http://lightscribe.org/, where you can find out more information about the process. It is fairly slow, taking several minutes to make a complicated label. It is fine for friends and family, but it will be too slow for a big run of disks, particularly since you have to insert the discs upside down into the drive one by one, waiting for it to complete one before you can label the next.

  • How to add a new printer and laptop to my home network

Greetings, Need tech help. I have 2 issues going on.
First I am trying to add a 2nd Printer to my home network. I was given an HP 4050N printer. I want to add it to my home network. My main printer is an HP Photosmart 8450. It is attached to my desktop thro a Belkin USB 4 port switch and then to my Desktop PC via a USB port.  THe HP 4050N has both parrallel and serial connectors...no USB ports.  WHat is the recommended method to hook up. I also have an actiontec wireless router.  Initially I had 2 separate desktop units talking to my main printer, but noe the second desktop has it's own printer.
Second, I recently acquired an HP Elite Book 2540P laptop. I got it to power make my SOlidworks and Autocad software portable.  I would like to add this to my home network but dont know if wireless of serial hookup is the best way to go.
I hope this makes sense.  I am open to reconfiguring everything if it makes sense.  My internet and TV are driven through the Action-tec router.
    I would appreciate some guidance.

  • Printing with HP B9180 and Photoshop Elements 8 and Color Management

I've got a bit of confusion about certain settings in the printing process and I've posted a rather long discussion of my 'issues' and confusion.  I hope someone can give me some guidance here.  I've seen a lot of these issues addressed in many places but I can't seem to find an integrated response.  Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read and respond.
    Color Management Questions
My problems started when I was getting pictures that were too dark from my HP 9180 printer after having gotten very nice prints for a long time.  I had obviously started to do something differently inadvertently.  The only thing I think that is different is that I got a new 23 inch monitor, which does produce much brighter on-screen images.  So, I started to do some research and know just enough about color management to be slightly confused and have some questions that I hope someone can give me some help with.
    Equipment Background
I use both a Canon 20D and a Canon PowerShot SD600 camera. Both have the default color space as sRGB, although the 20D can be also set as RGB.
I also use Photoshop Elements 8, where there are a variety of settings possible for printing.
My monitor is an HP S2331, whose color space is sRGB and cannot be reset to RGB (I think) except for temperature; the default is 6500K.
My printer is an HP Photosmart Pro B9180 Printer, where there are also a variety of settings possible.
    I’m running XP-Pro.
    Here’s Where I Get Confused
Everything I have read about color management (various web sites, forums, books, etc) says to have the image, monitor, and printer all in the same color space.
Everything I read about PSE 8 (same sources) says to set PSE 8 to ‘Always Optimize for Printing’ under Edit>Color Settings in order to get the best prints.  This displays photos based on the Adobe RGB color space.
I am taking pictures in sRGB, and telling PSE 8 to process them in RGB by selecting ‘Always Optimize for Printing’.  Is this something I should be concerned about?  Should I reset my camera for RGB?
Further, by selecting ‘Always Optimize for Printing’, I am setting PSE 8 for RGB while my monitor displays sRGB.  Is this an important issue or is it also much ado about technicalities that an amateur should not worry about?  It does violate the ‘keep them in the same color space’ rule.
Next, when I go to File>Print and get the Print window and then do the Page Setup and Select Printer, I then go to More Options in the lower left of the window.  Under the More Options window, I select Color management and select Photoshop Elements Manages Colors.  Next, there is Image Space, which is fixed and not subject to selection from a drop down menu.
I understand that this is the image space of the image I took with my camera and that information is embedded in the image.  Correct?
Next, there is Printer Profile.  But, from what I have read, this is where the IEC profile of the paper being printed on is supposed to be selected, isn’t it?
Shouldn’t this more appropriately be called Paper Profile, or Printing Media Profile?  Further, this drop down menu appears to be somewhat erratic, sometimes showing all of the paper profiles I believe are loaded, sometimes not. It also shows listings such as Working RGB-Adobe RGB (1988), Adobe RGB 1988, Dot Gain 10%, 15%.... along with a lot of paper profiles.  Aren’t those profiles unnecessary here?
I’ve used both Relative Colorimetric and Perceptual Rendering and am happy with either one.
Next, when I go to Printer Preferences, in order to “…disable color management in the printer preferences dialog”, under the Color Tab, I select Application Managed Colors from the Color management drop down menu, and also have the option of selecting ColorSmart/sRGB and Adobe RGB (1988).
Is there any time when I should use either ColorSmart/sRGB or Adobe RGB  (1988)?  If I were staying with my camera’s sRGB setting, given the fact that the monitor is sRGB, would the appropriate selections be ‘Printer Manages Colors’ and ‘ColorSmart/sRGB’?
Finally, under the Features Tab, I go to look for the same paper I selected under Printer Profile (Question 4 above).  If it is one of the pre-loaded (by HP) profiles, it is there, but if it is a profile I downloaded, say for an Ilford paper, it isn’t listed, and I need to guess at an equivalent type of paper to select.
Is there any way to get that listing to appear under the Paper Type drop down menu?
I know that this is a long post, but it helped me to clarify my ‘issues’.  Thank you for any and all suggestions, answers, guidance and help.

    RIK,
Some printers have long names, esp. HP printers, and PSE gets ":confused." In control panel>devices and printers, right click on the default printer, go to printer properties, and rename the default printer to something short, e.g. "Our Printer." That may fix it..

  • Can't find printer in print browser

Somehow my printer disappeared from the print browser. I have a ibook G4 laptop running OSX 4.11, that is connected to my desktop via a router. Last night I could not print from it (the desktop printing is working just fine). I tried the printer setup utility and no printers are listed nor are any printers found. I downloaded a print driver but can't find it when I do a search using the print browser and am not sure where to look to find it .
I also tried to add the IP manually (am sure this wasn't the original setup) and using localhost:631 (on the desktop) > manage printers, but the device URI shows up as file://dev/null.
My desktop is a powermac G4 running 10.5.7, the printer is an HP deskjet 5650. All worked great until last night.
I've tried everything I can think of and would appreciate any guidance.
    Thanks,
    HB

Hmmm, something is wrong I suspect.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • USB Printer Connection via AX ethernet

    Am considering the following:
*Using the AE ethernet port to create a network.
**Through an ethernet hub or switch, connecting two AX in different locations within my office.
*Connecting a Canon iP8500 and i960 to the AX units via the USB connections.
My problem, like many others, is that the Canon printer utility (ink levels, out of paper notification, maintenance, etc.) does not work through the AX when connected wirelessly. Am about to try the ethernet to USB route but can find no discussion or guidance.
If I connect my Canon printer to a AX USB will I be able to use the full Canon printer utility through an ethernet connection to my AE base station?
Hope this is clear enough. !!

If I connect my Canon printer to a AX USB will I be
able to use the full Canon printer utility through an
ethernet connection to my AE base station?
    No.
The Canon utilities will only work if the printers are directly connected to a computer.

  • How do I get my Canon MX860 back online so I can print wirelessly on my Mac OSX 10.8.4?

I recently installed a new and bigger Time Capsule on my MacBook Pro system and since doing so, I lost the ability to print wirelessly on my Canon MX860 printer.  I am using Mountain Lion OSX 10-8-4.
I note Pahu discussion in another group on this same issue but it pertains to Snow Leopard.  I don't know how much difference it makes but when I followed his instructions, I did not get my problems resolved.  I am inserting here his discussion and in bold my comments where my results differed.
Pahu comments follow (min results in bold):  Some of the new models of Canon inkjet let you set the network settings using the touch panel on the printer. I am not sure if your MX860 has this setting, called Easy Setup under Device Settings > Network. If it does then you can change the network settings and create a new print queue on the Mac.
If it doesn't have the ability to change the settings via the keypad then you will have to connect the printer via USB to your Mac, which will create a USB connected print queue. If you then open Print & Fax, select this USB MX860 print queue and then press Options & Supplies, you will see the Utility tab. I DID NOT HAVE THAT TAB  I FOLLOWEED HIS LEAD USING THE FOILLOWING:  MAC HD/Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter/Utilities With this selected then click Open Printer Utility. This will open the Canon IJ Printer Utility and within this utility you will see the Network Settings button. Select this and you can then enter the new network settings, such as the SSID, type of security being used and the password for the network. Save the changes, turn off the power to the MX860 and then disconnect the USB cable.
Now turn the printer back on and open Print & Fax again. For the USB print queue you just created, you can delete this. I NEVER SAW ANY PRINT QUEUES AFTER TURNING THE PRINTER BACK ON.  ONLY THING I HAD WAS THE PRINTER LISTED IN THE WINDOW SHOWING IT WAS OFFLINE.  And for the old networked print queue, you need to delete this also. You may also need to delete the networked scanner queue if you had one. So with all the old queues to the MX860 removed you can then add the new network printer. I DID TWO THINGS, FIRST LEAVING THE PRINTER IN THE WINDOW, I TRIED ADDING USING + BUT NOTHING HAPPENED.  THEN I TRIED DELETING THE PRINTER IN THE WINDOW AND THEN TRIED HITTINH + BUT NOTHING EVER APPEARED.  HAD TO RECABLE THE PRINTER TO THE MACBOOK TO GET PRINTER BACK.  Click the + and wait for the MX860 to appear as a printer - it will appear first as a scanner and you can either add that now or after adding the printer. NONE OF THIS HAPPENED AND I LET IT SIT FOR SEVERAL MINUTES.  Several seconds after the scanner appears the printer should also appear, showing canonijnetwork in the Kind column. DID NOT HAPPEN.  Select this and the Print Using menu should automatically select the Canon MX860 series printer driver. When it does click Add to complete the network print queue creation and repeat the steps to add the network scanner if you need it.  OBVIOUSLY, NONE OF THIS HAPPENED EITHER.
NOW IT IS ME AGAIN.  Can someone please help me with this mess?  I am so frustrated with dealing with this for three days and the only way I can print is using the RSB cable which is not so cool strung across my bedfrom the computer to the printer.  Any guidance would be appreciated.  I am an old man of 73 and way over my head with this mess.  Don't know why Canon has to make this so difficult.  Thanks in advance, Ron Wikoff

I too am experiencing the same problem, my Canon MX860 printer is no longer connecting to my Airport Extreme Router. I tried following the directions on Canon's website http://www.usa.canon.com/CUSA/assets/app/pdf/wireless/router_network_change_mx34 0_mp495_mx860_mp980_mp620_mac.pdf
I have tried uninstalling all of the printer drivers, as suggested in another apple discussion, then running the Canon IJ network tool.
    I tried PAHU's response above:
Okay. No facility to add the MX860 to an Apple wireless network using the control panel so you will need to use the Canon IJ Network Tool.
So with the Mac connected to the MX860 via USB cable, open Canon IJ Network Tool (which should be located in Applications > Canon Utilities > IJ Network Tool). If you are looking in the other path you mention above, this could be an older version so download and install this latest version of the IJ Network Tool.
With the IJ Network Tool open, the first window talks about adding the printer to the network. Ensure the setting "Use the printer on the network" is set. Click OK
From the next window, the MX860 should be shown and as connected to the Mac via USB. Select it and click OK.
The next window will show the utility searching for wireless access points. A new window will then appear asking you to confirm the connection to the access point and the text will show which access point was found - which should show "Ronald Wikoff's Network". Click Yes to continue. When a window appears stating that the Canon IJ Network Tool wants to use your password, click Allow. (I cannot make it past this step. The Canon IJ Network Tool does not aoutmatically find my password. Instead I am taken to a screen where I type in my password and then attempt to connect.)
Now the window will take several seconds to setup the printer and should show a Setup Completion window. Click OK. (I never make it to this window. I receive an error message that that says the printer cannot communicate with the access point and to check the password. I checked the password then tried again. I even changed the password in the airport utility to make sure I had the correct password and it still did not work. I am starting to suspect that this may be related a recent Airport utility upgrade to 6.3.1 a few days ago.)
This will make the Add printer window appear. In the list, the "Canon MX860 series (00.00.85.xx.xx.xx)" should be visible. If it is, select it. The "Use" menu should then show "Canon MX860 series". If it does, click Add. This will add the network printer to the Mac.
If you now open Print & Scan, the "Canon MX860 series (00.00.85.xx.xx.xx)" should be in the printers list, as well as the Canon MX860 series. This latter one is for the USB connection. You could delete this printer and disconnect the USB cable.
The last step is to print a document to this network printer.
I plan on calling Canon tomorrow but if you have any other options for my to before then I am open to suggestions.

  • Problem: Selecting 2 individual pages from a 28page doc to print as a a spread...

I have been using InDesign today to print off a 28page booklet. I have my document setup per screen grab 1 attached. As I need to print one sheet at a time (in order to turn over to print next spread), I need to select pages in particular that I want to print.
When going to print, I setup my printer to use A3 paper size, printing landscape. I want to select p.28&1 to print off as my cover. This however does not print off as 1 spread (even though I have selected to print as spreads). How this appears, is to print off 2 pages, 1 sheet with Page 28 and a blank, the other sheet with page 1 and a blank - see screen grab 2 attached. I am unsure how to print these side by side?
The reason I am printing this way as opposed to selecting 'Print booklet' as I need to rotate sheets of paper, re-load to tray and individually print off spreads in order to make up this booklet. Can anyone assist or advise how to sort this? It prints all other pages as paginate spreads if I select it, just not the first and last pages which are currently single panels in the ID doc.
Some guidance would be highly appreciated.

There are a number of options...
Use Print Booklet to print to postscript file using the ADBPDF9.PPD printer description, then distill to PDF and print from Acrobat. See Creating PostScript Files in Snow Leopard for Older Print Workflows | InDesignSecrets
Export to PDF and use Actobat's booklet function,
Use a script like Dave Saunders' basic booklet script (http://pdsassoc.com/downloads/Buildbooklet.zip) to impose, then export spreads to PDF and print from Acrobat, or one of Sterling Computing's older scripts: Steve Sterling legacy ID imposition scripts
Use an imposition plugin like IDImposer: Overview | IDImposer

  • Print a block of data (such as a check) only once per section?  How?

I am creating a batch report for invoices where I summarize all invoiced transactions for the given period and then print a check. I am required to print no more than 20 invoice transaction records per page due to the check paper being printed on. This results in an unknown number of pages per client being invoiced during this batch process. Currently I have a check printing on each page -as a footer- but this is obviously not acceptable.
I would imagine there is some way of creating a global variable and then using an if statement that checks to see if the current section is equal to the global variable. If it doesn't, print the check, reassign the global variable to equal the current section and move on. This would limit the check print to once per section (client).
Any ideas on how I would do this? Any suggestions on other ways of doing it?
Thanks in advance for the guidance!

BReed - adjusted title for clarity...

    Chipili,
Here's a completely different method that you may want to consider. In all my Numbers documents that involve dates, I have (strategically located) a 2-Cell table that has a Header cell "Today" and just below it a cell with the formula: =TODAY(). It's handy on several levels. Format your today formula cell with the "1/5/2009" Date option - this format works best (and I don't know why). It doesn't matter how you have formatted the date you want to find, but what you will paste into the Find Window needs to be formatted this way.
Now, activate the FIND panel with a COMMAND-F and it will open at the bottom of your Numbers window.
Then to locate the current date you would select your special TODAY cell, COMMAND-C, click in the Find window, COMMAND-V. You will get at least one hit, the cell with the TODAY() expression. If the date appears anywhere else, you will get a line for this in your list of finds and clicking on it will take you there. Often I'm looking for a date a week or 10 days earlier than today's date. It's easy to create an expression for this: =TODAY()-7, for instance.
Hope this gives you something to think about.

  • Printing--Linewrap/Metadata/Font-size?

    Running Lightroom 1.2 on WindowsXP.
    Three questions about printing:
    1) Is is possible to wrap lines in the Identity Plate? Ideally, I would like to force a hard line break between Name and Location or Name and Date, such as:
    Yosemite National Park
    2005
and keep both lines centered within the Identity Plate field.
    2) Can Lightroom store print metadata (font size/color, scaling factor) for each print the way it stores Vibrance, virtual copies, tone curves, etc.?
Suppose Photo1 and Photo2 have widely different title lengths (6 letters and 20 letters, respectively). Then I print Photo1 then Photo2 then Photo1 again. Right now I have to re-scale the letters for Photo1 to make them look the same size they were before, even though I printed Photo1 already. That's a real time-waster. Is there a better method when you cannot know which photo will be required to print next?
    3) Can Lightroom set font size explicitly instead of using % scale factor? It would be a lot more convenient to set the font size at 10 or 12 or whatever so it could carry over to other titles if you want all your titles to print in a specific font size (e.g. 12 points)
    Thanks,
    Robert

Thanks. Sorry. I typically don't repeat questions.....
Any guidance on my other 2 questions above?
