Privacy Considerations - AppleCare Repair

My Mid-2010 MBP has been throwing kernel panics (do we still call them kernel panics?) like crazy lately, and I can think of to troubleshoot, with no joy.  So I have an appointment in about an hour with the Genius Bar, as this Mac is under AppleCare for a few more months.
On the assumption that I'll have to leave the MBP with them for some amount of time for diagnosis and/or repair, I'm wondering how best to protect the trove of personal and sensitive information on the hard drive.  What do people do in situations like this?  The only thing I've thought of is to create a new account for the Genius's purposes, but I don't know if they'd want to see what's happening in my account, where the kernel panics are happening.  On the other hand, if it's a hardware problem, I wouldn't think the account should matter.
I also want to stress that I don't want to cast aspersions on anybody in the store, or anyone else who may become involved in this, but I've got too much personal stuff at risk to take any chances.
Any help on this would be appreciated -- I have to leave in an hour to get to the appointment.

The only thing I've thought of is to create a new account for the Genius's purposes, but I don't know if they'd want to see what's happening in my account, where the kernel panics are happening.
Kernel panics have nothing to do with user data. They're caused either by a software conflict, a hardware fault, or a bug in the OS.
Ideally you would erase the internal drive before turning over your computer to anyone. If you want the "Geniuses" to test your configuration, then a reasonable compromise is to do as you suggest. Create a new account, then delete yours. When you get the machine back, boot into Recovery and restore from a Time Machine snapshot. Do not use the machine after getting it back without completely wiping it first.

  • Applecare Repair Turns Into a Broken Macbook Case

I'm from Texas, but this past Wednesday I made the trip up to New York City to check the sites. When I managed to get to the hotel, I got on my Macbook and checked out how to get to the nice ol' 5th Avenue store. All was well, we checked out the place, etc. I get back to the hotel and, to my amazement, my hard drive had completely died on me. The click was loud enough to hear across the room while the TV was blaring.
Luckily, I have an Applecare warranty, so I decided to bring it down to the store. Needless to say, they repaired everything. The new hard drive was installed and they replaced the chipped palm rests, but I now noticed that they apparently banged the bottom of the case on something. There is now a crack on the bottom of the case.
It is strictly cosmetic, it doesn't alter functionality at all. To be quite honest, I'm not all that worried about it. Though, what I am concerned about is the fact that the crack could continue to spread or, in the long wrong, cause another problem. I would just bring it back up to the store, but I leave tomorrow morning at 8AM to make my voyage back to Texas. To make matters worse, the nearest Apple store to my home is about 120 miles away.
Is there a way that I can contact Applecare and just make a note of the occurrence that way, if it does happen, they won't try and say it's my wrong doing. It doesn't seem like it was dropped, but it seems like it got a nice little whack against a table or something. The bottom of the case is also scratched beyond belief. I always set my Macbook on it's cloth case, so they weren't there before hand.
I'm simply happy it's functional, but it is more than frustrating that it comes back with additional problems.
Any input will be highly appreciated!

When you call AppleCare, have your paperwork from the 5th Ave store and give them the case number. Also, request a case number for your reporting this incident.
    Good Luck

  • Aperture became unregistered after AppleCare repair

I just got my MBP back from AppleCare a week or two ago, and am launching Aperture for the first time since. But now it's coming up as unregistered and asking for a serial number. The original box is around here somewhere, but I think it's packed away in a storage locker. Is there any way to recover that SN from a Time Machine backup?
    Thanks!
    Jeremy

What was done for the repair? There is a file /Library/Application Support/ProApps/Aperture System ID. This file has the serial number so if that file is missing you could restore from Time Machine. However it might show as invalid if the motherboard or hard drive was replaced (not sure about this). If that is the case then you would need to re-enter it.

  • AppleCare repair timeframes? 4 weeks?!

    Hi
I've now been without my 2009 iMac for almost 4 weeks.
I took it into the nearest Stormfront to have the harddrive and DVD drive replaced. They sent it off to the Apple workshops, who then only replaced the harddrive.
It then had to be sent back to the workshops to have the DVD drive replaced (on priority) and they ordered a drive only for that first drive to be 'dead on arrival' (their words)
It still isn' back. We're now approaching 4 weeks (on Saturday).
Does anyone know the score with AppleCare terms and conditions regarding reasonable repair times. 4 weeks seems completely unreasonabl when  you pay a premium price for the computer, and extra for AppleCare!
    Thanks
    Tom

You can read the AppleCare terms at http://www.apple.com/legal/applecare/appgeos.html ... and note that towards the end there may be location-specific terms. For example, in Connecticut, AppleCare is extended by the length of time the system is with Apple while being serviced.

  • Length of Applecare Repair

I sent my pb into Apple on the 6th of Sept. and they are waiting on a part. This pb has been in 2 other times and always back in a couple of days. What is a reasonable length of time to wait? I am a commercial photographer and I use it in my location shoots. Just wondering how long some of you have waited for repairs?

HI, Donald. Turnaround times vary, depending on the part that's needed. The two weeks you've waited is longer than most people report, but less than some have waited. It's frustrating, I know, and it may even be unreasonable, but if your repair is being done under warranty, what's the alternative?
If your repair is not under warranty, on the other hand, there's little or no good reason to pay Apple's high repair rates. There are highly reputable and experienced third-party repair shops that specialize in Powerbooks and are usually less expensive than Apple.

  • AppleCare Repair Time Experience?

I sent a 23" display in for repair due to a failed USB port. Apple has had the unit for 4 full days now and when I called to get status (the web site flipped from waiting for return to complete/pending shipment upon their receipt) they say its still in "diagnostics".
I've sent in PowerBooks and macBook Pros and they always had same day repair and return shipment. This one seems to be going nowhere.
Has anyone had a display repaired and how long did it take them? Thanks.

That really depends on what the status of your backup is, whether you can agree with them not to erase and information, or to try to recover information first, whether or not you are concerned that a replacement computer may come out and only be able to load a newer operating system, and how much faith you have in their refurbished parts that may be put in its place. Usually it is pretty good either way. Don't forget many logicboard repairs are due to people not knowing how to handle the ports and cableson their computer*:

Not that you are one, but it is something to be aware of.

  • IPod AppleCare Repair Service

Hi, I recently asked for a repair service on my iPod Touch. But when I got the box, I read the instructions and it said on #3. For boxes attached, pre-printed, multilayer (EZ) labels, remove and keep the top part of our records, as this is your receipt. Complete the enclosed UPS Shipping Waybill and attack on the bottom of your return package.
There is no UPS Shipping Waybill that is enclosed in the box. Do I need this waybill? Or can I just ship it without it.

the same thing has happened to me... i have the ez label on it but there was no "enclosed shipping waybill" i'm just going to go to UPS and ask about it there

  • Applecare repair timeframe?

I am going to be sending my ibook into apple to have the lcd screen replaced - does anyone have an idea of how long the process will take?

    Isn't 2 weeks the standard "repair/fix/build/set up/tear down/I'm joking" time frame?
Brian is right though Stacy - only Apple Repair will know the status of their queue and time for fixing that particular issue. Best to call!

  • HT3302 I just got a replacement 4 days ago, and I dropped in the water! I want to know if I'm covered by the policy of repairs product for a period 90 days? According with AppleCare Repair Agreement Terms and Conditions, Section 2. Repair or Replacement S

    So what's your question?
Is the phone actually working?  If it is then use it.  If it isn't then take it into an Apple service provider for assessment.  I guess if they ask you about it you can claim protection under the 5th amendment (assuming you are in the USA)  - that's between you and your conscience in this situation.  That's why the thing is full of liquid sensors, including ones you cannot see.

  • I recently had a repair...

    Hello everyone,
Today I got my iBook G4 back from an AppleCare repair and I had a problem. The system ran perfectly until I came across a problem. When I had my laptop repaired, the problems were:
    * No power
    * Disc stuck in drive
And I put a DVD in my combo drive and it wouldn't accept it and would eject. I opened DVD player and it said "A valid DVD drive could not be found". I have a combo drive though (CD+RW/DVD-R). Can anyone help me? I need my laptop for a project this month, so I have no time to return it to get repaired again. I think Apple didn't run diagnostics with the disk drive. Any ideas?
    Thank you.

If you just had a repair you need to contact them and tell them that there is a new problem which might have been caused by the repair.

  • Applecare replaced battery says "check battery"

    Hi
I took my Macbook Pro 2.4ghz Santa Rosa in for a Applecare repair 5 weeks ago because it would not boot from the battery and the audio port needed fixing.
The AASP repair shop diagnosed the battery was faulty on the spot and ordered the replacement 3 weeks later the computer was ready. They lost my power cable + brick and replaced it with a smaller used cable they had spare after arguing my case.
I finally got the cable and have checked the stats for the "new" battery and it says "check battery" here are the stats from System Profiler:
    Model Information:
    Serial Number: Sony-ASMB012-REMOVED-4eee
    Manufacturer: Sony
    Device name: ASMB012
    Pack Lot Code: 0001
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 0110
    Hardware Revision: 0500
    Cell Revision: 0303
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 2263
    Fully charged: Yes
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 2356
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 71
    Condition: Check Battery
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): -784
    Voltage (mV): 11991
To see if i can fix this i've run the battery down and charged it up again and i've updated all the software including the most recent firmwire.
I've read that Apple will replace the parts with reconditioned parts in the Applecare terms but will they also do the same with batteries ??
I don't really want to go back to the repair shop i wasn't impressed with the service. Does anyone think that Apple Store will replace the battery with a new one on the spot or calling the help desk could be persuaded to send me a replacement ?
    Thanks
    David

In addition to loosing your power supply and replacing it with a lesser model, the numbers looks like you were given a used AND defective battery. The health of that battery is only 42 percent if it's for a 1" MBP, and much less than that if it's a 17".
We don't know your geographic location. If you are in the US, I would call Apple Consumer Relations and calmly relate the story. That AASP's status should be reviewed.

  • How to Repair Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server 2013 once the update rollup or service pack is installed?

    Hello,
I am going through the following Technet article:
Repair Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server 2013 (
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh699749(v=crm.6).aspx )
The repair option asks for the original CRM DVD media location. The problem is that how the repair procedure knows about the service packs or update rollup files location?
My concern is that the repair procedure replaced the update DLLs (or other files installed by CRM service pack installer) by the RTM files in the original setup DVD.
Is there any special consideration for repairing Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server 2013 once the Service Pack or Update Rollup is installed?

does AppleCare repair or replace broken iPad 2 screens.  I dropped iPad.

No - it only covers manufacturing defects for an extra year, it doesn't cover accidental damage

  • If I purchase from the store can I always take it back for repair?

I was wondering if I purchase my MBP in-store will I always be able to return it to the store for repairs or replacements if I have any problems, or will I eventually have to send it to Applecare.

Yes, although it depends on the store exactly whether and what repairs they actually do in-store. Some repairs require the store to send it into the AppleCare repair facility.
